Music LITURGY & MUSIC Jaime’s Music Notes Notes About Music In The Church – Part 1. This week we will be entering into the season of Lent. Musically speaking, it is encouraged that our music becomes a bit more low key and that we sing texts that promote the examination of our conscious and the progress of our journey of reconciliation with God, as well as the wonderful compassion that God has for us. But this year we will also see some other aspects of music in the Church. Before I elaborate, I will give you a quote from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal which is a book issued by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops giving norms of how to celebrate Mass properly. #41. The main place should be given, all things being equal, to Gregorian chant, as being proper to the Roman Liturgy. Other kinds of sacred music, in particular polyphony (a style of musical composition employing two or more simultaneous but relatively independent melodic lines), are in no way excluded, provided that they correspond to the spirit of the liturgical action and that they foster the participation of the faithful. There is another liturgical document called Sing To The Lord which explores music for Catholic Worship in more depth. Here is article 75 from that document: Each worshipping community in the United States, including all age groups and all ethnic groups, should, at a minimum, learn the Kyrie XVI, Sanctus XVIII, and the Agnus Dei XVIII, all of which are typically included in congregational worship aids. More difficult chants, such as Gloria VIII and settings of the Credo and Pater Noster, might be learned after the easier chants have been mastered. At Holy Cross Church, we have already begun this process and have been signing the Kyrie during the Penitential Act and the Agnus Dei, which means Lamb of God. The next step for us will taking place during our Lent Season. We will begin to sing the Holy in Latin (which is Sanctus) and we will also begin singing some chants from the English propers of the Mass. The propers of the Mass are short passages from scripture which are to be sung usually in Gregorian chant form to accompany the liturgical actions of the Mass, mainly the Entrance, the offertory and the Communion action. At this time, we will begin by singing the Entrance chant during Mass. The text of this Entrance Antiphon can always be found in the readings section of our Breaking Bread Hymnal. During Lent will sing a refrain or two of a known song we already use (for example Gather Your People) and then sing the Entrance Antiphon (or Entrance Chant) while the procession takes place. In Part 2 of this letter, I will elaborate a bit about the new Welcome Sheets that you will be receiving during Lent. These will give you information about the songs we will sing during that particular Mass and where to find them in the book. One last thing: If you would like to practice the Sanctus (Holy) that we will be singing at Mass during Lent, you can go to www.youtube.com and write Sanctus XVIII. You should be able to see and hear the version that we will be singing. Have a blessed week Jaime 3 Reflexiones de Jaime “Don’t forget to check out our Ideas Acerca De La Música En La Iglesia – Primera Parte. Saint Vincent de Paul Holy Cross Conference, 480-985-4259 It’s fascinating to see how God often leads St. Vincent teams to homes in dire circumstances, apart from the need for food or monetary aid. In one case a woman who received food asked for prayers for her dying husband. In another home, the team found a woman who had fallen on the floor. She needed help just to get up. The Parish Council wants to thank our winter parishioners for the great turn out during our brunch on January 28th. Over 180 parishioners attended the brunch. Father Ramirez and Father Matthew gave heartwarming presentations on their lives as priests and the trivia contest afterwards was entertaining for all. Several parish committees helped make this event such a huge success. A special thanks to the parish Welcoming Committee, Martha’s Ministry and the Knights of Columbus for all their assistance in making this happen. End of Year Contribution Statements 2014 Holy Cross Contribution statements are available now upon request. The statements can be mailed or e-mailed to you. Requests can be made by contacting the parish office or by e-mail to [email protected]. Once a request is made, statements are processed within 3-5 business days. This convenient option allows you to safely contribute to the church automatically through your checking/savings account or by Credit Card. You may sign up for ACH at any time. The forms are available on-line at www.holycrossmesa.org Parish Stewardship of Treasure For the weekend of February 14th & 15th A Stewardship Moment: The fate of a leper is a great tragedy at any time and place. In Jesus’ time, lepers were considered condemned, part of the plagues God sent as punishment. They were cast out of society and abandoned. St. Mark’s Gospel reveals the unthinkable. Jesus reaches out and touches a leper. He risks catching the contagious disease and heals the man. As the Gospel story teaches, no one is abandoned in Christ. Are there those in our society or in our personal lives for whom we ascribe no hope, who we have abandoned, treated like lepers? Or as Christ’s stewards of our sisters and brothers, do we risk reaching out and touching those who may seem to us to be “unclean” or not worthy of our time or attention? Welcome to Holy Cross Cursillo Movement The Holy Spirit has blessed us here at Holy Cross in having a community of Cursillistas who are engaged in spreading God’s love to our parishioners and to the world. The Cursillo brings the benefits of your faith into the ordinary movement of our everyday lives. The Cursillo journey invites Catholics to dive deeper in our faith and connect with God’s unlimited love. It is usually a life changing event. It is more than just a weekend experience. It invites us to choose to live each day for the rest of our life as though we were on a pilgrimage. During the 3 days the focus will be on Jesus Christ as most of us have never been focused before. A new community of the Body of Christ is formed while enjoying food, music, worship, talks, lots of fun and laughs. When you leave on Sunday, you will not be the same person who arrived on Thursday evening. If you are 21 years of age, a Catholic and be able to receive the sacraments you are invited to make a Cursillo. For more information call Deacon Jim or Mimi Gersitz at 480-396-0173. They will be happy to answer your questions. Thomas J. Olmsted, Bishop of the Diocese of Phoenix, announced today the launch of a questionnaire for use at the October 2015 Ordinary Synod of Bishops on the theme, “The Vocation and Mission of the Family in the Church and Contemporary World.” All of the Catholic faithful are invited to respond to the questionnaire. The responses will help inform Pope Francis and the Bishops of the Synod about the challenges faced by today’s families and enable them to discuss and develop appropriate pastoral solutions. “I ask Catholics to prayerfully and purposefully consider each question in the questionnaire,” Bishop Olmsted said. “These important questions will assist me in offering a summary on the Synod’s theme of marriage and the family.” The questionnaire will be available online from Monday, Feb. 2 through Sunday, Feb. 22, in both English and Spanish. The link to the questionnaire is on the Diocesan website at diocesephoenix.org. The response from the Diocese of Phoenix will be shared with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and then incorporated into a document that will be forwarded on to the Vatican for use at the Synod. To help prepare for the October 2015 meeting, Pope Francis has asked Bishops around the world to consult with the faithful in developing a new set of questions aimed at getting a better understanding of the challenges faced today by families. It will explore three parts: 1) Listening: The Context and Challenges of the Family, 2) Looking at Christ: The Gospel of the Family and 3) Confronting the Situation: Pastoral Perspectives. In 2013, the Bishops of the world were asked to respond to a series of questions to help gather information to prepare for the Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops taking place in 2014. The responses to these questions were examined thoroughly in an effort to more deeply understand the new challenges of the family. The responses of the faithful to this new set of questions will inform the 2015 Ordinary Synod on the Family. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix was established Dec. 2, 1969, by Pope Paul VI. Led by the Most Rev. Thomas J. Olmsted, more than 1.1 million Catholics make this diverse, vibrant and faithfilled diocese their home. ....for the AZ East Valley Pro-Life Alliance’s Pro-life Inter-Faith Conference: When: Saturday, March 14, 2015 Time: 10:00 am ~ 4:00 pm Where: Windemere Hotel & Conference Center 5750 East Main Street, Mesa, AZ 85205 Please join us for a full day of professional speakers who will speak only on Pro-Life, Pro-Family, and Pro-Religious Freedom topics that will educate and inspire! 5:30 p.m. Procesión del Centro Pastoral Diocesano, 400 E.
