Dear Lake Travis ISD Parents and Guardians:
With the help of our Lake Travis Independent School District nurses, the School Health Advisory Council
(SHAC) has been reviewing the administrative guidelines for the manner in which the district will
address instances of head lice at a campus. As many of you may know, while not an illness or disease,
lice is spread very easily through head-to-head contact during play, sports, and when children share
things like brushes, combs, hats, helmets and headphones. Parents, community members, teachers and
nurses all play a crucial role in prevention and management.
To accomplish the goal of managing instances of lice at Elementary school, we can help by:
A. Notifying the parent and asking if they can pick their child up for treatment, or treat upon
arriving home
B. Providing information about head lice on Campus Nurse’s individual websites or at the following
link: http://www.cdc.gov/parasites/lice/head/
C. Instructing the parent that their child needs to be treated before returning to school and that
they may choose to see the nurse for a re-check in the morning when they return
D. Following the district’s protocol regarding when to notify parents of multiple instances of lice
within a grade level occurring within a brief time period (practice is to notify grade level upon 2nd
confirmed case of lice)
To accomplish the goal of managing instances of lice at Secondary school, we can help by:
A. Providing information about head lice on Campus Nurse’s individual websites or at the following
link: http://www.cdc.gov/parasites/lice/head/
B. Instructing the parent that their child needs to be treated before returning to school and that
they may choose to see the nurse for a re-check in the morning when they return
To accomplish the goal of managing instances of lice, parents can help by:
A. Notifying a school staff member (nurse or teacher) if active lice is found on your child outside of
school
B. Checking siblings at home
C. Treating for head lice and following packaging directions exactly; for many treatments you must
re-treat in 10-14 days to ensure there will not be a re-infestation
D. Checking for nits (or eggs) every day for two full weeks; if you miss one, this issue can redevelop
E. Checking children periodically for lice and especially after playdates and sleepovers
By encouraging more communication between parents, the community and school staff, we can greatly
reduce the spread of lice among our schools. It takes participation from everyone. If you have
questions about head lice and its treatment, please see the information found at the link above. You
may also contact our Health and Social Programs Coordinator at 512-533-6041.
Thank you,

Each year approximately 6 to 12 million children between the ages of 3 and 12
years of age are infested with head lice.1 While the odds of your son or daughter
developing head lice are relatively small, the following includes useful information
on how to spot and treat this condition.

Head Lice: A Real Head Scratcher
How do I prevent head lice?
Head lice are small parasitic insects that survive by
removing small amounts of blood from the scalp
every few hours.1 Generally found close to the scalp,
primarily around the ears and at the back of the neck,
the adult louse is about the size of a sesame seed and
can be the color of your child’s hair.1 Eggs, or nits, are
smaller and are silver in color.1
While preventing head lice entirely can be difficult,
children should avoid head to head contact during
lice outbreaks. Secondly, parents should discourage
their children from sharing personal items such as
hats, scarves, headbands, helmets, brushes, combs
or pillows to decrease the likelihood of spread from
one person to another. All recently worn clothing,
hats, bedding, and towels used by anyone having lice
or thought to be exposed to lice can be washed in
hot water (130°)or dry cleaned. Personal care items
such as combs, brushes and hair clips should also be
washed in hot water. Toys such as stuffed animals can
be placed in a hot dryer for 30 minutes or in a plastic
bag for 2 weeks.4
What are the symptoms of head lice?
The most common symptom of head lice is itching
caused by an allergic reaction to the louse saliva. There
may be redness or sores caused by scratching. Your
child may be irritable and experience sleeplessness.2
How common are head lice?
About one in every 100 U.S. elementary school
children will be infested with head lice in any given
year.3 Infestation can occur throughout the year,
although a peak is generally experienced during
summer and back-to-school time periods. Girls are
more likely than boys to become infested because of
sharing personal hair items.1
How can I treat head lice?
Treatments for head lice include:
• Over-the-Counter (OTC) products
• Prescription products
• Alternative therapies — natural and herbal.
These products have not been proven effective
and are not regulated by the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA).5,6
• Nit picking (hair combing) with a fine-tooth comb
is often used to remove the nits (eggs) from the
hair. Combing takes time and patience. While it
may remove the eggs or empty shells, alone, it is
not considered an effective treatment for head lice.6
Many approved products are safe and effective but
like all medical treatments, they must be used as
directed by parents. Also, studies have shown that
head lice are learning to outsmart many pesticides
and are developing resistance to OTC pyrethrin and
pyrethroid products, in much the same way that some
bacteria have developed resistance to antibiotics.6
How do you get head lice?
Lice are “equal opportunity” parasites. They infest all
socioeconomic groups, races, genders and ages, but
are more commonly found in children due to their
close contact with each other.1 While head lice are not
considered an infectious disease, spread from one child to
another can occur primarily through direct head to head
contact or secondarily through the sharing of personal
items such as hats, scarves, helmets, brushes, combs or
pillows.1 It is important for you to know that lice are not
a sign of poor hygiene and they do not spread disease.
If someone in your child’s class at school develops head
lice, there is no reason to panic and automatically assume
that your child will “catch” head lice.
How do I know if my child has head lice?
If a child is suspected of having head lice, he or she
should be examined by a medical professional.3
Diagnosis of head lice is made on the basis of
symptoms and confirmed through the identification of
a live louse on the head. If your child is scratching his
or her head, and you see red bite marks, sores, lice or
nits on their scalp, he or she should be examined by a
medical professional.3
This program is supported through an
educational grant to the National Association
of School Nurses from Shionogi Pharma, Inc.

Asst. Supt. for Curriculum &
Instruction takes principal job
at Clifton HS near Waco
Becky Burnett, LTISD Assistant Superintendent for
Curriculum and Instruction, has been selected as the
new principal of Clifton High School near Waco.
Ms. Burnet began her career in education in 1989 as
a speech pathologist with the Wise County Special
Education Co-Op in Decatur, TX. She came to Lake
Travis ISD in 2007 and has served students in various
capacities including as Director of Special Services,
Assistant Superintendent for Student Services and
most recently, as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, a position she’s held since 2012.
“Becky has done an outstanding job of leading our
curriculum and instruction department during her time
with us.” LTISD Superintendent Dr. Brad Lancaster
said. “In particular, she has been instrumental in the
preparation and acquisition of key grants that have
helped our district fund various digital learning initiatives. Becky will be missed, and we wish her the very
best as she takes on this new and exciting role.”
Ms. Burnett’s final day at Lake Travis ISD will be June 18. She will begin her tenure at Clifton High
School in July. The school is located minutes from Ms. Burnett’s permanent residence on Lake Whitney.
LTISD officials expect to name Ms. Burnett’s successor later this summer.

District releases results of parent climate survey
More than 90 percent of participants in a spring climate survey of Lake Travis Independent School District parents and guardians rated their child’s school ‘A’ or ‘B,’ LTISD superintendent Dr. Brad Lancaster shared with the school board during its regular meeting
in May.
“Our school district is only as strong as the support it receives from the community,” Dr.
Lancaster said. “Families want to set their roots down in Lake Travis, and parents want
to send their children to our schools. This is a positive trend for our district, but we can
only properly prepare for the future if we take the time to evaluate our present. Overall,
the feedback we received through the survey is very positive. Results will be used for
planning purposes, to inform future decisions, and ultimately, to make program improvements across our district.”
To ensure content validity, LTISD partnered with Virginia-based research and communications firm K12 Insight for survey development and deployment. The survey was made
available online and in hardcopy format, both in English and Spanish, from March 26
through April 10. The survey focused on school issues such as academic preparation,
student support, parent engagement, safety, school operations and school leadership,
communications, and bond program satisfaction.

As we approach the completion of the 2014-2015
school year, the LTISD Food and Nutrition Services
(FANS) department has begun to settle all meal
accounts which currently have a negative balance.
Therefore, FANS will implement a “no negative balance” policy for all meal accounts beginning May 18,
2015. Students will not be able to charge meals
or snacks that would incur a negative balance
equivalent to 2 complete meals (as is allowed during
most of the regular school calendar). If a student
would like to purchase a plate and their account is
at zero ($0.00) or below, they will be given a cheese
sandwich meal. Please use this opportunity to replenish your child’s MySchoolBucks account so that

Thirty-one Lake Travis ISD seventh graders recognized for
high achievement on ACT, SAT exams
Thirty-one students from Hudson Bend and Lake Travis middle schools have been recognized for their high ACT or SAT scores as part of the Duke University Talent Identification Program—or Duke TIP, a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving academically
gifted and talented youth.
According to the program’s website, the Duke TIP identifies seventh-grade students
based on standardized test scores achieved while attending elementary or middle
school. Candidates are then invited to complete either the SAT Reasoning Test or the
ACT Assessment Exam for College Entrance.
“Traditional testing at grade level often fails to accurately measure the academic capabilities of our country’s brightest students,” explained TIP executive director, Martha
Putallaz. “That is why Duke TIP provides gifted students with the opportunity to take an
above grade level test like the ACT or SAT. Testing above grade level offers families a
better understanding of their child’s academic potential and provides them with guidance
on what to provide in terms of academic enrichment beyond the traditional classroom
setting.”
Duke TIP provides all talent search participants with a comparative results summary to
help interpret their scores, as well as educational materials and publications to help them
use their ability more effectively. As part of the Duke TIP program, a Grand Recognition
Ceremony was held May 18 on the Duke University campus in Durham, North Carolina
to honor students who met the qualifying score criteria. Hudson Bend Middle School
students Peter Ikonomopoulos and Jake Reid were selected for Grand Recognition.

Class of 2015 to walk across
Cavalier Stadium June 4
Student-led campaign results
in purchase of water bottle
fountains, reduction in plastics
Lake Travis High School principal Kimberly Brents
is pleased to announce that the commencement
ceremony for the Class of 2015 will be held at 8:00
p.m., Thursday, June 4 at Cavalier Stadium. According to district officials, this will be the first time that a
Lake Travis High School graduation ceremony will
be held outdoors. Ticket information, parking, plans
for inclement weather and other important information is posted under ‘Latest Headlines & Announcements’ on the Lake Travis High School homepage,
linked here.
At the beginning of each school year, students in
Advanced Placement Environmental Science at
Lake Travis High School are assigned a stewardship
project that will benefit both the environment and the
local community. One project in particular, led by seniors Carlee Young and Katie Werdenberg, proved
to do exactly that and much more.
“We learned that, on average, our school sells approximately 9,120 plastic water bottles each month
during the school year,” Carlee said. We wanted to
do something to reduce that, so we met with our
school PTO and they agreed to fund a water bottle
filling station for the round (main) gym.”
The girls, however, were determined to make a
bigger impact that would benefit the larger student
population.
LWE hosts district annual
robotics showcase
“We got in contact with Elkay (water bottle filling
station manufacturer) and they gave us a discounted
price on a second station,” Carlee continued. “So
with a reduced price in mind, Katie and I designed
t-shirts to sell to our friends, family and classmates.
With lots of support from the school as well as from
our amazing teachers, we raised enough money
to install a second water bottle filling station in the
cafeteria. But the best part is, our students loved
the stations so much that the PTO sponsored a third
filling station in the English hall. In a just little over
a month, we have saved more than 3,000 plastic
water bottles.
Jennifer Gidley and Lauren Wold lead the AP
Environmental Science program at Lake Travis High
School.
Lakeway Elementary hosted the annual LTISD Robotics Showcase on May 15th. Utilizing EV3 Robotics, 5th grade students from all elementary Discovery classes showcased their creativity and ingenuity
for peers, parents, and community members.

LTHS hosts first World Geography
fair
The Cavalier Café at Lake Travis High School was
briefly transformed into a ‘world’s fair’ on May 29th as
Pre-Advanced Placement World Geography students
hosted their first World Geography Fair.
Students made 3-D visuals of their ideas and presented them to approximately 400 sixth graders from Hudson Bend Middle School. The idea was inspired by
‘Ninja’ Todd Nesloney, one of several keynote speakers featured at the LT Learning Together Conference
for district teachers and staff held earlier this spring.
The program was customized for LTISD students by
district Learning and Teaching Coach Tara Banton,
together with LTHS Pre-AP teachers Chris Beck,
Dana Browning, Paul Knepper, Melanie Naquin,
Molly Primm, and Hudson Bend Middle School social
studies teacher Amy Castillo. Event organizers are
already at work planning for next year’s fair.
