GROUP LETTER
The
month
of
February reminds
me of perseverance.
When winter still
has us in its grip we
see perseverance in
the bare hedgerows
and gardens of the
Hambleden Valley
in the form of the snowdrop, that
gallant little flower that bravely pushes
its way up through the dark, icy soil
to bring us the first sign that new life
is on its way.
Apparently the colder
and gloomier the weather the longer
the snowdrop is in flower – now that is
perseverance!
circumstances of her pregnancy.
Snowdrops – also known as Candlemas
Bells – are not the only evidence of
perseverance at this time of year. It
can also to be found in the little group
of characters that we meet in the story
surrounding Candlemas, as we celebrate
Jesus’ presentation in the Temple.
All are welcome as we celebrate the
presentation of Christ in the Temple at our
Group Service in Fawley on 2 February,
10am and Candlemas Evensong at
Fingest, 6pm. As a reminder of that
love of Christ that always perseveres,
do join us at our special Valentine’s
Service on Sunday 16 February, 11am in
Hambleden.
Also in this little group are two elderly
people - Simeon and Anna - who have
spent years in the Temple, persevering
in their watching and waiting for the
coming of this special child. As Mary
and Joseph arrive with Jesus, Simeon
instantly recognises the child, taking him
in his arms and praising God.
Finally we have the child, Jesus
himself: the One who knows all about
perseverance through his love for us,
which knows no limits; the One who
brings light into the darkness and reveals
to us signs of new life.
First there is Mary, the young woman
with a persevering spirit who is
prepared to say ‘yes’ to God and
becomes the mother of Jesus. Alongside
her is her loyal husband Joseph
who, in his obedience to God,
determines to persevere with his
marriage to Mary despite the unusual
And if there is something you are
persevering with this month, may you
find guidance and encouragement in
Christ’s unfailing light and love.
God bless, Sue Morton

GROUP NOTES AND NEWS
Hello to the brook!
The readers of the Group Magazine
must have supernatural powers for just as
I finished reading the beautifully written
but rather sad anonymous article
‘farewell to the brook’, it returned!
Flowing as strong as ever. It was back
the day before the magazine was
printed. Perhaps considering the amount
of rain we have had it was not surprising
though I had bet on the end of February.
Still it is great to have her back, keep on
predicting we might eventually get a
better world!

February Filldike?
January certainly lived up to a fill
dike month. What with the strongest
winds in a 100 years and rain and more
rain it could not be called a pleasant
month. It was mild however which was a
blessing. What will February bring?
If it stays mild we should see the
Hambleden valley toads starting their
annual migration to their spawning pond
in the grounds of Greenlands toward
the end of the month. They move over
long distances and it is quite possible that
some that arrive by the Thames have
started their journey near Stokenchurch!.
Many sadly end it under the wheels of a
car which is why, in early March just as
it is getting dark, ghostly figures appear
in Oaken grove in yellow jackets and
carrying buckets. These are the many
dedicated volunteers who help several
thousand of these amphibians over the
road every year.
This year both toads and volunteers
will find a difference. Two new large
ponds have been built in the wood to the
north of the road and we hope that some
at least will discover them and avoid
having to make the dangerous crossing,
Lent Group in Frieth
As mentioned in the January
magazine, there will be a Lent Group in
Frieth this year. The first session will be
held on Thursday March 6th from 8pm to
9:30pm and will be at Jenny and Doyne
North’s, Rivendell, Frieth.
The dates for the other sessions are
March 13th, 20th, 27th, April 3rd and
10th. The venues for these dates will be
announced in due course as will the title
of the sessions. I look forward to seeing
you, so please put the dates in your
diary. Everyone is welcome and you do
not need any experience to come along
and explore together with others. If you
need more information or want to ask
about something, please do contact me
on 01491 413155.

but even more so when you join a new
school. As the new headteacher I am
especially
excited
about
joining
Frieth and becoming part of this fantastic
school. I have been warmly welcomed
by all the pupils, parents, staff and
governors and already feel part of the
‘family’! I am also very much looking forward to meeting you all in the wider community at future school and community
events.
Talking of events; this term promises
to be a fabulous learning adventure
including a whole school focus on Art
for our topic ‘Take a Picture’. This will
culminate in a very special event towards
the end of term - watch this space!
Mrs Jo Reid
Headteacher
These ponds have cost us a great deal to
dig and make as best we can to the toad’s
needs, with many little bays and shallow
areas plus brushwood submerged for
strings of spawn to be attached to.
We and the toads owe much of this to
the generosity of the Landowner plus
several NGOs who have provided
money. Will the toads use them? We
can only hope so. They are notoriously
faithful to the ponds where their
ancestors were hatched but in the new
ponds they have the best of everything.
Our cover this month shows a Barn
Owl, our most beautiful owl by far. With
it’s pale beige to white plumage it looks
like a ghost as it drifts over the fields in
the twilight seeking it’s dinner of small
mammals. A few years ago it was hardly
seen in the valley having became very
scarce but since more and more people
have put up barn owl nesting boxes we
have seen a resurgence in their number
and they can now be seen quite
commonly in the valley. They are also
one of the very few species of bird
that are found in every continent save
Antarctica, so let’s celebrate their return
by giving them a place on our cover.

FAWLEY
Hambleden Valley Garden Club
At the January meeting John Negus
gave a delightful and lively presentation
of an interesting selection of plants with
lovely photographs and lots of helpful
advice on how to care for them. His
style of engaging with and including his
audience throughout the evening was
very enjoyable.
At the next meeting on 4th
February, Helen Yemm, journalist,
broadcaster, author and self taught
gardener, will be speaking on “Garden
Downsizing”.

She then introduced Maddy Fitzek,
a local beautician who demonstrated a
new range of products from America.
The Mary Kay products are entirely
organic and pure, and have been
marketed since 1963. It is unique in
that it is not sold in shops, but has
therapists advising and working
in
private homes. She offered a free
consultation to any member contacting
her, and a sample of the products. She then
invited Margaret to be her model for the
session, and tried various products on her,
showing the right and wrong way to
apply eye make-up, proving that with
the right technique improvements can
certainly be made to more mature skins!
Frances thanked Maddy, and hoped that
members had picked up some good tips
and advice.
Teas were provided by Ann Lazur,
Angela Detsiny and Louise Andrews.

January Meeting
Frances Emmett welcomed 30 members to the first meeting of 2014, a good
attendance for January when so many
have succumbed to colds and flu. She
had sent flowers to Gill Busby, who had
been in hospital over Christmas but
is now making a good recovery. The
subscriptions for the forthcoming year
were collected, and the new programmes
issued. The Resolutions were discussed
for the AGM, and members were
issued with voting forms to be completed
by them, and counted before the next
meeting. Frances asked members to help
stock a “Good as New” sale to be held
on March 15th at Frieth Village Hall. All
items to be delivered to Frances the week
beforehand. It will be one of the main
fund raisers for the year. By the time
you read this we will have enjoyed
our walk from “Spade Oak”, Bourne
End, on January 22nd. Our February

mesmerizing song of her own
composition,
accompanying
herself on guitar; Kate Ashby was boldly
unaccompanied as she unleashed a
bravura concertino from her clarinet.
Trumpeter and style icon Sid Busby was
sadly indisposed on the night, so Magnus
returned - with brother Ivo elbowing
Stephen Armstrong aside to take over
organ duty. The pair of them steered us
faultlessly through ‘Veni Emmanuel’, with
a fabulously rakish honking blue note to
supplement the final tierce de Picardie.
Roger Metcalfe continued with a
measured and insightful meditation
on our men and women serving in
Afghanistan; Hilary Beck-Burridge held
our hand through a splendid personal
celebration of The Rubaiyat. Sir William
McAlpine entranced us with his vivid and
boisterous recollections of Fawley in the
forties. Katie Moberly and Ben Locke
arrived at the eleventh hour - hurrah!
that’s what the eleventh hour is for!and stirred us up with guitar and voice,
some of it broadcast from the belfry.
Jeremy Mais conducted the whole rackety
business with dignified insouciance.
2013 Railway Nativity at Fawley
Hill Station
This was the first time Fawley has
been responsible for the whole of the
Nativity: usually we just provide the
station, mulled wine etc, labour; but this
time we had to provide children too and,
thanks to the great new influx of young in
Fawley, we were able to do it.
BIG THANKS to all who helped. It was
even more bonkers than usual owing to
horrid rain, so shepherds did not want to
Afterwards we drank mulled wine and
filled the church with raucous, convivial
and celebratory conversation. A special
service for a special village.

Angel Gabriel arrived together by
train..???? but the angels couldn’t stand
on top of the tunnel ‘cos it was just too
wet. All the kids were truly amazing and
didn’t let the rain bother them at all and
we had a last-minute stand-in Magi who, I
think, was a young Hester?? Thank you.
Father Christmas couldn’t see properly
as he had left his glasses on the sleigh...
but “Mary” and Mrs. Claus helped him
differentiate between boys and girls
so we hope all children went off with
something suitable, if small. At least the
rain stopped before HE got here - as
there were an awful lot of children and
they would have got VERY wet waiting
to see him!
So - again: thanks to all of the
following for helping, for bringing MINCE

braved the weather and made it worth

FINGEST
went off for lunch and a nap before the
carols on the green, rattling jingle bells
and singing their hearts out. What a
perfect Christmas Eve!
The Hon Lady McAlpine
Thank goodness she doesn’t read the
paper or see Facebook! He would never
have been allowed back in! The tapirs
were clearly pleased to see him and we
are very relieved but we do know he will
be much missed by those who fed him
apples and bananas and sandwiches on
the towpath.
On the 20th a “Village Party” was held
at Fawley Hill with the express intention
of introducing all the new Fawleyites to
those who have been here for years. Only
villagers were invited so it was easy to ask
“Who are you? and Where do you live?”
The house buzzed with conversation and
the playroom was heaving with children
covered in chocolate from the chocolate
fountain, the pianos were played, guitars
were strummed, horns were blown... and
a lot of friendships launched. The first
people arrived at 6.00 p.m. and the last
left at 1.30 a.m. We deem this to have
been a Good Party and will definitely
repeat the exercise: perhaps in the
summer and again at Christmas.
Christmas Eve Treasure Hunt: Marina
Fogle decided the children needed
occupying on Christmas Eve and having
heard that Father Christmas had lost
a few precious tree decorations, she
gathered up all the village tinies to hunt
for them.
They found all of them and ended up at
Fawley Hill where, as it happened, Santa
had just stopped off for a quick cup of
tea. So they were able to return all the
decorations and Santa thanked them and
handed each one one of the gifts that he
had planned to put in their stockings
later that day. After photos and much
chocolate consumption on the part of
the smalls, he waved goodbye and went
in search of his reindeer. The children
FINGEST
Candlemas in Fingest Sunday
2nd February 6pm
The Feast of the Presentation of Jesus
at the Temple, or Candlemas, is one
of the 12 Great Feasts in the Eastern
Orthodox Church. Yet here, despite being
a ‘Principal Feast’ in the Church of
England, after the glitz, partying and
glamour of a western Christmas, this
celebration can seem low key to the
point of oblivion, devoid of hijacked pagan rituals and symbols (well, almost).
However, that simplicity reinforces, in
part, the point.
According to Luke’s gospel, Mary
and Joseph took the baby Jesus to the
Temple in Jerusalem forty days after
his birth, to perform the redemption of
the firstborn, in obedience to the Law
of Moses after the birth of a male child
(Leviticus 12, Exodus 13:12-15). Hence the
Presentation is celebrated forty days after
Christmas. Luke explicitly says that
Joseph and Mary took the option
provided for poor people, that is those
who could not afford a lamb (Leviticus
12:8), sacrificing “a pair of turtledoves, or
two young pigeons.”
Bringing Jesus into the temple, the
holy family encountered Simeon. Luke
records that Simeon had been promised that “he should not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ”.
20
HAMBLEDEN
Simeon prayed the prayer that would
become known as the Nunc Dimittis, or
Canticle of Simeon, which prophesied
the redemption of the world by Jesus:
Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servant
depart in peace; according to Thy word:
for mine eyes have seen Thy salvation,
which Thou hast prepared before the
face of all people: to be a light to lighten
the gentiles and to be the glory of Thy
people Israel. (Luke 2:29-32)
So two poor people made their
modest offering on the birth of their
firstborn son. No glitz, razzmatazz or
expensive offerings. Simple, honest and
heartfelt. Here in 2014 all are invited to
St. Bartholemew’s, Fingest, to celebrate
Candlemas in our very traditional
manner. Hundreds of flickering candles, nestling in greenery, amidst our
plain, simple church that reaches back
almost half way in time to the event we
commemorate each and every year.
Jan O’Brien
generally bemoan the state of English
cricket, share a joke, discuss a few ways
we might improve our village, and enjoy
yourself, then please join us on February
11 in the Village Hall at 12.00 noon
for the inaugural meeting of this new
men’s group which we hope will become
a monthly get-together. A free drink
followed by a two course lunch and
coffee. £12.00.
Ideas for the Valley that have been
suggested include an Internet Cafe, a
Table Tennis Club, both in the Village
Hall, a Book Exchange, a Share your
Car Scheme, outings that would not be
covered by existing groups such as a visit
to the Mini assembly Plant, watch Tower
Bridge being raised or Go Up The Shard
and Learn to play Croquet. Please bring
ideas of your own for discussion at this
first meeting.
We are giving this notice as wide a
circulation as we can but do mention
it to anyone whom you think could be
interested. If this is something that
appeals, whether you can make the first
meeting or not, please let either of us
know by phone or email.

And it was ever so.
Should you seek a good supporter,
You’ll not have far to search:
His presence keeps the heating on,
He’s the pillar of Ham’church.
Verging on…
2013 Christmas attendance in the
pews was up 3% overall on 2012.
Christmas Eve Christingle saw 340 in
and under the pews, a big increase. Only
43 quiet heroes attended church on
Christmas day, a big drop from 105
in 2012. Very sad for those of us old
enough to remember packed pews on
Christmas morning. Perhaps there
is a trend to make one’s Christmas
observance early, as 194 were at Nine
Lessons and 100 were at the Advent
Carol service. Perhaps we are like a
volcano, erupting early and spent out by
Christmas Day in more ways than one.
Hail to these quiet heroes,
Champions of the age;
Unknown to fame and fortune,
No strutters on life’s stage;
The humble representative
Of folk like me and you:
Hail the unsung Christmas Christian The person in the pew.
He’ll never hit the headlines;
He’ll rarely cause a stir.
(Forgive me ardent feminists,
If I say ‘him’ not ‘her’.)
But faithfully on Sundays
You’ll find him on his perch
Upholding Hambleden traditions;
By being in the church.
He sits where he has always sat,
While all around him, change
Brings odd new prayers, modern hymns
And service booklets strange;
He pays his dues discreetly,
Signs gift aid forms on cue:
What would we do without him The person in the pew?
Though rectors may pontificate
And curates come and go,
The layman’s there to hold the fort,
On high days and holidays
You’ll find him in his place,
In sober dress and countenance,
And Church of England face.
But mock him not nor spurn him,
But give the man his due:
He’s the Ham’church great survivor,
The person in the pew.
Prayer for Grandpa
Dear God,

ladies on
