Information Technology
King Edward’s School
Pupils need to use computers in
a variety of locations: classrooms,
laboratories, Boarding Houses and
at home. The School has a wide
range of computing facilities available
to pupils, which are constantly
being updated and improved; and a
wireless network operates across
the whole campus.
students may connect their own
laptop to the network to access
their files and the internet.
They also have access to desktop
machines in the Information
Centre, classrooms and in their
Boarding Houses, together with
The Sixth Form Centre for the
Sixth Formers.
Pupils in the Lower School are able
to borrow laptops to be used for
homework in their House. They also
have access to desktop machines
in the Information Centre as well
as numerous machines distributed
amongst the different
departments.
Printers are provided in most
classrooms and the Boarding Houses.
Extra facilities such as scanners,
colour printers, digital cameras and
digital video are provided in the
Information Centre. Most classrooms
are equipped with data projectors
and some have interactive white
boards.
From the Third Form onwards,
Back up is provided initially by
teachers during lessons and also by
a friendly and approachable
help-desk in the Information
Centre. Here pupils can learn
new skills, sort out problems
and get advice.

International Baccalaureate
Since its introduction at King
Edward’s in 2004, the IB has
provided an exciting and challenging
programme for our Sixth Form
pupils. It is our sole curriculum as
we believe it is undoubtedly the
best preparation for life beyond
school available today.
The IB requires students to
combine breadth with depth in
their studies, the programme
ensuring that they study from
a variety of disciplines including
maths, their own language, a
foreign language, a humanity and
a science. There is also scope to
study specific areas of individual
interest in depth.
In addition to their six subjects,
they are required to write an
Extended Essay on a topic of
choice, take a course in Theory
of Knowledge and complete
a programme of Creativity,
Action and Service. This ‘core’
is particularly appreciated by
universities as it demonstrates
the ability to think critically, to
research independently, to work
as a team and to ‘think out of
the box’.
In fact, universities consider IB
students to be extremely well
prepared for university study, the
drop out rate amongst IB pupils
in the first year of university
being virtually zero. To quote an
Lower Sixth Form
Admissions Tutor from Cambridge
University, “IB students hit the
ground running”.
In contrast to A Levels where
students usually sit three sets of
public examinations during their
Sixth Form years, the IB has only
one set of external examinations
in May of the final year. The results
are published in early July, much
earlier than A levels, and
there is no grade inflation.
Qualifications are crucial for our
young people today, as is the
preparation for life which we hope
Sixth Form provides. However,
the most important question is
“Do students enjoy their Sixth
Form studies?” and the response
from our IB students is usually:
“It’s hard work, but yes, we really
do enjoy it”.

Leavers’ Destinations 2011
University / Other
King Edward’s is an academic
school admitting pupils with a
broad range of ability. In common
with many top schools we do not
participate in league tables of
results, which we believe to
be misleading. However, we
understand our IB results put us
among the top co-educational
boarding and day schools in the
UK and almost all our students
proceed to a university of
their choice.
“The IB is purely and simply a superior
education” a recent Sixth Form pupil
“We really do appreciate your personal
commitment to delivering success for
King Edward’s pupils” a Sixth Form parent

Information disclaimer
The material in this prospectus is provided
for information purposes only and,
although believed to be correct at the
time of publication, does not form part
of any agreement between Parents and
King Edward’s School Witley. Although
we will make every effort to ensure that
information is up to date and accurate,
prospective parents wishing to place
specific reliance on information contained

sending their child to the School.

King Edward’s School
The School’s historic charitable
foundation provides bursary
support whilst the School itself
offers assistance through
scholarships.
Bursaries, Scholarships and Discounts
Bursaries
Bursarial assistance (provided by
the School’s Foundation and the
City of London, usually to a
maximum of 50% of the fees)
is offered to families where
boarding or the King Edward’s
style of education is a particular
need. Applicants must satisfy the
normal academic criteria for entry.
Examples of qualifying circumstances
usually include some form of trauma
in the family such as where there is
only one parent, where one or both
parents are seriously ill or where
there is a chronically ill or disabled
sibling demanding much attention
and time, with the result that the
parent is unable to devote enough
time to the child’s needs. The
children of clergy, missionaries
and other special circumstances
might also be considered.
The level of bursary awarded
depends on the family’s total income
and assets and need as outlined.
Each case is assessed annually
in the light of any changed
circumstances and, whilst there is
no undertaking to align any increases
with any rise in the school fees,
once awarded, a bursary normally
applies for the duration of a pupil’s
school career at King Edward’s.
Our objective is to ensure that
assistance is sufficient to cover the
child’s continuance at the School.
Strong links with the City Livery
Companies and other charitable
institutions enable us to recommend
other sources of funding in cases
of additional need. These can help
raise the level of support of our
most deserving pupils to something
approaching 100% of fees.
Additional means-tested support
is available to current pupils for
some school trips and instrumental
music lessons.
Scholarships
Academic scholarships, up to 30%
of the fees, may be awarded at
age 11 on the basis of performance
in the entrance tests which are
tenable for two years. For these
pupils and those who are joining
at age 13, academic scholarships
are awarded on the basis of merit
in competitive examination and
interview.
Sixth Form Scholarships
Sixth Form scholarships are open to
external candidates, including one
place for a local day pupil which will
award up to 100% of fees.
A whole day assessment will take
place in February prior to admission
in September 2013.
The Court of Bridewell Royal Hospital
Music & Art Scholarships
Music and Art scholarships are
available at 11 and again at 13.
Candidates will be expected to
have succeeded in the normal
entrance examinations. For Music,
applicants at 11 should have
reached Grade 3 ABRSM on their
principal instrument and should be
studying another discipline, which
could include singing. At 13 the
standard is at Grade 5 ABRSM.
