aniversario. El evento contó con
la actuación de un numeroso
grupo de instituciones culturales
y academias de danza locales y
de otras ciudades
El festival es una excelente exposición de la extensa variedad

sábado y domingo– por donde
pasaron grupos folclóricos representando culturas de diferentes partes del mundo, desde
Hispanoamérica, Asia y Europa.

STEM Early College High
School seeks applicants

San Antonio’s first STEM Early
College High School is currently
accepting applications from incoming freshmen interested in
science, technology, engineering
and mathematics.
Nestled in the Harlandale Independent School District, STEM
Early College High School gives
students the opportunity to earn
up to 60 hours of college credit
and an associate’s degree before
they even graduate high school.
Thanks to a unique partnership
with the Alamo Colleges, students
are enrolled in college courses at
Palo Alto College in addition to
their classes at STEM Early College High School without having
to pay a dime for tuition and
textbooks.
Moreover, Texas A&M University-San Antonio guarantees
admission to all STEM Early College High School students who
graduate in the top 50 percent of
their class, hold an overall high
school GPA of a 2.0 and score a
minimum of an 860 on the SAT
Reasoning Tests as well as a minimum composite score of an 18 on
the ACT assessment.
Students work through curriculum basics such as English and
history, but have a strong focus
on science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Advanced
programs include robotics and
automation, 3D modeling and introduction to engineering careers.
In the last two years, students
have competed and advanced in
many competitions, including the
FIRST World Robotics Competition and will be taking part in the
International Underwater Robotics Competition in late June.
Any incoming ninth grade
student living in Bexar County
can apply to STEM Early College
High School.
Interested applicants must have
an overall 70 percent grade average in eight grade core subjects
and a 90 percent attendance rate.
Currently, there are only six
STEM Early College High Schools
in Texas and Harlandale’s STEM
Early College High School is the
first in a large metropolitan area.
The school was established in
August 2014 by the vision of the
Harlandale ISD Board of Trustees
and Harlandale ISD Superintendent Rey Madrigal. The campus is
located next to Harlandale Memorial Stadium at 4040 Apollo St.

PEDRO FRIEDEBERG: PRAISE OF FOLLY— Ruiz-Healy
Art is pleased to present “Pedro Friedeberg: Praise of Folly.” The
exhibition will feature an eclectic mix of Pedro Friedeberg’s art
across a fairly broad range of media including: hand woven carpets,
paintings, his iconic hand-chairs, fantastical sculptures and prints.
A catalogue will be available with an essay by Dan Cameron. One
of the master illusionists of late 20th century art, Pedro Friedeberg
is enjoying something of a resurgent moment in the second decade
of the 21st century. Ever since the 2009 retrospective of his work
at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City coincided one year
later with the definitive critical study on him, authored by James
Oles, there has been a noticeable uptick in international critical,
collector and museum attention toward his unique oeuvre. Visit

LINDA PACE FOUNDATION PRESENTS: RIVANE NEUENSCHWANDER-SECONDARY STORIES— This spring, the
Linda Pace Foundation presents the Texas debut of “Secondary
Stories,” a room-sized installation by Brazilian artist Rivane
Neuenschwander, who has become widely regarded for her often
ephemeral work that explores narratives about language, nature,
social interactions and the passing of time. Showcasing “Secondary
Stories” as well as three video installation works, the exhibition
opens at SPACE, the public gallery of the Linda Pace Foundation.
The exhibit will be on view through July 29, 2017 at Linda Pace
Foundation, 111 Camp St.
CONEY ISLAND AT THE MCNAY— The exhibition explores
and celebrates Coney Island, the most iconic, uniquely American
Amusement Park in the United States, which has served as national
cultural symbol inspiring artists, musicians, novelists, poets and
filmmakers. From Coney Island’s beginning as a watering hole
for the wealthy, through its transformation into an entertainment
mecca for the masses, to the closing of Astroland Amusement Park
following decades of urban decline, this first-of-its-kind exhibition
uses visual art as a lens to explore 150 years of Coney Island. For

honored at City Council

of personal privilege during a
recent City Council A Session to
honor retired Army Lt. Josephine
Reaves and her record of service
during World War II.
Joined by Mayor Ivy Taylor
and fellow veterans Councilman
Ray Lopez (District 6) and Councilman Cris Medina (District 7),
Councilman Gallagher presented
Lt. Reaves with a Certificate of
Commendation from the City of
San Antonio following a standing ovation by all in attendance.
Councilman Gallagher stated
that he was incredibly inspired
by Lt. Reaves’ story, strength and
courage. “We are most honored
that she is a resident of District
10 and are pleased we could
highlight her very impressive
military service,” he said.
Deemed too short to be a
nurse for the Navy, Lt. Reaves
joined the Army’s Nurse Corps
during the war and was assigned
to the 24th Evacuation Hospital.
Her unit followed the battlefields
from the beaches of Normandy,
providing care and compassion
to wounded and dying soldiers.
She eventually made her way
to San Antonio and worked as
a civil service nurse at Fort Sam
Houston.

The event is expected to bring
up topics that interest many
Texan families, as well as bring
a positive influence on younger
people ready to vote.
“Texas Young Democrats
are committed to supporting
whoever wins the Democratic
nomination for president.
When Democrats win the
White House, working families win,” Texas Democratic
Party Communications Director Tariq Thowfeek told La
Prensa. “As a party we need to
stick together to make sure that
Donald Trump and his crony
Republicans don’t turn the
clock back on all the progress
we’ve made in the last eight
years, and this caucus will
focus on driving that point
forward.”
In an effort to increase the
young vote, Texas Young
Democrats (TYD), the largest
youth political organization
in the country, is expected to
break a record of attendance
and will host the official kickoff party for the convention
tomorrow at 9 p.m. at the
Grand Hyatt Hotel- Republic
Room, 600 E. Market St. The

efforts to reach young voters
in Texas this fall to go to the
nearest voting booth and vote
Democrat.
Over 1,500 young voters
have currently signed up to
attend the convention as voting delegates, a number never
reached before.
TYD will also conduct the
TDP youth caucus meeting on
Friday from 12 to 1 p.m. at
the convention floor of the Alamodome and will vote on the
Democratic National Commit-
tee super delegate seat recommendation to the nominations
committee. This will be a floor
fight that will mark the Texas
Young Democrats to make our
country stronger and diverse for
future generations.
“The youth caucus will be
a fantastic opportunity for us
to come together and build
a common vision of a united
Democratic country. People
should expect to see levelminded, hardworking Texans
ready to help working fami-
lies… Texas Democrats are
fired up to put yet another
Democrat to the White House
in November, and you’ll see
that enthusiasm on the convention floor,” concluded
Thowfeek.
The convention will coincide
with Donald Trump’s scheduled fundraising event in San
Antonio. The Republican presidential nominee is expected to
make a stop in San Antonio
on June 17 and continue to

Camp Power Up addresses youth at risk for type 2 diabetes

type 2 diabetes attended Camp
Power Up with fun activities,
field trips and wellness education. The Camp helped them
learn ways to live a healthy
lifestyle and beat the odds of a
diabetes diagnosis.

SA United Soccer Club, Camp
Power Up took place from June
6 to June 10 at the Westside
YMCA at 2900 Ruiz St.
Organizers enrolled 50 children between the ages of 10
and 14 with multiple risk factors
for type 2 diabetes by working
with local pediatricians who
referred them. Nearly 6,000
youth attend ADA Diabetes
Camps nationwide every summer. Camp improves the lives
of children affected by diabetes
or diabetes prevention and promotes healthy lifestyle behaviors
in a fun, safe environment with
peers.
“One in 3 children in San
Antonio is overweight or obese,
a major risk factor for type 2
Diabetes,” said Maria S. Rayas,
MD, Camp Power Up medical
director and a pediatric endocrinologist for UT Kids. “With
the prediction that 1 in 3 adults
in the US will have diabetes
by 2050, it is imperative that
we invest in preventing type 2
diabetes in our children.”
Formerly known as adultonset diabetes, type 2 is the
most common form of diabetes
that affects how the body processes blood sugar. It typically
manifests in adulthood but is increasingly occurring in children
as well, with symptoms such
as frequent urination, hunger
fatigue and blurred vision. Type
2 diabetes is often treated with
a healthy diet, exercise, medication and/or insulin therapy.
Diabetes is a leading cause of
heart attack, stroke, blindness,
kidney failure and amputation
in adults.
A goal of Camp Power Up
is to help area youth break the
cycle before the onset of type
2 diabetes in adulthood. Participants are ages 10 to 14 with
obesity and a family history of
type 2 diabetes. Other contributing factors include hypertension
diagnosis, elevated Hemoglobin
A1C, or having a close relative
with type 2 diabetes.
“We really wanted to help
children and their families to

recognize at an early age how to
manage risk factors,” said Elizabeth Tobias, senior executive director of the American Diabetes
Association South Texas Area.

the tools and inspiration early
on, they will be better equipped
to avoid health consequences
in adulthood and live longer,
healthier lives.”
Through a blend of activities
and wellness education, the
camp emphasized key ways for
children to begin and maintain healthy habits in order to
prevent them from receiving a
diabetes diagnosis.
“Utilizing fun, educational
games and field trips, Camp
Power Up aims to provide atrisk children in our community
with the knowledge that healthy
living and physical activity can
prevent type 2 diabetes,” added
Rayas.

Me temo que los ataques de
Trump no solo se dirigen a la
comunidad méxico-americana
sino que amenazan al estado
de derecho en Estados Unidos. Como abogado, aprecio
mucho la crucial función que
cumplen los honorables e im-
parciales juzgados en nuestro
gobierno.
Atacar públicamente a un
distinguido juez federal debido a su grupo étnico es muy
peligroso, no solo porque los
comentarios son racistas sino
porque deslegitimiza y da
carácter político a nuestros
jueces.
Me preocupa que Trump no
entienda las funciones básicas
de nuestras cortes diciendo
que los jueces “aprueban leyes”
(no lo hacen), y prometiendo
nombrar jueces de la Corte Suprema que investigarán a sus
opositores políticos (la Corte
Suprema no hace tal cosa).
Esto se aleja demasiado de
la norma en el sistema político
americano. Un reciente panel
de expertos legales conservadores y liberales reunidos por
The New York Times concluyó
que Trump amenaza el estado
de derecho y, como presidente, podría dañar gravemente
la integridad de los juzgados
federales.
Espero que los provocativos comentarios sobre el juez
Curiel logren que nos detengamos y entendamos cuán
peligrosa es esta retórica.

Twitter la foto de un ‘taco
bowl’ el Cinco de Mayo, con
las palabras “Amo a los hispanos” fue condescendiente
y puramente idiota. Sin embargo, estos nuevos comentarios son algo mucho peor:
son abiertamente ofensivos
e insultan la integridad de
todos los méxico-americanos
patriotas y servidores de la
justicia, la comunidad hispana
en general, y nuestro sistema
judicial.
Donald Trump está dividien­
do a nuestro país cuando deberíamos tratar de unir a los
americanos de todo origen. Le
pido a todo funcionario electo,
sea republicano o demócrata,
que denuncie públicamente
esta inaceptable declaración
y demuestre que esta actitud
no será aceptada de parte de
ningún funcionario electo, y
mucho menos de alguien que
pretende ocupar el mayor
cargo en la nación.
