ebrated the start of construction
of the UTSA Boulevard project
on Monday morning.
Improvements include recon­
struction of the roadway, expan­
sion of the two existing lanes to
four lanes with a raised median
and new left turn lanes.
Additional enhancements
will include sidewalks, curbs,
a shared used path for pedes­
trians and bicyclists, as well
as upgrades to traffic signals,
signs and drainage. Council­
man Nirenberg explained that
over the years, UTSA Boulevard
has become a major issue for
commuters to pass through a
congestion of traffic on two lane
roads, as well as limited access
for many to get to campus, work
or even home.
“We know that the folks that
use this corridor are not just
using their cars, they are also
using their feet and bicycles,”

anun­ciada para el viernes 13
de mayo en Rosedale Park a
las 5.30 p.m. con asistencia de
representantes de la municipali­
dad y directivos de Guadalupe
Cultural Arts Center, insti­
tución organizadora del festival
que –en esta ocasión– ha tenido
como director al artista local
Juan Tejeda, quien ha estado
asociado al Guadalupe Center
como directivo e intérprete del
género tejano.
El programa musical es de 6
de la tarde a 11 de la noche con
música en vivo, comida típica,
tiendas de recuerdo y mercan­
cía propias del ambiente tejano.

CONJUNTO BLUES— The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center
presents the Texas premiere production of Conjunto Blues, an
interdisciplinary theatrical performance by San Antonio based
poet, musician and actor, Nicolás Valdez. This unique, one-night
only performance incorporates live music and character sketches
with documentary footage of musicians, academics and aficiona­
dos. Conjunto Blues weaves a personal narrative that beautifully
captures the story of the Mexican-American working class by
carrying audiences across the turbulent landscapes of the 20th
century. Following the migration of the diatonic button accordion,
beginning with its introduction to rural communities along the
U.S.-Mexico border, Valdez’s work speaks to the social conditions
that led to the evolution of conjunto music as an expression of
cultural resistance and liberation. Thursday, May 12 at 6 p.m. at

H-E-B launches grocery delivery
service for S.A. customers

have grown in popularity in re­
cent years by allowing custom­
ers the convenience of shopping
from anywhere. Companies like
Shipt (Shipt.com) and Instacart
(Instacart.com) connect H-E-B
customers with personal shop­
pers who shop for and deliver
groceries straight to their home.
Customers who sign up for
an annual membership with
Shipt, prior to the May 25
launch will receive $50 in gro­
cery credit.
Additionally in May, H-E-B
will launch curbside pick-up
at the H-E-B plus! located
at Bandera and Loop 1604.
Customers will be able to
visit hebtoyou.com to shop and
schedule a pick-up for the same
day. Orders received by 1 p.m.
will be ready for pick-up in time
for dinner.
H-E-B’s launch of grocery
delivery services and curbside

S.A. Film Commission announces winner of S.A. Local Filmmakers Grant

The San Antonio Film Com­
mission, a division of the City
of San Antonio Department
for Culture & Creative Devel­
opment, announces local film­
maker Fidel Ruiz-Healy is the
recipient of the San Antonio
Local Filmmakers Grant.
The matching grant, in the
amount of $25,000, will assist
Ruiz-Healy with the production
of his feature-length motion pic­
ture, “Rio Grande City,” which
is currently in production and
scheduled for completion in
2017.
The San Antonio Local Film­
makers Grant, launched in
2012 by the City of San An­
tonio, is a competitive grant
awarded through an application
process. The program supports
local filmmakers who have at
least $25,000 in funding com­
mitments in place and have a
feature-length motion picture
in the pre-production stage
at the time of the application
submission.
The grant is intended to
help support and stimulate the
growth of the local filmmaking
community and the production
of commercial motion pictures
in San Antonio. The program
awarded two grants previously
to Kevin and Robin Nations for
the film, “My Dog the Cham­
pion,” and Buddy Calvo for his
film, “Stage V.”
“The City congratulates Dis­
trict 7 resident Fidel Ruiz-Healy
on being selected as the recipient
of the Local Filmmakers Grant,”
said District 7 City Councilman
Cris Medina. “We are proud to
continue supporting local film­
makers with resources that en­
courage the production of films
in San Antonio and highlight
the neighborhoods, culture and
history of our city.”
“Rio Grande City,” is set in
Rio Grande City and Ciudad
Rio Bravo – twin towns on op­
posite sides of the Texas-Mexico
border. The fragile peace of both
towns is shattered when two
miscreants from Rio Grande
City are enlisted by a corrupt
Texas sheriff to pull off an as­
sassination attempt on a cartel
leader. A stylized, absurdist
satire about the conflict on the
border, “Rio Grande City” is
a black-comedy wrapped in a
crime caper that highlights the
ubiquity of corruption on both
sides of the line.
The film’s writer/director,
Ruiz-Healy, grew up in San
Antonio and relocated to New
York City where he studied at
NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.
Upon graduating, he founded
The American Standard Film
Co., an independent produc­
tion company specializing in
developing feature films, music
videos and commercials.
He and his partners, Tyler
Walker and Jordan Michael
Blake, have had their work
screened at festivals around the
world. Ruiz-Healy’s last film, “A
Band of Thieves,” screened at
several prestigious festivals, and
earned him “Best San Antonio
Filmmaker” at the San Antonio
Film Festival and “Best Film
Shot in Texas” at the Alamo
City Film Festival. His first
feature film, “The Homefront,”
which was produced in San
Antonio, is currently entering
the festival circuit.
“I’m honored and excited to
receive the San Antonio Local
Filmmakers Grant and to be
able to shoot another produc­
tion in the city I love,” said
Ruiz-Healy. “It is resources like
this that are vital to bringing
together a vibrant and growing
film community and create work
that will help showcase San
Antonio as a desirable location
for filmmaking.”

Lourdes Pérez and May Nasr in concert

under bombs and across barri­
ers joins two great voices from
the Arab and Latin American
worlds.

Justice Center for a rare concert
with Lebanon’s May Nasr and
Puerto Rico’s Lourdes Pérez
as they celebrate the release of
their full length Spanish/Arabic
duet album, “Written in Water”
(Escrito en Agua) on May 14 at
7 p.m. at 922 San Pedro Ave.
Nasr and Pérez are consid­
ered musical icons and voices
for peace in different worlds,
oceans apart. It was the sound
of one song during the bomb­
ing of Lebanon in 2006 that
sparked their unlikely connec­
tion.
One of those devastating
nights, a friend of Nasr’s sent
her “Te Llamo,” Pérez’s Spanish
version of “Ounadikum” (I Call
To You) by Lebanese songwriter
Ahmad Kaboor. A song about
survival and resilience, the song
repeatedly provided Nasr with
a musical haven against the
sound of shelling in the streets
that night. The song had trav­
eled the world, returning when
most needed.
After a year of exchanging let­
ters and ideas across the sea, the
two singer-songwriters met for
the first time in New York and
recorded Pérez’s song “Cami­
naré” (I Will Walk) as a duet
which appeared in Nasr’s debut
CD, “Lil Ghaly.” They met again
in May 2009, in San Antonio,
this time presenting a complete
body of work in Spanish and
Arabic together.
Two years later they per­
formed to a passionate audience
at Gibralfáro Castle in Málaga,
Spain overlooking the Mediter­
ranean sea of Andalucia. And
the song that originally brought
them together, continues to
work its magic as Kaabour, the
song’s beloved, elder songwriter
joined them in the studio record­
ing for “Written in Water.”
Tickets will be $10 pre-sale
and $15 at the door with presale ending May 13 at 6 p.m.

Born into improvisational,
musical traditions of Moca,
Puerto Rico, musician, poet
and composer Pérez is noted
for combining both power
and fragility within the same,
rich contralto voice. She has
performed internationally for
over 20 years, from performing
arts centers to areas of conflict,
paying soulful tribute to the pas­
sion and hope at the common
heart of human struggle. Pérez
has released eight albums, com­
posed scores for theater, dance
and film.
Based in Beirut, “the great
voice from Lebanon” Nasr has
inspired a world-wide following
with her plaintive voice and
acoustic guitar. A voice for free­
dom, justice, equality, humanity
and love, Nasr often focuses
on the beauty of the Lebanese
people in her music, using songs
of peace, love and resilience to
inspire positive change.

Top nurses recognized for National Nurses Week
Special to La Prensa
In celebration of National
Nurses Week, CHRISTUS Santa
Rosa Health System (CSRHS)
recently honored five outstand­
ing nurses on for the incredible
work they do with patients and
families.
The Special Honor for Individ­
ual Nursing Excellence (SHINE)
Award recognizes nurses who ex­
ceed expectations and exemplify
leadership, compassion, clinical
skills and educational standards.
This year’s award winners
are: Stephanie Lerma, BSN,
RNC-NIC; Heather Wiley, BSN,
RN; Apple Santiago, BSN, RNBC; Amanda Dziuk, BSN, RN,
CCRN; and Sandra Pena, BSN,
RN.
Lerma works in the Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit at The Chil­
dren’s Hospital of San Antonio.
She is described by her peers as
“phenomenal,” “respectful,” and
“exceptional” as a leader who
steps up as a charge nurse, trans­
port nurse and ECMO nurse.
Her colleagues say she brings
a calming influence to stressful
situations.
Wiley’s leadership skills make
her the “go to” person for the
Intensive Care Unit at CHRIS­
TUS Santa Rosa Hospital – New
Braunfels, where her empathy
and patient advocacy makes her
an example to other nurses. A
colleague paid Wiley the highest
compliment a nurse can give by
saying, “I can readily say I’d be
happy for her to care for any of
my family.”
Santiago has gained the respect
of nurses, physicians and patients
for her reliability and commu­
nication skills at CHRISTUS
Santa Rosa Hospital – Westover
Hills. This charge nurse leads
by example, and many seek her
judgment and look to her for
recommendations. Santiago is
known for her exceptional patient
care and ever-present smile on the
Hospital’s sixth floor.
Don’t let Dziuk’s age fool you:
although she completed her nurs­
ing residency only three years
ago, she has distinguished herself
as a motivated, caring and com­
passionate care giver in the ICU at
CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital
– Medical Center. Dziuk is part of
a proactive group of young nurse
leaders who are helping create
initiatives to improve patient care
and influence staff engagement.
Pena is a House Supervisor at
CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital
– Alamo Heights who captured
the hearts, minds and media at­
tention of the nation for delivering
life-saving CPR for a dying gentle­
man on board an airplane headed
to San Antonio. Pena readily
steps in where she is needed,
from the ED to the post-op sur­
gical unit, bringing her skills and
compassion to patients.
Each year the SHINE Award
winners are nominated by their
peers and selected by the mem­
bers of the Regional Profes­
sional Development Council.
This distinguished honor will be
memorialized with the SHINE
Award recipient’s name and
photo prominently displayed
on a plaque at their respective
campuses, as well as a celebration
during Nurses’ Week.

cuestiones de hecho en disputa que usted presente durante el período de comentarios. Si la petición la hace un grupo o asociación, uno o más miembros que tienen

Toros, dirigidos por el entre­

desde el primer silbatazo se
dieron a la tarea de llegar a
la portería resguardada por el
arquero novato Matt Cardone,
nativo de San Antonio, quien se
vio bastante ocupado atajando
sorpresivos disparos.
La ofensiva de Toros superó a
la defensiva de SAFC, marcan­
do el primer tanto en el minuto
69 en los botines del delantero

personas adultas con daños severos
Estudio sobre administración de ácido tranexámico durante
el transporte médico por aire antes de llegar al hospital
(Prueba STAAMP, por sus siglas en inglés).
University Hospital, AirLIFE y UT Health Science Center San Antonio llevarán a cabo
un estudio clínico de investigación en el sur de Tejas, para poner a prueba el uso del
medicamento ácido tranexámico (TXA) en pacientes de trauma adultos que se encuentren
en estado de shock. Estamos llevando a cabo este estudio para ver si el administrar TXA
en la fase temprana después de sufrir un daño una lesión ayuda a reducir el índice de
muertes en pacientes con daños severos que muestren signos o síntomas de sangrado
significativo, antes de llegar al centro de traumatología. Esta medicina ha sido aprobada
para sangrado en otros tipos de condiciones, pero aún no ha sido aprobada para trauma.
Ciertos tipos de pacientes, daños o herida serán excluidos. Este estudio puede incluir
pacientes incapacitados para dar su consentimiento a participar.
