Nonprofits rally together for The Big Give S.A.

More than 400 participants
flooded the steps of City Hall
Tuesday morning for a pep rally
to raise awareness for this year’s
The Big Give S.A. campaign.
The campaign, taking place
on May 3, is day for residents to
donate to nonprofit organizations
across South Texas to contribute
to their favorite charity. San Antonio is one of the 50 communities across the country that will
participate in the annual event and
hopes to raise a record $6 million
in just 24 hours.
The purpose of the communitywide giving day is to increase
awareness of the impact local
nonprofits make in addressing our
community’s social challenges,
bring nonprofits and donors together, embrace the movement of
online giving and connect people
to the causes that they care about.
The Big Give S.A. is part of the
national day of giving called
“Give Local America.”
At hand to begin the rally was
Mayor Ivy Taylor, Bexar County
Judge Nelson W. Wolff, State
Rep. Diego Bernal (D-San Antonio), District 2 Councilman Alan
Warrick, District 5 Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales, Executive
Director of the Nonprofit Council
Scott McAninch and Santikos
Enterprises CEO David Holmes.
“Events like this build up the
community, encourages participation, donations at all levels and increases visibility of the nonprofit
sector. It is fun to be here with all
of these folks who are doing great
things,” said Mayor Taylor. “In a
time where we see an overwhelming partisanship, it is great for us
all to come together to show that
we are truly one San Antonio. We
also have representation of people
from different backgrounds work-
ing with different organizations
that are committed to moving our
region forward towards a positive
direction.”
Coming from a nonprofit background that includes the San Antonio Zoo, Mayor Taylor wants
to participate in the event and
announced to give away $1,000
to the San Antonio nonprofit
with the largest number of unique
donors on May 3. This year, 788
San Antonio-based agencies,
including The Children’s Shelter, City Year San Antonio and
Hispanic Association of Colleges
and Universities (HACU), will
participate.

HACU, an organization that
champions Hispanics students’
success in higher education, promotes the development of members in colleges and universities,
improves access to quality postsecondary education for Hispanic
students and shares resources.

El vienes 23 de abril la ciudad
de San Antonio puso en suspenso
toda su febril actividad para disfrutar el esperado desfile “Battle
of Flowers Parade” en su 125
aniversario.
Participaron en el desfile 218
unidades entre grupos de danza,
bandas escolares, academias de
baile folklórico y, desde luego,
una flota de carrozas alegóricas
de reinas y princesas de diversas
organizaciones.
“Battle of The Flowers” es en el
país el único desfile producido por
mujeres –todas voluntarias- afilia­
das a Battle of Flowers Parade
Association con una tradición que
empezó en 1891 y que en la actua­
lidad además incluye cada año un
concurso de bandas escolares y
certamen de oratoria.
Se estima que más de doscientas
mil almas se apostan a lo largo de
la interminable caravana de carros
alegóricos en una ruta de dos mi­
llas de este evento, que es una de
las joyas de Fiesta San Antonio.
En esta ocasión el título de
Grand Marshal correspondió a
Rosemary Kowalsky, apreciada
personalidad en la industria alimenticia y que goza de un alta
estima por su activa participación
en proyectos de beneficio a la
comunidad.
El puesto de Honorary Gran
Marshal fue conferido a Angela
Salinas, Mayor General (retirada)
de U.S. Marine Corps y actual
presidente de Girls Scouts of
Southwest Texas. Por su distin-
guido servicio militar ella recibió
varias condecoraciones como:
NAVY Distinguished Service
Medal, Defense Superior Service
Medal, The Legion of Merit, entre
otras.

VIA to offer free
rides on Election Day

VIA Metropolitan Transit reminds the community to ride VIA to
vote on Election Day on Saturday,
May 7.
Complimentary rides are offered
throughout the VIA service area.
The “Ride VIA to Vote” initiative
was unveiled on March 1, 2016 to
offer free public transportation on
municipal, state and federal election days.
“Civic involvement is one of our
most essential rights and responsibilities. We at VIA are proud to
provide the communities we serve
vital connections and access to
opportunity. By offering complimentary rides on Election Day, we
are highlighting the important role
public transportation can play in
helping people engage in the process and have their voices heard,”
said VIA President/CEO Jeffrey
C. Arndt.
The “Ride VIA to Vote” initiative provides complimentary public
transportation throughout the VIA
service area for customers presenting a valid voter registration card to
the bus or van operator when boarding on Election Day. This includes
regular bus service and VIAtrans
paratransit service. Registered
VIAtrans customers should schedule their trip in accordance with
VIAtrans policies and procedures.

Mayor and local leaders join forces to fight Zika virus

Local government and health officials gathered on the steps of City
Hall Monday morning to announce
their plan to fight the Zika virus
should the disease begin spreading
in Bexar County.
“We’ve had four individuals
test positive for the Zika virus,
but all four of them acquired the
virus while traveling abroad,” said
Mayor Ivy Taylor. “At this time,
there is no local transmission of
Zika in our city, which means
that mosquitos in our area are not
infected with Zika. All the partners
here today are coordinating efforts
to ensure the safety of our entire
community…prevention is key.”
With the recent rainfall and the
summer season approaching, local leaders and health officials are
worried about the mosquito population increasing in our area. With
no treatment of vaccine available,
they are asking the community to
prepare and do their part to stop any
possible transmission.
“We want the residents to dump
any standing water near their homes
at least once a week, treat standing
water that can’t be dumped with
purification tablets, make sure
family members are wearing protective clothing and treat bare skin
with insect repellent when they’re
outside,” said Bexar County Judge
Nelson Wolff.
Community awareness is crucial
in helping reduce the mosquito
population locally. The mosquito
that could transmit Zika, Chikungnuya or Dengue, known as Aedes
aegypti is known as a “containerbreeding mosquito” because it likes
to lay eggs in water that collects
or is stored in manmade contain-
ers, such as tires, rain gutters,
bird baths, plant pots, pet bowls,
neglected swimming pools and
uncovered boats.
According to the San Antonio
Metropolitan Health District (Metro Health), eggs stick to containers
like glue and remain attached until
they are scrubbed off. The eggs
can survive when they dry out—up
to eight months. When it rains or
water covers the eggs, they hatch
and become adults in about a week.
These mosquitoes are also aggressive daytime biters.
For people who get sick, the
illness is usually mild. For this
reason, many people might not realize they have been infected. The
common symptoms include fever,
rash, joint pain or conjunctivitis
(red eyes). The symptoms typically
begin two to seven days after being
bitten by an infected mosquito.
Since all four cases of Zika in
Bexar County were confirmed to
be acquired while traveling abroad,
it is recommended to delay travel
to Zika-affected areas, especially
pregnant women.
The virus can be transmitted
from a pregnant mother to her baby
during pregnancy or around the
time of birth. If travel is unavoidable, they should take extra precautions to prevent mosquito bites. In
rare cases, it can be transmitted
through sexual activity or blood
transfusion.
Mayor Ivy Taylor, along with local leaders and health officials,
gathered at City Hall on Monday to urge residents to take their own
precautions and reduce mosquito population locally.

En cuartos de final, los Spurs
se enfrentaron al cuadro de los
Grizzlies de Memphis que, bajo la
batuta del entrenador en jefe David
Joerger con números de 42 triunfos
por 40 derrotas, se clasificaron en el
séptimo escaño en el oeste.
Memphis se vio corto en su
ali­neación estelar con la ausencia
sobre la duela del poste español
Marc Gasol, quien en su octava
temporada en la NBA (al cierre de
la misma), estuvo en recuperación
de fractura de su pie derecho
Por igual, el guardia Mike Conley, quien cumplió nueve años
jugando en la NBA, no vio acción
durante el mismo lapso de Gasol
por estarse recuperando del talón
de Aquiles (pie izquierdo).
Gasol en la temporada dejó
marca de 16.6 puntos encestados
por partido; mientras que Conley
se quedaba con récord de 15.3 unidades encestadas por cotejo.
Sin embargo, el timonel Joerger
logró la hazaña de ubicar a Grizz­
lies en el séptimo lugar, por arriba
del trabuco Rockets de Houston,
a quienes les tocó el “honor” de
eliminarse contra el campeón Wa­
rriors de Golden State.
Spurs, por ser los sublíderes del
oeste, se ganaron el derecho de
abrir la serie cuartos de final en
calidad de local, ganando los dos
primeros partidos con marcadores
de 106-74 y 94-68. Posteriormente,
se adjudicaron otras dos victorias
consecutivas en la madriguera de
Grizzlies, el FedEx Forum de la
ciudad de Memphis, Tennessee.
San Antonio en el tercer partido,
jugando a medio ritmo, ganó 96-87.
Y en el cuarto combate volvieron a
imponerse con arrollador puntaje
116-95.
El alero angelino Kawhi Leonard,
durante los cuatro partidos, impuso
su ley sobre la duela haciéndole
honor a su segunda elección como
el Jugador Defensivo del Año 2016
(2015-16 Kia NBA Defensive
Player of the Year).
En el primer partido, Leonard
encestó 20 puntos.
En la segunda contienda por limitación de minutos de juego encestó
13 unidades.
En el tercer partido logró anotar
32 puntos, con 2 asistencias, 4 robos
y 5 bloqueos, imponiendo por pri­
mera vez marca personal con más
puntos anotados en serie de playoff.
En el cuarto partido Leonard
anotó 21 puntos, lo que reflejó
marca personal con la que cerró la
temporada oficial en la que registró
21 unidades por partido, superando
marca de la temporada 2014-15 que
fue de 16.5 puntos por partido.
“Kawhi Leonard es un jugador
natural. En cada partido se le nota
su calidad de gran basquetbolista.
Leonard seguirá adelante superando
su estilo de juego, es joven y lo tiene
todo”, dijo el timonel Joerger.
Cabe anotar que Popovich en el
cuarto partido no se dejó llevar por
el canto de la sirena, ya que estando
en calidad de visitante decidió no
darle oportunidades al anfitrión enviando a su quinteta titular al ataque.
Al final del partido estos fueron
los números individuales de ambas
quintetas y sus respectivas bancas.
