y unos zapatos muy cómodos
para estar en primera fila y no
perderse el gran desfile de la
Celebración del 16 de Septiem
bre este próximo sábado 15.
La Celebración del 16 de
Septiembre –que se lleva a cabo
un día antes– es la ocasión más
especial del año para compartir
con la comunidad mexicana de
San Antonio, pues se celebra un
año más de La Independencia de
México.
Y el desfile, que es uno de sus
más grandes atractivos, iniciará
a las 10:00 a.m. en Avenida Gua
dalupe, tendrá una duración de
dos horas a través de dicha calle.
La Asociación Avenida Gua
dalupe detalló que, para como
didad de los espectadores, se
colocarán sillas para disfrutar el
desfile. Pero el público también
tiene la opción de llevar su pro
pia silla.
Entre las personalidades par
ticipantes destaca la periodis
ta de origen mexicano, María
Antonieta Collins (Univisión),
como Gran Mariscal del desfile.
Collins comenzó su carrera de
periodista en su nativo México.
Con su trabajo y esfuerzo logró
forjar una gran carrera que la
trajo a los Estados Unidos y a
las cadenas de Univisión y Tele
mundo.
Además de ejercer el perio
dismo, la conocida reportera
también ha tenido tiempo para
criar una familia y escribir varios
libros en los que comparte su
vida profesional y familiar.

This Thursday, September 13,
a job fair will be held for military
veterans and their spouses hosted
by RecruitMilitary and The U.S
Chamber of Commerce National
Chamber Foundation. The event will
take place at the AT&T Center from
11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Over 60 exhibitors will participate
in the fair and this is perfect timing
considering the recent unemploy
ment rates for veterans.
The unemployment rate for Iraqand Afghanistan-era veterans fell to
9.5 percent, down from 12.7 percent
in June 2012 and from 13.3 percent
in June 2011, according to the em
ployment situation report released
in July by the Labor Department’s
Bureau of Labor Statistics.
As the numbers show, the unem
ployment rate for veterans had been
dropping gradually but spiked in
the latest jobs report, which showed
the unemployment rate for Iraq and
Afghanistan vets at 10.9 percent.
Making the transition from the
military to civilian life is an eyeopening experience explained Rod
Sigler who served in the army.
“In the military it’s kind of a
different world. You know what
you’re wearing every day and the
people you’re going to see. It really
is a routine or regimen,” said Sigler.
“When you get out of the army or
military it’s an eye-opening experi
ence. It’s kind of like a newborn baby
going out into the world or a child
leaving for school,” Sigler added.
“In making the transition the biggest
thing that helped me was knowing I
had some translatable skills.”
Sigler, who is now a market hu
man resource manager for Sam’s
Club, stressed the importance of
knowing those translatable skills.
At times when a veteran approach
es the civilian job market those skills
they learned in the military aren’t
immediately identifiable.
“I don’t think there is enough
value put on the skills learned in the
military. We tend to think this is just
army stuff,” said Sigler.
Companies like Walmart have
been the example and offer veterans
“crossover” sheets to help them iden
tify those skills and how they relate
to the civilian world such as conflict
resolution and leadership skills.
Moreover, in 2011 Walmart dou
bled its commitment to support job
training and education for military
veterans as they enter the workforce
to $20 million over the next five
years.
Walmart is one the nation’s largest
private employers of veterans and
values military experience.

Como ya dio comienzo el
semestre de clases de otoño, el
Guadalupe Cultural Arts Cen
ter (GCAC, por sus siglas en
inglés) también quiere que su
semestre esté lleno de alumnos
con ganas de comenzar algo
creativo.
Por esta razón, GCAC ya dio
comienzo a sus inscripciones
para clases de arte, y quiere que
todos los que deseen aprender
más a fondo sobre su clase fa
vorita o sobre algún tema que
por pena, mala suerte o desidia
no lograron concretar, se ins
criban este semestre.
“Las clases son para todos y
tenemos cursos para principian
tes, intermedios y avanzados.
Contamos con muchas clases
artísticas que educan a la per
sona dependiendo de su nivel”,
explicó Belinda Menchaca,
directora de relaciones públicas
de GCAC.
De acuerdo a Menchaca, las
clases están abiertas para estu
diantes de 4 años en adelante. Clase de danza para niñas en Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center.

El semestre para todas las
clases, con excepción de las de
danza, dará comienzo el lunes
17 de septiembre con distintos
horarios, finalizando los cursos

Las clases de danza ya dieron
comienzo el 4 de septiembre y
finalizarán el 14 de diciembre,
sin embargo hay buenas no
ticias para los interesados en
este curso, ya que pueden ins
cribirse en cualquier momento
del año.
Todas los cursos son en la
Galería Guadalupe, que se
ubica en el 723 de la calle
S. Brazos, en el campus del
GCAC.
Dentro de las clases que
darán comienzo este próximo
lunes se incluyen pintura para
principiantes, acordeón, pia
no, guitarra, cine en el barrio
(filme), teatro para niños, y

Discover hidden treasures of San Antonio

with the San Antonio Conservation Society for an extra- special
seminar and tour called “Roadside
Treasures – Buildings of the Automotive Era.” The deadline is today,

In one afternoon, you’ll learn
where to find San Antonio’s large
pink pig, an amazing Pegasus neon
sign and the first A-frame Whata
burger.
And those are just a few of the
quirky pieces of roadside architec
ture the San Antonio Conservation
Society will highlight and discuss
in its upcoming seminar—with
complete instructions for a 45-min
ute self-guided driving tour that
culminates in a reception at the
Olmos Bharmacy.
The Conservation Society, a non
profit organization, will launch the
“Roadside Treasures – Buildings
of the Automotive Era” tour at 11
a.m. on Saturday, Sept 15 at the El
Tropicano Riverwalk Hotel, 110
Lexington Ave.
From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., guests
will enjoy a box lunch, keynote
and panel discussion with experts
in the field.
The seminar features keynote
speaker Chester Liebs, author of
“Main Street to Miracle Mile:
American Roadside Architecture,”
who will discuss the identification
and protection of these historic
resources in a regional and larger
context.
His expertise is legendary.
Liebs, the founding director of
the Historic Preservation Program
at the University of Vermont and
a past president of the Society for
Industrial Archeology and the So
ciety for Commercial Archeology,
currently teaches the University of
New Mexico’s Graduate Certificate
Program in Historic Preservation
and Regionalism.
Panel discussions also include
representatives of the Texas His
torical Commission and Texas
Department of Transportation
highlighting discovery processes,
preservation successes and historic
gas stations.
At 4:30 p.m.—after the speakers
and panels—participants will hit
the road for a self-guided driving
tour of roadside architecture. A
map and instructions will be avail
able. The tour lasts approximately
45 minutes with a “meet up” after
the tour at Olmos Bharmacy,
Neighborhood Bhar and Rhestau
rant, 3902 McCullough Ave.
“As a regional commercial center
and a historic crossroads of trade,
it is no surprise that roadside archi
tecture blossomed in San Antonio
in the 20th century as the Ameri
can automobile culture became
dominant,” Conservation Society
president Nancy Avellar explained.
“Although many of the tourist
courts, motels, drive-in restaurants
and auto-oriented businesses have
disappeared, San Antonio still
retains a significant collection of
buildings and structures of the
automotive era,” she added.

Alamo Heights in 1934. When Mobil Oil sold the service station in
1985, the Society worked successfully with the oil company and the
new owner to secure the future of the distinctive Pegasus sign. The
1986 agreement reached with Mobil Corporation represented the
first of its kind because it allowed the company’s trademark to be

is the Rolled Tacos from Chico’s
Tacos in El Paso. They’re ba
sically ground beef taquitos,
but for some reason in the El
Paso neighboring New Mexico
area they call them Roll Tacos.
Number three is a Taco Truck
on Santa Ana in Orange County,
California. He had to give love to
the natives, one way or another.
Number four came from the So
narán Dock at El Güero Canelo
in Tucson, Arizona. It’s a bacon
wrapped hot dog, placed inside
a modified bolillo, half bolillo
and half hot dog bun made with
a jalapeño salsa, pinto beans,
ketchup, mustard, mayo and Val
entina’s Hot Sauce. Number five
is the Night Hawk Special that
you find at a restaurant called
El Rancho Grande in Tulsa,
Oklahoma. The Night Hawk
Special is Tex-Mex at its finest.
It’s made up of a cheese taco,
chili con carne, crispy taco, and
enchiladas. It’s good!

El Alcalde de la ciudad, Julián
Castro, junto con su hermano ge
melo, Joaquín, celebraron el pasado
lunes su cumpleaños en Sunset
Station con una gran fiesta abierta
al público, en donde junto con su
familia y miembros de la comuni
dad entonaron “Las mañanitas” dos
veces.
Este fue uno de los eventos de
mayor importancia en la ciudad el
pasado lunes, pues el alcalde y su
hermano han ganado gran populari
dad después de su participación en
la Convención Nacional Demócrata
(DNC, por sus siglas en inglés) la se
mana pasada en Carolina del Norte.
“Fue una gran oportunidad para
mí el haber participado en la conven
ción, y me siento orgulloso de saber
que tanta gente nos apoyó desde
casa”, expresó el alcalde.
Los gemelos celebraron sus 38
años de edad, que precisamente
estarán cumpliendo el próximo
domingo 16 de septiembre; sin em
bargo, decidieron realizar esta gran
fiesta el lunes pasado con el fin de
poder celebrarlo también con la co
munidad de su querido San Antonio.
Más de mil personas celebraron
el cumpleaños degustando nachos,
frijoles, guacamole, carne, agua de
Jamaica y otras bebidas.
“Estamos muy contentos de estar
aquí, en nuestra casa San Antonio.
Estamos felices de poder celebrar
nuestro cumpleaños con toda la
gente de nuestra ciudad que tanto
queremos y por la que tanto hemos
luchado”, afirmó Julián Castro.
“Ahora que estuvimos fuera, en la
convención, nos dimos cuenta de
que definitivamente San Antonio es
la mejor ciudad”.
Al dar comienzo, los hermanos
Castro se dirigieron al restaurante
Ruth’s Chris Steak House, en donde
Joaquín Castro, quien corre para con
gresista del distrito 20 de los Estados
Unidos, realizó su recaudación de
fondos más grande, la cual se cerró
al final de la gran fiesta con 250
personas dejando más de $50,000
en contribuciones.
Mientras tanto, la gente esperaba
en el elegante y decorado salón de
Sunset Station escuchando a la banda
de música.
La presentadora de los gemelos
Castro fue la senadora Leticia Van de
Putte, quien introdujo el momento de
la llegada de los hermanos.
“Los hermanos Castro fueron
excelentes estudiantes, pero también
puedo decirles que fueron mitote
ros”, dijo la senadora mientras el
público reía. “Sobrepasaron límites,
comenzando en la escuela Thomas
Jefferson High School, dirigiéndose
a Stanford, después Harvard y final
mente regresaron a San Antonio, su
ciudad”, añadió.
Al entrar al escenario, los gemelos
Castro dieron la bienvenida a las más
de mil personas que asistieron a su
fiesta, y hablaron sobre lo felices
que estaban de estar de vuelta en
San Antonio.
El alcalde Julián Castro se encargó
de presentar a su hermano, Joaquín,
pues aunque no se requiere una in
troducción porque ahora es muy bien
conocido en todo el país, asegura que
tan solo en San Antonio los confun
den entre cinco y diez veces al día.
“Ahora que estuvimos en la
convención, me confundían con mi
hermano Julián como 200 veces al
día”, dijo Joaquín entre risas.
El alcalde contó al público sobre
su estancia de una semana en Caro
lina del Norte durante la jornada de
la DNC, y aseguró que fue muy
significativo el saber que tanta gente
lo estuvo apoyando desde San An
tonio hasta con pancartas y buenos
mensajes.
“Estoy seguro que podemos lograr
que San Antonio sea la mejor ciudad
de los Estados Unidos si continu
amos luchando por eso”, afirmó.
Durante su mensaje, el alcalde
también mencionó que él y su her
mano ya se están poniendo viejos.
“Nos estamos poniendo viejos,
ya se nota más la caída del cabello y
las canas”, dijo entre risas el alcalde.
“Pero mi hermano sigue siendo más
guapo que yo”, agregó.
Finalmente, el Julián Castro pidió
dos favores al público. Primero que
apoyaran con su voto para elegir a
su hermano Joaquín para próximo
representante del Distrito 20 de los
Estados Unidos.
Como segundo favor pidió a los
invitados que se aseguraran de votar
el 6 de noviembre por su propuesta
de pre-K for San Antonio, para que
la educación comience a temprana
edad.

mis queridos tejanos”.
En cuanto a su carrera política se
ha mencionado que el alcalde tiene
la mira en la presidencia del país, sin
embargo asegura que no es su plan
y que desea continuar realizando su
trabajo como alcalde de la ciudad
del Álamo.
“El cielo es el límite. No sé qué
pueda pasar el día de mañana, así que
por ahora me quiero enfocar solo en
San Antonio y en hacer mi trabajo”,
concluyó el alcalde.

Latinos more likely to get Type 2 diabetes

A new study released earlier
this week by Cedar-Sinai’s Heart
Institute in California shows La
tinos are more likely to store fat
in the pancreas and are less able
to compensate by excreting ad
ditional insulin.
The article, published online
by “Diabetes Care,” describes the
research which examined black,
Latino and white overweight, prediabetic patients. The goal was
to identify biological measures
that could help predict which
patients are likely to develop type
2 diabetes.
According to the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention,
diabetes affects 25.8 million
people in the United States and
about 79 million Americans are
pre-diabetic. Diabetes is the sev
enth leading cause of death in the
United States and a major cause of
heart disease and stroke.
“Prevention of diabetes is our
goal,” Cedars-Sinai Diabetes and
Obesity Research Institute Direc
tor Richard Bergman, PhD, said.
“Not all people who are over
weight or obese and who have
insulin resistance go on to develop
diabetes. If we can determine who
is most likely to develop diabetes
and why, then we can make strides
toward preventing it in those in
dividuals,” Bergman, who is also
a lead author on the study, added.
The study compares white,
black and Latino participants,
similarly overweight and with
many of the same pre-diabetic
symptoms.
Curtis Triplitt, Pharm.D., Asst.
Prof. at the University of Tex
as Health Sciences Center and
clinical researcher at the Texas
Diabetes Institute, explained the
new study is interesting and em
phasized that obesity is a large
problem in our society. Chronic
obesity is a major risk factor for
diabetes.
The study found that Latinos
stored fat in their pancreas, which
was less able to produce adequate
amounts of insulin as compared
with white and black study partic
ipants. This may be why Latinos
are at increased risk of developing
type 2 diabetes.
In chronic obesity, the adipose
tissue designed to store fat begins
to malfunction, allowing fat to
spill into the pancreas, liver and
skeletal muscle. Some individuals
may be insulin-resistant through
out their lives but never develop
diabetes because their pancreas
compensate by secreting more
insulin. In others, the pancreas
cannot compensate, placing these
individuals at greater risk of type
2 diabetes.
Insulin is a hormone made in
the pancreas that helps regulate
metabolism.
“One of the reasons some peo
ple are at increased risk, we
believe, is that fatty pancreas is
unable to secrete enough insulin,
which results in an individual
progressing from impaired glu
cose tolerance to type 2 diabetes,”
Lidia Szczepaniak, PhD, director
of magnetic resonance spectros
copy at the Cedars-Sinai Heart
Institute, said.
“In our study, we found Latinos
were especially vulnerable, as
they tended to store more fat in
the pancreas and their compensa
tory insulin secretion was entirely
suppressed,” she explained.
But Triplitt cautioned that while
it is true that Latinos tend to store
fat in inappropriate places, a
fatty pancreas does not necessarily
equal diabetes.
“The study is saying that many
people have this dysfunction who
don’t develop diabetes and that
more fat in the pancreas creates a
higher risk of beta cell malfunc
tion –and it is an indication of
higher risk. But the fact is that it is
just one factor. The fatty pancreas
does not cause the diabetes but is
a risk factor or a marker that you
could be next,” Triplitt explained.
A noninvasive medical imaging
technique, known as magnetic
resonance spectroscopy, was used
in the study to measure the amount
of fat in organs.
Hispanic, black and white adults
completed three research visits,
including an oral glucose toler
ance test; a frequently sampled
intravenous glucose tolerance test
to evaluate beta-cell function and
insulin resistance; and magnetic
resonance spectroscopy to evalu
ate fat levels in the pancreas and
liver.
The study was funded by grants
from the National Institute of
Health and the Lincy Foundation.

Sul Ross community gathers
for health fair and resources

Keeping the tradition alive,
last Saturday, Sul Ross Middle
School hosted its annual Health
and Community Resource Fair,
which provided numerous servic
es free of charge to its students,
their families and neighbors.
The initiative began over a
decade ago and for the last eight
years it’s been held in conjunc
tion with State District 125, Sen
ate District 26 and City Council
District 7. This year Gregorio
Esparza Elementary and Jim G.
Martin Elementary, the two el
ementary schools that feed 100%
into Sul Ross, joined the effort
for the first time.
“We organize this to bring a
health fair to the heart of the
community and also to highlight
the resources that are avail
able. As a city and as a state we
need to work on combating the
medical ailments that trouble our
city,” said State Representative
Joaquin Castro, referring to San
Antonio’s high rate of diabetes,
hypertension and heart disease.
To help address such ailments,
numerous agencies were avail
able to provide vision, dental,
glucose, blood pressure and
cholesterol checks. In addition
to the free health screenings, at
tendees also had the opportunity
to acquire information regard
ing transportation, home loans,
veteran services, low cost health
insurance plans, nutrition tips
and job opportunities.
For those constituents that had
concerns, the area’s representa
tives were available to answer
questions. State Rep. Castro,

said Van de Putte. “This is a way

y si su hijo se está preparando
para los exámenes de SAT o
simplemente necesita ayuda con
las matemáticas o la ciencia, un
servicio de tutoría puede ser una
herramienta valiosa.
Para asegurarse de obtener el
máximo provecho de su dinero,
el Better Business Bureau (BBB)
tiene algunos consejos para encon
trar el servicio adecuado para las
necesidades de su hijo.
A nivel nacional, BBB recibió
cerca de 300 quejas contra los
servicios de tutoría en los últimos
12 meses.
La mayoría de los padres alega
ban que no estaban satisfechos con
los servicios ofrecidos. Además
ellos sintieron que sus hijos no me
joraron con el programa de tutoría.
Otros consumidores alegaron
que los servicios de tutoría con
tinuaron facturando después de
terminado el programa.
Hay muchos tipos diferentes de
servicios de tutoría académica,
pero son los más comunes son los
tutores de estudiantes, centros de
estudios comerciales y servicios
de tutoría en línea.
Cada tutoría tiene su propio
rango de tasa asociada a ella.
Con esto dicho, recuerde que
debe hacer su propia investigación
de cada tutor que usted está con
siderando. Solicite cotizaciones de
tres o más servicios y compruebe
con la escuela para ver lo que ya
está disponible para su estudiante.
También puede preguntar si hay
menores tasas para las familias que
califiquen.
Es muy importante que esté
preparado para pedir referencias.

Universitarios serán mentores del Team Up Challenge Scholars Program

Cuarenta universitarios que
cursan estudios superiores en
St. Mary’s University, Trinity
University, Our Lady of the Lake
University, UTSA e Incarnate
Word University han sido invitados
para que funjan como mentores en
equipos de preparatoria que estarán
participando en los programas de
beneficio comunitario durante el
periodo 2012-2013 del TEAM Up
Challenge.
Este torneo se denominará
“Team Up Challenge Scholars
Program” y contará con el apoyo
de la empresa telefónica AT&T.
Los equipos de jóvenes de pre
paratoria serán integrados por estu
diantes del 12º grado, quienes ex
pondrán cada uno sus proyectos y
gestiones que resulten en beneficio
de sus respectivas comunidades.
“La expansión de la iniciativa en
programas del Team Up Challenge
proveerá más herramientas entre el
estudiantado participantes, ya que
la creación del Scholars Program
será un valioso recurso que ayude
en el planeamiento y ejecución
de cada proyecto a realizarse”,
explica un reporte informativo de
la organización filantrópica Silver
& Black Give Back.
Esta organización depende de la
empresa deportiva Spurs Sports &
Entertainment (SS&E), propietaria

Aplicarán sus conocimientos en
las artes, cultura, educación, medio
ambiente, salud y bienestar, así
como en el sector uniformado.
Durante el año escolar, los
grupos semifinalistas recibirán
cantidades por $2,500 con lo que
costearán gastos de operación,
para el mes de abril los cinco
equipos que sean seleccionados
como campeones recibirán cada
uno la suma de $20,000, para que
continúen con sus programas de
beneficio en sus comunidades. Re

Tony Parker, quien acudió a la
Highlands High School para darle
su apoyo al programa “Voices for
Animals”, el cual rescata animales
callejeros que son turnados a agru
paciones protectoras de animales,
donde son alimentados y educados,
para posteriormente ponerlos en
adopción.
Al respecto, Parker comentó
que “es bueno que estudiantes
se preocupen por mantener con
trol de animales callejeros, ellos
siguen buscando darle solución al
problema. Ser dueño de animales
implica gran responsabilidad, por
lo que felicito a estudiantes que se
toman tiempo para colaborar en la
protección de animales sin dueño”.

Two special screenings for P.A.D. to be held this month

In the United States, approxi
mately 8 to 12 million Ameri
cans suffer from peripheral arte
rial disease (P.A.D) -hardening
of the arteries (also known as
“artherosclerosis”) in the limbs,
often the legs. According to the
National Heart, Lung and Blood
Institute, one in every 20 Ameri
cans over the age of 50 has PAD.
Many of those with PAD do not
experience any symptoms. PAD
can reduce mobility, and is asso
ciated with an increased risk of
heart attack and stroke. It can be
fatal if left untreated. September
is Peripheral Arterial Disease
(P.A.D.) Awareness Month, an
annual initiative to encourage
Americans to learn more about
P.A.D.
Peripheral artery disease oc
curs when arteries in the legs
become narrowed or clogged
with fatty deposits, reducing
blood flow to the legs. This can
result in leg muscle pain when
walking, disability, amputation,
and poor quality of life. Blocked
arteries found in people with
PAD can be a red flag that other
arteries, including those in the
heart and brain, may also be
blocked – increasing the risk of
a heart attack or stroke. Diabet
ics are at an increased risk of
having PAD.
While everyone over the age
of 50 is at risk for PAD, the risk
increases if a person:
• Smokes, or used to smoke
• Has diabetes
• Has high blood pressure
• Has abnormal blood cho
lesterol
• Has a personal history of
coronary artery disease or stroke
Peripheral arterial disease can
also be a silent killer. This is
because the disease can often go
undiagnosed and show no rec
ognizable symptoms. However,
some people with PAD may have
one or more symptoms such as
fatigue, heaviness, tiredness or
cramping in the leg muscles
(calf, thigh or buttocks) that
occurs during activity such as
walking and goes away with rest;
foot or toe pain at rest that often
disturbs sleep; skin wounds or
ulcers on the feet or toes that
are slow to heal. These wounds
can increase the risk for infec
tion which can lead to amputa
tion. There are many sobering
statistics about limb loss; most
important is the increase mor
tality rates after an amputation
surgery. Diabetes is the number
one cause of amputations in
the US today (54% diabetes,
45% trauma, and less than 2%
cancer). If you have diabetes,
you should always take off your
shoes and socks when you see
your doctor and ask your doctor
to do a vascular test to check the
pulses in your feet.
Peripheral artery disease
(PAD) is a chronic progressive
disease, which means it gets
worse over time. Depending
on the stage when diagnosed,
PAD can be treated to reduce
your chances of losing a limb to
amputation. Here are the most
common treatments for PAD.
1. Stop smoking
2. Better diet and nutrition
3. Effective management of
diabetes, hypertension and high
cholesterol
4. Work with your primary
care doctor to establish a pre
scription intervention plan with
aspirin or anti-cholesterol medi
cations
5. A regimented exercise pro
gram
6. Minimally invasive surgical
intervention (balloon angio
plasty/stents if needed)
7. Open surgical intervention
(bypass)
Vascular surgeons are the only
specialist extensively trained to
provide all of treatment options
included in this list. Surgery
should be the last option for the
treatment of PAD, but if needed,
it’s important to go to an expert
who is skilled in treating even
the most severe cases of this dis
ease. Peripheral Vascular Asso
ciates is one of the largest single
specialty vascular groups in the

what stage of vascular disease
a person may have, PVA can
help. PVA provides diagnostic
ultrasound testing, medical man
agement, minimally invasive
balloon including angioplasty,
athrectomy, stents, traditional
surgery and prosthetic care.
PVA offers PAD screening
tests for people over the age of
50 with any of the risk factors
mentioned above. The screening
test for PAD is called the anklebrachial index (ABI), a painless,
non-invasive test that compares
the blood pressure in the ankles
with the blood pressure in the

ment of PAD can improve the
quality of your life; help you
keep your independence and
mobility; and reduce your risk
of heart attack, stroke, leg am

Antonio, the risks of developing
PAD are higher due to the high
incidence of people with diabe
tes, smoking, and obesity.
