ctober is here with cooler weather drifting in and summer tourist drifting out. Everywhere you go, you hear the fall
tourist talking about how nice it is to hit the beach in the fall. They say things like, “Oh, I just love to come in the fall, the
traffic and the beach is not as congested, the beach is warm enough still to swim, and usually much nicer weather. “
Nature is celebrating fall as well as the pine trees are beginning to shed their needles and foliage is slightly beginning to
turn. Growing up in the country, I always think about what the garden is giving away at this time. Moe’s BBQ , located in
Orange Beach, is selling their famous “turnip greens” cooked with their secret recipe, and if you haven’t tasted them yet,
you don’t know what your missing. Local shops like Janna’s focus on
fresh produce and great meals to celebrate the fall season. Now, let’s
focus on our community , and see what’s happening in the beautiful
community of Orange Beach and the surrounding Gulf Coast area. The
37th Annual Shrimp Festival is around the corner beginning October 9
through 12, and guaranteed to be a weekend of great art and food. Fun
for the whole family no doubt, and will pull in thousands of tourist in this area. A great way to
taste the native foods in our area as each vendor tries to top the next. Nothing like walking
between the booths with the aroma of seafood, funnel cakes, fresh vegetables drifting in the
air. While your taste buds are excited to the max, an opportunity to purchase any type of art
from all over the globe will be available. Wear something comfortable and casual, with your

flipflops and sunvisors, the background setting will be the beautiful Gulf of Mexico with the
salty breezes blowing. October 9-12th has been proclaimed the National Shrimp Festival Week by Alabama Governer Bob Riley, Orange

nother great adventure cropping up is the “ Haunted Hayride”, which is a hayride
through the trail located in Orange Beach. According to Nicole Woerner, “The 2008
Haunted Hayride is a family friendly event that takes travelers through the Hugh S.
Branyon Backcountry Trail in Orange Beach, Alabama. The trail "after dark" is a
frightening experience for the whole family as Halloween skits dot the landscape on a ride
into the darkness of the deep woods. The "Legend of Catman" continues to live on as
sightings of this creature and reports flow in during the fall season. Take your chances
and get involved in this unique event.” Parents with small children should be advised that
the trip lasts about 45 minutes and ventures into the shadows of the Backcountry Trail.
Flashlights are encouraged. This year's hayride will be one night only on October
25th from 7:30pm until 11:00pm. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children under

Moonlight Trail Shot - Perfect place for a Haunted Hayride!
he Orange Beach Public Library is sporting some new hours for the convenience of the residents according to Bonnie Lee,
Library Director. Monday, Tuesday and Friday the hours are 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. ; Wednesday and Thursday the hours are 9:00
a.m. to 8:00 p.m.; Saturday the hours are 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Everyone in the community should be able to access the library during
these hours. Other happenings are “” Celebrate Teen Read Week” with the Orange Beach Public Library and sink your teeth into some
books that bite back! Teen Read Week 2008 will be celebrated in more than 4,000 libraries across the U.S. on Oct. 12-18.The theme
for this year is “Books with Bite @ your Library, and teens are encouraged to read books and graphics novels on a variety of subjects,
including vampires, animals and technology. Teen Read Week will culminate with a program presented by Young Adult Librarian
Jennifer Thompson on October 21, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. that will include young adult literature,
laughs and snacks. Be sure to stop by during Teen Read Week and check out the Books with

In addition, Friday, October 17th, the Library will host “Meet the Authors Wine and Cheese Event”

uthors Dr. James E. Crowder and Dr. Gaylon McCollough are the featured authors for the Friends of
the Orange Beach Library 2008 Meet the Authors Wine and Cheese Event. This event will be held
on Friday, October 17, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at the Orange Beach Welcome Center. Tickets are $15 per
person and are available from any Friends member or at the Orange Beach Public Library. Dr. James E.
Crowder, Ph.D., is the author of A Time in the Sun, a book featuring a fictional Gulf Shores flight instructor
who is coming apart because of unresolved conflicts and tragedies in his life. Dr. Crowder is a clinical
psychologist, pilot and a uthor from Florence, Alabama who has written books on gambling, transference
and parenting. Dr. Gaylon McCollough is the author of Long Shadow of Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant, an up
close and personal look at the patriarch of the Alabama Football Family, his gut-wrenching decision to
relinquish power, the turbulent years he predicted for Alabama football, and his bridge-building plan
designed to create The Crimson Tide’s next “larger than life” coach. Dr. McCollough is also the president
of the McCollough Plastic Surgery Clinic and founder of the McCollough Institute for Appearance and
Dr. Gaylon McCollough
Health in Gulf Shores. Since entering practice, he has obtained international recognition as a surgeon,

Jason Dean, Animal Control Officer
riday, October 3rd, was Jason Dean's, Conservation Officer, last day at the City of Orange
Beach. The duties of the Conservation Officer position will be divided between the Police
Department and Engineering & Environmental Services. All domestic animal issues, e.g.
aggressive and stray dogs, will be handled by the Police Department and calls should be forwarded
to Police Dispatch at 251-981-9777. All wildlife management, nuisance and injury matters will be
handled by E&E and should be forwarded to the Community Development main line. Larry Ellis will
be the main person to handle these calls, however each department will be working as a team to
support this transition period. There will be a period of cross-training that is necessary and it may
take a little time to get the new wildlife position set up. Your patience and understanding during this
period of transition is greatly appreciated. If you have any

he Auburn Volleyball squad was in Orange Beach for pre-season practice August 11-13, 2008.
They worked hard during two a day practice sessions at the Orange Beach Recreation Center
and had a great time while in town. Led by Head Coach Wade Benson and Assistant Coaches
Chris Campbell and April Yantis, the Tigers are set to open the 2008 season August 29-30 as the
team hosts the War Eagle Invitational.

urbside garbage service will remain twice-weekly pickup, using the current containers, and
curbside recycling will take place every other week. Recycling containers will be 95-gallon, rollable
carts (similar to the garbage carts) with color-coded lids for recycling paid for
by Allied Waste. Materials can be co-mingled into the container. Recyclable
materials include newsprint, cardboard, magazine paper, PET (plastic soft
drink and juice bottles) and HPDE (milk jugs, etc.) plastics without caps,
aluminum cans and cleaned steel food cans. The material will be sorted by
the contractor at the sorting facility. The city will also begin its fuel oil recycling
and biodiesel production. Residents and visitors are asked to deposit used
cooking oil at several locations throughout the city using clean one-gallon
bottles provided by the city. The city will also accept used motor oil to be
recycled. Until the locations of the distribution and depository centers are
finalized, the public may pick up and deposit either waste motor or cooking oil
at the City of Orange Beach Public Works Department’s Street Shop facility,
Phillip West, Nicole Woerner, Tim Tucker located on William Silvers Parkway, in Orange Beach. Please call the Public

he Lion's Club is busy getting the rubber ducks ready for the First Annual "Rubber Duck Race"
which will be on October 18 at the Oasis at the Wharf. This serves a great cause, which gives a
$1000 scholarship for a Senior each year, and helps citizens who need eyeglasses a the beginning
point of an eye exam to actually receiving eyeglasses. Can you imagine giving the gift of sight by just
by adopting a rubber duck. You can participate by purchasing rubber ducks, one for $5 or a "six

Orange Beach bid and made a grand slam in 7# trump. Judy has been
playing bridge for 35 years and this was the first time she has ever been in
