The first event was a Health and Wellbeing Day at Trinity Church in Finchley, offering massage, reiki, meditation sessions, health-checks and manicures, plus teas/coffees and lunch, for nearly 30 local carers. “The day was excellent, I left feeling so much better” A Carers Hub Promotional Stand at Brent Cross Shopping Centre in Hendon was held during the week to promote the services available for Barnet carers from the Barnet Carers Hub members. Representatives from Age UK Barnet, Barnet Mencap, Alzheimers Society, and Jewish Care attended alongside the Carers Centre member of staff, and many carers picked up information and chatted with staff. The outing during Carers Week this year was to Kenwood House on Hampstead Heath. The day out, attended by 40 carers, included lunch, a professional guided tour of the House, and transport to and from the Carers Centre. “Excellent day – very well organised. Guide in Kenwood House brilliant and informative”. The Team also ran the “Supporting Barnet Carers” event at St Paul’s church in Finchley. The day was attended by 60 carers, and included talks in relation to the Care Act 2014, and on services available to carers from the local council, the members of the Barnet Carers Hub, and the Barnet Carers Forum. An opportunity to meet fellow carers was available over the lunch provided. “The whole day was so interesting and useful. Thank you!” Dates for the diary... The assessment looks at the ways in which caring affects the individual carer’s life, with their wellbeing - physical, mental and emotional - at the heart of the assessment. The assessment helps highlight the information or advice which might assist the carer, including signposting to other relevant organisations. The council will then use the new national eligibility criteria to decide if the carer is eligible for help from them, which could include support with a break from caring and financial help through a Carers Direct Payment. Information on the assessment (including a link to a Self Assessment Form, eligibility criteria and direct payments) can be found via the following page on the Council’s website: www.barnet.gov.uk/citizen-home/adultsocial-care/carers-in-barnet/assessing-your-needscarers.html If you don’t have access to the internet, you could call Barnet Council’s Social Care Direct service on 020 8359 5000. Alternatively, speak to a member of the Adult Carers team at Barnet Carers Centre, or call the Carers UK Helpline (0808 808 7777) for the eligibility details. The “phase two” provisions under the Care Act, including changes to the means-test for financial support towards social care costs and a cap on the care costs which an individual would be liable for, were due to come into force from April 2016. The government has delayed implementation of phase two until 2020, however, indicating concerns expressed by the Local Government Association and other stakeholders about the timetable for implementation as the reason. A good, simple summary of the Care Act provisions which are already in place, and what is to come, is given on the website of Independent Age (a national organisation for older people) at www.independentage.org/advice/what-does-thecare-act-mean-for-me/ or call its Advice Line on 0800 319 6789. When someone is a carer, keeping well is not just important for the carer’s sake, but also for the sake of the person they care for. That is why unpaid carers are offered a free NHS flu jab if they are the main carer of an older or disabled person whose welfare would be at risk if they were ill. To arrange to have a free NHS flu jab just let your GP practice know that you’d like a flu vaccination because you’re someone’s main carer and/or receive Carers Allowance and that the welfare of the person you care for would be at risk if you were ill. Alternatively, ask your local pharmacy for a free NHS flu jab as many now offer this service and will liaise with your GP practice to let them know that you’ve been vaccinated. If you’re 65 or over, have a long-term condition such as asthma and diabetes or are pregnant, your GP practice will normally invite you to have a flu vaccination as a matter of routine. Even so, it’s still worth letting your GP practice know that you’re a carer. Advocacy in Barnet Advocacy in Barnet offers a free, independent and confidential advocacy service to people aged 50 and over living in Barnet and surrounding boroughs. They can support people with areas such as Independent Living, health and care reviews, obtaining services from both, the health and the local authority, getting the equipment the person needs, and more. The organisation can make calls or write letters on the person’s behalf, attend meetings with the client, and research relevant information for them. Advocacy in Barnet is now delivering a specific advocacy service relating to The Care Act 2014 (the carer as well as the cared-for) to Barnet residents who are 50 years and over. Funded by the London Borough of Barnet, the Specialist Information, Advice and Advocacy Service is a service run by Barnet CAB in partnership with Advocacy in Barnet and Barnet Mind. Manage Smarter, Keep Independent In this age of computers, tablets and smart phones, many people make the most of “apps” in their daily lives. From Carers UK, “Jointly” is one such mobile and online application. Jointly is designed “to make caring a little easier, less stressful and a lot more organised”, combining group messaging with other helpful features, such as to-do lists and notes, medication lists, a calendar and much more. For details of Jointly and other useful equipment and technology suggestions for carers, see www.carersuk.org/help-and-advice/equipment-andtechnology. You may also find it useful to consider other caring-related apps, such as App4Care developed by the social enterprise company Apt Choices (www.app4care.com/). For details of the wide range of other kinds of assistive technology (including basic daily living items) designed to make life easier and increase independence, try the Disabled Living Foundation’s (DLF) helpline (tel: 0300 999 0004, weekdays 10am 4pm). As well as DLF’s main website (www.dlf.org.uk), try its daily living equipment information and advice site www.livingmadeeasy.org.uk/ and its guided advice tool, AskSARA (www.asksara.org.uk). The Bulletin is sent by email to over one thousand local carers, as well as to all Barnet libraries and a number of local voluntary sector organisations. It is available twice a month for those adult carers registered with us who have an email address (with paper copies available at the Carers Centre). If you would like to be put on the mailing list to receive the Bulletin, then please let the Adult Carers Outreach and Support Team have your email address (email [email protected], requesting to be put on the Bulletin list). If you have already given the team your email address but have not received the Bulletin for some reason, then please also email the Team and ask them to double check the email address they have for you. The Thursday Carers Group The Thursday Carers Group (the free information and support group for adult carers held at Barnet Carers Centre from 10.30am to 12.30pm every Thursday) enables local carers to meet with others to share ideas and experiences and chat over tea/coffee and biscuits. On every other Thursday, the session includes a talk or discussion from an external speaker on a specific topic of interest. Talks coming up include services from Age UK Barnet, The Reader Organisation, and the Disability and Health section of the Saracens Sports Foundation. For dates of these and future talks, please contact the Adult Carers Outreach and Support Team. Carers are welcome to drop-in on any Thursday, both for the facilitated sessions and for the general peer support coffee mornings. 7 www.barnetcarers.org Young Adult Carers What’s been happening on the Time 4 Change Project? ‘My Point Of View’ – YAC Profile Free Mental Health Awareness Event – YACs took part in a mental health awareness workshop with Actress Ann Akin who was once a carer for a sibling suffering with mental illness. The YACs were able to gain insight into mental health and took part in some drama exercises. Skills for Finding Employment Workshop – Catch 22 came in to help YACs with skills on how to write a CV, apply for a job and prepare for an interview. This was a great opportunity for young people to work on their current CVs or create their first one. Carers from T4C and BYCAS were invited to the Milly Days day trip again this year. They took part in football, badminton, tennis, swimming and boat trips, and had access to a petting farm, a Jacuzzi and lots of refreshments. This is slowly becoming a yearly event as we’ve been invited to bring the young carers and young adult carers again next year! “How Can Colleges and Universities Better Support Young Adult Carers?” – In July, we joined forces with Enfield Carers Centre to host an event for education providers. We looked at how they can identify, support and engage wide participation for YACs. Speakers at the event included representatives from Carers Trust and the National Union of Students. The feedback from this session was great and we will be planning a follow up session to see what these colleges and universities have done to identify and support YACs. In our last issue, we had an interview with one of the YACs which gave everyone a chance to hear from them what their thoughts were on the project. We thought this would be a good trend to continue and in this issue, we want to feature yet another YAC. Olivia is a university student in her second year of Graphic Design. She cares for her mother who suffers with depression and anxiety. Olivia is also part of the Barnet CCG ‘Re-Imagining Mental Health’ CAMHS & Youth focus group. This is what Olivia had to say about the project: “T4C has played a very important part in my life lately. Since being a part of the project, I have made lots of friends and have been involved in important workshops and events that have helped me as a young adult carer but also helped raise awareness of other young people in a similar situation to myself. Also, because of the support I receive, I was able to take part in an event for graphic designers, which helped put my study and career choices in perspective. I am more at ease now and more confident. This would not have been possible without the Time 4 Change project. Thank you for your support!” Olivia Check out Olivia’s designs depicting a day in her life as a young adult carer. The project is called ‘Mundane’ and you can check it out here at: https://www.behance.net/gallery/27090637/Mundane EVENT DATE TIME LOCATION Training Exchange Session: How Can Health Services Better Support YACs? Routes 2 Education - Event 26th October 2015 10.30am to 1.30pm 11am to 2pm (lunch included) Barnet Carers Centre, Global House, 303 Ballards Lane, N12 8NP Woodhouse College, Woodhouse Rd, Finchley, London N12 9EY 8 www.barnetcarers.org 28th October 2015 For more information on the project, on attending any of the events or on how you can be a part of Time 4 Change, please contact Francesca Lestrade, the T4C Coordinator on 020 8432 2092 or email [email protected] Barnet Young Carers and Siblings (BYCAS) New Project for Isolated Primary Young Carers from Barnet Carers Centre The Carers Centre has just started a new three-year project funded by Children in Need to work with primary young carers who are not accessing relevant services with opportunities. The aim is to increase the young carer’s social and other life-enhancing opportunities, and reduce inappropriate levels of care, in support of their wellbeing and future prospects. The Primary Young Carers Support Worker, Kymberlee Luke will work with the primary young carer and their families, linking with or referring to statutory services and other voluntary sector organisations as appropriate, to help remove the barriers which might be getting in the way of the young carer accessing the services. Activity Day Courtesy of the Scouts Big thanks to the 4th East Barnet Sea Scout Group for running an activity day for Barnet’s young carers. Supported and cheered on by the Scout Group and BYCAS staff, the youngsters took part in activities such as archery, rock climbing, rifle shooting and the assault course. The young carers got stuck into the day with great enthusiasm and had a fantastic time. Thank you 4th East Barnet Sea Scout Group – really appreciated. “Thank you so much for today. I had such a great time” Fun Day at Thorpe Park Funded by Mercers Trust allowed Young Carers a fun filled day out at Thorpe Park. The young carers spent the whole day at the Park, on over 30 rides such as rollercoasters, water rides, attractions and live events and absolutely loved it. The outing gave them a break from their caring role, with the time just to be children and teenagers rather than carers for the day. Our thanks for the day to the Mercers Trust. Tutors to Support Young Carers Required Some young carers can find their school years seriously affected by their caring role. One of the things the Carers Centre does to support these young carers is provide tutoring sessions at the Centre. These sessions are given by volunteer tutors, and although we are currently able to offer a number of sessions in English, Maths and Spanish, we urgently need more tutors in those and other subjects. If you or someone you know has a specialty in an education-related subject, and can offer tutoring support, then we would love to hear from you/them. For further details and an application form please contact our Volunteer Coordinator on 020 8343 9698 or email [email protected] Matilda, Bowling and Inside Out! Thanks to Comic Relief, for funding a theatre trip to see the award-wining musical “Matilda”, at the Cambridge Theatre in London, to a fun night out bowling, and a cinema trip to see Pixar’s “Inside Out”. BYCAS staff reported that everyone had a great time, and that all the outings went really well. The youngsters who saw “Matilda” loved the experience of going to a West End theatre; those who went bowling enjoyed the fun competition and lively atmosphere; and those on a trip to the cinema enjoyed the film and the time together with the other young carers. Many thanks to Comic Relief for all the fun. 9 www.barnetcarers.org Community and Home Support Services (CHSS) CHSS Services Our dedicated team at Barnet Carers Centre will provide you and your family with professional and flexible support which is personalised to individual needs to enable you to be in control of your life and be as independent as possible. We were awarded this to continue our work with Young Adult Carers with a new project. This project will launch in May 2016 and will look at supporting young adult carers aged 16-25. In the weeks before the appeal, Emma Bunton visited the Centre to meet with some of our young carers, parents and staff with the big appeal day taking place on Thursday 8th October. As part of the visit to the Centre, Emma interviewed a couple of Young Adult Carers on the Time 4 Change project to get an understanding of the things they do as carers and the challenges they face. T4C started back in May 2014 and its aim is to support carers aged 14-25, with a focus in the area of future aspirations. The interviews, though emotional, went very well and really showed what it’s like to be a young carer/young adult carer but also how they are supported by the services offered at Barnet Carers Centre. In addition to the interviews, young people were able to come and play music, games and have loads of fun… and we even had one young carer in particular showing us some magic tricks that were pretty amazing! Barnet Carers Centre’s Chief Executive (Christine Makemson) and Time 4 Change Coordinator (Francesca Lestrade) attended the Global Make Some Noise appeal day on 8th October to talk about the charity and what we do to help support carers.
