Poland is one of the few countries in Europe which can be
proud of the reat variety of its landscapes and large areas of
parkland rich with fauna and flora, protected and preserved in
their natural state. The most important environmentally unpolluted regions in Poland are within the boundaries of 23 national
parks which occupy a total surface of 300,000 hectares or one
percent of the entire country. Eight of them, the Babiogórski, Białowieski, Beszczadzki, Kampinoski, Karkonoski,
Poleski, Słowiński and Tatrzański National Parks have been
recorded on the UNESCO list of World Biosphere Reserves
with the Białowieski National Park, in addition, recorded on the
UNESCO list of World Heritage.
In these national parks nature lovers will find extensive marshlands, vast expanses of forests and the shifting sand dunes of
the Baltic coast. They will also encounter the bison Europe’s
largest mammal and with a bit of patience, skill and luck, a
great variety of wild animals in their natural habitat. Poland is
paradise for those who enjoy bird watching as it is home to 80
percent of all European bird species.
Trails and educational paths leading through the parks are an
easy way of getting to know nature first hand and for those who
wish to practice different forms of natural, or green tourism, the
services of professional guides and specialized travel agencies
are available throughout Poland.

Established in 1932, the Białowieski National Park is one of the oldestnature reserves in Europe. It covers the central part
of the Białowieża Forest which is known
worldwide for its vast, virgin forest and the
breeding grounds of the European bison.
Today the largest bison herd to be found
here is made up of over 300 animals. The
park constitutes an area of mixed forests
with an unusual abundance of diverse tree
varieties which grow in their natural state,
untouched by man, with many of the trees
reaching heights seldom seen elsewhere
in Europe. The park’s wildlife is particularly rich: the Białowieża Forest constitutes
the nesting grounds for 120 species of
birds and, in addition to bison, other larger
mammals such as elk, red deer, wolf, lynx,
and beaver are frequently seen here. In
the special exhibition reserve, visitors can
not only come in very close contact with
the bison but also elks, wild boars and
red deer. The most protected part of the
park is a special conservation area with
access to this area only in the company
of a guide. The magnificent Royal Oak
Trail is also worth mentioning, and visiting.
The Bialowieski National Park has been
recorded on the UNESCO list of World
Biosphere Reserves and on the UNESCO
list of World Heritage.

The park boundaries encircle the highest part of the Western Bieszczady
Mountains with its main peak, Mount Tarnica (1,346 meters above sea
level). Woodless, grass-covered ridges, called połoniny, are a distinctive
feature of the mountains in this park. These mountain meadows are filled
with a great number of rare, East Carpathian plants. Forests, mostly beech
with some fir and sycamore stands, cover 87 percent of the park. Bear,
wolf, red deer, bison, lynx to mention only a few mammals, and about 150
species of birds have found a haven here. The park, together with adjoining lands, has been incorporated into the “Eastern Carpathians” international biosphere reserve, which straddles the region of the convergent
borders of Poland, Slovakia, and Ukraine.

The park is located in the Drawska Forest and occupies parts of the Drawa River valley (one of the most
beautiful rivers in Polish Pomerania), the Płociczna
River, the Drawa’s tributary, and thirty lakes. Pine
forests cover 80 percent of the park’s total area, but
there are also forests where pine is mixed with oak,
beech, and alder. Of particular interest are the high
moors in the Płociczna River basin which abound in
rare species of marsh plants and post-glacial plant
life. Various species of fish inhabit the crystal-clear
waters of the park which is also home to beavers,
otters, and the osprey, a rare bird of prey.
Drawieński National Park
The park protects the most important part of the Bory Tucholskie Forest. This
sandy, flat land is overgrown with pinewoods, cut across with river valleys
and dotted with many post-glacial lakes. Peat bogs that are home to certain
rare post-glacial plants can be found in numerous glacial depressions and
at the edges of small forest lakes. The park’s wildlife includes trout in the
crystal-clear waters of the rivers, as well as water fowl, birds of prey, beaver
and elk. The wood grouse is the park’s symbol. Lake Charzykowskie,
adjoining the park, attracts many sailing enthusiasts.

The park comprises the central part of the Gorce
Range in the Western Beskid, with the exception of its
highest peak, Turbacz (1,310 meters above sea level).
This is a typical mountain forest park with rising slopes
of tree stands. The Carpathian beech and fir woods
make up the lower slopes, while the upper slopes of the
mountain are dominated by spruce forest. Both Alpine
and the natural endemic plants cover the numerous
mountain glades. The park’s fauna include typical forest animals such as red deer, roe deer, wild boar, lynx,
wildcat, and wolf. Of special note is the population of
wood grouse and the spotted salamander, which is the
park’s emblem.

The park covers the Góry Stołowe (Table Mountains)
massif located in the central part of the Sudety
Mountain Range. The principal attraction here is
the wild landscape of rocky plateaux with sheer cliff
drops, which have developed as a result of the specific tabular geological structure of these mountains.
Nature has formed labyrinth-like passages among the
rocks. The most interesting clusters of rock formations can be seen in the “Błędne Skały” reserve and
on Mount Szczeliniec Wielki (919 meters above sea
level). The slopes and foothills of the plateau contain spruce and beech forests, while the high moors
are covered with marsh plants growing in protected
areas on the flat, table-like tops of the mountains.

The park is located in the vicinity of Warsaw and encompasses the
Kampinoska Forest, spreading over the Wisła River glacial valley. Belts
of inland sand dunes, overgrown with pinewoods, add to the attractiveness of the park’s landscape. In the depressions between the dunes
there are peat bogs, meadows and marshes covered with a growth of
alder. The park’s flora abounds in rare and protected species. Its wildlife
includes animals such as elk, beaver, and lynx. The park has been recorded on the UNESCO list of World Biosphere Reserves.
The park encircles the upper reaches of the
Karkonosze Mountains with their highest peak,
Mount Śnieżka (1,603 meters above sea level).
The most important natural and picturesque areas
of the Karkonosze are carefully protected. This
includes a zone comprised mostly of rocks with
post-glacial depressions, mountain lakes, and
multiple rock formations, or ostańce. These slopes
are mainly covered with spruce mixed with beech,
sycamore and linden the upper parts of which

The greatest natural feature of the park is its
well-preserved and unspoilt swampy River
Narew valley which features a unique system
of flood waters, old riverbeds, bulrushes and
shallow bogs, which together are known as
The Polish Amazonia. The Narwiański National Park is home to almost half of all the
water flora which can be found in Poland.
Many varieties of the park’s plants are under
total protection. Swampy Narew Valley is an
important haven for birds in Europe. It has a
particularly rich bird life of nearly 200 species
with 154 species nesting here. Many of them
are endangered, for example the aquatic warbler, the corncrake,
the small bittern, the black stork, the shortPajewo
eared owl and others. Some species of this
local waterfowl family are difficult to spot
elsewhere in Europe. The park is under Kol.

The park is situated near Cracow and occupies the southern part of the KrakowskoCzęstochowska Plateau and the valleys of the
Prądnik and Sąspówka rivers. Numerous caves,
scenic ravines, rocky passes and spectacular
rock formations, the famous “Hercules’ Club”,
have been created here by nature. Almost 400
caves are scattered around the park with the
Łokietka, Ciemna and Zbójecka caves amongst
the biggest. Forests, mainly mixed, cover the
major part of the park. As for the park’s flora,
the most characteristic species are those of
high mountain grasses and steno thermal
lichen. The insect population is extremely diversified (over 3,300 species) including 1,142 species of beetles and 520 species of butterflies.
The caves are a perfect shelter for a multitude
of bat species.

The park encompasses the central part of the Pieniny
Range with its highest Mount Trzy Korony (982 meters
above sea level) and the breath-taking Dunajec River
gorge. The most characteristic feature of this range is its
particularly diversified landscape. During the traditional
raft and kayak trips down the Dunajec River, visitors are
able to admire the picturesque crags and peaks, steep
rocky walls and several hundred meter high precipices
dropping down to the river. Lush flora abounds in a
number of endemic and reintroduced species of plants
like the Pieniny dandelion and the Pieniny wallflower.
Mixed beech and fir forests are predominant in the area.
Barren slopes and ledges are covered with small, pine
forests. The exceptionally rich and interesting wildlife
and the insect population – of butterflies in particular
– are a distinctive feature of the meadows nestled in
the forest glades and on the rocky slopes. Among the
multitude of butterflies there are the Apollo Butterfly and
the rarer Swallowtail Butterfly. Amphibians and reptiles
under total protection include the triturus, the spotted
salamander, the common European adder and others.
Mammals are represented mostly by rodents and 17
species of bats. Among the bird population the wallcreeper is to be specially noted.

This park covers the central part of the Roztocze Mountain
Range. Deep ravines divide the mountain slopes. The Wieprz
and Tanew rivers wind their way gently across the park. Forests,
mainly beech and fir, cover 93 percent of the park’s territory.
The rich flora includes lowland and highland species, as well
as steno thermal species from South Eastern Europe. The
Roztoczański National Park can lay claim to 190 species of
birds. Stud farms where Tarpans, Polish miniature horses, are
bred, are very popular with visitors.

The park is located in the Łęczyńsko - Włodawskie Lake District (Lublin Polesie) and
includes a unique flatland of extensive peat bogs and swamps. In places it is reminiscent of the tundra or the transitional zone between tundra and taiga. The peat
bogs are home to many species of rare plants. The park is the nesting ground of numerous aquatic birds and also a refuge for animals such as the elk, wolf and the rare
marsh turtle. The park has been recorded on the UNESCO list of World Biosphere
Reserves and is under the protection of the RAMSAR International Convention.

level. The lakes of Łebsko and Gardno are an
important refuge for aquatic birds. Various plant
colonies in the Słowiński National Park are of
special interest. They range from the dune and
pioneer plant species on the sandy beaches to
the typical coastal pinewood and marsh plants in
the numerous peat bogs and on the lakeshores.
The park is inhabited by a number of rare bird
species including the white tailed eagle, the
eagle owl, cormorant, the black stork, and many
species of aquatic birds. The park has been
recorded on the UNESCO list of World Biosphere
Reserves. It is also under the protection of the

The park territory includes the Łysogóry Range
with Mount Łysica (612 meters above sea level),
the highest in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains, and
parts of the adjoining valleys. The Świętokrzyskie
Mountains, the oldest range in Poland, are formed
from Paleozoic rocks. Particular attention should
be drawn to the small, totally deforested areas,
called gołoborza, covered with quartzite boulders
and completely stripped of vegetation. The ridges
of the Łysogóry Range are covered with fir forests
mixed with pine, beech and larch. The park’s
rich plant population includes many rare species
of mountain and lowland plants. The king of the
park’s wildlife, and its emblem, is the deer.

The Warta River Mouth National Park stretches
across the Toruńsko-Eberswaldzka glacial river valley,
close to where the Warta flows into the River Odra.
Open meadows overgrown with alder and crisscrossed
by a dense network of canals and old riverbeds are
characteristic of the park landscape. The River Warta
flows right through the park’s center. Unique wetlands,
vast meadows and pastures create a perfect habitat for
aquatic bird species. There are 248 species of birds
in the Warta River Mouth National Park; 160 species
have chosen the park’s territory for breeding purposes.
Twenty-six species are rare or protected and include
the corncrake, the aquatic warbler, the black-tailed godwit, the crane, the bittern, and the white-tailed
eagle. There are also quite sizeable populations of
grebes, ducks, rails, gulls, and terns. For many of them
the park is their nesting ground in Poland. It is
also an important wintering area for whooper and mute
swans, ducks, geese and white-tailed eagles.
The park is under the protection of the RAMSAR
International Convention.

Tatrzański National Park
On the Polish side, the park surrounds and protects the whole Tatra massif with
its highest peak, Mount Rysy (2,499 meters above sea level), and is the only
region of an Alpine character in Poland. The jagged granite ridges and forested
slopes, post-glacial depressions, mountain lakes, numerous caves and scenic
valleys with rushing mountain streams create one of the most beautiful landscapes in Poland. Spruce forests mixed with fir, larch, beech and sycamore
dominate the foothills (up to 1,200 meters above sea level). The Highlands (up
to 1,550 meters above sea level) are covered with spruce with a few stone pine
stands. Dwarf pines (up to 1,800 meters above sea level) give way to Alpine
meadows and pastures, but over 2,300 meters above sea level crags and peaks
dominate. The flora of the Tatra Range abounds in indigenous and Alpine plants
and Alpine mammals such as marmot and chamois with a small population of
bears. The Tatra Range is one of Poland’s last refuges of the golden eagle. The
park has been recorded on the UNESCO list of World Biosphere Reserves.

Nowinka
Lake Wigry, one of the largest lakes
in north-eastern Poland, is an important element of this park which also contains 25 smaller lakes interconnected by a network
of rivers. The largest is the River Czarna Hańcza. Peat bogs, small and marshy
forest lakes are very characteristic of this park. Pine and spruce forests dominate,
but there are also colonies of moor, aquatic and meadow plants. Mammals living
in the forest include elk, red deer, roe deer, wolf and beaver. There is a profusion of
aquatic birds, and the park waterways teem with rare fish species such as powan,
the European white-fish, and bulltrout. The park is under the protection of the RAMSAR International Convention.

The park occupies the western part of Wolin Island. It encompasses a coastal
moraine that ends with a picturesque, steep, 95-metre high cliff that drops sharply
into the Baltic Sea and the Bay of Szczecin. It is the most interesting cliff shore
in Poland. Here, the shoreline is continuously retreating under the pounding of
the waves. As a result of the inclusion of Baltic coastal waters into the park it has
become the first Polish maritime nature reserve. Almost the whole area of the park
is covered with forests with many beech stands. A group of six lakes constitutes
the southern part of the park. The diversified plant cover is made up of many rare
species of undergrowth and steno thermal plants that grow in the sandy soil. The
wildlife includes rare species such as the white-tailed eagle and numerous aquatic
birds. In the center of the park there is a small bison reserve.
