EAST LYME MIDDLE Mariners Monthly– October & November Fall Fun SCHOOL Class Updates! By: Summer L., Ella S., Michelle S., and Ellie M. Math: Recently, the sixth graders have been working on decimal operations, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. While the fifth graders have been adding and subtracting decimals, and working with the powers of ten. Both grades had a test on Thursday, October 23rd, on the topics mentioned above. Happy Fall!!!!! OCTOBER BIRTHDAYS Briannah 6 Ben 7 Andrew 5 Michelle 22 We have also been working on observations, inferences, the scientific method. Social Studies: In Social Studies we’ve been pretty busy. We kicked the year off with time-zones and lines of latitude and longitude. Our teacher, Mrs. Jorgensen, recently assigned the first project of Science: In the multithe year. Language Arts: Recently in LA, we began reading a new book called Journey to Jo’burg. It’s about two kids named Naledi and Tiro, who go to Johannesburg to inform their mother that their baby sister is very ill and she needs immediate help. Each night, we’ve been recording evidence of certain character traits. Eventually, we’ll have to understand how our character evolves throughout the book. Some characters may go through major change, but others not so much. In addition, we read a pleasure book at home for 25 minutes every night, and record it in our reading log. Boston Science Museum On October 16, we went on our first field trip of the year – the Boston Science Museum! Everybody enjoyed it very much. The following are some things that we saw there: The lightning show was a really amazing experience for everyone. A woman was using this special machine called a van dour Graf generator to create indoor lightning. Depending on how high she turned up the machine, the sparks would be different sizes, and sounds of different intensities would be heard. At 15,000 volts, the spark would be barely visible and audible, while at 1 million volts, it would be extremely loud and bright. There was also a huge metal cage that rose up and down where the woman was “trapped.” We discovered even though metal conducts electricity, she wouldn’t be harmed, as the metal surrounded her everywhere. The butterfly garden was also very extraordinary ! A butterfly garden is a greenhouse full of foliage and assorted live butterflies. So many students had butterflies land on them. Even Mrs. Brisbois had a huge yellow butterfly land in her hair! The exhibits were especially interesting and unique in their own ways. Seeing is Deceiving, was a hallway of a bunch of pictures and interactive brain games to fool your mind. There was also an exhibit named Science in the Park. Which showed the way that science is always surrounding us even if we don’t realize it, at the park and at home.
