AKC National Owner Handler Series (NOHS)
NOHS IS BEING OFFERED AT THE
ABA NATIONAL SPECIALTY!
Remember to check the box at the bottom of the entry form to participate. If you are
entering on the SDS website online entry, list NOHS in one of the spots for additional classes. There is no entry fee for participating in the NOHS.
The AKC National Owner-Handled Series is a non-titling competition for dogs that
are exhibited by their owners that are not professional handlers*.
All dogs that are owner-handled and are not solely owned or exhibited by professional handlers* meet the
requirements for this competition. Exhibitors must declare their dog is Owner-Handled eligible at the time of
entry using the check box on the entry form. Eligible dogs will be identified by an asterisk in the steward’s book
& the catalog. Dogs must be handled throughout the breed level competition for the regular show by an
eligible owner. Professional handlers*, household members and current assistants** to professional
handlers may not exhibit the dog in this competition.
Owner-Handled Best of Breed/Variety will be selected from the dogs that are eligible to compete in the Best of
Breed/Variety competition including Winners Dog, Winners Bitch and winners of the non-regular classes.
However • If the Best of Breed/Variety winner is Owner-Handled competition eligible, it will automatically be Owner-Handled Best of Breed/Variety and be eligible to compete in both the regular as well as the Owner-Handled group.
• If the Best of Breed/Variety winner is not eligible for Owner-Handled competition and the Best of Opposite Sex
to Best of Breed/Variety is eligible, the Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed/Variety will compete against the
eligible exhibits of the other sex to determine Owner-Handled Best of Breed/Variety.
• If neither the Best of Breed/Variety nor the Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed/Variety are Owner-Handled
competition eligible and Select Dog & Select Bitch are both eligible, the judge is to choose Best Owner-Handled
exhibit from the Selects and eligible Winners Dog or Winners Bitch.
• If one of the Selects is eligible, excuse all Champions and non-regular class winners of the same sex and then
choose Best Owner-Handled exhibit from the remaining dogs of the opposite sex including the eligible Winners.
• If the regular show Best of Breed/Variety, Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed/Variety, Select Dog & Select
Bitch are not eligible, the judge may choose any eligible dog who competed in Best of Breed/Variety including
Winners Dog or Winners Bitch as the Best of Breed/Variety for the AKC National Owner-Handled Series.
• If the Best of Winners is eligible, the other Winners are ineligible since it was defeated.
• No class dogs other than the Winners Dog & Winners Bitch are eligible to return to the ring.
The breed will not be represented in the Owner-Handled Group (for an all breed show) if there is no eligible dog
competing in the Best of Breed/Variety or in Best of Winners competition.

2015 ABA National Health and Research
Seminar - Cardiology, Part II
Last year the H & R Committee conducted the first National DNA Blood Draw for Health. Thank you
to all who donated their dogs DNA. The Health and Research Committee is extremely pleased to announce that $10,000 has been donated towards cancer research, particularly in regards to lymphoma
and hemangiosarcoma.
We also held our first Echocardiogram Clinic under the expertise of Dr. Joshua Stern,
DVM, PhD, DACVIM – Cardiology at UC Davis. Cardiac disease, in particular SAS (sub-aortic stenosis) was identified as one of most important diseases affecting our breed. Last year out of 21 dogs
tested, over 50% were either affected or equivocal.
A Phase I study will be initiated to identify the gene(s) that causes SAS in Bullmastiffs.
American Bullmastiff Association National Specialty 2015 29
To that end, approximately $35,000 will be donated to get this study underway. We are pleased to announce that Dr. Stern will once again offer an Echocardiogram
Clinic at this year’s National. All dogs that are echoed will be part of a confidential bullmastiff cardiology repository. Additionally, if you have had your dog echoed with another cardiologist, you may
take part in this study.
Pre-registration is PREFERRED. Limited number will be accepted at door.
Cost of Echo: $125.00. This includes blood draw and inclusion in the study.
For those dogs echoed previously: No charge for blood work. You must bring the following:
1. Minimum 3 generation pedigree.
2. Echocardiogram report.
3. Submission Form for SAS and PS DNA Genetic Research

ABA 2015 Futurity
Location: Eukanuba Hall - Holiday Inn Roberts Centre
JUDGE: MR. ALAN KALTER
Futurity is an event held in conjunction with the National Specialty. It is similar to a Puppy Sweepstakes
except the nomination process is open only to breeders & co-breeders all of which must be members in good
standing with the American Bullmastiff Association, Inc. (ABA). The owner and/or co-owner must also be members
in good standing with the ABA or be published applicants for membership in the ABA prior to the 6th month
birthday of the nominated puppy. Futurity entries must be handled by the owner, co-owner, a member of the owner
or co-owner’s family, the breeder or an amateur handler. If a handler is unable to physically handle their entry
in a class, a substitute handler of his/her choice will be allowed providing they are not defined as a professional
handler. A professional handler may handle a dog that they own, co-own & are breeder or co-breeder of record
provided they are also an ABA member in good standing. In the case of a breeder winning more than one class, a
substitute handler of his/her choice may be used providing they are not defined as a professional handler.
Breeders of Futurity nominated dogs are responsible for informing their owners on the correct entry
procedures for the Futurity competition. The Futurity Chair or Show Secretary will not be held responsible for
incorrectly entered Futurity dogs & will remain indifferent & impartial to any differences over winnings between
breeder and/or co-breeder & the owner.
A Futurity involves a series of nominations prior to the date on which the Futurity is judged. Bitches that
have been bred are first placed in nomination at a fee set by the ABA, prior to the whelping. After the puppies
are whelped, one or more of the litter may be nominated at 12 weeks & 6 months of age. At 12 weeks, puppies
can be nominated for 6 months & dropped from the Futurity, however puppies cannot be added at 6 months
if they had not been nominated at 12 weeks. The only dogs eligible for entry in a Futurity are those whose
nominations have been kept current in accord with the ABA Standing Rules for Futurity.
A litter can be nominated if it is whelped on or after March 1, 2014 & on or before February 28, 2015. The
litter must be nominated prior to the whelping of the litter. The nomination process is completed in accordance
with the ABA Futurity Standing Rules & must be completed by the breeder(s) of record or lessee of the bitch.
The breeder(s) or lessee must be a member in good standing of the ABA & stay in good standing throughout
the entire process up to the day of the event.
ABA National Specialty dates are subject to change. In the event that a litter is eligible for two national futurity entries, the breeder of the litter must select which entry they would like to nominate the litter for. The litter
will only be eligible for one futurity entry at a National Specialty.
The Futurity class is considered a second entry in addition to a regular class for the National Specialty.
Under the “additional class” section of the entry form, enter “Futurity” along with the proper age category. A dog
may not be shown in a non-regular class without entry in a regular class. The entry fee for Futurity is paid from
futurity funds so no fee is required from the breeder/owner to the Show Secretary. Therefore, no entry fee for
Futurity is required.
32 American Bullmastiff Association National Specialty 2015
DIVISION OF ENTRY MONEY AS PRIZES
The Futurity funds will be split as follows: Forty-five percent (45%) will be divided equally among the (8)
eight first place winners in each age group. Twenty percent (20%) will be given to both the Best Bitch in Futurity
and Best Dog in Futurity. Fifteen percent (15%) will be retained by the ABA to cover reasonable Futurity
expenses including those incurred from Show Secretary and/or administrative fees. Given the unusual occasion
that the 15% holdback from the accumulated annual Futurity funds is not adequate to cover “reasonable
expenses” directly associated with the futurity, the Board may approve an additional amount to be withheld. The
additional amount would be withdrawn from the accumulated annual funds before the winnings allocations. If
there is no entry in a class, then those funds shall be allocated pro rata amongst the remaining classes and to
Best Dog in Futurity to Best Bitch in Futurity.
These funds will not be allocated to the ABA holdback. All winnings go to the breeder and/or co-breeder of record.

beyond Best of Breed. This is an independent specialty.
MULTIPLE DOG and BITCH classes will be judged on Saturday, following Best of Breed
NON-REGULAR CLASSES - MULTIPLE DOG ENTRIES
Stud Dog Class: For Stud Dogs and two of their Get. Stud dogs must be entered in the Stud Dog Class and shown in
the ring with their Get. Owner of the Stud Dog need not necessarily be the owner of the Get. The Get must be entered
individually in one of the regular classes, Best of Breed, or some non-regular class other than Stud Dog. Judging will be
based on merits of the Get.
NOTE: The Stud Dog may be entered separately in one of the Regular or Non-Regular classes at the first entry fee of $28, with
‘Stud Dog’ class indicated on the entry form in the space for ‘Additional Class’ at an additional $23, OR, the Stud Dog may be
entered in Stud Dog class only for a $23 non-regular entry fee.
Brood Bitch Class: Same as Stud Dog Class except substitute Brood Bitch for Stud Dog and Produce for Get.
NOTE: *Chapter 11, Section 8 of the “Rules Applying to Dog Shows” provides that a neutered male may be entered as a Stud
Dog in the Stud Dog Class and a spayed Bitch may be entered as a Bood Bitch in the Brood Bitch Class.
As the Judge’s decision in the Stud Dog, Brood Bitch and Brace Classes will be based on the merits of more than one dog
34 American Bullmastiff Association National Specialty 2015
or bitch, no one of the dogs or bitches making up the entry judged first in these classes will be eligible to compete for Best of
Breed by virtue of having won these classes.
Brace Class: Each Brace shall be composed of two Bullmastiffs, irrespective of sex, owned by an identical owner.
Entry fee is $23 for the unit. If the dog that is part of the Brace is not entered in another Class, it must be entered
for “Brace Class Only”. For a dog for which this is an additional class, indicate Brace in the “Additional Entry”
portion of the entry form. If more than one Brace is entered by identical owner, the dog comprising each Brace Unit
must be designated “Brace#1”, “Brace#2, Etc.
NOTE: (eff. 1-1-05) A brace is defined by AKC as two dogs of the same recognized breed or variety that are similar in
appearance, performing in unison, and presented by a maximum of two handlers. Both dogs competing in brace competition
must have at least one common owner.
ADDITIONAL BREED JUDGING INFORMATION FOR EXHIBITORS:
BEST OF BREED - The Best of Breed competition entries will be brought into the show ring in its entirety to check armbands
and then will be judged in groups
BEST PUPPY IN PUPPY CLASSES - First Place Winners in each regular puppy class will compete for Best Puppy after Best
of Breed judging. Higher level awards to a puppy such as Reserve Winners or Best of Opposite Sex, defeats all other puppies
from all previous classes for that sex. Best of Winners defeats all other puppies of both sexes. Awards of Merit placements
superseded all other puppies. A puppy winning Best of Breed is automatically awarded Best Puppy.
BEST BRED BY EXHIBITOR - The Bred By Exhibitor class shall be for dogs that are six months of age or older as of the first
day of the show; not Champions of Record, individually registered with the American Kennel Club, and owned or co-owned by
any of the breeders of record as of the date of closing of entries for the show. The person handling the dog in this class must
be a breeder of record or an owner of record of this dog. In any subsequent classes for which a dog from the Bred by Exhibitor
class becomes eligible, there are no restrictions as to who may handle.
BEST BRINDLE - Best Brindle, an intersex class to be judged after Best of Breed, is open to all Brindles previously undefeated
by another Brindle in a class during the judging of the regular and non-regular classes that lead to and include Best of Breed.
This includes Veterans but NOT Sweepstakes, Futurity, or any class where an award depends on more than one dog for
placement. Higher level awards to a Brindle, such as Reserve Winners or Best of Opposite Sex defeat the unbeaten Brindles
from all previous classes for that sex. Best of Winners defeats other class brindles of both sexes. Awards of Merit placements
supercede those previously defeated from the classes. A brindle Select Dog or Select Bitch would supersede brindle winners
of Awards of Merit. A brindle winning Best of Breed is automatically awarded Best Brindle.
BEST VETERAN - First Place winners in each regular veteran class will compete for Best Veteran after Best of Breed judging.
Awards of Merit placements supersede all other veterans of that sex. A veteran Select Dog or veteran Select Bitch would
supersede veteran winners of Awards of Merit. A Veteran winning Best of Breed is automatically awarded Best Veteran.
SEE PAGES 12-20 FOR A COMPLETE LISTING OF AWARDS & DONORS.
ABA Triathlon
TRIATHLON RULES
The Triathlon will be comprised of competition in three areas:
1) Conformation, 2) Standard Agility, 3) Obedience or Rally.
• Dogs must be entered in regular classes for Obedience or Rally and Standard Agility.
• Dogs will compete at the levels they are eligible for and additional points will be awarded for upper level classes.
• Teams participating in the Triathlon can choose to compete in either Rally or Obedience. However, scores will be adjusted to allow for the significant difference in level of difficulty and skills required between Rally and Obedience. For teams competing in both Rally and Obedience, the highest score earned will be counted.
• The same team of dog and handler must complete all three phases of the competition, with no exceptions. The handler must be a registered owner of the dog, or a member of the immediate family of a registered owner of the dog. To be eligible to participate, dogs must compete in a regular Standard Agility class, a regular Obedience class or a Rally class. Dogs will also compete in Triathlon Conformation.
Placements will be determined by the total points earned and calculated as follows:
1.) CONFORMATION (Judge: Mrs. Denise Borton)
Dogs will be judged according to the AKC standard, with the exception that spayed and neutered dogs may compete in Triathlon conformation.
American Bullmastiff Association National Specialty 2015 35
ABA Top Twenty-Five
Thursday - October 8, cont.
ABA Triathlon continued . . .
• A judge will be appointed by the National Show Committee with the approval of the ABA Board.
• A total of 100 possible conformation points may be awarded by the judge, with dogs to be scored and placed
according to points awarded.
• Any dog disqualified by the judge will receive no score.
2.) STANDARD AGILITY – Regular & Preferred Jump Heights • Novice: Score
• Open: Score + 10
• Excellent: Score + 20
Faults scored as follows:
• Failure (F) = 10 points • Excusal (E) = No score (eliminating in ring, judge determines dog
• Refusals/run outs (R) = 5 points
is out of control, leaving ring, course not completed)
• Wrong course (W) = 5 points
• Time faults = 1 pt per second
- For dogs competing in both Excellent and Advanced, the highest score earned will be used; for dogs competing in both obedience and rally, the highest score will be used.
3a.) OBEDIENCE • Novice: Score divided by 2*
• Open: Score + 20 divided by 2* • Utility: Score + 40 divided by 2*
- For dogs competing in both Open and Utility, the highest score earned will be used; for dogs competing in
obedience and rally, the highest score will be used.
3b.) RALLY • Novice: Score multiplied by .4
• Advanced: Score multiplied by .55
• Excellent: Score multiplied by .65
Our Breed’s Premier Event - Thursday, October 8
Notes: For Rally and Agility, a maximum score of 100** is possible. Obedience has a maximum score of 200**,
so the score is divided by 2. (**Before Triathlon adjustments for levels).
Doors Open at 6:00 p.m.
Judging Begins at 7:00 p.m.
~ Cash Bar ~
There is a significant difference in difficulty between Rally and Obedience competition. Rally competition does
not require the same skills as obedience (i.e., In Rally, handlers may talk/encourage/praise dogs, give multiple
commands, retry exercises, and complete only a short sit or down stay exercise on lead. In Obedience, dogs
work without multiple commands, encouragement/praise during exercises, exercises are not retried, dogs
complete much longer sit and down stays off lead in a row of other dogs across the ring from their handlers.)
So while a choice is given to compete in Rally or Obedience for the Triathlon, scores must be adjusted to
reflect the level of difficulty for each.
