This year there were over 80 products entered ranging from classic whiskeys to the new wave of craft gins and vodkas. We were astounded to see an amazing 13 gins alone! The judging is done in the most impartial manner possible with volunteers coming from both the Celtic Whiskey Club and the Irish Whiskey Society. We must extend our thanks to all the brave tasters who took part in blind tasting of the samples, it was a hard job in the end and we must commend them on their enthusiasm and focus. It must also be said that many judges were amazed at the quality of products on offer this year. We do hope the distilling industry continues down this path and increases awareness for these amazing products around the world. Each cask is aged to perfection and we have to sample them regularly before choosing the exact moment for bottling. Due to their limited nature these sell out quite quickly and make an excellent gift for whiskey drinkers and collectors. 2015 €125 Celtic Cask 13 Trí Déag 70cl / 46% – This fourteen year old whiskey was initially matured in a first fill bourbon barrel before a final period of finishing in a Brunello di Montalcino red wine barrel from Altesino. They are based in Elgin near the mouth of the Spey River. For over 120 years they have been building relationships with other distilleries and have a core range of ‘semiofficial’ bottlings that tend to offer better value for money than the distillery bottled versions. Mortlach is a perfect example, and the company offer a great range from this classic Speyside distillery. Gordon & Macphail have always served this highly sought after distillery well. The company has good stocks of Mortlach dating back to the mid-1900’s and recently released a very expensive 75 year old! The distillery is unique in Scotland, practising a complex form of partial triple distillation. The whiskies are mostly matured in high quality Sherry casks which contribute to the malt’s rich, fruity and meaty complexity. – Mortlach 21 Year Old Mortlach 1984 Mortlach 1971 70cl / 43% 70cl / 40% 70cl / 43% A big staff favourite. This is classic Mortlach and has a beefy, meaty character from some use of good quality refill Oloroso Sherry casks. Lots of body and flavour with some intriguing charred oak nuances. Lovely stuff. An incredible expression of Mortlach. Maturation in first use Sherry butts gives this some wonderful richness and complexity. Flavours of orange and strawberries along with some rich chocolate notes. Part of Gordon & Macphail’s Rare Vintage series. This has been entirely aged in 1st fill Sherry Butts giving it some gloriously rich flavours of milk chocolate, dates, orange peel and prunes. A very good after dinner dram. – – €119 .99 €269 .99 €599 .99 Speymalt- Macallan Distillery This is a great range of independently bottled Macallan single malts and, compared to the distillery’s own releases, these are especially good value. Essentially they are drinking whiskies, not for keeping as trophies like some of the almost unobtainable Macallans. Like the Mortlach bottlings, most of the Speymalt range are aged in top quality ex-Sherry barrels. Speymalt-Macallan 2005 Speymalt-Macallan 1997 Speymalt-Macallan 1981 70cl / 43% 70cl / 43% 70cl / 43% Matured in first fill and second fill ex-Sherry casks and bottled in 2014. Like the 2005 this is aged in first and second fill Sherry casks. Here it has taken on some lovely charred oak characters along with hints of milk chocolate, spice and fresh fruits. Something a little bit different but equally as good as the other Speymalts. This expression is aged in first use Bourbon barrels and was bottled at 32 years old in 2013. The whisky matures a lot faster than those in other countries thanks to the warm and humid climate, even at 2 years old tasters have been impressed. It has already won some very prestigious awards and often beats similar styled Scottish whiskies in blind tastings. Like Japan in recent years, it appears that Taiwan could become a real force in the whisky world. Kavalan is definitely here to stay and the quality of the whisky is top class. So far the distillery has been awarded: Kavalan Classic Single Malt Kavalan Concertmaster Port Cask Finish Single Malt 70cl / 45% – Most customers are surprised at how good this is considering the price and lack of age statement. Unfortunately that is all long gone, but here we have some very fine (and more affordable) Japanese whiskies. These hit a convenient flavour profile that for many bridges the gap between the sweetness of Irish whiskeys and Scottish single malts. We love them! JAPANESE WHISKY Taketsuru Pure Malt Nikka from the Barrel 70cl / 43% – 50cl / 51.4% – One of our favourite Japanese whiskies. Precisely what this means is debatable, but the whisky tastes delicious! €59.99 American Whiskey Gold Medal - International Spirits Challenge 2013 €46.99 America has recently seen a boom in craft distilling similar to the current renaissance in Ireland.
