Improving results through improved relationships at Tauranga Boys
Improving results through improved relationships at Tauranga Boys’ College The Academic Coaching model. Richard Hall (Deputy Principal) Mike Akkerman (Year 12 Dean) October 2013 We decided, that, as with teaching boys, the relationship between the teacher and student could be harnessed. So what did we do? We used the ‘experts’ in the College We made a visit We met with Sam Smith and the team at Massey High. On that trip we had at least one representative from each important area. It was led by the Principal. We knew we had… Uneven delivery A desire to climb higher The Academic Coaching Initiative Began in 2011. TWO form teachers per form class. We ran at the beginning of the year PLD for staff on how to ‘coach’ students. We made it a focus in school wide assemblies and newsletters. Careers staff put each year 11 boy through the careerquest programme. Supported staff with; The PLD. On interview technique, a TWO way conversation. The range of ‘industries’ instead of jobs. Use of the KAMAR ‘Student Profile’ application. Support staff to enter the information and print when required. Extended form times when required. It’s always an issue… The Whanau Meeting We changed the format of an existing parent/teacher meeting. 20 -30 minutes with each Yr 11 student and their parent(s). Explained why we were there. What we had already done. Where the GROW goals looked like they were leading in terms of an industry. How NCEA worked. Any other questions We collected current student data This was done through the KAMAR SMS, using the estimated credits database. The Dean and the Tutor Worked together to plan interventions Updated ‘Credits to Date’ shared with the form teacher and the student. Also sent home to the parents 4 times a year. Have strategic meeting where we select a group of students to work with. In 2014 will be part of the WBOP Smartpaths Trades Academy for Yr 12 students.
