Enbridge hosted a group of students and their
teachers from Montrose School, and representatives
of the Boys and Girls Club/Big Brothers Big Sisters of
Edmonton on April 25th as part of the Corporate Site
Based Mentorship Program.
The Alberta Emergency Management Agency
launched the ‘Alberta Emergency Alert’ public
warning program in 2011. Alerts are distributed
to the public through various outlets including
radio, TV, internet, RSS feed, social media and
road signage using the same technology as the
Amber Alert. Visit emergencyalert.alberta.ca for
more information.
Under this program, 15 Enbridge employees
have been mentoring elementary students from
Montrose School located within Edmonton’s inner
city. Today the students learned about Enbridge’s
pipeline operations, tanks, and the crude oil and
liquids products that the company delivers.

Saturday, June 9th, 10 am – 2 pm
Connecting with the Southeast Edmonton
community was the goal of the April 28th Community
Awareness Emergency Response (CAER) Fair at
Capilano Mall. Over 400 people came to have
breakfast, visit industry information displays,
learn about air quality and participate in the
day’s activities.
The SIA wishes to thank Capilano Mall, Albert’s
Restaurant, Edmonton Fire and Rescue and all
who contributed to a successful event.
“Enbridge is proud to be part of this inaugural
program,” says Lee Monthei, Executive Sponsor
of the Enbridge Corporate Site Based Mentorship
Program and Vice President of Engineering and
Construction. “Through our commitment of time,
employees gain a better understanding of their
communities, the challenges they face and the ways
Enbridge and our employees can best contribute.”
This program is a win-win as not only do the
employees benefit, but research shows that youth
involved in mentoring programs are more likely to
pursue higher education, achieve higher grades,
and have improved relationships with their peers
and adults.

SUMMER
2012
Every Week is Environment Week!
Strathcona Industrial Association (SIA) members are continuously improving their operations to meet and
exceed environmental performance targets. Various initiatives have resulted in enhanced environmental
performance, including equipment and technology upgrades, regular maintenance, waste reduction and
diversion programs, and energy conservation.
SIA members are actively involved in province-wide environmental initiatives, creating strategies that will
support sustainable industrial development for the future. While a week is dedicated to raising environmental
awareness in Canada, it is part of how business is done each day at SIA member facilities.
Ambient Air Quality Monitoring
The SIA’s ambient air quality monitoring network has been in place since 1979. The network has a number of
stations located around a 12 km2 area in east Edmonton and west Strathcona County to:
• monitor air quality trends and changes
• confirm effectiveness of emission control measures
• assist with immediate investigation of unusual readings
• collect and contribute data for scientific studies
• provide air quality information to the community
• monitor off-site air quality in an emergency situation
Annual Summaries and More Info
SIA publishes annual ambient air monitoring network summary
reports that are available on-line. Visit www.sia.ab.ca to download,

Strathcona Industrial Association
Kinder Morgan Canada has announced plans for added
capacity at the Trans Mountain Edmonton terminal in the
industrial area near Sherwood Park in Strathcona County.
The terminal currently houses 19 tanks with a total
capacity of approximately 2.6 million barrels. Driven by
market demand, the terminal will undergo an expansion,
including construction of 10 additional tanks and related
facility infrastructure. This will bring the terminal total
storage capacity to 6.2 million barrels. The new tankage
will be located within the existing Edmonton terminal
boundaries, with construction scheduled to begin in
May 2012 and the 10 new tanks in service by the end of
2013. The Edmonton terminal is an important petroleum
storage hub with unparalleled upstream and downstream
connectivity. It provides temporary storage for crude oil
and petroleum products transported through the Trans
Mountain pipeline from Alberta’s oil producing regions to
marketing terminals and refineries on the west coast. The
project will generate approximately 100 new jobs at any
given time during construction and approximately four
new positions during operations.

Maintenance at Imperial Oil
It’s spring and Imperial Oil’s Strathcona refinery is
undergoing planned maintenance work. People living
near the refinery may notice periods of increased traffic,
the occasional and temporary use of the refinery flare
system and additional noise and lights.
The maintenance activity is essential to keep refinery
equipment in top working condition for safe and
reliable operations. A series of major activities are
underway to inspect, upgrade, clean and perform
important maintenance on equipment. If you have questions about refinery operations or the
maintenance work, there are several ways you can
reach the refinery:
• 24 hour line at 780-449-3776
• Community relation office (Monday to Friday
8:00 am – 4:30 pm) at 780-449-8571
• Email to: [email protected]
The Mammoet Sliding Gantry, or MSG as it is known,
is a unique piece of equipment that is used all
over the world. It’s at Strathcona refinery to assist
with spring maintenance. For more information
