Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas
In the early 1960s, three physicians arrived in the village of Encinitas with the idea of starting a
small medical clinic. Over the next five decades the clinic grew steadily, guided by their vision and
empowered by grassroots support.
From those modest beginnings to the opening of the Leichtag Foundation Critical Care Pavilion
in June 2014, Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas has matured into an award-winning hospital,
serving thousands of patients each year – thanks to the imagination of our founders and the
support and generosity of the community.
The Campaign for Scripps Encinitas
The North San Diego County communities have grown exponentially over the last generation and
the need for expanded hospital services has grown significantly during that time.
In response, The Campaign for Scripps Encinitas was launched to provide community support
for new facilities and programs to meet the growing need. The first phase raised $40 million in
philanthropic support to help build the Leichtag Foundation Critical Care Pavilion, with a 40-bed
emergency department, and a 36-bed, all private room medical/surgical unit.
The final phase of the Campaign will ensure our legacy of healing by providing funds for the
construction of two, state-of-the-art operating rooms, equipped with the latest in imaging
and surgical technology. We will also upgrade our four existing operating suites, expand the
pre-operative care unit to improve patient comfort, and enhance our post-anesthesia (recovery)
unit. Through the sponsorship of a signature piece in our Healing Arts Collection, your philanthropic
investment will not only provide our hospital with inspiring works of art but will directly support
our surgical expansion efforts.

Imagine. Inspire. Heal.
It is commonly agreed that hospitals can be stressful places for patients and their
loved ones. Fear of the unknown and hours spent waiting often contribute to this
unease. For some time now, research has shown that this stress and discomfort can
be reduced through incorporating the Arts into the healthcare environment.
Healing environments incorporate natural light, access to the outdoors and gardens,
and art installations with images that introduce nature and familiar settings and
activities to viewers. Studies have shown that both patient and caregiver stress
is measurably reduced, quality of care is increased, and costs of treatment go
down when previously sterile wall space is enhanced through the integration of
appropriate, intentional, evidence based art in hospitals.
Research tells us that when these curatorial art projects are installed, we can measure
improvement in positive emotions, feelings of being cared for and, in many cases,
improved health outcomes. These emotions and experiences, in turn, can reduce
pain, fear and anxiety; reduce the need for sedative drugs and length of hospital
stay; improve mental, physical and psychological function; reduce errors in providing
care and increase job satisfaction in staff.
Responding to this research, Scripps Health, working with Aesthetics, Inc., an art
consulting firm specializing in the creation of art programs in hospitals, has created
the Healing Arts Collection for the Leichtag Critical Care Pavilion at Scripps Memorial
Hospital Encinitas. Patients, visitors and caregivers will all benefit from the images
included in this collection, carefully selected to enhance this healing environment.
The artists included in the Healing Arts Collection were selected for the quality of
their artwork and their ability to intentionally design and create works that evoke the
variety and beauty of our North San Diego California landscape, from the beaches
and lagoons to our inland agriculture and ranches.
This project is designed by and for our community. We invite you to assist in making
it a reality through your sponsorship.

Lynn Heitler
Price $100,000
A Denver native, Lynn Heitler studied art at the University of
California at Berkeley, and continued her education at the Corcoran
Museum School in Washington, D.C.
In 2006, Lynn started to explore the field of digital art, and
transitioned from printing on paper and painting on canvas, to
printing on other surfaces such as glass, acrylic, fabric and vinyl. The
result of expanding into the sophisticated digital world launched
Lynn into her co-owned company, LYNNEL Art to Form. As a leader
in the emerging field of art that combines hand-created work with
digital images, Lynn is dedicated to creating imagery that is artful,
while taking advantage of the evolving possibilities that technology
offers.
Design Description: The suspended shapes are based on the
ginkgo leaf, which was selected, in part, because of some of the
healing and medicinal benefits of ginkgo biloba. The tree is among
the longest living tree species on the planet, and its leaves have
been thought for centuries to generate a variety of healing benefits
in humans. The fold of the leaf is asymmetrical, creating a unique
balance that is both abstract and interesting.

appreciate the contrasting values and colors highlighted by
the proximity of rows of flowers next to the blue sky, ocean

Ken Goldman
Price $25,000
Artist's Concept – "Moonlight Beach"
Ken Goldman is an internationally known artist, author,
teacher, art juror and current President of the American
Watercolor Society. A recipient of numerous awards, Ken
has exhibited widely in various group shows and solo
exhibitions in Holland, Paris, Mexico, New York, Boston,

permanent collections of the San Diego Museum of Fine
Art, and North Carolina’s Hickory Museum of Fine Art
among others.
Design Description: "Totally undisturbed, Western Gulls
calmly preen themselves during a late misty afternoon
at Moonlight Beach. This particular part of the beach is
their favorite place to congregate because the fresh water
outlet offers them salt free water to bathe in and to drink.
Having been both a bird artist and ornithologist during
much of my early career, I relished this opportunity to
include birds in a landscape."

2014 Aaron Chang was voted “Best Artist” by Ranch and
Coast magazine readers, and was named by the San Diego
Tourism Authority in 2014 as San Diego’s “Ambassador of
the Arts.”
Design Description: "I check the surf from here often, so I
know this spot very well. My vision for the shot would be to
capture the lagoon in the late afternoon when it's bathed in
warm soft sunlight. This would give the scene an inviting and
calming feeling for the viewer."

Karen Fedderson
Price $25,000
Artist's Concepts
Karen Fedderson has a degree in Fine Art and Design from El
Camino College and paints primarily from memory. She has
studied the effects of sunlight and atmosphere at different
times of the day and all seasons in locations throughout
California, especially the coast. When Karen finds the right
day for the right place she will walk the area and study
the way the light changes the possible compositions. Then
she spends time intensely studying the subject and finally
begins sketching. As the place reveals its secrets to her she
continues sketching and taking notes.
Design Description: "On my visits to North San Diego
County I found some particularly striking colorful cliffs
reflected in the water and wet sand in Encinitas. The
conditions of light in the morning and evening lead to two
different but harmonious color palettes and compositions.
After studying the area I settled on a view to the North in
the morning and a view to the South in the early evening.
They each reflect peaceful moments of walking along this
lovely beach."

Rising Above, will depict a series of images of San Elijo
Lagoon, the adjacent beaches and hills, and hot air balloons,
which are a local tradition and also a symbol of rising above
adversity and achieving new heights in one’s personal
journey. A dominant stylistic characteristic of the works will
be a break in the horizontal continuity by means of sharp
vertical edges between different images. At once, this design
element will offer variety in imagery and continuity amongst
the three panels. Conceptually, the connection between
technology and the natural environment are implied by the
seemingly digital separation and the beautiful, naturalistic

Deanne Sabeck
Price $50,000
Artist's Concept –"Imagine, Inspire and Heal"
Artist's Previous Work
Deanne Sabeck received a BFA from Arizona State University
and began her career in glass 39 years ago. Her work is shown
in many galleries across the country including Kuivato, her
own glass gallery in Sedona, Arizona. Using a reflective glass
called dichroic, she creates spatial sculptural installations of
light. The glass is bent, cast, fractured and sometimes etched
with text and or imagery, distorting and refracting the light
spectrum, bathing walls, floors and ceiling in vibrant color.
Conceptually, the work deals with illusion, perception and
the essence of our visual reality, LIGHT. Within this contest
she questions our ideas of reality and perception.

Paul Bond
Price $50,000
Artist's Concept – "The Incredible Lightness of Dreaming"
Paul Bond was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, and currently
resides in San Clemente, CA. Bond’s work has won
numerous awards and has been featured in galleries,
museums and cultural centers, including the Gateway
Museum in Farmington, NM and the San Diego Art Institute.
His paintings are now in private collections throughout the
U.S, as well as in Australia, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
Paul’s art lives in the spaces between dreaming and
reality. Drawing from the Latin American genre of Magic
Realism, his paintings merge symbolic, surreal and fantastic
elements with realistic atmospheres to unveil a world where
everything is possible. Using juxtaposition and the altering
of familiar objects mixed with equal parts whimsy, wonder
and mysticism, Paul’s works often carry deep metaphysical
and philosophical messages, illuminating the world of our
dreams and subconscious thoughts, hopes and desires.

Design Description: "The Incredible Lightness of
Dreaming" – "By replacing lighter-than-air hot air balloons
with stones, this piece then becomes a story of the dichotomy
of our dreams as either the burdens or the things that make
our lives worth living. Every one of us has unrealized desires.
When they are ignored out of fear that we cannot achieve
or don’t deserve them, our lives are tethered to an unfulfilled
potential. On the contrary, when we pursue those dreams
they will immediately lift our spirits and give new meaning
to our lives in unimaginably miraculous ways."
Design Description: "The Tree Swing" – "This painting
symbolizes a state of mind, our place in the clouds as it were,
where any of us can go to find inner peace and rejuvenate.
I know from experience the effects that meditation and
visualization have on our overall health and wellbeing. So
this scene then represents for me what that physical place
might look like when I am in perfect balance in my life. The
cliché of the corporate ladder is here replaced by the ladder
leading to our highest sense of joy and personal satisfaction."

Marcia Burtt
Price $75,000
Marcia Burtt was born in Virginia in 1941. She graduated from
UC Berkeley with majors in pre-med, psychology, and art,
earning a master’s degree in art from the University of Montana.
Her focus was on painting the figure until her 40s, but then
made the transition to landscape painting where she continued
to paint from life.
Standing in open spaces for hours a day has given Marcia a
passionate commitment to conserving land threatened by
development. Since 1986 she has worked with friends to record
these places in paint and to publicize them through exhibitions,
donating well over a million dollars to conservation groups.
Her work was featured most recently on the cover and inside
Southwest Art’s May 2015 issue and is represented in many
books, most notably California Light: A Century of Landscapes
published by Rizzoli.
Design Description: "Contemplating the simple beauties of
weeds and wildflowers, foothills, canyons, lagoons, and trees
on the ridge from the viewpoint of a waiting room or hallway
can take us away from our immediate surroundings of pain

Mia Tavonatti
Price $200,000
Artist's Concept – Glass Mosaic
Mia Tavonatti earned her MFA in Illustration from California
State University Long Beach. She now divides her time
between painting and stained glass mosaics, for which she is
internationally renowned. She has studied and lived in Paris,
Italy and Greece and has been creating art professionally
for twenty-five years. She has earned much recognition and
exhibited extensively in the US and Europe, including the
American Museum of Illustration in New York. Most recently,
Mia was one of eleven mosaic artists from ten countries
chosen for the 1st International Symposium of Mosaic Arts
in Cuiliamo, Italy.
Mia’s love of adventure led her to accept an invitation into
the Air Force Arts Program in Washington, D.C. where she
creates paintings for the U.S. Air Force permanent collection
exhibited at the Pentagon and National Airspace Museum
amongst others.
Design Description: "I spent a few days around the full
moon at lowest tide to photograph the tide pools since I
think this is the most unique thing about Swami’s. By
layering the images I was portraying the color, light and
landscape that changes so much from one hour to the next.
I used transparent layers to depict their connection to this
place and create an ethereal, almost mystical composition.
Swami’s is about the people, but more than that, it is about
how the people live with, and integrate with this special,
ever changing landscape. The sky is reflected below in the
wet sand, and the clouds dance on the water’s surface,
broken only by the waves. Swami’s Beach is a mystical,
dynamic place that plays with its people and invites them to
become one with nature, and with the light that shifts and
wraps them in its constantly changing moods."

Elsie Dye Sims
Price $25,000
Artist's
Concept
Elsie Dye Sims discovered and fell in love with printmaking
and woodcuts in particular while studying at Colorado
College, in Colorado Springs, CO. Although she enjoys
drawing and painting, the powerful lines and bold gestural
strokes of the woodcut process is a more satisfying
representation of her mind’s eye of nature. She has spent
many sun drenched days focusing on the landscapes of
Arizona, Colorado, Washington and Idaho. Now, the textural
coastline of Southern California surrounds her. The eroding
bluffs, the tidal flows, and the coastal vegetation reflect both
the beauty and strength of the natural forces that shapes
them. Through her newest large-scale landscape woodcuts,
with their expressive lines and vivid colors, she attempts to
capture and communicate the transforming character of the
spectacular Southern California coast.

Design Description: "The image for my artwork was
drawn on site on the trails of Rancho Santa Fe. The textures
surrounding the trail and the lines of the quintessential
Rancho Santa Fe eucalyptus lend themselves perfectly to
the wood cut process. The drawings will be transferred to
a woodblock, carved, printed by hand onto paper, then the
color is hand painted with acrylic and water color. I find the
woodcut process the perfect media to express the softness
and strength, the power, the energy and the continual
movement I see in nature."

Bruce’s work has been exhibited worldwide, has appeared in
over 45 books and countless times on television, in movies,
and in the press.
Design Description: "The sculpture I have designed is
abstract but has subtle references in both shapes and colors
to life at a California coastal town. I chose the bright fun
colors and shapes to liven people’s spirits. I have been told
by many of my collectors that they smile and get a boost in
mood every time they look at the sculptures they acquired
from me."

Bruce Gray served four years in the Coast Guard right after
high school, and then went to the University of Massachusetts
on the GI Bill where he received a BFA in Design in 1981. He
then worked as a photographer and then as a designer and
graphic artist at an advertising agency in Boston. Bruce kept
wanting to do his own work in the fine arts, so he moved
to Los Angeles in 1989 and started making his sculptures
full time. He works in a wide range of styles and mediums
which include abstract painting, functional art, giant objects,
abstract and figurative sculptures, found object assemblages,
and various forms of kinetic art including mobiles, rolling ball
machines, suspended magnet sculptures and more.

Karen Heyl
Price $100,000
Artist's Concept
Karen Heyl’s professional life as a stone sculptor began
in1985 when she was commissioned by Good Shepherd
Catholic Church in Cincinnati, Ohio to carve a three person
life size sculpture of “Human Family.” This was followed by a
fifty-foot long by eight-foot tall bas-relief mural representing
the story of Creation as told in the Bible. From this point
forward, Karen would make her living as a stone sculptor.
Since 1988, Karen has completed many works for hospitals,
park facilities and other public commissions.
Nature related subject matter is the motif that has inspired
Karen’s bas-relief sculptures, as it represents the flow of
life and has a soothing, healing power. Karen refers to her
work as stylized realism. By using old world stone carving
techniques, Karen combines simplified, sensual forms with a
variety of textural surfaces to create contemporary designs.

Design Description: "The images in this drawing represent
only some of the sea life off the coast of California in the
Pacific Ocean. It would be impossible to include all of the
different species of fish, so it is my job as an artist to create
the illusion of many fish. I do this by designing the space to
capture a “close up” view of fish swimming in and out of
the picture plane. Some of the fish and mammals are easily
identified such as, whales, dolphins, sea lions, stingrays and
sea turtles. The other fish forms are generic versions of the
multitudes of various other fish in the ocean. The swirls of
water and the swaying of the kelp help to create a sense of
movement."

Wendy Gauntlett-Shaw
Price $50,000
Artist's Concept
Wendy Gauntlett-Shaw was born in Washington, D.C., and
moved to California at a young age. After completing a
degree in art at Scripps College in Claremont, CA, a year
studying in Athens, Greece and working as an artist on
an archaeological dig, she worked as a commercial artist.
Wendy became an art director and a graphic designer while
continuing to draw, paint and sculpt.
After her children were born, Wendy returned to producing
fine art, while teaching art education. Showing her work in
galleries in San Diego and participating in local and regional
art festivals, Wendy has won many awards. She has shown at
the La Jolla Festival of the Arts and had a one woman show
at the Encinitas and Cardiff Libraries. Wendy has collectors
from San Diego to Washington, D.C., as well as international
clients.
Design Description: “This painting reflects the calm and
peaceful scene in Rancho Santa Fe with the wonderful late
afternoon light. Big fluffy white clouds dot the sky as two
horses graze tranquilly in the pasture. I love the rolling hills
in the distance, giving the painting a base for its location.
The grove of orange trees in the foreground with eucalyptus
trees gracing the scene are quintessential Rancho Santa Fe.
When I look at this painting I feel like I want to step into this
scene for a moment, reminding me to slow down, breathe
fully and take it all in."

Pete Tillack
Price $50,000
Artist's Concept
Pete Tillack is a self-taught artist who was born in Australia
and now resides in San Diego, California. His work is heavily
influenced by his emotions and experiences from traveling
and the love of surfing and is infused with the feelings of
serenity. His subject matter usually includes a body of water
to represent its importance in his life. Pete’s goal is to bring
the viewer to that stolen moment of time where they escape
their present surroundings and conditions to find a moment
of clarity! It is during this tranquil state where the viewer is
able to find the answers to any current problem surrounding
them or simply contemplate the aspiration of life’s directions.
Pete’s work casts stronger meaning, as he looks deeper into
the connections with the viewer. He feels lucky that along
the journey, he has found his talent, and it has allowed
him to be able to transpose a blank canvas into a story that
touches a stranger, and makes them a friend.
Design Description: "When I was commissioned to create
something special to be a main focus for the Scripps Encinitas
Hospital, I knew exactly the feeling that I wanted to portray
using oil on canvas.
"I have walked and spent many a time on the beaches and
in the water of the Encinitas Coast. There is nothing that
compares to the feeling of dusk when the sun is setting,
it is the final bow for the day. Just like the climax in the
last few minutes of any fireworks display, the sky becomes
a canvas of lights and this reflects so brilliantly across the
wet sand of a low tide. It becomes synonymous with the
reflection of your day, as you stroll and take in the fresh salty
air, the warm summer breeze and the sounds of the crashing
waves. Nothing breathes life and nature more clearly than
our oceans."

Lynn Heitler
Price $25,000
Artist's Concept –"Five Elements Triptych"
A Denver native, Lynn Heitler studied art at the University
of California at Berkeley, and continued her education
at the Corcoran Museum School in Washington, D.C.
In 2006, Lynn started to explore the field of digital art, and
transitioned from printing on paper and painting on canvas,
to printing on other surfaces such as glass, acrylic, fabric and
vinyl. The result of expanding into the sophisticated digital
world launched Lynn into her co-owned company, LYNNEL
Art to Form. As a leader in the emerging field of art that
combines hand-created work with digital images, Lynn is
dedicated to creating imagery that is artful, while taking
advantage of the evolving possibilities that technology offers.
Design Description: "The inspiration for the “Five
Elements” artwork came from the principles of Five Element
Acupuncture. The ancient Chinese perceived human beings
as a microcosm of the entire universe. Like the whole, we are
each comprised of five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal
and Water. And our interaction with every aspect of our
environment is understood through the Five Element system.
Our goal is to synthesize and present images, inspired by
these five elements, into one composition. By combining
these visual metaphors in a harmonious and balanced way,
the finished artwork will give the viewer a soothing and
potentially healing experience.
Even though this piece is calming, it is also paradoxically
energetic. The images, textures and colors are intended to
bring the viewer closer to his or her own Life Force."

Design Description: "Components of the Five Elements
triptych artwork based on ancient Chinese healing traditions
are also integrated in the entry vestibule suspended ceiling
piece, with the goal of creating a harmonious and balanced
artwork that gives a healing experience. Whether consciously
or not, the viewer's eye will shift between the two pieces and
will catch some level of synergy. While the colors and materials
connect, the suspended shapes have a very different look and
feel from the triptych. Fixed solidly on the wall, the larger flat
panels form a base from which the lighter, airy folded shapes
can be set in motion in the atrium."

of Rancho Santa Fe which were designated as key areas of interests
by local residents. A composite of these points of interest are then
drawn with a consideration to artistic design, consideration of the
materials used and aesthetically pleasing format. Upon approval
the actual featured items are constructed in clay and fired to 1800
degrees. They are then removed from the kiln, glazed and refired.
The pieces are individually mounted with thinset onto a concrete
composition board and then grouted according to the appropriate
color. The result is a bas relief mural following the tradition of the
Italian De la Robia.”

Artist's Concept – Fountain Mosaic "Endless Knot"
Christie Beniston is a Solana Beach artist who has been
creating public art projects, residential and commercial
commissions and fine art for more than 25 years. During
this time her work has been exhibited at museums and
galleries across the country. Her large-scale sculptures are
permanently installed in Pasadena, California and have been
included in the El Paseo Invitational Exhibition. Christie’s
private and public art commissions include Rady Children’s
Hospital, Southern Methodist Hospital, and the San Diego
Airport.
Design Description: "For the south fountain, I chose the
glass and handmade ceramic mosaic design to be based on
the symbol of the “Endless Knot.” While the spiral I used
in the north fountain mosaic symbolizes movement, energy,
and connection with nature, the endless knot, which is found
in art throughout many cultures, represents continuity and
longevity and resilience. The abstract pattern is designed to
weave in and out of the diagonal “knot” creating a whimsical
interaction across the mosaic which will continue onto the
horizontal shelf in the basin, giving the illusion that the knot is
without end."
