¡FELIZ AÑO AMIGAS Y AMIGOS DE LA CAMBALACHA!
Enero 2010
En este comienzo de año, con mucho viento y sol, queremos compartir con
ustedes nuestro último semestre del 2009 y lo que viene en el 2010.
Esperamos que este les sea un año de paz, salud y abundancia.
JÓVENES LÍDERES
La primera generación de jóvenes completó su proceso de tres años y dejan lugar a las
generaciones venideras, abriéndose camino en nuevos proyectos. Les deseamos mucha
luz y esperamos encontrarnos en espacios de creatividad y transformación y seguir, de
alguna manera, trabajando junt@s.
La segunda generación de jóvenes completó los cursos en el diplomado de Animación
Cultural avalado por la universidad de San Carlos. Recibieron 345 talleres a lo largo del año, de Artes
Escénicas y Visuales, Didáctica, Literatura, Cosmovisión, Prácticas Comunitarias, Derechos Humanos,
Problemática Nacional, Historia de Guatemala y Elaboración de Propuestas. Trabajaron duro para pasar
todos los exámenes y esperamos su ceremonia de graduación en los próximos meses. Este año liderarán
talleres para cientos de niños y niñas, y serán guías para la tercera generación de jóvenes.
GRUPO ARCO IRIS
Nuestro grupo de 35 niños y niñas en formación avanzada recibieron
220 talleres de Danza, Teatro, Artes Plásticas, Circo, Lúdica,
Cuenta-cuentos, Música/Canto, Derechos Humanos, Ecología,
Lectura y Escritura Creativa entre otros. Trece de ellos y ellas pasan
este año a formar parte de la tercera generación de Jóvenes Líderes.
COMUNIDADES
En nuestra sede de San Pablo, fueron 70 encuentros con casi 20 participantes cada
vez. Como clausura, invitamos a madres y padres de familia a pasar una Tarde de
Creatividad y Amistad con nosotr@s, y les entregamos diplomas de reconocimiento a
quienes estuvieron durante todo el año.
En la biblioteca de San Juan compartimos 26 talleres
con 35 niños y niñas. Fue un espacio de encuentro e
intercambio para much@s voluntari@s con esta comunidad que siempre nos
ha recibido con entusiasmo.
Dentro del programa Cambalacha en tu Escuela dimos 75 talleres a 84 niños
y niñas de kinder, párvulos y preprimaria de San Marcos; 25 niños y niñas
de párvulos de San Pablo; y, 363 niños y niñas de preprimaria a quinto grado en
la Aldea de Tzununá.
Fue un año muy activo para el programa Katok Pa´ con 19 grupos diferentes, en
103 talleres con 329 participantes. Coreografías, comparsas, y obras de teatro se
crearon en este marco. A este programa se sumaron las comunidades de San
Pedro, Santa Cruz, Patzún y Santa Lucía.
TEATRO DEL OPRIMIDO
Estamos explorando más y más esta herramienta que
tanto nos inspira. Desde principios de año estamos en
procesos de capacitación y en el segundo semestre
incorporamos talleres con diferentes grupos de La
Cambalacha y de otras comunidades. Sentimos que es un
medio muy poderoso y efectivo de transformación a
través del arte y esperamos seguir explorando, conociendo y compartiendo con él.
VOLUNTARI@S
Fueron 56 las personas que se sumaron a nuestra familia, aportando,
inspirándonos y haciéndonos crecer. Nos ayudaron a dar talleres, a
cuidar el espacio, a construir nuevos espacios, a crear, a montar
presentaciones, a tener vestuario nuevo, a incursionar en temas y
técnicas que desconocíamos, a replantearnos metodologías, y sobre
todo, a seguir creyendo en lo que hacemos. Hubo una persona muy
especial, quien estuvo acompañándonos por más de un año, demostrando entrega y
energía increíbles. Gracias Ashleigh, por hacer de este un año tan maravilloso.
PROYECTO PAYASO

La primera generación de jóvenes estuvo trabajando intensamente con Proyecto Payaso durante todo el año.
Viajaron a muchas comunidades del país, ganando experiencia escénica y generando un diálogo sobre un
tema de mucha importancia y rodeado de tanto
tabú, como es la sexualidad y la prevención del
VIH. Durante todo el año de trabajo, hicieron 70
intervenciones, informando y beneficiando a
5,669 personas con las charlas y 12,279 con los
espectáculos. ¡Gracias Payas@s por el apoyo y el
espacio para crecer!
INTERCAMBIOS
En Julio participamos de un encuentro en Irlanda por tercera vez con
nuestros amigos y amigas de Mayfield - una organización hermana en
Cork. Fue la primera oportunidad para tres jóvenes de viajar en avión,
conocer otros países y presentar lo que creamos frente a jóvenes de
diferentes partes del mundo. Comenzamos el 2010 con la visita de un
grupo de 14 integrantes de Mayfield que se quedarán por tres semanas
viviendo la experiencia de ser parte de la “cotidianeidad Cambalacha”.
Además del intercambio en Irlanda, jóvenes de La Cambalacha viajaron a
El Salvador a un intercambio con TNT (Tiempos Nuevos Teatro). Facilitaron y recibieron talleres, y
profundizaron los conocimientos sobre las luchas que se libraron allí, y las que todavía persisten.
En Octubre recibimos la visita de integrantes del proyecto “Fe y Alegria”. Por 10 días, el grupo de jóvenes
nos acompañó en presentaciones, participó en talleres e intercambiaron técnicas y dinámicas con nosotr@s.
Dos representantes de La Cambalacha, a través de la red NimK´atB´e,
dieron talleres en la comunidad de Nuevo Montecristo, Champerico,
enriqueciéndose del intercambio con una comunidad comprometida con el
desarrollo de su juventud. Y luego, también a través de la red, participaron
en el encuentro de Arte y Transformación que se realizó en la ciudad de
Guatemala, compartiendo nuestra visión sobre interculturalidad con
personas de todo Latinoamérica. A nuestro compañero del gran camino,
Ricardo, le deseamos todo lo mejor en Chile y le agradecemos por la
creación y construcción de NimK´atB´e.
PRESENTACIONES ARTÍSTICAS
Fueron en total 34 presentaciones artísticas presentadas en Santa Cruz L.L;
Panajachel; Ciudad Guatemala; San Juan L.L; San Marcos L.L; San Pedro L.L;
Chimaltenango; Tzununá; San Pablo L.L; Santiago, Atitlán; Barcelona; el país
Vasco; México; e, Irlanda.
Un evento importante en cuanto a presentaciones fue el
Día de la Revolución. L@s jóvenes de la primera
generación tomaron la iniciativa y la responsabilidad de
organizar un evento muy significativo en San Pablo. Acompañados por la segunda
generación de jóvenes, salieron a las calles en una comparsa colorida y llena de energía
a cantar por la Revolución y los derechos humanos.
CLAUSURA
Nuestra Clausura 2009 se celebró en San Marcos y fue todo un éxito, con muchos
colores, música y alegría.

mensajes y creaciones.
L@s más pequeñit@s
tuvieron una actuación muy
especial que logró muchas sonrisas y ternura entre espectadores.
Jóvenes y niñ@s recibieron sus diplomas de reconocimiento por todo el esfuerzo
del año. Cantos como “Gracias a la vida” y “Yo vengo a ofrecer mi corazón”
remarcaron lo que sentimos al finalizar el año en La Cambalacha.
¡GRACIAS A USTEDES! Para terminar, les agradecemos a ustedes por todo el apoyo, el amor, la entrega, la
creatividad y el crecimiento que nos dieron. Hay obstáculos y desafíos, pero saber
que ya somos tant@s creyendo y apostando a lo mismo nos dá la fuerza necesaria
para seguir concretando sueños. Gracias al apoyo económico de ustedes; Art-cion;
Proyecto Payaso y la Embajada de Finlandia; y, nuestros amigos y amigas de La
Bisbal, pudimos dar 363 becas de participación que permitieron a 33 niños, niñas y
jóvenes desarrollarse como artistas y jóvenes líderes. Ellos y ellas, nuestro equipo
permanente (Angela, Lore, Charlie y Gabi), y las miles de personas que participaron
en nuestros programas, les damos las gracias a ustedes por haber hecho posible el 2009. Necesitamos de toda
la ayuda que nos puedan seguir dando para lograr un 2010 aún más exitoso.
Nuestro bello Lago de Atitlán está muy enfermo y queremos montar una obra
educativa para llevar a todas las escuelas donde trabajamos para concientizar a cuantas
personas podamos sobre los dos peores enemigos del lago - fertilizantes químicos y
aguas negras. Cualquier donación que llegue entre enero y abril a través de Paypal en
nuestro sitio - www.lacambalacha.org - será utilizado para el montaje y su
presentación en escuelas.

HAPPY NEW YEAR FRIENDS OF LA CAMBALACHA!
January 2010
As we start this new year, with much wind and sun, we want to tell you about
last semester and what´s coming up in 2010. We hope that this is a year of
peace, health and abundance for you.
YOUTH LEADERS
Our first generation of Youth Leaders completed their three-year process, allowing
space for future generations and opening new paths for themselves in new projects. We
wish them light on their way and hope that we can continue to share creativity and
transformation, and hopefully continue to work together.
The second generation completed their diplomas from the national university, certifying
them as Cultural Promoters. They participated in 345 workshops throughout the year: Scenic and Visual Arts,
Pedagogy, Literature, Cosmovision, Community Leadership Experience, Human Rights, National Current
Affairs, Guatemalan History and Grant-Writing. They worked hard to pass all their exams and we await their
graduation ceremony in the near future. This year they will lead workshops for hundreds of children, and will
be guides for the third generation of Youth Leaders.
RAINBOW GROUP
Our group of 35 children in advanced formation participated in 220
workshops: Dance, Theater, Arts & Crafts, Circus Arts, Storytelling, Music/Singing, Human Rights, Ecology, Reading and
Creative Writing among others. Thirteen of them are now our third
generation of Youth Leaders.
COMMUNITIES
We held 70 after-school workshops in our San Pablo center, with a group of twenty
children. At the end of the year, we invited parents and gave diplomas to our most
committed students.
In the San Juan library, we held 26 workshops with
35 children. It was a space for learning and
exchange, not only for the children, but also for our
volunteers, who have always been received with great enthusiasm by this
community.
We held 75 workshops for 84 children in the San Marcos primary school, 25
children in the San Pablo pre-school, and 363 children in the Tzununá
primary school.
In our open-door workshops, we held 103 workshops for 19 groups, with a total
of 329 participants. We created dances, parades, and plays with the different
groups, whilst extending our outreach to San Pedro, Santa Cruz, Patzún and Santa
Lucía, Ixtahuacán.
THEATER OF THE OPPRESSED
We are working more and more with this inspiring tool:
we began receiving workshops since 2008 and last
semester we started incorporating this method into our
different programs and with other communities. We
have found it to be a powerful and effective method for
transformation through art and look forward to further
exploration and sharing of this work.
VOLUNTEERS
56 people joined our volunteer family this year. They inspired us
and nourished La Cambalacha’s growth by giving workshops,
helping maintain the space, building new spaces, creating, directing,
sewing new costumes, sharing new techniques, and much more.
There was one very special person who was here for the full year,
sharing her incredible energy and unconditional giving:

PROYECTO PAYASO

The first generation of Youth Leaders had an intense year of work with Proyecto Payaso. They travelled to
dozens of communities around the country, gaining valuable stage experience
and generating dialogue around the very
important and taboo subject of sexuality and
HIV/AIDS prevention. They held talks for 5,669
people and performed an educational theater play
for 12,279 people, with a total of 70 interventions.

EXCHANGES
In July, for the third consecutive year, we participated in a youth
encounter in Ireland with our friends from Mayfield Community Arts
Centre - a sister project in Cork. For the youth involved, it was the first
time flying, visiting other countries and presenting their work to young
people from around the world.
We´ve started 2010 with 14 young people from Mayfield who will be
spending three weeks experiencing the Cambalacha day-to-day.
Youth Leaders also travelled to El Salvador to work and learn with TNT
(New Times Theater). They facilitated and received workshops, deepening their understanding of the
struggles of Central America.
In October we hosted a group of students and teachers from Fé y Alegría, an international organization that
works for improving education. They were with us for ten days, accompanying us to performances,
participating in workshops and exchanging ideas and techniques.
Two Youth Leaders, through our Guatemalan network of intercultural art,
NimK´atB´e, gave workshops in Nuevo Montecristo, Champerico, for a
community very dedicated to the development of their youth. Our Youth
Leaders, also through NimK´atB´e, took part in an Art & Transformation
Encounter in Guatemala City, sharing our vision of interculturality with
people from all over Latin America. To Ricardo, our companion and
mentor, we wish all the best in Chile and thank him for creating and
building NimK´atB´e.
PERFORMANCES
We performed 34 times on stages and streets in Santa Cruz LL.; Panajachel;
Ciudad Guatemala; San Juan LL.; San Marcos LL.; San Pedro LL.;
Chimaltenango; Tzununá; San Pablo LL.; Santiago,
Atitlán; Barcelona; the Basque country; México; and,
Ireland.
We held a very special parade for Guatemala’s Day of
the Revolution. First generation Youth Leaders took
the initiative and responsibility for organizing the event. With our other youth
groups, they danced through the streets, singing in remembrance of the Revolution
of 1944 and chanting messages of justice and solidarity.
END OF THE YEAR SHOW
At the end of the year we performed all the songs and dances that we created
during the year in the San
Marcos plaza. It was a happy
success, full of color and
music.
The
youngest
children
performed a very special
circus piece that had the
audience
smiling
and
giggling. We awarded diplomas in recognition of everyone´s effort and hard work
throughout the year. Songs like Gracias a la Vida and Yo Vengo a Ofrecer mi
Corazón expressed our gratitude and our commitment to continue working for
social integration through creative expression.
THANK YOU!
Thank you for all the support, love, creativity and growth that you have given us in
one way or another. There are obstacles and challenges, but knowing that there are
so many of us who believe in this work gives us the strength we need to continue.
Thanks to the economic support from all of your donations and the funding received
from Art-ción; Proyecto Payaso and the Embassy of Finland; and, our friends in La
Bisbal, we were able to provide 363 scholarships which permitted 33 children and
young people to develop as artists and leaders. On their behalf, our behalf (Angela,
Lore, Charlie and Gabi), and the thousands of people who participated in our
programs, we thank you for having made 2009 possible for La Cambalacha. We need all the help you can
give us to make 2010 even better.
Our beautiful Lake Atitlán is very sick with a toxic blue-green algal bloom and we
want to create an educational performance to take to the schools we work with to raise
awareness about the lake´s two worst enemies - chemical fertilizers and untreated
wastewater. All PayPal donations on our website - www.lacambalacha.org - will be
used towards the production and presenting it in local schools.

Saludos desde el Lago Atitlán
¡Hola Amigos y Amigas de La Cambalacha!
Deseándoles mucha alegría, salud y éxitos en sus proyectos - queremos
contarles las noticias de este primer semestre del 2009. Hemos estado, como
siempre, con muchos talleres, espectáculos, emociones, retos y satisfacciones.
¡Graduación!
Celebramos la graduación de nuestra primer generación de 9 Jóvenes Líderes,
quienes recibieron sus diplomas en Animación Cultural de la Escuela Superior de
Artes de la Universidad de San Carlos. Nuestra segunda generación de 8 Jóvenes
Líderes ha terminado el primer semestre del diplomado con cursos completados
en Historia de Guatemala, Planificación y Diseño de Propuestas, Juego Público y
Comparsa, Identidad y Conciencia Corporal, Circo y Danza, Animación Cultural,
y Prácticas Comunitarias. Mil gracias a los compañeros y las compañeras de Caja
Lúdica (www.cajaludica.org) y Escuela Superior de Artes de la USAC quienes
nos han acompañado y apoyado durante este proceso, y quienes hicieron el
enorme trabajo de hacer de este diplomado una realidad que otorga más
oportunidades profesionales a los y las Jóvenes Líderes. Ambas generaciones
trabajaron juntas en el programa Cambalacha en tu Escuela en escuelas de San
Marcos La Laguna, San Pablo La Laguna y Tzununá. Dieron talleres de danza,
canto, cuenta-cuentos y medio-ambiente a centenares de niños y niñas.
Cumplimos 6 años!
El pasado febrero cumplimos 6 años de proyecto y lo festejamos con pasteles,
talleres y una presentación de cada grupo participante. Festejamos también el
maravilloso hecho de que, a pesar de no contar con financiamiento oficial que cubra
la totalidad del proyecto, gracias al apoyo de muchas personas y organizaciones
hermanas podemos llevar a cabo nuestras actividades tal como nos lo propusimos a
comienzo de año. Cerramos nuestros ojos, soplamos las candelas y pedimos el deseo
de muchos años más de arte y transformación social.
Educando por la Vida con Proyecto Payaso
A través de nuestro trabajo con Proyecto Payaso (www.proyectopayaso.org) llegamos
a más de 10,000 jóvenes con talleres y teatro sobre VIH, en varios departamentos del
país. A través de más de 40 presentaciones los y las
jóvenes han adquirido muchísima experiencia escénica que
se ve reflejada en la calidad artística de su trabajo, a la vez
que se han convertido en comunicadores/as alternativos/as para el tema tabú del
VIH/SIDA en las comunidades. Estamos sumamente agradecid@s con nuestr@s
herman@s Payas@s y con la Embajada de Finlandia por permitirnos esta
oportunidad y así poder participar de su gran labor, y por apoyarnos con las becas
de jóvenes participantes.
Conexión y Amistad con Art-ción y Cambalacha en San Sebastian
Nuestras organizaciones hermanas - BandaBat y Art-ción - nos continúan
apoyando, este año en la forma de becas para jóvenes, equipo y material
para el proyecto. En marzo, nuestra co-directora Lorena, viajó al país
Vasco para compartir con niños, niñas y jóvenes de allá talleres de
sensibilización en actividades organizadas por Art-cion y BandaBat.
Durante su visita, se estrenó el documental Luces Escondidas producido
por Pello y David de Art-ción sobre la realidad cotidiana de los y las
Jóvenes Líderes. Al regresar, Lorena mostró el documental a todo el
equipo y fue muy conmovedor ver al grupo de jóvenes verse desde una
perspectiva tan personal y bella en la pantalla. Esperamos que puedan volver pronto al Lago para seguir
compartiendo. Gracias a todos sus esfuerzos, La Cambalacha sigue alcanzando a miles de niños y niñas.

Intercultural
NimK´atB´e
(http://nimkatbe.blogspot.com) - de la cual somos miembro fundador, sigue
fortaleciéndose y haciéndose cada vez más visible a nivel nacional e internacional.
En conjunto con los otros grupos miembros - AIFCAE, Teatro Ventana y Rabinal
Achí - estamos diseñando proyectos muy importantes y emocionantes. Uno de estos
es la creación de un internado para que jóvenes de municipios más lejanos puedan venir a formarse dentro de
nuestro programa de Jóvenes Líderes. Sentimos un gran orgullo de ser parte de esta Gran Red.
Futur@s Líderes
Nuestro grupo de Niños y Niñas Arco Iris se prepara para convertirse en
Jóvenes Arco Iris el año entrante. Esta será la primera generación de niñ@s
en dar este salto. Será una nueva experiencia el formar a jóvenes que tienen
una trayectoria de varios años con el proyecto en los programas infantiles y
quienes claramente muestran mayor desarrollo en sus destrezas y habilidades
artísticas, y un mayor reconocimiento de sus derechos. Algunos de ellos han
participado por los seis años y medio de La Cambalacha.
Compartiendo con las Comunidades
Los grupos del programa Tardes de Creatividad y Amistad llenan los espacios
de alegría y entusiasmo. Este año han participado en una gran diversidad de
talleres - danza, percusión, teatro, canto, artes plásticas, títeres, derechos
humanos, artes circenses, lúdica y escritura creativa - impartidos por Jóvenes
Líderes y voluntari@s. Agradecemos a Israel, coordinador de la biblioteca
comunitaria de San Juan, por permitirnos este espacio para trabajar con la
niñez Juanera. Actualmente son alrededor de 50 los niños y las niñas quienes
vienen por las tardes a participar en los programas de La Cambalacha en San
Marcos, San Juan y San Pablo. Este último se ha ido fortaleciendo desde principio de año gracias al constante
liderazgo de uno de los jóvenes, se ha mejorado la infraestructura y hoy ya hay un grupo fijo de 17
participantes pableños y pableñas mostrando compromiso y entusiasmo con el programa.
Compartiendo Nuestra Metodología
Este año hemos comenzado con algo que era parte de nuestro sueño: capacitar a maestros y maestras locales.
En mayo dimos la primera capacitación a 14 maestros y maestras de distintas comunidades, en un día
completo, diverso e intenso de talleres. Por otra parte, un grupo de Jóvenes Líderes fue convocado por una
organización hermana de Patzún, Chimaltenango, para dar talleres y capacitar a más jóvenes. Esperamos que
éste sea sólo el comienzo de un camino de integración e intercambio entre quienes trabajamos por la
educación activa e integral.
Nuestra Familia Itinerante
Este semestre hemos contado con la presencia de más de 30 voluntari@s
de diferentes países quienes han venido a participar en el trabajo
educativo, administrativo, de mantenimiento, de la huerta y en la
producción artística. En lo que va del año hemos hecho cuatro diferentes
espectáculos para recaudar fondos para el proyecto. Además de
ayudarnos económicamente, esta producción constante nos ha brindado
el espacio para seguirnos desarrollando como artistas. Ashleigh es
nuestra voluntaria residente del 2009. Está por un año completo y
haciendo un trabajo maravilloso de coordinación de programas y
facilitación de talleres. Gracias a su dedicación y gran amor por el
proyecto y l@s niñ@s, Ashleigh está expandiendo nuestro alcance a
nuevos grupos participantes. Actualmente está dirigiendo una
coreografía con un grupo de pequeñit@s de la aldea Chuasanaí, nuestro
primer grupo participante de San Pedro La Laguna.
¡Viva el Circo!
En enero recibimos a la directora de Salida Circus - Jennifer Dempsey - una mujer
extraordinaria con mucha energía y casi tres décadas de experiencia en el circo. Nos
enseñó a volar en su trapecio y nos está promocionando a través de artículos y
nominaciones a premios. Agradecemos a nuestro querido amigo Tom Russell, por haber
facilitado el encuentro con Jennifer y por todo el apoyo que nos da. En mayo recibimos a
otro circo muy talentoso - Runaway Circus - que vino a compartir divertidos talleres de
circo y a presentar un espectáculo increíble que la comunidad disfrutó mucho.
Teatro Transformador
Jóvenes Líderes participaron en talleres de Teatro del Oprimido y Teatro Foro con amig@s de AIFCAE
(http://labanquetaz1.blogspot.com) y Zapayasos de Chiapas, México. Ambas experiencias fueron intensas y
de mucho aprendizaje. Queremos seguir profundizando estas experiencias para compartirlas con otros grupos
juveniles, ya que son poderosas herramientas para la participación y reflexión social.
Arts Encounter
Este año, por tercera vez consecutiva, viaja una delegación de jóvenes a
compartir presentaciones, comparsas y talleres con la organización hermana
en Cork, Irlanda Mayfield Community Arts Centre (www.mayfieldarts.org).
Gracias a todo el equipo de Mayfield por organizar estos encuentros entre
jóvenes de diferentes países y diversas culturas. Viajar tan lejos y conocer
lugares tan distintos a los propios es una experiencia invaluable.
La Comunidad Crece
Lorena ya terminó la construcción de su casa de bambú,
una estructura simple y hermosa. Hayley (Australia),
Ashleigh (EEUU) y Bill (Nueva Zelanda) también se
unen a nuestra comunidad en expansión, comprando
terreno aquí al ladito y con muchos deseos de volver
pronto y ser parte de esta Cambafamilia.
Nuestros Retos
En nuestros seis años de trayectoria nos enfrentamos a diversos desafíos.
Hay uno actualmente que nos preocupa en particular: muchas niñas de 15
años de las comunidades donde trabajamos deciden juntarse (lo que
equivale al matrimonio) como respuesta a la represión que experimentan
en sus hogares. Por la falta de información, la mayoría queda embarazada
sin planificarlo. A partir de ese momento, las posibilidades de estudiar o
seguir desarrollándose son casi nulas. A pesar de las pláticas y talleres que hemos dado sobre temas de
derechos y sexualidad, este año, 4 de las 11 participantes mujeres que
comenzaron el año, han dejado el proyecto por este motivo. Nos preocupa ver
que todavía el trabajo de sensibilización no logra cambiar esa dura realidad. Por
otro lado, contamos con dos participantes que, a pesar de haberse juntado,
incluso una de ellas embarazada, han seguido participando, presentándose como
un ejemplo alternativo frente a sus comunidades. Estos desafíos sólo nos
impulsan a seguir con nuestra tarea y a profundizar nuestra conciencia sobre su
importancia y urgencia.

Este año ya tuvieron lugar 2 fiestas para recaudar fondos para el proyecto:
una organizada por Robin y otra por Natania y Shauna, las tres, voluntarias
que estuvieron hace más de dos años con nosotr@s. Nos emociona
enormemente ver que la relación y el apoyo continúan a pesar del tiempo y
la distancia.

Hello Friends of La Cambalacha!
As we wish you joy, health and success in your current endeavors, let us fill you
in on the first half of 2009. We have been as busy as ever with many workshops,
shows, emotions, challenges and successes.
Graduation!
We celebrated the graduation of our first generation of nine Youth Leaders, who
received their diplomas in Cultural Animation from the Superior School of the
Arts of the University of San Carlos. And our second generation of eight Youth
Leaders finished their diploma’s first semester, completing courses in
Guatemalan History, Planning and Design of Project Proposals, Public
Celebration and Parading, Corporal Identity and Consciousness, Circus and
Dance, Cultural Animation and Community Service. Many thanks to all of our friends at Caja Lúdica
(www.cajaludica.org) and the Superior School of the Arts of USAC, who have
supported us throughout and worked tirelessly to make the diploma program a
reality, opening up more professional opportunities to the Youth Leaders. Both
generations of Youth Leaders worked together in the program “Cambalacha in
Your School” in San Marcos La Laguna, San Pablo La Laguna and Tzununá.
They facilitated workshops for hundreds of children in dance, singing, storytelling and environmental awareness.
We celebrated our 6th Birthday!
In February, the project completed 6 years of existence! We celebrated with cakes of
course, as well as special workshops and a festive presentation by each participating
group. We also celebrated the marvelous fact that in spite of the lack of official
financial support to cover the totality of the project, we have been able to carry out our
activities just as we proposed at the beginning of the year – with the continual support
of many individuals and small organizations. We close our eyes, blow out the candles
and wish for many more years of art and social transformation.
Promoting Life with Proyecto Payaso
In collaboration with Proyecto Payaso (www.proyectopayaso.org), La Cambalacha
reached more than 10,000 youth and adults in numerous
departments of Guatemala through theatrical presentations
and workshops on HIV/AIDS. After more than 40
presentations, the Youth Leaders gained significant stage
experience, which is reflected in the artistic quality of their
work. At the same time, they have become leaders of alternative education by
breaking the taboo that HIV/AIDS still is in Guatemala. We are immensely
grateful to our brother and sister clowns and the Embassy of Finland for allowing
us the opportunity to participate in their tremendous and important work and for providing the scholarships
of the Youth Leaders this year.
Friendship and Connection with Art-ción in San Sebastian
Our sister organizations – BandaBat and Art-ción – continue to support us
generously, this year in the form of youth scholarships, tools and materials. In
March, our co-director, Lorena, traveled to the Basque Country to share with
youth and children in numerous workshops organized by Art-ción and
BandaBat. Lorena attended the premiere of Luces Escondidas, a documentary
produced by Pello and David of Art-ción, which explores the lives of the
Youth Leaders. When she returned, Lorena showed the documentary to the
whole team: it was incredibly moving to see this group of young people see
themselves from such a personal point of view on the screen. We hope that our friends from Art-ción return
to the lake soon to continue sharing with us! Thanks to all your huge efforts, La Cambalacha continues to
reach thousands of children. Thank you!
Networking
The
Guatemalan
Network
of
Intercultural
Art–NimK´atB´e
(http://nimkatbe.blogspot.com), of which La Cambalacha is a founding member,
continues growing stronger and becoming ever more visible on both the national and
international stage. Together with the other network members –AIFCAE, Teatro
Ventana y Rabinal Achi – we are designing many important and exciting projects.
One of these projects is the creation of a boarding school so that young people from more distant
municipalities can participate in our artistic development program, Jóvenes Líderes. We feel proud to be a
part of this great network.
Future Leaders
Our original group of Rainbow Children is growing up fast and preparing to
become Rainbow Youth in 2010. This will be the first generation of children
to take this step. Some of these students have been a part of La Cambalacha
programs during the 6½ years of our existence. It will be a new experience to
work with youth who have been a part of our children’s programs and who
therefore have more developed artistic abilities and greater recognition of
their rights as children.
Sharing with Lakeside Communities
The children who gather for Afternoons of Creativity and Friendship fill their
workshop spaces with joy and enthusiasm. This year, they have participated in a
large variety of workshops – dance, percussion, theatre, song, arts and crafts,
puppetry, human rights, circus arts, creative writing and games - facilitated by
Youth Leaders and volunteers. We thank Israel, the coordinator of the Library of
San Juan La Laguna, for allowing us this space to work with the youth of San
Juan LL. Currently, there are about 50 boys and girls who regularly come to our
afternoon programs in San Marcos LL, San Pablo LL and San Juan LL. Thanks to the leadership of one of
our Youth Leaders and recent improvements to our workspace there, we are delighted to have a regular group
of 17 children from San Pablo LL, who show great dedication and enthusiasm for the program.
Sharing our Methodology
This year we began doing what has been a key part of our vision from the outset: training local teachers. In
May, we gave a one-day intensive training, with a variety of creative workshops, to a group of 14 teachers
from various communities. Also, a group of our Youth Leaders were contracted by a sister organization in
Patzún, Chimaltenango to give workshops and train more youth leaders. We hope that this is only the
beginning of a journey of integration and exchange between all who work for progressive and holistic
education.
Our Itinerant Family
So far this year we have welcomed 30 volunteers from diverse countries,
who have come to help in educational and administrative work,
maintenance and gardening tasks, and in artistic production. We have
presented four different artistic performances that generated funds for the
project. Along with helping us economically, these performances have
offered us a space to continue developing ourselves as artists. Ashleigh,
our resident volunteer of 2009, is here for the entire year and doing a
marvelous job coordinating programs and facilitating workshops. Thanks
to her dedication and deep love for the project and the children, Ashleigh
is broadening our reach to new participating groups. She is currently
choreographing for a group of youngsters from the Chuasanaí village,
our first participating group from San Pedro La Laguna.
Long Live the Circus!
In January, we welcomed the director of Salida Circus – Jennifer Dempsey – an
extraordinary woman with incredible energy and nearly three decades’ experience in
the circus. She taught us how to fly on the trapeze and she continues to promote us
through articles and nominations for awards. We thank our dear friend, Tom Russell,
for having made possible our friendship with Jennifer and for all of the support he
gives. In May, we received another hugely talented circus troupe – Runaway Circus –
who gave fun circus workshops and presented a fantastic show that the community
thoroughly enjoyed.
Transformational Theatre
The Youth Leaders participated in workshops of Theater of the Oppressed with friends from AIFCAE
(http://labanquetaz1.blogspot.com) and Zapayasos from Chiapas, Mexico. Both experiences were intense and
full of learning. We would like to continue a more in-depth study of this type of theatre so that we can share
it with other youth groups, especially given how powerful a tool it can be for encouraging social participation
and reflection.
Arts Encounter
This year, for the third year in a row, a delegation of Cambalacha youth
travelled to Cork, Ireland to share presentations, workshops and parades with
our
sister
organization,
Mayfield
Community
Arts
Center
(www.mayfieldarts.org). A big thanks to the whole Mayfield team for
organizing these gatherings of young people from different countries and
diverse cultures. As we all know, traveling and getting to know places far
from home can be an invaluable learning experience!
The Community Grows
Lorena just finished building her bamboo home, a
simple and beautiful structure. Hayley (Australia),
Ashleigh (USA), and Bill (New Zealand) also join our
expanding community, buying land just next door and
feeling very excited to return and be a part of the
Cambalacha family.
Our Challenges
In our six-year trajectory, we have confronted various challenges.
Currently, there is one challenge in particular that worries us: many 15
year-old girls of the communities where we work decide to run off with a
boyfriend (equivalent to getting married) as a solution to the repression
they experience in their homes. Furthermore, due to a lack of information
and support, the majority winds up pregnant – unplanned - soon after.
From this moment on, the possibilities of studying and continuing one’s personal development are virtually
non-existent. In spite of the talks and workshops we have given concerning personal rights and sexuality,
four of the eleven participating women that began the year with us have left the
project for this reason. It worries us that the process of sensitization still does not
succeed in changing this difficult reality. On the other hand, we count among us
two students who, in spite of their getting married, and one of them getting
pregnant, are continuing their study and work with us, presenting a strong
alternative in their communities. These challenges only drive us to continue our
work and further our understanding of their importance and urgency.

¡Hola Amigas y Amigos de La Cambalacha y Feliz Año Nuevo! Esperamos que estén
content@s con el año que pasó y con mucha energía y proyectos para empezar el que
viene. Ya terminamos el 2008 y después de un merecido descanso, nos preparamos
para el 2009. Queremos compartir con ustedes lo que nos pasó en estos últimos seis
meses.
Nuestra participación en Irlanda a fin de julio fue muy exitosa, los jóvenes
facilitaron un taller de comparsa a los y las participantes del encuentro y el
resultado fue una comparsa de casi 100 personas en las calles de Cork,
Irlanda,
llenándolas
de
color,
participación
y
alegría
(http://web.mac.com/mayfieldartscentre/globalfest).
La
relación
con
Mayfield Community Arts Centre (www.mayfieldarts.org ) se fortalece cada
vez más y el cariño sembrado en su estadía en San Marcos se sintió en
nuestra visita en Irlanda. Esperamos que la relación siga y crezca.
La Cambalacha participó en otros encuentros internacionales en Honduras y El Salvador, ampliando nuestras
relaciones interinstituacionales, compartiendo conocimientos y vivenciando experiencias inolvidables.
En julio también fueron las olimpiadas de gimnasia rítmica (gran evento en el lago) y l@s niñ@s de San
Marcos ganaron el primer lugar (que luego se convirtió en primer lugar de todo el departamento de Sololá).
El mes de agosto resaltó por su productividad e intensidad. Tuvimos la
presencia de “Art-ción Atitlán” (http://artcion-atitlan.blogspot.com ),
un grupo de voluntari@s de el país Vasco y Catalunya que nos conoció
dos años atrás, se comprometió a regresar y así lo hizo. Su presencia en
La Cambalacha fue muy importante para tod@s, y dejó marcas
importantes. Tuvimos talleres muy valiosos de: títeres, recursos web
(pueden
visitar
el
blog
que
crearon
l@s
jóvenes:
(www.lucesescondidas.blogspot.com), medioambiente, inglés y
expresión y gesto. Además, hicieron un gran trabajo de documentación
- que ojalá pronto se convierta en un documental del proyecto - y
ayudaron muchísimo en la construcción de nuevos espacios.
Terminaron su estadía con una muestra de todas las creaciones en la que a
más de uno se nos cayeron lágrimas por la intensidad del encuentro y la
despedida. Nos inspiraron, estimularon, ayudaron a crear y crecer…
muchas gracias! .. y como si toda esa ayuda e intercambio hubiesen sido
poco, al regresar a sus hogares siguieron gestionando fondos y ¡¡lograron
un programa de apadrinamiento y un financiamiento de 11.000 euros para
el 2009!! Esto es una ayuda muy importante para cubrir el 2009, y nos hace
creer aún más en la gestión compartida entre tod@s l@s que queremos ver
a La Cambalacha continuar y crecer. ¡Gracias Art-ción!
Además de los talleres que recibieron, el grupo de Jóvenes Líderes (EA) tuvo por seis
semanas, espacio para proyectos personales. Cada participante tenía 2 tardes a la
semana para dedicar a un proyecto de su elección y de forma individual. Planificaron,
gestionaron, presentaron y evaluaron. Fueron muy profesionales y originales, sus
proyectos fueron: recopilación de cuentos locales y su ilustración, composición de
canciones originales en español y kakchikel, creación de un monólogo, una pieza
teatral, un unipersonal de Clown, composiciones coreográficas, encuesta a la
población de San Marcos, y dirección de la banda local. La satisfacción al ver los
proyectos finalizados fue grandísima, demostraron tener ya las herramientas necesarias
para dirigir y crear espacios artísticos y hacerlo con creatividad y confianza… ¡Bravo!
Otra faceta interesante de los talleres este año fue un taller de fotografía que
hicieron los grupos de jóvenes con Kerry, una voluntaria irlandesa que gestionó
una cámara de fotos para cada participante, más los rollos de fotos y el costo de los
revelados. Semana a semana recibían una consigna diferente para tomar fotos y el
resultado fue una exposición a fin de año, muy rica en imágenes y calidad, y una
selección de postales que se vendieron como pan caliente. Gracias Kerry por tu
dedicación y apoyo y a Restaurante Il Giardino por el espacio para la exposición.
Y muchísimas gracias a tod@s l@s voluntari@s que nos apoyaron este año, (99 en total, de 23 países
diferentes), que hicieron posible el intercambio, el crecimiento y la sensación de familia (y a veces - claro la bulla, la intensidad, las situaciones “diferentes” y el desorden), pero sobre todo - hicieron posible la
existencia de La Cambalacha en el 2008. ¡Abrazos a toda la familia!
Septiembre es el mes de la independencia y muchísimas presentaciones en los pueblos. Nos presentamos en
San Pablo, San Marcos y San Juan con comparsas y diferentes coreografías, en un día que duró mas de 12
horas de actividad. Terminamos exhaust@s y content@s.
Terminamos la participación en las escuelas, habiendo cumplido con lo programado: trabajamos en 5
escuelas, en 4 comunidades diferentes (Tzununá, San Pablo, Santa Clara y Paquip), llegando con 5 talleres
diferentes a 2,226 niñ@s. Fue un gran desafío a veces, pero siempre un hermoso y gratificante compartir con
l@s niñ@s.
En octubre, cuando ya nos organizábamos para cerrar el año un poco temprano por
falta de fondos, empezamos el trabajo en conjunto con Proyecto Payaso
(www.proyectopayaso.org ), un proyecto hermano que trabaja por la prevención de
VIH Sida a través de payasos y charlas interactivas facilitadas por l@s jóvenes.
En dos fuertes meses de trabajo, montamos una obra de payasos y prevención de VIH,
tuvimos capacitaciones sobre el tema y cómo facilitarlo, y nos acostumbramos a
hablar de temas importantes que un mes atrás eran bastante tabú.
Hasta diciembre l@s jóvenes presentaron la obra y facilitaron charlas en San Marcos, San Pablo, San Juan,
San Pedro, Guastatoya (El Progreso) y Livingston (Izabal). Adquirieron mucha experiencia escénica y
didáctica, y salieron a días agotadores de presentaciones y viajes, mostrando mucha madurez,
responsabilidad y calidad artística.
Proyecto Payaso nos apoyó para cubrir las becas de l@s Jóvenes Líderes en octubre y noviembre y así
pudimos trabajar hasta el 4 de diciembre – algo muy importante, ya que en un momento de crisis económica,
pensamos que tendríamos que parar actividades en octubre. Seguiremos en esta magnífica relación con
Proyecto Payaso en el 2009 también. ¡Gracias por la confianza Payasos!
Noviembre fue el mes de cerrar los ciclos con todos los grupos y presentar
parte de nuestras creaciones en la Clausura Final. Este año la hicimos en San
Pablo a fines de Noviembre y se presentaron todos los grupos fijos del
Proyecto: Jóvenes Líderes - EA, Jóvenes Arco Iris - JAI, Niñ@s Arco Iris –
NAI, y el grupo de niñ@s de la sede en San Pablo.
Fue muy emocionante vernos a tod@s en el escenario - un total de casi 90
participantes de San Marcos y San Pablo, más una de Santa Cruz. Las
playeras rojas brillaron al sol y con ellas nuestra emoción, orgullo y fé en
lo que hacemos. También fue la primera vez que el grupo de la sede de
San Pablo participara en una presentación de La Cambalacha - fue muy
bonito ver su emoción y compromiso en el proceso. Este grupo llegó a
tener casi 40 niñ@s y 20 de ell@s fueron constantes todo el año,
afianzando este espacio, abierto hace tan sólo un año.
En noviembre recibimos la aprobación final de todos los trámites para el
diplomado en Animación que hacemos con la universidad de San Carlos a través
de Caja Lúdica (www.cajaludica.org). Luego de muchísimo papeleo y trabajo, en
enero del 2009 ocho jóvenes recibirán su diploma y a fin de año, otra generación
más lo hará. Así, el proceso de La Cambalacha recibe una legitimación
académica, que esperamos les sirva para el futuro. ¡Muchas gracias hermanos y
hermanas de la Caja Lúdica – por un trabajo de muchos años de esfuerzo y
dedicación!
Y hablando de cuestiones académicas, felicitamos a Nacho por completar
su primer año de la licenciatura en Artes Escénicas en la Universidad
Landivar. Trabajó duro para conseguirlo y para adaptarse a la ciudad, lo
felicitamos por lograrlo y le deseamos éxito en el próximo año. Le
agradecemos a nuestra red NimK’atB´e (http://nimkatbe.blogspot.com) por
otorgarle la beca y a AIFCAE (http://labanquetaz1.blogspot.com), por
apoyar a La Cambalacha a través de los años.
Y llegó diciembre, terminamos el año como lo empezamos, con un
intercambio de jóvenes. Esta vez vinieron de la Asociación Renovación
de Colombia y compartimos dos días de experiencias y talleres, con la
casa llena. Angela – nuestra amada cocinera y mamá adoptiva - se pudo
operar gracias a la colaboración de much@s de ustedes.
Y claro, teníamos que hacer algo en las vacaciones, entonces
fortalecimos otra faceta de La Cambalacha - los proyectos de ecología,
permacultura y construcción alternativa. Charlie coordinó un exitoso
curso introductorio a la construcción alternativa, al que vinieron
participantes de varias partes del mundo, y que desarrolla esa parte de nuestra vida aquí. Este año contamos
con un voluntario “verde” que ayuda a cultivar las huertas y jardines, e impulsa a más voluntari@s verdes a
venir, aprender y trabajar en esas áreas. Así que cualquier persona interesada en ese programa puede
contactarse con nosotr@s y le daremos más información.
En síntesis, el 2008 fue un año de mucho esfuerzo, crecimiento y
desafíos. Para expresarlo en números, en el programa “Katok Pa´”
trabajamos con 463 participantes, en “Tardes de creatividad y Amistad”
con 127, en “Cambalacha en tu Escuela” con 2,226, en “Proyecto
Payaso” con 139, en “Niñ@s Arco Iris” con 50, y en “Jóvenes Arco Iris”
con 19. Trabajamos con un total de 3,024 participantes. Hicimos 42
presentaciones, compartimos con 99 voluntari@s de 23 países,
trabajamos en 11 comunidades diferentes, participamos en 3 encuentros
internacionales, tuvimos 27
talleres diferentes con de
Teatro, Teatro del oprimido, Ballet, Salsa, Capoeira, Acrobacia,
Yoga, Artes Marciales, Fabricación de Máscaras Gigantes, Danza
Hindú, Teatro de Títeres, Educación Ambiental, Animación Digital,
Recursos Web, Sexualidad y Afectividad, Pedagogía, Danza Aérea,
Canto, Música, Artes Plásticas, Mural, Fotografía, Inglés,
Cuentacuentos, Filosofia, Historia de Guatemala y Cosmovisión
Maya. A pesar de estar cansad@s al final del año, podemos decir
que logramos mucho más de lo esperado en un año como éste, que
empezamos y terminamos sin ningún financiamiento oficial.
Queremos agradecer especialmente a María y Kamila por toda su ayuda
y amor en el 2008 y a las diferentes personas y organizaciones quienes
hacen posible el 2009 para La Cambalacha a través de su apoyo en
gestión y donaciones: Art-cion, Proyecto Payaso, ACE, BandaBat –
Rafa y Dinora, Ayuntamiento de San Sebastian, Biel y el Ayuntamiento
de La Bisbal de Ampordan, Martin Gross y Life for the Children,
Ashleigh, Robin, Tom y Jenny. Son amigos y amigas quienes han
asegurado el 70% de los costos operativos – becas, transporte y

Hello Friends of La Cambalacha and a Happy New Year! We hope that you are
all happy with your past year’s work and feeling energized to begin the projects
this year will bring. We finished our final projects of 2008 at the end of
November and, after a well-deserved rest, are preparing for 2009. Here’s a roundup of all the most important events of the last six months in La Cambalacha.
Our participation in workshops in Ireland at the end of July was very successful. La Cambalacha youth
facilitated a workshop on street performance and parades to the conference
participants. The result was a parade of nearly 100 people on the streets of
Cork,
Ireland,
full
of
color
and
joy
(http://web.mac.com/mayfieldartscentre/globalfest). Our relationship with
Mayfield Community Arts Center (www.mayfieldarts.org) goes from
strength to strength. The friendship and affection that began during
Mayfield’s stay in San Marcos La Laguna bloomed even more during our
visit to Ireland, where we were welcomed with open arms and open hearts.
We hope that the relationship continues to grow.
La Cambalacha also participated in other international exchanges in Honduras and El Salvador,
expanding our inter-institutional relationships, and sharing knowledge and unforgettable experiences.
In July, we took part in the local dance competitions, which is a big event around Lake Atitlán. The
children of San Marcos won first place among the lakeside communities and then went on to win first
place out of all the participants in Sololá.
Our month of August is best described as productive and intense. We had
the presence of “Art-ción Atitlán” (http://artcion-atitlan.blogspot.com), a
group of volunteers from Catalunya and the Basque country who were
fulfilling a promise to return to the lake after a first visit to La Cambalacha
nearly two years previously. Their presence here was very important for us
all and they made a big impact on us. They gave valuable workshops:
puppets, animated film-making, web resources (check out the Youth
Leaders’ blog at: www.lucesescondidas.blogspot.com), environmental
education, English, and corporal expression. Moreover, the volunteers dedicated lots of energy to
documenting the workshops and life of La Cambalacha – which will hopefully become a documentary
about Art-cion and La Cambalacha in the near future. Our friends from Catalunya and the Basque
country also helped tirelessly in the construction of new community spaces.
They ended their stay with a presentation of all the workshop creations in
which more than one of us were moved to tears by the encounter and
farewell. The presence of these volunteers inspired us, encouraged us, and
helped us to create and to grow... thank you very much Art-cion! And as
if all that they shared with La Cambalacha during their stay wasn’t
enough, they returned to their homes and continued to fundraise and
managed to earn a program of sponsorship and funding of € 11,000 for
2009! This is an invaluable help to cover the costs of 2009 and makes us
believe even more in the value of shared fundraising between all of us who feel inspired by Cambalacha
life and want to help the project continue and grow. Thanks again Art-ción!
This year we created a space for Youth Leader personal project for which they devote
two afternoons a week to an individual project of their choosing. The students
planned, managed, submitted and evaluated their projects, which were both
professional and original. Their projects included: an illustrated collection of local
stories as told by the elders of San Marcos, original songs in Spanish and Kakchikel,
the creation and presentation of a monologue, a short theatre piece, a one-man Clown
show, choreographies, a survey of San Marcos’ adults’ views on youth and society,
and the direction of a local group of young musicians. The satisfaction of seeing the
completed projects was enormous. The youth shown that they have what it takes to
lead others, create art and to do it with originality, confidence and skill. Congratulations!
Another successful workshop was a photography project facilitated by
Kerry, an Irish volunteer who managed to collect a 35mm camera for each
participant and also raised funds for rolls of film and the cost of
development. Week after week, the students received a different theme to
guide them in taking pictures. This culminated in a photography exhibition
at the end of the year, with fabulous images rich in both content and
quality. We created a selection of postcards that sold like hotcakes in the
village. Kerry, thanks for your dedication and support! And thank you,
Il Giardino restaurant, for generously hosting the photo exhibition.
And many thanks to all of the volunteers who supported us this year (99 in total, from 23 different
countries), who made possible the exchange, growth and sense of family that we celebrate in La
Cambalacha. (And sometimes - of course - the racket, the intensity, the "interesting" situations and
disorder!) We thank all of the volunteers who share with us, above all, for making the very existence of
La Cambalacha possible in 2008. Big hugs to the whole family!
September is the month in which Guatemala celebrates its independence, which means lots of
celebrations in the villages. We presented different choreographies in San Pablo, San Marcos and San
Juan and joined the parade in the streets of San Pablo. One of these days of celebration and sharing
included over 12 hours of non-stop activity. We finished exhausted and satisfied.
We finished directing workshops in local schools, having completed the full program of activities that we
had planned earlier in the year. In total this year we worked in five schools in four different communities
(Tzununá, San Pablo, Santa Clara and Paquip) and shared five different artistic workshops with 2,226
children. It was challenging at times, but always a beautiful and rewarding experience.
In October we began working closely with Proyecto Payaso
(www.proyectopayaso.org), a sister organization working for the prevention of
HIV/AIDS through clowning and interactive presentations facilitated by Youth
Leaders.
With two months of heavy work, we assembled a clowning presentation on the
prevention of HIV. We learnt all about AIDS and HIV, and also how to facilitate
workshops focused on this sensitive topic. By the end, we learned to talk openly
about important issues that, a month ago, were quite taboo.
During the whole month of November, the Youth Leaders travelled with Proyecto Payaso to present their
clowning piece and HIV/AIDS talks in San Marcos, San Pablo, San Juan, San Pedro, Guastatoya
(Progreso) and Livingston (Izabal). During this time, the youth gained valuable experience both teaching
and acting. They finished grueling days of presentations and tours, showing great maturity, responsibility
and artistic integrity.
Proyecto Payaso helped us to cover the scholarships of our Youth Leaders in
October and November, which enabled us to work until December 4 - something
truly unexpected, since in this time of economic crisis we thought we would have
to stop activities in October. We will continue this excellent relationship with
Proyecto Payaso in 2009 as well. Thank you for your support Payasos!
November was the month in which we closed the year’s cycle with all
the La Cambalacha children by presenting some of our creations in our
regular end of year show. This year we celebrated the show in San
Pablo in late November, where all of Cambalacha’s select groups
presented the year’s productions: Youth Leaders, Rainbow Youth,
Rainbow Children and the children from our San Pablo center. It was
thrilling to see all of the children on stage - a total of nearly 90
participants from San Marcos and San Pablo, plus one from Santa Cruz.
The red Cambalacha t-shirts shone brightly in the sun and with them,
our excitement, pride and faith in what we do. It was also the first time that the children from the San
Pablo center took part in a Cambalacha presentation - it was gratifying to see their excitement and
commitment. This group grew to be almost 40 children, of which 20 were constant in their attendance
throughout the year, affirming our dedication to the new center, opened just a year ago.
Eight Cambalacha Youth Leaders passed their Diploma in Cultural
Animation which we have been working on with The University of San
Carlos and Caja Lúdica (www.cajaludica.org). After tireless dedication in
artistic workshops and mountains of paperwork, later this month eight
young people will receive their diplomas; and at the end of this year,
another generation will follow. Thus, La Cambalacha’s artistic
development process receives legitimate academic standing, which we
hope will serve La Cambalacha youth in the future. Thank you brothers
and sisters of Caja Lúdica - for many years of work and dedication!
Speaking of academic issues, we congratulate Nacho for completing the first
year of his Bachelor of Performing Arts at Landivar University. He worked
hard to earn a place at the University and to adapt to the hustle and bustle of
city life. We wish you further success in the coming year and thank the
network of intercultural art, NimK'atB'e (http://nimkatbe.blogspot.com), for
providing
Nacho’s
scholarship.

Come December, the year ended just as it began: with a youth exchange. This
time, friends came from the Renovación Association of Colombia and we shared
two days of rich experiences and workshops with the full house. Also in
December, with the invaluable support of many volunteers, Angela - our beloved
cook and adoptive mother – underwent a long overdue operation and has already
recovered brilliantly. She sends a big thank you to all who helped.
And, of course, we had to do something during the holidays! We poured our joint efforts into another
facet of La Cambalacha and focused on projects in organic gardening and green building. Charlie, the
technical director of La Cambalacha, coordinated a successful introductory course in building with
bamboo and natural materials to participants from all over the world and, in the process, enriched that
part of our life here. This year too we have Shad, our first long-term “green” volunteer who is helping us
design and build a productive and beautiful organic garden and nursery; he coordinates and teaches
volunteers who come to learn and work in these areas and has already transformed La Cambalacha’s
gardens. Anyone interested in this program please contact us and we will gladly tell you more.
Summing up, 2008 was a year of great effort, growth and
challenges. To put it into numbers, our "Katok Pa” program
worked with 463 participants; "Afternoons of Creativity and
Friendship " with 127; “Cambalacha in Your School” reached an
incredible 2226, and our clowning project with Proyecto Payaso
reached 139; "Rainbow Children" program reached 50; and the
“Rainbow Youth” totalled 19. We worked with a grand total of
3,024 participants and performed 42 presentations, we shared with
99 volunteers from 23
countries, worked in 11
different communities and participated in 3 international meetings.
We had workshops on 27 different themes: Theater, Theater of the
Oppressed, Ballet, Salsa, Capoeira, Acrobatics, Yoga, Martial
Arts, Giant Masks, Hindu dance, Puppetry, Environmental
Education, Digital Animation, Web Resources, Sexuality and
Emotional Health, Education, Aerial Dance, Singing, Music,
Murals, Photography, English, Storytelling, Philosophy, History of
Guatemala and Mayan Cosmology. Despite feeling exhausted by
the end of the year, we can say we achieved much much more than
we ever expected we would in a year that began and ended without any official funding.
We want to give a very special thanks to María and Kamila, for all
their help and love in 2008 and to the different organizations and
individuals whose fundraising support is making 2009 possible for
La Cambalacha: Art-cion, Proyecto Payaso, ACE, BandaBat – Rafa
and Dinora, Ayuntamiento de San Sebastian, Biel and
Ayuntamiento de La Bisbal de Ampordan, Martin Gross and Life
for the Children, Ashleigh, Robin, Tom and Jenny. These friends
have already secured 70% of La Cambalacha´s operational costs for

Hola Amigos y Amigas de La Cambalacha!
Esperamos que estén todos y todas muy bien,
gozando de la vida y realizando sueños.
Pasó otro medio año y aquí estamos, en medio
de las lluvias, contándoles de nuestras
novedades. Este es un año especial.
La Cambalacha cumplió 5 años!! Y lo festejamos con
actividades en la sede de San Marcos, 5 pasteles – uno por cada
año - y muchos deseos de crecimiento y felicidad. También
hicimos una fiesta en “La Paz” para recaudar fondos, en la que
hicimos varias presentaciones y recibimos mucho apoyo (moral
más que todo) de la familia de San Marcos.
Este año lo empezamos con emociones de todo tipo, con la
incertidumbre de no tener financiamiento, la alegría de agrandar
nuestros grupos Arco Iris, y el intercambio con un grupo de 12
irlandeses que vinieron por tres semanas a compartir con
nosotr@s. Ell@s continuaron con el intercambio que empezó en
Enero del 2007 cuando viajaron Manacés y Juanita a Nicaragua,
organizado por Mayfield Community Arts Center (el proyecto
irlandés) y continuó con el viaje a Irlanda en Junio del 2007.
Estuvieron en Enero por tres semanas con
nosotr@s, convivieron con l@s jóvenes,
participaron de talleres y comparsas y
pintaron junt@s un mural en la escuela de
párvulos. La experiencia fue buenísima para
tod@s, se divirtieron, compartieron y se
conocieron como jóvenes que aunque viven
de diferentes partes del mundo, lograron
crear un idioma común. Cuatro de los
adultos que vinieron con ell@s se quedaron
como voluntari@s por tres meses más,
fortaleciendo muchísimo al vínculo y
aportando mucho al proyecto, sobre todo en
lo que refiere a reciclaje y creaciones con
papel mache.

La última etapa de este intercambio está
sucediendo estos días, en los que Moisés, Gaspar,
Santos y Lore están en Irlanda, siendo la tercera
vez que La Cambalacha viaja para presentar sus
creaciones, participar del intercambio y facilitar
talleres. Ver que se dan estas oportunidades de
conocer y crecer nos emociona cada vez, y ver las
caras de los jóvenes al subir al avión o al llegar a
un país diferente, da una sensación de alegría y
satisfacción muy grandes.
Recibimos una donación muy generosa de parte del diretor de una organización inglesa, que
aunque no llenamos los requisitos para recibir un financiamiento oficial de ellos, al director le
gustó tanto el proyecto que nos hizo una donación personal que nos cubrió cuarta parte del

Otra oportunidad que surgió este año es la
validación de lo que aprenden en La
Cambalacha como un Diplomado en Animación
Cultural. Gracias a la gestión de Caja Lúdica
(www.cajaludica.org), este año, 8 de los jóvenes
recibirán su diplomado, que esperamos que en
uno o dos años sea validado como un título de
educación básica. Esto significará que en tres
años en el proyecto, podrán ganar sus estudios
básicos completos y ser de la primera
generación de educadores certificados de este
tipo. Esperamos que esto abra más puertas de
trabajo a ell@s y de reconocimiento de nuestra labor a nivel nacional y de los diferentes
organismos relacionados con cultura y educación.
Otra gran oportunidad que tenemos a partir de este año es la de una beca total para la
licenciatura en artes escénicas en la nueva carrera que empezó en la Universidad Landivar en
la ciudad capital. Nacho es el primero en salir a estudiar esa carrera, y desde febrero está toda
la semana en la ciudad estudiando y regresa a La Cambalacha los fines de semana. En dos
años más, regresará como primer Licenciado de Artes Escénicas de su comunidad. La
conseguimos a través de la red NimK´atBe - de arte intercultural- de la que somos parte
fundadora (http://nimkatbe.blogspot.com/2008/05/iiier-encuentro-de-arte-intercultural.html).
En lo que va del año, se puede decir que – a pesar
de no tener financiamiento - crecimos bastante. La
cantidad de Jóvenes Arco Iris prácticamente se
duplicó, (sumándose una participante de Santa
Cruz) y la cantidad de niñ@s que asisten
regularmente a La Cambalacha casi siempre ronda
los 40. Dos veces por semana abrimos la sede de
San Pablo, con un grupo estable de 30 a 40
participantes. Compartimos talleres con 6
comunidades diferentes y sumamos un taller de
medio ambiente a los de danza, teatro, música y
plástica que ya brindábamos.

También la cantidad de voluntari@s creció.
contamos con dos voluntarias que llegaron
por un año, María y Kamila, fortaleciendo el
proyecto y haciéndolo crecer. La cantidad
promedio de voluntari@s que están en un
mes es de 8, (llegando a ser hasta 15!) la
mayoría comprometidos por lo menos a un
mes. Muchos proyectos fueron desarrollados
gracias a ell@s (y parte de ustedes): un
nuevo taller y área de reciclaje, nueva huerta,
nuevo muro de entrada a la sede de San
Marcos, nuevos talleres con l@s niñ@s y
jóvenes, canciones, máscaras, danzas y un
intercambio cultural rico y a veces, desafiante. Casa llena, corazón contento!
Ah! Tuvimos otro reconocimiento municipal: Gabi fue invitada a ser jueza en la elección de la
reina de San Marcos… un lugar muy honorable dentro de la realidad marquense!
Estamos creando una asociación para la educación alternativa en conjunto con la Escuela
Caracol (www.escuelacaracol.org), que nos dará más libertad de acción y nos ayudará –
esperamos – a superar algunos obstáculos burocráticos.
El 20 de Junio festejamos lo que se convierte en tradición - la “Noche Familiar” en la que l@s
familiares de l@s jóvenes llegan a la sede de La Cambalacha a ver los resultados del trabajo
de medio año, conocer el lugar y comer junt@s tamales y pastel. Este año tuvimos el placer de
presentar 3 creaciones originales de l@s jóvenes; dos canciones y una pieza de danza teatro. Y
decidimos estrenarlos frente a las familias, porque sentimos que son un público muy
importante para nosotr@s, y que queremos compartir con quienes apoyan en el día a día,
desde sus hogares.
Hay desafíos a los que nos enfrentamos como la
falta de apoyo financiero de las grandes
organizaciones; la falta de apoyo de algunos
maestros locales, que aunque pocos, son un dolor
de cabeza; jóvenes que dejan el proyecto por
matrimonio prematuro que trae consigo la
expectativa de que la mujer se quede en casa; el
alza en los costos de vida en Guatemala por la
crisis internacional de alimentos. Pero seguimos
siendo cabezas duras, persistentes, creyendo en lo
que hacemos y en que esas no son razones que nos
puedan detener. Y cuando l@s oímos cantar junt@s, o vemos las creaciones que hacen, o
cómo se comunican con otras personas del pueblo y del mundo, cuando vemos la alegría de
l@s niñ@s al recibirnos en las diferentes comunidades, cualquier esfuerzo parece mínimo.
Hay un “para qué”, está claro, frente a los ojos, y por eso seguimos.
Y cómo continuamos? Agosto viene bien activo, con un grupo de 8 voluntari@s de España
(visíta su blog: http://artcion-atitlan.blogspot.com), que estarán por dos meses, un grupo de 25
payas@s/educadores de nuestra organización hermana super buena onda – Proyecto Payaso –
www.proyectopayaso.org - que vienen a hacer un retiro artístico de 6 días, y la construcción

de nuevas cabañas para voluntari@s en el terreno de atrás de La Cambalacha (ex-Nina). Ése
es nuestro más novedoso plan: estamos desarrollando un curso de construcción alternativa con
bambú. El primer curso se abre en Diciembre, donde los participantes vivirán en La
Cambalacha y aprenderán las técnicas de manera práctica y teórica, construyendo desde muros
hasta casas enteras. El curso será pago, incluyendo la vivienda y la comida. Esperamos de esta
forma, crear una nueva rama ecológica del proyecto, crear viviendas y espacios de trabajo
alternativos y de bajo costo para el proyecto y la comunidad y crear una nueva fuente de
autosostenibilidad (imprescindible en estos días). Estamos muy entusiasmad@s con el
proyecto, y la tierra ya está casi lista para construir! Pronto les mandaremos más detalles, pero
pueden empezar a hacer correr la información, y cualquier persona interesada en participar
puede contactarnos a [email protected] .
Y sí, necesitamos de apoyo financiero, para poder
dedicarnos más a l@s niñ@s y jóvenes y menos a las
computadoras y grandes organizaciones. Y la verdad
es que este año, en gran parte, subsistimos gracias a
los pequeños aportes de gente sensible como
ustedes. Entonces les pedimos que nos hagan llegar
cualquier información que tengan sobre posibles
financiamientos, personas interesadas en apoyar
económicamente al proyecto, o posibles donaciones.
El proyecto necesita $100,000 al año, nosotros ya
estamos logrando cubrir la mitad en trabajo, costos
de vida y mantenimiento. Necesitamos la otra mitad
para becas, materiales y transporte a las comunidades para llegar a 2,500 niñ@s y jóvenes.
Si cada uno de los 150 voluntarios que han pasado por acá donaran $300 al año, podríamos
sostener el proyecto por el año completo. Cualquier ayuda es bienvenida. $20 pueden cubrir
clases de pintura para 120 niños y niñas o puede cubrir la beca mensual de un niño. Si quieres

Hello Friends of La Cambalacha!
We hope that you are very well, and
successful in your current projects.
Another six months have flown by and here
we are, in the middle of the rainy season,
with our latest news.
Firstly, La Cambalacha celebrated its fifth birthday! We had a
celebration in San Marcos with five cakes - one for each year – as
well as many well-wishes and good memories. We also had a party
in Hotel La Paz where we presented some of our students’ pieces
and received a lot of support from all our friends in San Marcos.
Hopefully we’ll have many more anniversaries and in five years’
time be toasting the continued growth of La Cambalacha.
This year began with every kind of excitement: the uncertainty and
disappointment of not receiving any major funding; the growth of
our youth group from 11 to 17, and the arrival of many more
children in the afternoon programs. Magically, thanks to the
volunteers and friends of the project, we keep going and growing.
We received a generous donation from the director of an organization in England to whom we
applied for funding. Although we didn’t qualify for funding, the director liked the project
enough to make a personal donation that saw us through a quarter of the year. Thank you E.K.
More funding came through in the form of 12
Irish volunteers who came to work with us for
three weeks. This continued the exchange that
began in January 2007 when Manacés and
Juanita travelled to Nicaragua on an exchange
organized by the excellent Irish organisation,
Mayfield
Community
Arts
Centre
(www.mayfieldarts.org), and was followed by
the first trip to Ireland a year ago in June
2007.

The Irish students stayed for three weeks in
January, living and working alongside the youth,
joining in with workshops, and painting a mural in
the local kindergarten. It was a wonderful
experience for everybody: they had fun and learnt
to create a common language with teenagers from
the other side of the world. Four of the adults who
came with them stayed as volunteers for three extra
months, strengthening their bond with the project
and contributing a huge amount - building an
adobe wall, working with recycling and creating art with papier-maché. The final stage of this
project saw Moisés, Gaspar, Santos and Lore headed to Ireland, marking the third time that La
Cambalacha has travelled to present its work and facilitate workshops abroad. These
opportunities to grow and to know other countries always move us and watching the students´
faces as they board a plane or see a different country for the first time is immensely satisfying.
An opportunity arose for our youth group, who are
studying towards a ´Diploma in Culture´. Thanks to
Caja
Lúdica
(www.cajaludica.org),
eight
Cambalacha students will receive their diploma this
year, qualifying them as teachers in the national
system. This also means that after three years’ study
here, students can complete their basic education,
legitimizing our work on a national level. We hope
that this opens more doors for our students and
leads to further recognition of the value of our work
by cultural and educational organizations.
Another educational opportunity this year came in the form of an arts study scholarship at
Landivar University in Guate City. Nacho is the first to work and study on this course, and
since February he has spent every week studying in the city then returning to La Cambalacha
for the weekends. In two more years he will earn his Bachelor’s in Scenic Arts, the first
professional of this kind in his community. We are continuing to work with the group who
made
this
possible,
the
Nimk’atbé
Network
of
Intercultural
Art
(http://nimkatbe.blogspot.com/2008/05/iiier-encuentro-de-arte-intercultural.html).
So far this year, despite our financial
difficulties, we are still growing. The number
of children and youth in the Arco Iris program
has practically doubled (including our first
Jóvenes Arco Iris participant from Santa Cruz).
We open our center in San Pablo twice a week,
with a regular group of 30 - 40 children. We
run regular weekly workshops with six
different communities in a variety of dance,
theatre, music, arts and crafts and
environmental education.
The number of volunteers has also grown. Two of our volunteers, Maria and Kamila, are here
for a whole year, greatly strengthening our project with their industry. The average number of
resident volunteers is seven or eight (and is currently 15 for the next two months!) with most

staying for at least one month. Many projects
are developed thanks to them (and you!),
including: a new workshop in the recycling
area; an ever-expanding vegetable and fruit
garden; a new wall in the entrance to the San
Marcos center; new songs, dances, masks,
giant masks, and workshops for the kids and
teenagers; all of which makes for a rich sometimes
challenging
intercultural
exchange. A full house has a happy heart!
We had another important local achievement:
Gabi was invited to be a judge in the election of the town queen of San Marcos La Laguna - an
honourable position and another boost for La Cambalacha’s reputation in the local
community.
We are also creating an association for alternative education together with the neighbouring
Caracol school (www.escuelacaracol.org). This will give La Cambalacha official “NGO”
status, giving us more legitimacy and freedom, and eliminating our dependency on the
umbrella organizations who have generously helped us this far.
On 20th June we celebrated our latest new tradition: ¨Family Night¨, when our students’
families come to La Cambalacha to see the results of half a year´s work - and to enjoy
tamales, cake and coffee! This year we presented five new pieces: two new songs, two new
choreographies and a theatre piece. We chose to premiere these pieces in front of the families
because they are such an important audience for us and we wanted to share our work with the
people who support us from their homes day after day.
Some challenges we currently face are: the challenges of fundraising; the lack of support
among certain local teachers, who, though small in number, go out of their way to show their
prejudices and dislike of us; premature marriages - two of our very talented female youth
leaders had to leave the project this year to fulfil the local expectation of married women to
stay in the home; and, the increased cost of living in
Guatemala due to the World Food Crisis. However,
we continue to plough on with thick skin, believing
in what we do and in the reasons why we can´t stop.
And when we hear students singing together or look
at the pieces they create or how they interact with
others in their community and the wider world, we
see the great pleasure that La Cambalacha brings to
different communities, however small our effort may
seem. The justification is clear, in front of our eyes
every day, and that´s why we continue.
And how do we continue? August is already jam-packed with a group of eight talented
volunteers from Spain (check out their Cambalacha blog at http://artcionatitlan.blogspot.com), who will be here for two months; a very experienced choreographer and
dance teacher; several other industrious individuals of various different origin; and a group of
25 clowns/educators from Proyecto Payaso (our right-on sister organization working for
HIV/AIDS awareness – www.proyectopayaso.org) who are here for a six-day arts retreat.

One of our latest projects is an introductory course in bamboo construction techniques, to be
held in the first fortnight of December. Participants will learn to build their own house from
the first to the last steps, including both theory and healthy hands-on practice – by building
new volunteer accommodation, and all the while living and eating in La Cambalacha. With
this, we strengthen the project’s ecological arm, build more spaces for our community, find
low-cost and low-impact ways of living, and create a new source of economic selfsustainability. We are very enthusiastic about the project and the ground is almost ready for

As always, we need more financial support, so we
can work with more children and spend less time on
computers. We are currently supported for the most
part by small donations from friends. We ask you for
any information you have about possible sources of
funding,
including
interested
individuals,
organizations, or possible donations. The project
needs $100,000 every year to keep going, half of
which we provide in work, food and maintenance of
the center, but a further $50,000 is needed to cover
scholarships, teaching materials, and transport to
reach 2,500 children and young people.
In this unfunded year, we have enjoyed running the project with much less bureaucracy and
administration, freeing us to give much more attention to raising the quality of our programs,
creating more art, and reaching more children. To make this sustainable, we need more friends
helping out with whatever they can. If all 200 volunteers who have come to La Cambalacha
gave $300 a year, we could run the project for the full year. Any donation helps: $20 buys all
the materials we need to give painting classes to 120 children, or covers one monthly
