International certificates
In the lower forms the pupils take world subjects
such as world of technology, world of the theatre
and world of media, on top of the usual curriculum.
They also get enhanced English. In the upper forms
pupils take an internationally minded course; InterCulture, InterBusiness, InterScience or InterHealth
which is linked to their chosen stream. The school
offers its pupils the possibility to prepare for international certificates such as The Cambridge First
Certificate of English or Cambridge Certificate in
Advanced English and certificates from Delf Scolaire
for French and the Goethe Institute for German.
Throughout their school career our pupils make
contact with and work together with fellow
pupils from Europe and the rest of the world.
In 2012-2013 the Carolus Clusius College started
Orfeo, an international grammar school.
Education in Orfeo is partly bilingual.

Exploring the world
The world no longer ends at our border
In fact, borders are fading rapidly. Nowadays distance is of little or
no importance when it comes to maintaining relationships with
people in other countries. Working or studying abroad, travelling to
exotic destinations, holding positions in which having frequent
international contacts and using a foreign language as a means of
communication within the company is daily business, is becoming
the norm rather than the exception. Whether you actively explore
the world or learn about it at school, you are encouraged to extend
your boundaries by coming into contact with other languages,
cultures, values and by gaining new experiences which will help you
become a world-citizen. Our aim is also to teach our pupils to respect
the world and all who live on it. This aim defines how we teach and
how we interact with each other.
At the Carolus Clusius
College we are interested
in other people and cultures
and are open to new
experiences. The school
is named after the Dutch
humanist Carolus Clusius
(1526-1609). He was one of
the most important European botanists of the
sixteenth century. He is
the author of several innovative and internationally
renowned botanical publications. He introduced
exotic plants such as the tulip and potato to the
Netherlands. He was an advisor of the princes and
aristocrats in various European countries, professor
and manager of the hortus botanicus in Leiden, and
a central figure in a European network of ex­changes.
We are proud to be named after a man who lived,
worked and studied in an international setting in a
time when this was not yet a matter of course.
Education
The Carolus Clusius College is a C
­ hristian secondary
school which is open to pupils of all denominations.
There are about 1700 pupils who attend either vmbo
(prepatory vocational education), havo (senior
general secondary education) or vwo (grammar
school). Most pupils are from the city
of Zwolle. Because the school is located within
walking distance of the railway station many pupils
from the surrounding area also attend the school.
The Carolus Clusius College is a world school.
The school is part of the international Elos network
(“education stretching borders”) and the UNESCO
affiliated schools network. Pupils get enhanced
education in the foreign languages and take part
in international Olympiads, conferences, contests,
exchanges, study trips and so on. The school wants
to prepare its pupils for a future in which they will
increasingly be faced with an international
learning and working environment.
