The New Wineskin Initiative is an outreach, discipleship, and evangelism effort of Leander United
Methodist Church developed to help us arrive at
our vision. Its mission is to create a movement of
multiplying neighborhood-based faith communities
that engage the unaffiliated and transform
communities. The unaffiliated are those people in
our community who are not looking for a traditional church. The core team for the initiative
starts as a small group in one neighborhood, but
over several years it will expand to include a network
of small teams in a variety of neighborhoods. The
first team will launch this fall with a year-long
commitment to meet weekly for discipleship and
serve weekly as Christ’s representatives in the
neighborhood.
Why are we doing this initiative?
Jesus calls us to “make disciples of all nations” and
is leading us to “meet people where they are”. Our
neighbors who aren’t interested in traditional
church (Old Wineskins) are the “new wine” that
we want to engage. We want to create a new way
to experience God’s blessing and invitation by
engaging these neighbors with a group of transformed servants who they encounter in their own
neighborhoods. We also want to create a new
opportunity for our congregation to experience
being the church; one that helps us to live as a
community of disciples on Christ’s mission in our
own homes, neighborhoods, workplaces, and
schools.
Why now?
Key leaders at the Texas Methodist Foundation,
our own Capital District, and the Rio Texas Annual
Conference office of Mission Vitality are aware of
how vibrant and strong our Church is. They enthusiastically support our commitment to reach new
people in our communities in new ways. They
have encouraged us to pursue this initiative and
have offered their financial support. A total of four
grants will allow us to hire a full time associate
pastor this summer so that I can lead the initiative
and we can continue to improve and expand our
existing ministry and mission.
How can you be a part of this initiative?
The entire church will be invited to participate in
different ways. I will lead the launch of the very
first neighborhood-based faith community and
guide the team to multiply into additional teams.
The first team will be made up of church members
who are sent by our congregation to commit to
this work. Everyone from our church will be
welcomed to participate in our neighborhood
events, block-parties, movie nights, and other
activities. Everyone from our church will be asked
to pray for the team and neighborhood. Everyone
in our church will be challenged to think about
how they can grow as missionary servants in their
own homes, neighborhoods, work places, and
schools.
What changes can we expect at Leander
UMC?
The added leadership and presence of a new Associate Pastor will be a major change for our church.
While I will remain the primary preacher, the new
pastor will serve to lead administrative areas,
guide ministry and programs, care for the needs of
our members, teach and facilitate groups and
classes, and take on many other responsibilities.
They will be a key leader in our community. I will
continue to oversee worship and preaching, our
staff, our church council, discipleship and outreach
strategy, and our vision. I will be available for pastoral care and counseling, just as I am now.

MEET OUR NEW ASSOCIATE PASTOR,
JON SNAPE!
Leander UMC is thrilled to welcome to our
staff the Rev. Jonathan Snape. Jon will serve
as our Associate pastor and give special
attention to the areas of administrative
leadership, congregational vitality, and
supporting our ministries for youth. Jon has
spent the last year working as Hunt UMC's
Director of Ministry Development, three hours
from Julianne and Corban in Round Rock. The
Snapes moved to Round Rock from Nashville,
Tennessee in 2015 as Julianne accepted a job
as Vice President of Operations at Capital
Gymnastics, enabling them to be near her
family.
Jon grew up in McLean, VA, a suburb of
Washington, DC, experiencing a call to local
church ministry the summer before his junior
year of high school. Jon attended Rhodes
College in Memphis, TN, studying Philosophy, Religion, and Spanish. After college, Jon
headed to Nashville where he completed the Center for Youth Ministry Training, in
which he served as a youth director for two years before attending Vanderbilt Divinity
for his Master's of Divinity.

and their son Corban
While at Vanderbilt, Jon met Julianne as she completed her Master's of Theological
Studies. Julianne gave birth to Corban in March, 2014 during Jon's three year
appointment as solo pastor of Dodson Chapel UMC. Jon was licensed as a local pastor in
2010, commissioned in 2012, and ordained in 2015.
Jon loves serving the church and leading people to more full and meaningful lives in
Christ. He is passionate about fighting for justice in the areas of race, class, and gender
as both a witness to and expression of the Good News of Jesus Christ. Jon believes that
the love of Christ transforms us spiritually, socially, and politically. Jon hopes to be a life-long
learner, understanding each experience as an opportunity to grow in wisdom and faith.
His hobbies include running, watching sports, and enjoying Mexican restaurants. Jon and
Julianne are thrilled to join the community of Leander UMC, seeking to love the church
and surrounding community as they have experienced love in Jesus Christ. You will have
a chance to meet Jon on Sunday May 22nd as he and his family join us for worship.

ARE YOU WEARING YOUR NAME TAG ON SUNDAYS?
Do you need a name tag? Just put your name on the list located on the
bulletin board in the fellowship hall and we’ll make one for you!
Wearing a name tag on Sundays helps people feel welcome when they
visit us and it helps us learn each other’s names. We would love for everyone to make a
habit of wearing a name tag on Sundays.
SUNDAY SCHOOL CHALLENGE: During the month of May, we are
challenging our Sunday school classes to collect canned meats
such as tuna, chicken, salmon, chili, etc. for the Hill Country Ministries Food Pantry. It would be great if we could start the month
of June with 150 cans of protein to provide lunches for the families with children who are out of school for the summer.

On Sunday, June 19, the Way off Broadway Theater
in Leander will be presenting a play based on Agatha
Christie’s “A Murder is Announced”. Proceeds from
this performance benefit Drive a Senior Northwest.
The play is described as "A classic Christie puzzle of
mixed motives, concealed identities, a second death,
a determined Inspector grimly following the twists
and turns, and Miss Marple on hand to provide the
final solution in a dramatic confrontation." Tickets
are $30 and you can order through Julie Ramsey
([email protected]), at the church or from the
Drive a Senior office, 512-250-5021.
YOUTH FUNDS ARE LOW: The Youth Fund is currently
very low! Many of our youth families are already paying for
many extra expenses that come from raising a teenager (or
two or three or four)! The youth fund helps our youth be
able to participate in activities they might otherwise have to
miss out on, such as the Mid-Winter District Retreat and
Spirit Fest which have costs attached. If a youth requests funds to help pay his/
her way to an event, the youth will have worked two or more hours to support
the church beyond their regular volunteer commitments. The funds are also
used to support program expenses not covered by our budget. If you are looking
for a way to support the youth, we sure could use your help to revive our fund.
COLLEGE CARE PACKAGE MINISTRY
Our college care package ministry is a way we show our college students that we think about them, we pray for them, and we love them
when they are away. We send out care packages filled with all kinds of
goodies and encouraging notes twice each semester. Thank you to
everyone who has contributed to this ministry! We will take a break
over the summer and resume sending out packages again in the fall.

UMYF for youth (6th-12th grade) meets 5:00-6:30 pm on Sunday evenings
for fellowship, devotionals, games and service projects.

(5:00 pm) Youth Adventures: We are going on a hike. Meet at the
Williamson County Park, Disc Golf Course at 5:00. We are going to
do a Prayer Scavenger Hunt. You will have walked 5K by the time
we are finished and spent time in prayer and nature. Wear closed
toe shoes, sunscreen and insect repellent. Bring your own drinks.

9:45 SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS:
We will be doing a study “This You Can Believe”. This is a study of the
Apostle’s Creed. The class is led by Joel and Esther Salas and Laureen Sutton.
11:00 SUNDAY SCHOOL/CONFIRMATION CLASS:
In May we will be learning how to use tools of worship, what the Wesleyan
Quadrilateral is all about, how the General United Methodist Church
functions and what our denomination believes about topics in the news
today, including social justice.
SENIOR CELEBRATION DINNER:
Our graduating Seniors, their parents and families, special guests and
Sunday school teachers will be the honored guests at the Senior Celebration
Dinner on May 21 at 6:30. The dinner will be prepared and served by the
Fresh Journey Adult Sunday school class. Congrats to this year’s high school
graduates: Weston Bonnet, Cole Shuffield, Kimberly Nelson and Kyra
Lundstrom. If you know of others in our congregation who are graduating,
please contact Elizabeth Edmiston (512-563-8840) to let her know. We do
not want to leave anyone out!
SENIOR SUNDAY:
Our graduating high school seniors will be recognized and honored during
all worship services on Sunday, May 22.
CONFIRMATION:
Confirmation is Sunday, June 5. A Confirmation Celebration Dinner will be
held on June 4 at 6:30 pm where the confirmands, their families and special
guests will celebrate with a meal hosted by the Fresh Journey Sunday school
class. Congratulations to our confirmands: Zoe Amalya, Christal Cantwell,
Mikayla Garcia, Logan Parmenter, and Sophia Parmenter.

BLAST! KIDS PLAY & PRAISE OUR GOD
Saturday, May 14
9-11 am
We will be learning about Ruth, Naomi and Boaz and having a party
since this is the last BLAST! meeting of the school year. BLAST! will take
a break over the summer and resume again in the fall.
BLAST! is our one Saturday a month program for children ages 3 (pottytrained) through 5th grade. We do crafts, sing songs, play games, and
hear stories all designed to help children learn about our Savior and
loving those around us. There is no cost to participate.
PARENT’S NIGHT OUT
Friday, May 20
6-10 pm
Parent’s Night Out is open to children ages 2 to 10. The cost is $10 per
child for the night and reservations are required. We play games, sing
songs, eat snacks and do a fun craft before settling down for a “G”
rated movie. Children arriving before 6:30 pm are invited to bring their
dinner and eat together. Pajamas and socks are encouraged, but not
required. Bring something to lay on during movie time. Register by

This is our last PNO (Parent’s Night Out) of the school year. PNO takes
a break over the summer and resumes again in September. This will be
Miss Elsa’s last PNO with us because she is getting married and will be
moving away. It would be wonderful if each child who participates in
PNO in May would draw a picture or make a card wishing Miss Elsa a
wonderful new life with her future husband.
CHILDREN’S SUNDAY SCHOOL
& CHILDREN’S CHURCH:
During the month of May, children’s Sunday
school and children’s church classes will be
learning stories and doing activities on the
book of Acts. On May 8, we will be creating
Mother’s Day gifts for the ladies who do so
much to make our lives brighter and more
joyful. On May 22, we will be celebrating the
birthday of the Church, with classroom parties.
SUMMER SPECIAL MUSIC: Share your gifts and talents to the glory
of God! The Choir takes a much deserved break in the summer, so
we are looking for volunteers to provide special music for the 8:30
am and 11:00 am services from July 3 to August 14. If you are
interested, just pick a Sunday which works for you and contact
Debbie Carlson (512-337-7925). There will also be a sign-up sheet
on the bulletin board in the fellowship hall. HUGE thanks again to
the choir for faithfully serving throughout the year!!
MISSION TRIP FUNDRAISER:
The Costa Rica Mission Team will be selling cold drinks and cotton
candy at the Leander Old Town Street Festival on May 21, from
11:00 am-8:00 pm. Come out and support your community and buy
a drink and some cotton candy from the team!
YARD SALE:

Come one, come all! The 1st Annual United Methodist Men’s Yard
Sale is this Friday and Saturday. Half of the proceeds raised will go
to the Youth Mission Experience this summer and the other half
will go to the United Methodist Men to fund special projects.
CHURCH FAMILY CAMP
July 28-31
HEB Foundation in Leaky, TX
Registration for Family Camp starts May 1 and ends July 10.
We will have openings for 220 campers. The camp begins on
Thursday evening, July 28 and concludes Sunday morning,
July 31. You can arrive as late as Saturday evening, but we
encourage you to get there as quick as you can. We can help
arrange carpooling needed. During camp time there will be
plenty for you to do. In addition to just enjoying nature,
there will be bible studies, children’s activities, board
games, swimming and just good old-fashioned fellowship.
The cost to attend Family Camp is $35 for adults (age 13 and
up), $20 for children (ages 4-12), and no charge for children
age 3 and under. Everyone ages 13 and older must do at
least one shift of kitchen duty and one clean up job before
departure. Registration for Family Camp is first come, first
served. Your cabin is not assigned until payment is received.
There are a limited number of partial scholarships available.

June, July and August and resume again in September.

The Mary Martha Circle meets on the second Tuesday of each month for fellowship,
refreshments and a variety of different service projects. On May 10 we will meet at
5:30 pm for a potluck picnic at Marjorie Pyle’s home. For more information about the

LADIES’ QUILTING GROUP

We will be working on quilts for the Linus Project. If you have a portable sewing
machine, bring it. We will have some machines available to share if you don’t have one.

Cowabunga! The surf’s up! Watusi, twist
and surf your way to a greater understanding of God’s great & awesome
love. At Surf Shack, children will discover an interactive, energizing, Bible
based program that will give them an opportunity to ride the waves with
God. Children will become surfers and explore how to serve God and
experience God’s amazing presence in their lives. Children will explore the
Bible story and theme for the day in a variety of centers: Science, Story,
Mission, Snacks, and Games. Everything will invite the children to participate
in God’s ongoing creation.
Vacation Bible School is open to children entering kindergarten through 5th
grade in fall 2016. We have limited openings for preschool age children
who are at least 3 years old and potty-trained.
VOLUNTEERS WE NEED:
 44 Elementary Lifeguards
 4 Elementary Station Leaders
 10 Pre-K Lifeguards
 Nurse
 4 Pre-K Station Leaders
Lifeguards travel to the different stations with a group of about 5 children.
You’ll make sure that the children are engaged and participating in the
activities. You are the relationship builder for the week.
Station Leaders provide the lessons for the day. Each day you will present
the same lesson 4 times, each time to a different group of children.
 Clothesline rope
 Spray adhesive
 White, tan or blue sheets
 Large craft sticks
 Empty soda cans
 Packing peanuts
 Fishing nets
 HEB gift cards
 Dollar Tree gift cards
 Kites (solid bright colors and “beachy” ones)
 Leftover pieces of rope (at least 5’ long)
 Wood – 2’ x 4’ (12 at least 8’ long)
 Lifeguard ring (just need to borrow this)
 Beachy type string lights/lanterns
 Smooth, thin twine for nametags
 One liter plastic bottles with caps
 Blacklights (just need to borrow)
 Bright paint (leftovers, samples, craft or wall)
TRAINING DATES FOR VOLUNTEERS:
Station Leaders: Sunday, May 1 at 12:15 pm (lunch and childcare provided)
Lifeguards: Choose ONE date that best fits your schedule:
 Sunday, May 22 at 11:00 am in room 4
 Tuesday, May 24 at 6:30 pm in room 7
 Thursday, June 9 at 6:30 pm in meeting room A
 Sunday, June 12 at 11:00 am in room 4
Safety training will immediately follow training if you need to certify or
recertify as a volunteer. Let Renee Purvis know if you need childcare.
