For the love of art, and the promotion of Mexican low-brow art and design, I embarked on the organisation and design of the exhibition Mi Casa Su Casa that showed at the No Vacancy Gallery at QV in Melbourne in June 2011. It showcased the work of two of the most influential Mexican artists of their generation: graphic designer Oscar Reyes and street artist Watchavato. The opening night was attended by 500 people and was featured in various media outlets. Project completed in collaboration with Oscar Salinas and Dean Teniswood. It’s here that elements of popular Mexican aesthetic are highly recycled and reinterpreted, sharing the fundamental principles of the “Neomexican” style - a need of reclaiming one’s identity and turning it into visual expression. Recurring iconography in his work includes nationalism, religion, urban customs, popular culture, humour, life and death. Reyes is also the curator of the book Sensacional! Mexican Street Art which has achieved cult status. The book illustrates the best examples of popular imagery found on the walls of shops, cantinas, beauty parlours and wrestling arenas throughout the country. His work has been exhibited in galleries in Mexico, Spain and the US, and has been featured in various publications such as iDn, Communications Arts, STEP, LOFT Miami and Neo2.
