ST. L BRONX, A WORD FROM THE PASTOR: that city dedicated to the Virgin of the Cloud. OUR LADY OF THE CLOUD This devotion has also spread to the United States. Immigrants from Ecuador in Chicago and New York have confraternities dedicated to Our Lady of the Cloud and have annual festivities in her honor. The Spanish Mass this past Saturday at 1:30PM was in honor of Our Lady of the Cloud. The devotion to The Virgin of the Cloud, La Virgen de la Nube, is from Ecuador. It originated 85 years after the Archbishop of Quito blessed the miraculous statue of Our Lady of Good Success on February 2, 1611. Here is the story of the miracle of Our Lady of the Cloud. At the end of the year 1696, the Bishop of Quito, Don Sancho de Andrade y Figueroa, was very ill. Disconsolate at the thought of losing their Bishop, the people of Guálupo, a village on the outskirts of Quito, decided to organize a novena to the Virgin Mary asking her for his recovery. On December 30, they organized a Rosary procession from the town of Guálupo to the Cathedral in Quito. On the return trip, at around 4:30 in the afternoon, Fr. José de Ulloa y la Cadena, chaplain of the Monastery of the Immaculate Conception of Quito, was leading the group in the praying of the Rosary. He was just beginning to recite the third decade of the Glorious Mysteries when he looked up and saw a figure forming in a large cloud in the late afternoon sky. He pointed to the east and exclaimed to the crowd: “The Virgin! The Virgin!” In the sky between the sanctuaries of Guálupo and Quito, the Blessed Virgin appeared standing on a cloud somewhat darker and denser than the others, which served as her pedestal. She wore a crown on her head and carried a bunch of lilies in her right hand like a scepter. In her left hand she carried her Divine Son. She was dressed in a white silk tunic that draped to her feet in soft pleats, half hidden by a majestic mantle. On her head was a long filmy white veil. This apparition, which was viewed by close to 500 persons in the procession as well as many others in the environs of Quito, lasted for the length of a Glory be and the praying of one Our Father and one Hail Mary. Testimonies of the miracle include those of the President of the Royal Chamber Don Mateo de Mata Ponce de León and other respected town officials. All of the testimonies are carefully conserved today in the Archives of the Quito Archdiocese. As confirmation of the miracle, the Bishop was immediately healed. Soon afterward, he authorized the devotion to the Virgin under the invocation The Virgin of the Cloud, and erected an altar to her in the Cathedral of Quito. The Bishop, who remained very devoted to the Blessed Virgin and the Rosary, lived some years more, dying in May of 1702. News of the miracle spread rapidly throughout that province and it soon spread to Peru. Some years later, the Prioress of the Monastery of the Nazarene Mothers, Mother Barbara Josefa of the Holy Trinity, received permission for a picture painted on linen of the Virgin of the Cloud to be carried in the annual October procession through the streets of Lima. This invocation to Our Lady remains very popular in Lima today. In Ecuador, a grand procession honoring the Virgin of the Cloud is held every year on January 1 in the city of Azogues. It is organized by the Franciscans who constructed a large sanctuary in 2 ROSARY VIRGIN OF CHIQUINQUIRA, COLUMBIA (1555) The Spanish Mass here at St. Helena on Sunday will be in honor of The Rosary Virgin of Chiquinquira. A reception will follow in the cafeteria. The story of Mary’s appearance there is very interesting. Way up on the Andean Plateau, 150 kilometers to the north of Bogata, Columbia, is the city of Chiquinquira, founded in 1856, and where at the country house of the Spaniard Don Antonio de Santana, a wondrous miracle occurred. Don Antonio, in 1555, being a devout Christian had an oratory built in his home and requested the Dominican Brother, Fray Andrews Jadraque, to have the image of the Holy Virgin painted. The silversmith and painter, Alonzo de Narvaez did the work. The brother demanded that the Virgin bear a rosary, the official emblem of his order. The cloth had room for two other images at the side, and it was decided to put Saint Anthony of Padua at the right and Saint Andrew the Apostle at the left. The painting was done in tempora, but since the chapel was of straw, the paint faded under the action of the sun, the air and the rain. The damage was such that the town priest had it removed from the altar as unworthy for the celebration of Holy Mass. The canvas was taken to Chiquinquira and was used for a rag to dry the wheat under the sun. Seven years later Dona Maria Ramos arrived from Spain and grieved to find the chapel used for animals. Day after day she prayed there that Mary would comfort her soul, and she was hopeful that her prayers would be heard. On Friday, December 26, 1586, at 9:00 o’clock in the morning, the canvas was suddenly brightened by the Holy Virgin. Maria was in pious astonishment, almost in a trance, and soon the miracle drew crowds of people. This wonderful happening was followed by miraculous cures. The Church authorities ordered an investigation to be made of the Virgin of Chiquinquira to verify the truth of the miracle and in the year 1630, the Dominican Brotherhood authorized by the archbishop of Bogata, took charge of the sanctuary, and built a church which was replaced by the present Basilica in 1801. The Holy See, after discussion of the wonderful miracle, granted a liturgical feast day on July 9 that is celebrated with special services also in some sections of Venezuela and Ecuador as well. In 1919, by order of the Holy See, the Holy Image was crowned with splendor in Bogata, and in 1944 it was granted the gold scepter and precious jewels as the mother queen of Colombia. The Virgin of Chiquinquira is the comforting heart of Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador; prelates, magistrates, and other leaders of the nation have knelt down at Mary’s feet and throngs of people, rich and poor, continuously flow to this place to pray for consolation and guidance through this earthly life. FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME St. Pompilio Maria Pirrotti, a Piarist Saint - Feast July 15 Pope Pius XI. His remains are preserved and venerated by the faithful in the Piarist church in Campi Salentina. It is very important to Pray to Mary THE “HEBREW” STAR OF DAVID WAS EARLIER USED BY CHRISTIANS Domenico Pirrotti was born in Montecalvo, Italy on September 29, 1710, the sixth of the eleven children of Jerome and Donna Pirrotti. His father was a lawyer and was of the noble class. At the age of 16, he left home and joined the Piarist fathers in Benevento, where on February 2, 1727, he took the religious habit of the Piarists and professed the four religious vows made by all Piarists: poverty, chastity, obedience, and the education of youth. At the same time, he changed his name to Pompilio Maria. Shockingly, the use of the six-pointed star as the Jewish symbol only goes back to the 17th century, while this symbol was used in Christian churches centuries earlier. To complicate matters further, in Hebrew this star is not called a “Star of David” but magen david -- מגן דודthe “Shield of David”. Why is this an important difference? The Hebrew word for shield magen literally means a protective covering. In Genesis 15, God makes a covenant with Abram, saying: “Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield (magen)". In Psalms, we find another usage of the word in reference to God made by King David himself, repeating over and over that God alone is “our help and our shield” (magen), the provider of true security. Thus, the "Star of David" is actually a symbol of God's protection. He was sent to Chieti to study philosophy, but he became ill and was transferred to Melfi to finish his studies. Before his priestly ordination, he was sent to Turi for a year to teach religion and then to Lecce to teach literature. He was ordained on March 20, 1734 by the Archbishop of Brindisi. For the next ten years, he traveled throughout Italy preaching and hearing confessions. Unlike the menorah, the Lion of Judah, the shofar, and the lulav, the Star of David was never a uniquely Jewish symbol. The symbol of intertwined equilateral triangles is a common one in the Middle East and North Africa, and is thought to bring good luck. It appears occasionally in early Christian and Jewish artwork, but never as an exclusively Jewish symbol. It is called the “shatkona” in Hinduism and the “seal of Solomon” in Islam. During the 19th century the symbol began to proliferate amongst the Jewish communities of Eastern Europe, ultimately being used amongst the Jewish communities in the Pale of Settlement, a region of western Russia where permanent Jewish settlement was prohibited. A significant motivating factor was the desire to imitate the influence of the Christian Cross. The earliest Jewish usage of the symbol was inherited from medieval Arabic literature by Kabbalists for use in talismanic protective amulets (segulof) where it was known as a Seal of Solomon. The symbol was also used in Christian churches as a decorative motif many centuries before its first known use in a Jewish synagogue. Prior to the 19th century, official use in Jewish communities was generally known only in the region of today’s Czech Republic, Austria, and possibly parts of Southern Germany, having begun in medieval Prague. The Lord gave him extraordinary gifts. In 1746, while he was in Lanciano, he rang the church bells at two in the morning and people flocked alarmed. He told them that they had to pray to Mary to save their town from an impending earthquake. The people did as he instructed, and a powerful earthquake struck the Abruzzo region causing severe damage, but Lanciano was spared. During the famine of 1765, he had the people of Campi Salentina also pray to Our Blessed Mother, and the famine never struck the village. Even today in this city every year on July 15, the day of his feast, they distribute blessed bread baskets in memory of his protection. He lived during a time when Jansenism and anticlericalism were growing in popularity, and many Catholics had stopped receiving the Eucharist, but St. Pompilio emphasized the importance of receiving it frequently along with spreading devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Virgin Mary, which served as the focus of his preaching and spiritual direction. From this sprang complaints and accusations, resulting in his abrupt departure from Lanciano in 1747. He spent the next eleven and a half years in Naples spreading the same devotions, and he founded there a confraternity called the Charity of God, which had as its purpose praying for the dead and practicing the Sacraments of Christian virtues, especially the reception of daily Communion. In 1765, he wrote a Novena to the Sacred Heart which spread rapidly throughout the Kingdom of Naples. The symbol became representative of the worldwide Zionist community, and later the broader Jewish community, after it was chosen as the central symbol on a flag at the First Zionist Congress in 1897 US ARMY CHAPLAIN CONSIDERED FOR CANONIZATION He was accused of being too lenient in giving penances, and he was expelled from Naples. For the next six years, he travelled from community to community, preaching and hearing confessions, and during this time he experienced atrocious physical suffering. Finally, he was invited to live in the Piarist community at Campi Salentino by a pious Sacred Heart group. There, he reorganized the schools and made sure that education was available to all children and not just those from wealthy families, and he intensified the religious life of the inhabitants. After celebrating Mass on Sunday, July 13, 1766, he became ill while hearing confessions. He was brought to his bedroom and died there two days later at the age of 56, while reciting the first vespers of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. He was beatified in 1890 by Pope Leo XIII and was proclaimed a saint on March 19, 1934 by A former army chaplain, and the ninth military chaplain to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor, Father Emil J. Kapaun has taken a step closer to possible beatification and sainthood. 3 But for Scott Carter, coordinator for the Father Kapaun Guild, the story of the priest himself is the real news. “If someone who grew up so close to us, in circumstances fairly similar to us, is able to achieve sainthood, it’s inspiring. It makes the faith hit home. It really brings it to life and makes us realize that JULY 10, 2016 everything we talk about, the gospel, Jesus' promises, all of this is real and it is possible to achieve.” Carter spoke of the number of times the Korean War-era priest survived battles and his runs onto the battlefield to rescue the wounded. The priest's pipe was shot out of his mouth several times. Fr. Kapaun was born in Pilsen, Kansas to a farming family. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Wichita in June 1940. He served as a U.S. Army chaplain from 1944 through 1946, then rejoined the military chaplaincy in 1948. He was sent to Korea in July 1950, where he became known for his service with the U.S. Army's Eighth Cavalry regiment. He would stay up at night to write letters home on behalf of wounded soldiers. He was captured by Chinese soldiers at Unsan in North Korea. As a prisoner, the priest carried a fellow prisoner sixty miles, even though the man weighed 20 pounds more than he did. He would share food and wash the clothes of prisoners and pick lice off of their clothes. FR. NELSON IS ON VACATION, and he will return in mid August. Fr. Jose Javier is here and will celebrate the Spanish Masses. We wish Father Nelson a good vacation. Father Andrew is visiting for a month. We welcome back both Fr. Andrew and Fr. Jose Javier, and Fr. Richard has returned from his vacation. PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS Banns of Marriage II—David Granda — Maria Bunay 50/50 DRAWING:The July 3 winners are: No. 226 & No. 285 @ $25 After he was placed in a prisoner of war camp, Fr. Kapaun helped his fellow prisoners solve problems and keep up morale. His efforts helped them to survive in a harsh winter. For those who did not survive, he helped bury their corpses. Fr. Kapaun would celebrate the sacraments for his fellow prisoners, hear their confessions, and say Mass. He developed a blood clot in his leg and fell ill with dysentery and pneumonia. He died May 23, 1951, at the age of 35, and was buried in a mass grave on the Yalu River. In 1993, Pope John Paul II declared him a Servant of God. In April 2013, he was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, the United States' highest military honor. Now the Catholic Church is considering whether he should be beatified. Six historical consultants of the Vatican's Congregation for the Causes of Saints have evaluated the documents in his case for completeness and accuracy. They approved them at a June 21 meeting in Rome. The vote sends Fr. Kapaun's cause to the theological consultants who will review the priest’s writings and teachings for conformity with Catholic doctrine and teaching. Their approval would send the case to a panel of the congregation’s cardinals and bishops, which could vote to send the case to Pope Francis for final approval. Pope Francis could then declare him as Venerable. Separately, medical consultants are examining evidence of two alleged miracles attributed to the priest’s intervention. One miracle must be approved for Fr. Kapaun’s beatification, and a second for his canonization. P.
