iversity of the Palatinate
In Germany’s largest contiguous wine-growing area
and the Republic’s largest contiguous forest area,
everyday gloom and grey don’t stand a chance
against the dominant sandstone red and brightly
hued colours of the fields, forests and steep vine
terraces. Because the Palatinate offers the nature
idyll pure and unadulterated as well as tons of challenges for all who want to enjoy the great outdoors.
And because the weather in the sunny southwest is
especially mild, the open-air season begins much
earlier and ends much later than in other regions.
As the second-largest wine area of Germany, the Palatinate offers wine enjoyment of the
highest calibre. Both renominated vineyards and
younger winemakers impress with their award-winning wines and innovative ideas. Holiday makers in
the Palatinate should definitely not miss visiting
one of the numerous wine-growing enterprises as
well as a wine tavern or “Vinothek” with wine tasting along the German Wine Route.
The unique features of the region can be
discovered in many different ways. It’s up to you
whether you wish to hike one of the three quality
seal-approved footpaths: the “Pfälzer Waldpfad”
with its spectacular cliffs, boulders, valleys castle
ruins, the “Pfälzer Weinsteig” with its Mediterranean-emulating terraced vineyard landscape, picturesque villages and serene forest passages, or the
“Pfälzer Höhenweg”, which climbs up over the
highest peak of the Palatinate offering a
plethora of panoramas – these are the shining star trails in the Palatinate hiker paradise. If you prefer to discover on two wheels
rather than in two hiking boots get ready to
be spoilt for choice with more than 1500
kilometres of well-marked bicycle routes –
and scenic landscapes ranging from the
alluvial forest on the Rhine river to the Mehlinger moorlands near Kaiserslautern.
In terms of a time-out from the
day-in-day-out routine, the thermal spas of
Bad Bergzabern and Bad Dürkheim or the
umpteen wellness hotels offer the ideal conditions for relaxation and “deceleration”.
Although there are many similarities, there are so
many diverse and unique aspects – that is the magic
of the Palatinate’s topography: The German Wine
Route with its historical and romantic vineyards
profit from the Mediterranean climate. This is
where exotic produce such as almonds, figs, kiwis
and the famous Palatinate chestnuts ripen in the
sun. Typical for the region are romantic, cobblestoned alleys meandering through wine villages
with castle ruins and châteaus fringing the border
with the Haardt mountain range. Together with the
North Vosges (French: Vosges du Nord), the Pfälzerwald Nature Park constitutes the Transfrontier Biosphere Reserve with its unique natural topography,
spectacular sandstone formations and innumerable
hiking, climbing and other leisure opportunities.
The highest mountain of the Palatinate,
the Donnersberg, dominates the Palatinate mountainscape and is the site of a Celtic village which
serves as a reminder of the region’s celtic history. But
this stretch of territory also has something to offer
the more athletic visitor, such as a once-in-a-lifetime bike trolley tour in the Kusel district. The
Rhine plain is indelibly etched with the wandering
Old Rhine, which both fosters this paradise of
nature and nurtures the wide fecund fields on which
asparagus, strawberries and tobacco grow copiously.
The city of Speyer with its world-famous Imperial
Cathedral (German: Kaiserdom – designated an
UNESCO world cultural heritage site), along with
its museums and historic old town, belong to the
most brilliant cultural attractions of the Palatinate.

The palatable Palatinate – land of
In terms of wine, no one outdoes the Palatinate winelands. Whether classics like
Riesling, Burgundy or Silvaner, globetrotters like Chardonnay and Sauvignon
Blanc or specialities such as “ice wine” and full-bodied sweeter rarities –
they all flourish on the sunny terracing slopes of the Haardt mountain range.
Wine and culture: The Villa Ludwigshöhe in
Edenkoben boasts magnificent views over
the sea of grape vines and displays the works
of expressionist painter Max Slevogt.

A barrel full of superlative Palatinian wines
During its two thousand years of viticultural history, the
“Pfälzer” have left hardly a superlative rock unturned. The
Dürkheimer Giant Barrel, built in 1934, draws millions of
tourists today and the adjacent Dürkheim sausage market
is simply an invitation to indulge. Altogether, it is the biggest wine festival in the world. Among the nearly 200 wine
festivals organised in the Palatinate each year are some
record-breaking candidates: the one-of-kind experience
known as the German Wine Route is most certainly one
of the longest wine festivals in the world – 85 kilometres
of oenophilic delights. And the annual Vineyard Festival
Parade threading its way through the streets of Neustadt
during the German Grape Harvest Festival is the longest wine parade.
And if that wasn’t enough: The oldest wine in the
world (dating from the 3rd century A.D., from the oldest still producing terraced vineyard – 1650 in Rhodt),
the oldest wine route, the first educational ‘wine trail’
and the most extensive viticulture-based economic
community – these are the legacies of the Palatinate
that are documented in the Palatinate’s Guinness
Book of Wine Record, amongst others.
Grapes as far as the eye
can see: The Palatinate is
the second-largest
wine-growing region in
Germany.
“Live. Laugh. Enjoy.
PALATINATE. This is where I’m at home.”
Laura Julier, Palatinate Wine Queen 2014/2015
But the talk here is not just about quantitative successes –
of the essence is quality. The Palatinate ranks today as the most
innovative viticultural region within Germany and verifies it by
winning the top awards in competition. Those prizes certainly go
a long way in helping the region overcome any inferiority complexes
about only being the second-largest wine-growing area in the
German Wine Route vicinity.
Savouring wine – a half litre at a time
The citizens of the Palatinate may be happy souls, however, the
joking stops when it comes to “schoppen”. Basically an unadorned
half-litre tube of glass, the Schoppen is a textbook example illustrating the principle of “form follows function”. Because, you see,
the Schoppen glass facilitates maximization of long-term
wine-drinking pleasure. A half a litre fits therein, and that is
exactly what makes the Schoppen into the emblem incarnate of
German traditional wine(festival) enjoyment. In this region where
Schoppen glasses are still the real half-litre volume deal, drinking
means a double measure of fun in every glass. That’s why the love
of the populace for this particular drinking vessel is so widespread
that its fans even dedicated an equally ponderous line to commemorate it: On the walls in the city of Maikammer, the following
is unashamedly touted: “Palatinate Schoppen – the measure of all
things”.
The Schoppen is more than a glass: it is an icon embodying above all else both social qualities and socialisation, because
the enjoyment of wine a litre at a time is indeed a type of regional
parlour game. Many a visiting guest has drunk his or her first
Schoppen with a certain degree of discomfiture – only to relate
wistfully and rapturously later on in his hometown about this intriguing Palatinate idiosyncrasy.

10EnjoyPalatinate
Simply for the sake of
The Palatinate heartily invites you to forget the day-in-day-out of life and
simply enjoy the moment by partaking in a glass of fine wine and relishing
a hearty meal from the excellent regional cuisine. After all, the best ingredients
grow right here locally. So there’s really no need to wonder why the gregarious
people of the Palatinate understand the concept of celebration so well –
and why they want guests to participate.
enjoyment
The citizenry of the Palatinate
love to celebrate – and they
love to invite visitors to join in.
Celebrating celebrations
Fig paradise Palatinate
Whether the Almond Blossom Festival or “Bürstenbinderkerwe (“Cask Maker”) wine festival, Kaisertafel street banquet or the Sickinger Grumbeeremarkt (potato market),
between March to the beginning of November, no weekend
goes uncelebrated – and each with its highly rustic name,
unique and exceptional programme and lots of “local colour”. At these festivals, the wine flows freely – sometimes
around-the-clock – and many are hosted with flamboyantly
illuminated wine terraces as backgrounds for the festivities.
The world’s largest wine festival, the tradition-rich Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt, is just one of some 200 wine festivals
held annually. Under these circumstances, one can really
become “drunk with happiness”!
Nothing against apples, which, by the way, also grow magnificently here, but… as far as being a “fruit ambassador”
testifying to the Mediterranean-mild climate of the Palatinate, there are better candidates. As a companion along the
same Biblical lines as the apple – but without the downside
connotations – is the fig. Figs grow here in greater numbers
than can be found anywhere else in Germany. Growing
along and amid the German Wine Route and throughout
the Vorderpfalz region are approximately 50,000 fig trees.
Where figs grow, then in most cases almonds are not far
removed. As harbingers of spring, almond trees may even
start blooming their soft-pink flowers (upper leaves) as early
as the end of February, adding colour to the greys of winter.

Approximately 50,000 fig trees grow in the Palatinate.
In the autumn, when the “new wine” is being
offered everywhere, there is yet another southern-style culinary pleasure to be enjoyed: The
“Keschde” as the locals call the Palatinate
chestnuts, are finally ripe.
To the delight of the residents here,
this indigenous delicacy not only ripens at the
edge of the Haardt mountain hill country, but
also in the Rhine plains and on the slopes of
the Donnersberg Mountain. One favourite
local speciality is roast goose with chestnut
stuffing. The tourists who enjoy roast chestnuts
will be in seventh heaven and those hiking

along the “Pfälzer Keschdeweg” will learn
many interesting facts about this Mediterranean immigrant. Those doubting Thomases out
there who are still sceptical about the special
climate boasted by the Palatinate should
inspect the kiwis in the gardens, the fruit-bearing lemon trees or ask for Palatinate melons at
the local markets. Yes, it is true!
Advent in the Palatinate – luminous and resplendent, the sweet
aroma of mulled wine wafting between vineyards, forests and the Rhine.
Advent in the Palatinate – candles lit, romantically illuminated cobblestone streets of historic
old town centres, lovingly decorated nativity
scenes, rough-timber kiosks of the many and
oh-so-unique Christmas markets of the region.
As early as mid-November, the anticipated joys of the holiday season can barely be
contained – this is what makes a visit to the
Palatinate in the cold season an experience that
pays rich dividends. Whether indulgently enjoying the Yuletide pleasures during the “Kunigundenmarkt”, the locally unique Christmas
market in Neustadt, wandering through the historic monastic scenery in the Hornbach Abbey
or soaking in the atmosphere of the half-timbered village of Jockgrim, celebrating the
romance at the Haßloch Christmas market and
its thousand lights – or – simply serenely celebrating this season of contemplation in the
classical fashion in Speyer, Grünstadt or Bad
Bergzabern – there is something for everyone’s
taste here. To celebrate the Christmas season in
the “Haus der Nachhaltigkeit” – the “Sustainability House” in Johanniskreuz is to celebrate
closeness to nature and regionally typical products – all products are “Bio” quality and originate for the most part from the biosphere
reserve of Palatinate Forest/ North Vosges. Stick
bread is toasted over the camp fire while fire
acrobats provide the best entertainment for the
guests. Likewise, the torchlight, torées (a big
fire in a pasture) and camp fires in Hauenstein
create an especially warm and cosy atmosphere.
The quality level of goods, wine and
victuals at many Palatinate Christmas markets
is very high, for example, as in Deidesheim,
where only mulled wine from the local
wine-growers is offered to guests and where a
carefully balanced palette of works from artisans and jewellers as well as gastronomic products are sold at the vendor stalls. Most markets
are easily accessed via the regional public transit system so no hurdles stand in the way of a
relaxed pre-Christmas shopping trip or a simple
stroll through the enchanting, festively decorated venues and municipalities of the Palatinate.

markets can be found at: www.pfalz.de/

The Palatinate is a paradise for gourmets and
gourmands. Besides hearty regional kitchen
favourites, the master chefs of the Palatinate
also prepare a multitude of other innovative
dishes. The end result: sophisticated star gastronomic creations on the table. That’s no wonder because here in the Palatinate “vegetable
garden of Germany”, the freshest ingredients
grow abundantly and are delivered direct to the
kitchens without long transportation distances.

Those acquainted with high-brow alcoholic
specialities have long known that fine fruits
prepared as distilled beverages enhance dietary
enjoyment. Distillations composed of pears,
mirabelles (small yellow plums), apricots or
vineyard peaches and, of course, the aromatic
wine or grape marc from the Palatinate, are
cherished by connoisseurs and are celebrated as
digestifs to help digestion after a hearty course
of Palatinate dishes
Sometimes homesickness just
means you miss the Saumagen…
The typical reaction of an “extrapalatinate”
visitor after encountering the region’s “national
dish” often begins with a verbal ejaculation
that can’t be reprinted here. After which, the
guest will confess that he actually always wanted to try “Saumagen” (stuffed pig’s stomach),
but he/she just never had the stomach for it.
But, beware to he who conjures up the courage
to try this dish despite its misleading name:
once you turn your fork and knife to this local
delicacy, you will miraculously transform from
a Saumagen scoffer to a Saumagen lover. Such
a culinary epiphany could hardly have been imagined by the farmer folk settled in Westrich
some 300 years ago when they first cut pota-
toes in cubes, mixed them with bits of meat
and all types of spices and stuffed this amalgamation into a meticulously cleaned pig stomach, which was then boiled for many hours in
boiling water. The Saumagen was thus born
and has even found a home in this day and age
as a member in the fine cuisine family.
Some examples of Saumagen incarnations include “Milchferkelmagen” (truffled milk
piglet stomach), Saumagen filled with chestnuts,
or Saumagen Carpaccio and many more.

The citizenry of the Palatinate love to hike. And it’s no wonder with 12,000
kilometres of marked walking trails, more than 1,000 kilometres of pilgrimage
footpaths and the largest contiguous forest area in Germany, namely, the
Palatinate Forest biosphere nature park. And there where the woods end at the
edge of the Haardt forest is where Palatinate wine grows.

Hiking in the Palatinate – that’s experiencing nature in first-class! The only difficult
part is deciding which trail: the Pfälzerwald
Nature Park with its romantic castle ruins
and imposing sandstone boulder terrain, or
the Palatinate wine country with its nearly
Mediterranean vegetation and picturesque
wine-making villages, or in the Palatinate
mountainscape comprised of gently rolling
hills steeped in Celtic history, dotted with
quaint little towns and offering massive
vistas. Not to be forgotten is the Auwälder
and Bienwald nature reserves in the Rhine
plain which serve as reminders of the primeval history of the region. And because a particularly mild climate dominates in the Palatinate, one can still step into the hiking
boots here when there is a heavy snow blanket on trails in other parts of Europe.

WINTER: Take advantage of the mild climate that
enables the Palatinate to be the year-round hiking
destination that it is and enjoy the spirit of Christmas
during the Christmas market in the biospheric park in
Johanniskreuz.
There are more than 100 hospitable hikers‘ huts and cabins in the
Palatinate Forest, which, by the way, is the largest interconnected forest
area in Germany. A stop for refreshment is almost a mandatory itinerary
item during a stay in the Palatinate. In some of the camping huts operated
by the Palatine Forest Club (German: Pfälzerwald-Verein) and the
Friends of Nature (abbreviation: NFI, for German: Naturfreunde International), the hikers can even sleep over – most of these are located in the
middle of the forest, such as the huts at Hüttenbrunnen in Edenkoben
Valley, in Kohlbachtal near Lambrecht or in the Hilschberghaus near
Rodalben. The fare served at a Palatinate hut is generally simple, hearty
and economical. In almost all camping huts, the following three items are
to be seen on the menu, constituting a de facto “Palatinate trinity”: liver
dumplings, Saumagen (stuffed pig‘s stomach) and bratwurst sausages.
Added to this may be Palatinate “Handkäs” (a specialty cheese) and
home-made sausages and cakes. And, of course, no happy camping hut
visit is complete without a “Schoppen” of Palatinate wine.

The Palatinate hiking menu –
trekking for pleasure,
trekking with quality seal
If you want to hike in the Palatinate, then a richly laid table
awaits you. The Palatinate “hiking menu” encompasses over 30
completely diverse paths, all of which are excellently marked, have been
awarded the quality seal, and comprise almost 1,000 kilometres of walking
adventure. The three quality-seal long-distance paths are supplemented by
29 certified short tours, most of which are laid out as round-trip walking
paths. With lengths ranging between 7 and 90 km, these trails can either be
walked as single-day trips or multiple-day trips or even combined with one
of the long-distance trails.
Pfälzer Waldpfad
The approximately 142 kilometre long Palatinate Forest Trail (“Pfälzer
Waldpfad”) threads through the very heart of the Pfälzerwald Nature
Park. Discover the silence of natural stillness, impressive horizonspanning panoramas, romantically untamed valleys and the spectacular sandstone formations of the Dahner Felsenland
Pfälzer Weinsteig
With its 170 kilometres, the “Pfälzer Weinsteig” is both the longest
leg of the Palatinate trails as well as being its most demanding with
more than 12,000 metres of ascents and descents. However, the
piqued excitement you’ll experience when transitioning from robust
climbing sections to fairy-book forest glades to sunny passages in the
Palatinate ocean of grapevines makes it all worthwhile.
Pfälzer Höhenweg
Nowhere else in the Palatinate can a hiker climb so high as here on
the 112 kilometre long “Pfälzer Höhenweg” (meaning Palatinate
high trail), reaching its apogee at the 687-metre high peak of the
Donnersberg. The Pfälzer Höhenweg is characterised by an open
landscape of rolling hills with wide-ranging vistas, small wooded
areas and picturesque villages.

This is the stuff that
medieval knight romance is made of
In the Palatinate, the Middle Ages come alive! Because
in no other tract of land in Germany can one find so
many castle ruins, many of which originate from the
times of the Staufers or the Salian emperors. Still jutting up against the sky are the keeps and castle walls of
some 80 former defence structures and they still
enthral both hikers and medieval fans alike. Nothing
excites the imagination more than the many sagas,
legends and myths revolving around these relics of a
past era – simply give free rein to your longing for a bit
of knightly romance!
The Palatinate – room with a view
The Palatinate Forest is one of just 440 UNESCO protected areas in the entire world. Black woodpeckers (Dryocopus martius), wildcats (Felis silvestris) and even lynxes can be found here. In order to preserve this
breathtaking landscape, the nature park partners conceived the “Fahrtziel Natur” (Destination Nature) in
alliance with the public transportation system and several certified “hiker transport stations” (Wanderbahnhöfen) to provide sustainable mobility within the nature
protection zone. Now, you can really enjoy your next
holiday knowing you’re in harmony with nature!
www.fahrtziel-natur.de
The visitors to the region have even more opportunities to witness breathtaking panoramas due to the
fact that Mother Nature is still untouched here.
Thanks to Germany’s first visual range monitoring
station, one can even receive information via SMS
or e-mail about the current visibility range on the
highest peak of the Palatinate Forest, the Kalmit.

Welcome to the saddle
The Palatinate is a cyclist’s paradise – and you have the choice: something like
the “Kraut & Rüben” bike trail (meaning cabbages and carrots), or the
“Glan-Blies” bike trail or the “Veloroute Rhine”. It doesn’t matter whether
you’re on a trekking bike or a mountain bike, alone, with a friend, or travelling
with the whole kit and caboodle, everyone agrees on one thing: there is no
shortage of well-marked trails here regardless on the trail’s level of difficulty.

MTB fans can run wild on the close-to-nature

Mountain Bike Park (German: Mountainbikepark Pfälzerwald). The more athletically
ambitioned riders can test their stuff in the
Palatinate Forest Mountain Bike Park, while
others may want to take it more comfortably
on an e-bike or pedal-and-feast during one of
the auto-free Discovery Days: In the Palatinate, there is something for everyone!
With the wind at your back
through the Palatinate
Even if confronted with uphill climbs, headwinds or longer-than-comfortable distances
– an e-bike enables you to leisurely discover
the Palatinate on two wheels. A network of
rental stations makes it easy for visitors to
ride “with the wind at your back” even if they
didn’t bring their own e-bikes. Inclined grades
are tackled without a problem and when the
battery power level sinks low enough, there
are more than 90 charging stations to
recharge – both the bicycle’s battery as well as
a refreshing drink for the rider.

The epitome of “holiday feeling”: rolling on the
river - when biking on the Rhine plains, you may
want to cross the river with the ferry.
Palatinate Forest Mountain Bike Park –
the mecca for “pathfinders”
The interplay between soft, sandy soil, well distributed roots and well-worn-and-rounded sandstone
blocks make the sparsely populated Palatinate
Forest an optimal mountain bike recreation area.
This playground for MTB enthusiasts is veined with
long “flowing” trails that offer a virtually infinite
number of combinations and guarantee riding fun.
Awarded four stars by the “Deutschen Initiative Mountainbike”, the Palatinate Forest Mountain Bike Park (German: Mountainbikepark Pfälzerwald) has long been established as a top-notch MTB
region and contains one of just two certified
“Premium Bike Trail Tours” located in Germany.
Events such as the “Gäsbock Marathon” or the
“Sleepless in Saddle” offer both novices as well as
technically skilled, experienced bikers the opportunity to test both their mettle and their metal against
spectacular trails with “addictive potential”. Special
lengths of trail, such as challengingly laid-out
single-track and parcours technique training trails
as well as a dirt-bike park, compliment the spectrum
of Palatinate Forest trails and literally make it a
region for “pathfinders”.

“Bicycle Discovery Days” in the Palatinate
If you’re one of those who prefer to link their calorie burning with their calorie consumption, then the Bicycle
Discovery Days in the Palatinate were invented for you.
Sociable and stress-free biking on partially
blocked-for-cars streets combined with the enjoyment of
regional food and beverages – that is the quintessence of
the Palatinate Bicycle Discovery Days. Pleasure and joie
de vivre are emphasised here, that’s why there is hardly
any other holiday region in Germany that can boast so
many festivals for bicyclists, inline skaters and walkers.
The “Erlebnistag Deutsche Weinstraße” is certainly the
best known Bicycle Discovery Day. Taking place on the
last Sunday of each August, it entices several hundred
thousand guests to the 85 kilometre long stretch between
Bockenheim in the north and Schweigen-Rechtenbach
in the south at the border to Alsace.

An experience for the
A veritable cornucopia of Palatinate treasures lies ready to be discovered:
blossoming gardens, magnificent castles and châteaus, a Celtic village and Roman
villa, a trail through the treetops and a ride on a steam train: With such a high
calibre array of leisure activities, there’s something for everyone, whether that be a
heart-racing ride in an amusement park, a leisurely stroll through the Wild Park or
a visit to one of a multitude of points of interest, such as the UNESCO world
heritage site Speyer Cathedral or the “cradle of German democracy”, namely the
Hambach Castle.
Fun for grownups and
kids alike: a family outing
with the handcar trolleys.
whole family
Regardless of whether you are travelling on foot,
bike, or car, whether you are looking for culture,
leisure time fun or athletic challenges, the
Palatinate is richly endowed with everything a visitor could desire in terms of diversified leisure
activities. The castle ruins erupt impressively
heavenward above the treeline of the Palatinate
Forest and are a veritable paradise for the explorer,
but even older Roman and Celtic eras (more than
2000 years old) are yet tangible here. Visitors to
the Palatinate can spend time in a restored Roman
winepress house and learn how grapes were
processed in the Roman times. The life of the
Celts, their magic and mysticism, comes alive at
the Celtic village on the slopes of the Donners-
berg. This nation of people had set up one of the
largest city settlements of that time here on the
Palatinate’s highest mountain. All this and much
more can be discovered by foot, bicycle, e-bike or
even on horseback by making use of one of the 25
Palatinate horseback/hiking stations. In the Palatinate Forest, in the German Wine Route and even
on the Donnersberg – idyllic golf courses invite
you to tee-off. Horse-cart and covered wagon
rides, rail lines just for handcars, climbing parks,
bathing lakes and a whole hodgepodge of small
and original museums guarantee that boredom
doesn’t stand a chance in the Palatinate!

An unforgettable day
with the whole family
Whether totally relaxed strolling through the
Wild Park or the stork park, deep down in the
“visitor mine” or high up among the treetops of
the Palatinate Forest – the Palatinate offers
many options for daytrips and excursions with
kith and kin. For those who prefer a bit more
action, try an adrenaline rush on the roller
coasters in Holiday Park, an athletic challenge
in the outdoor climbing facilities of Adventure
Park Fun Forest, Kandel or go wild in the adventure playground at the “Teufelstisch” near
Hinterweidenthal. If the weather is not cooperating, then immerse yourself in the exotic world
of reptiles at the “Reptilium Terrarien- und
Wüstenzoo” in Landau, experiment in the
“Dynamikum” in Pirmasens or visit Europe’s
biggest space and aeronautics exhibition in the
Technik Museum Speyer.

The Palatinate is a source of joy for art enthusiasts
with many museums, music festivals, galleries and
buildings steeped in history, such as the Hambach
Castle a.k.a. the “cradle of German democracy” or
the fortress in Germersheim with its subterranean
network of passages. Music is always in the air:
Whether classical music events, such as Abbey concerts in the Roman monastery church of Otterberg,
the musical season of the Pfalztheater in Kaiserslautern or the Art Nouveau Festival Hall in Landau;
whether the diverse cultural Open-Air programmes
at the lakes, or in the intimate and cosy old town
squares and on idyllic stages fringing the forests, or
“Palatia Jazz” playing at historic venues – there’s
something for culture enthusiasts the year-round in
the Palatinate. And, naturally, all combined with
select Palatinate wines and fine regional dishes.
Palatinate on the water
With certainty the most famous river in Germany, the
Rhine combines a primevally pristine natural paradise
with a 2,000-year old cultural history – all this as it
flows through its Palatinate section between the
French border near Lauterbourg and the Nibelung
City of Worms. The alluvial forest here is a landscape
of inimitable excitement with its lush vegetation,
beckoning quarry ponds and the cut-off, meandering
arms of the Old Rhine river that evoke daydreams of
Huck Finn. Decide for yourself whether you want to
swim, sail, or canoe; or maybe just lie in the sun for a
while. A barque excursion on the Old Rhine is a very
special outdoor experience for the entire family. Even
an oared sojourn on the true-to-original reconstructed
Roman ship “Lusoria Rhenana” is possible here – tons
of fun and with a historic background as well!
Just a few kilometres downstream is the
more than 2000-year old imperial city of Speyer, which
promises to enchant visitors with the coexistence of its
living history and the joie de vivre for the present age.
Among other sights to see, the city harbours the
mighty imperial cathedral, the Kaiserdom, built in
1030 by the Holy Roman Salian emperor Conrad II
and today an UNESCO world cultural heritage site.
Many Rhine cruise ships set anchor here thereby offering their passengers the opportunity to experience the
Mediterranean flair of the Palatinate in the winding
alleys of Speyer’s old town.

Get away + switch off
Enjoyment and relaxation are not just buzzwords here in the Palatinate. The
Palatinate offers the ideal prerequisites for this: the indigenes’ ability to find
pleasure in the moment and the magnificent natural countryside. And certainly
a thermal spa bath, a massage with grape seed oil, or a Kneipp “walking
hydrotherapy” can only help reinforce that taking of joy in life! The Palatinate
is the ideal environment to bring body and mind in harmony.
The Palatinate’s thermal baths in Bergzabern
make it easy to forget day-to-day cares.
Upper: Refreshing: A therapy in the
saline baths in Bad Dürkheim is good
for lungs and bronchi.
Middle: 25 hydrotherapy treatment
facilities in the Palatinate invite visitors
to get healthy naturally.
Lower: A real kick for the kids is a visit
to one of the many barefoot
water-paths.
Breathe deep
in Bad Bergzabern country
The two spa health resorts in Bad Bergzabern
and Bad Dürkheim as well as the “città slow”
city of Deidesheim and the modern wellness
hotels of the surrounding region leave nothing
to desire as they unite relaxation, recovery,
enjoyment, awareness of one’s mental and meditative state with competent medical consultation. The philosophy of the hotels in the
“wellVINess” cooperative combines the therapeutic values of wine and its enjoyment with a
wellness spectrum of the highest echelon –
without neglecting the congenial regional
aspects of the Palatinate.
The medicinal therapy palette in Bad Bergzabern
ranges from traditional Kneipp bath treatments
up to the latest physiotherapies; the clinics and
practices are specialised in a diverse variety of
diagnostics and therapeutic regimens.
Bad Bergzabern is a recognised and
state-approved “therapeutic air spa” with a gently
stimulating climate for the lungs. Persons suffering from allergies and respiratory diseases know
very well the benefits of this facility in its richly
wooded environment.
The Petronella spring in Bad Bergzabern
is simultaneously a source of curative water and a
medicinal product. The health-promoting water
bubbles forth from a depth of 450 metres into the
basins of the Südpfalz Thermal Springs. The
thermal spa induces guests to forget their everyday stress for a while by partaking in the water,
warmth and wellness. A sojourn here refills your
body’s energy tank and bestows a feeling of
“relaxation deluxe”.

The gentle approach to health
The Kurzentrum Bad Dürkheim health spa centre is earmarked
by its many years of experience with applications of “wellbeing”, medical wellness and classic therapies.
Wellness and conventional health spa therapy goes
hand in hand. Above all, the health-bolstering benefits of
salt-containing mineral water have been used for more than
150 years. Application of healing practices in the health spa
centre or gymnastic exercise in the thermal movement baths
under medical supervision helps alleviate rheumatism and
pains related to intervertebral discs and other spinal ailments.
Stone therapies, Ayurveda massage, “singing bowl” sound
massage therapy or cranio-sacral therapy stimulate the
body’s self-healing powers and release blockages.
And a subsequent visit to the saline air spa will
certainly be doing something good for his or her respiratory passages. Saline water trickles out from a mineral
spring and flows over gigantic walls and thereby exerts a
positive influence on the lungs and bronchi.

Kneipp hydrotherapy paths in the Palatinate
Walking and water jets according to the Kneipp method – this
combination is practised at seven Kneipp hydrotherapy paths
situated between Grünstadt, Carlsberg and Ramsen, which, taken
altogether, put 21 Kneipp facilities at your disposal. The walking
tours bear melodious names, such as Cherry trail or Stream trail,
Wine trail or Marathon trail, “Eisbachtal” or “Bockbachtal” trails,
and one can select a distance ranging from 5.5 to 26.2 kilometres.
All along the edges of the walking paths are Kneipp facilities –
most are arm dip basins, but there are also large basins in which
one can wade knee-deep in cold water. This preliminary walking
movement prepares the body to undergo a Kneipp cure. “Every
cold water application triggers a warm body reaction”, states an
experienced Kneipp enthusiast. And by the way: “Kneippen” on
all seven hydrotherapy trails is “naturally” free-of-charge.
