LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Happy Birthday to Us!
It seems hard to believe, but this August will be the
17th Anniversary for Papa’s Pantry. Where have all
the years gone?
Each summer we generally plan a Birthday Bash
event, each year having a different flair. Three of the
most memorable celebrations were when we had a big
park shin-dig complete with vendors, food, and live
music, had a dinner/ picnic in our parking lot, and last
year’s party was in a booth at the Woodstock Farmer’s
Market.
This year, I would like to invite you to invite me
to your home, business, or place of worship! Invite
your family, friends, and colleagues to hear more about
Papa’s history, mission, and the wide variety of
services that everyone in the community can tap into.
Kids will also be going back to school in August. (I
think the kids are getting robbed, by the way… isn’t it
called ‘summer vacation?) In preparation to help
families with kids who cannot afford necessary BackTo-School items, there are a couple of options in which
you can help. 1) Give A Kid A Chance for kids in
Cherokee County, (see page 22), 2) Milford Church of
God in West Cobb and 3) Papa’s happily accepts back
packs and school supplies for the families we serve who
aren’t registered in time for other programs and those
who live outside Cherokee. (Papa’s families primarily
come from Cherokee, Cobb, and Bartow counties.)
Donations are needed in July.
“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble
themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from
their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I
will forgive their sin and will heal their land. Now my
eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers
offered in this place.” 2 CHRONICLES 7:13-15
Thank you for the many years of prayers and support
for Papa’s Pantry. I look forward to serving with you
in our upcoming 18th year!
Love and Blessings,
Lynne
This July our nation celebrates Independence Day, or
July 4th. Let us sing loud and strong all month, “God
Bless America!” Let it be our prayer as well as our
statement that our hope and faith are in the Lord!
Two scriptures come to mind:
“Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and
not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
ISAIAH 40:31 (NIV)

individuals and families
re-establish stability and self-reliance
by offering a variety of
programs including immediate food assistance, employment strategies, and
life skills through hands-on
support and ongoing training.
Christian Community News (CCN) is published every 2
months by “Papa’s Pantry”, Inc., a 501c3 non-profit, organized
in 1998, that works with families who have experienced a
setback, providing food assistance when food is at risk in the
household and stability training to help them stabilize.
Recognizing that “man does not live by bread alone, but by
every word of God,” (Dt 8:3) The Master’s Training Center,
the Pantry’s education division, offers mentoring, classes and
coaching for all families in the areas of employment strategies, money management, goal setting, time management,
computer skills, nutrition, organic gardening & bible studies.
Please consider Papa’s Pantry in your monthly giving. We
depend on local financial support to continue to offer stability

Christian churches are defined as those who believe in the
Trinity of God the Father, Jesus the Son of God, and the Holy
Spirit. Jesus Christ was conceived by the Holy Spirit and was
born of a virgin. He was crucified, died, resurrected, and is
now seated at the right hand of God the Father as our Savior,
Redeemer, and Intercessor. Salvation is found only through
Him. Forgiveness and new birth is available to all who believe.

THANK YOU TO OUR
EVENT SPONSORS
“BELLA NOTTE” WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE
WITHOUT THEIR HELP
Each year we invite some of the families who
have successfully gone through the Papa’s
Programs. This year we invited five who have
done just great! At the last minute, only one lovely
lady was able to attend… the others could not be a
part because they had to work! Not only do we
teach people how to effectively get a job, but we
teach them how to be a great employee! (Great
employees get overtime!)
As far as the event was concerned, we hoped that
the audience could personally meet more families
and hear their stories… But, what a wonderful
testimony it was to the successful outcomes of our
programs. People who came to Papa’s unemployed
turned their desperate situations around quickly;
for many, within weeks.
Papa’s was able to raise almost $15,000. This
money will help give access to meat, milk and
produce to hungry families in the Papa’s Programs.
It will also help ensure that necessary stability
training and coaching will be available. Without
this proven combination of help, hundreds of
families each year would not have the tools to
achieve success.
Thank you to all our supporters and sponsors. YOU
make all the difference!!

very summer, almost daily, Papa’s
Pantry
receives
donated
bushels
and bags of wonderful garden
fresh vegetables… juicy tomatoes, crisp peppers, squash,
zucchini, and of course eggplant and beans! Many back
yard gardeners are happy to
share what they have grown,
and are excited to know that
local families in need are able
to get fresh nutritious food!
Papa’s Pantry also has an organic garden made up of
above-ground boxes to not
only help feed the families
who come to Papa’s, but to
also teach folks how easy it is
to grow organically. If there
is an empty pot, bucket,
burlap sack, or bale of hay
(yes, really), we’ll find a way
to get something to grow in it!
Two other organizations have
been faithful to help the
cause.
They are “God’s
Garden” and “The Cherokee
Master Gardeners,” both with
committed groups of volunteers that do everything from
breaking ground, planting
seeds, to the weeding, watering, and constant harvest. As
you can imagine in these hot
days of summer, it is work,
but it brings such a feeling of
accomplishment and reward.
Just to know that one more
child won’t go to bed hungry
tonight is enough to keep
these hobbyists going!
God’s Garden began approximately 10 years ago when a

man from a Hillside UMC’s
Adult Sunday School class met
Norman, (age 84) while he was
volunteering at the Cherokee
Senior Services Center. Norman needed help with light
lawn care for his 3-acre property which also had 15-20 apple
and pear trees. This man
volunteered.
As their friendship grew week
after week, the volunteer helper and his recruited friends
realized that fruit growing on
the trees was not being
harvested, and was simply
rotting. It was decided that
the following year they would
pick the fruit and give it to
local food pantries. During that
time, one of these men was
volunteering at Papa’s Pantry.
Papa’s Pantry received apples
from that first haul and has
been receiving food ever since.

Letter after letter was sent to
Norman, thanking him for
sharing out of his abundance.
This touched his heart. As he
was praying one night, he felt
that God told him to replant
his old garden so he could give
more. He was reminded of a
time when he didn’t have food
and was hungry.
Norman
asked the Sunday School class
if they would help to plant his
garden. Of course, they agreed!
Several years later, in 2010,
Norman became very ill. He
passed away in February of
2011. His family planned to
sell or lease the home and
property, so God’s Garden
relocated to its current space
off Sixes Road, very near Exit
11 off I-575.

approximately one acre of land
that they are able to use at no

This is the fourth year at this
current location.
Volunteers
plant what is donated in whatever is donated. Kids in several
Cherokee County elementary
schools planted tomato seeds for
the garden.
Some of these
plants are growing on the property. Many of the tomato plants
have been donated to several of
the local food distribution nonprofits. Papa’s Pantry has
received several, which have
been planted in our own organic
garden, given to kids and families who attended Kids Camp in
June, and are available to our
clients, or anyone who wants
one or some (while supplies
last).
The folks at God’s Garden are
creative at repurposing items
found. What is the saying, “One
man’s junk in another man’s
treasure.”? There are two baby
swimming pools that are filled
with dirt and lots of tomato
plants! Last year, two youths
from Turnaround Ministries
built their first raised beds.
Next year, it is planned that the
garden spot will relocate to land
on the other side of Sixes Road.

larly are The Master Gardeners from the Cherokee County
Extension office, which is in
partnership with The University of Georgia. Last year they
brought 338 pounds to Papa’s
Pantry!
The County Extension office is
available to the community to
answer any gardening questions and conduct soil testing.
Each year, before planting your
vegetable plot, it is good to
have the soil tested to detect
any imbalances of minerals and
nutrients. These can easily be
added to ensure a healthy crop.
If you don’t have your own
garden spot, you can join the
Community Garden program
and plant your own vegetables
there. Its just $20 a year, for a
4’ x 16’ plot. The Community
Garden is located at 1001
Univeter Road in Canton
The County Extension also offers a variety of classes.
Coming up on August 29 there
will be a “Sun and Shade
Gardening” class at 10:00 am.
The instructor with help to
guide you in the proper placement of plants to make them
thrive.
You need to preregister at 770-721-7803 by August 26.
Do you remember reading
about Norman from God’s
Garden?
As it turns out,
UGA’s new National Resource
Agent in Cherokee County,
Josh Fuder, bought Norm’s
homestead.
Now, isn’t that
just like God! Great hearts are

No Place Left Cherokee
By Vena Norton
E
arly in 2015, a handful of pastors and
community leaders came together to pray for
Cherokee County. From there, they began
sharing ideas with one another and decided
now was the time to act. Soon after the Christian
Coalition, “No Place Left Cherokee” was formed.
What began as a grass roots meeting of community
leaders, sharing a common goal – to see lives touched
by an encounter with God - ‘No Place Left Cherokee’
continues to grow and gain momentum.
The name originates from Romans Chapter 15. Here
the apostle Paul writes that he had finished his work
in the region, proclaiming the good news of the
Gospel, until there was ‘no place left’ that hadn’t
heard.
The idea first started to take root when Mark
McGoldrick, one of the coalition’s leaders attended an
‘Awaken’ Conference. Ministers, lay leaders and
Christian business men and women are challenged to
reach out and share the love of God with every
neighborhood, every apartment complex, every workplace and every school in their community.
Crossing denominational lines, the coalition offers a
variety of resources to the Christian community
throughout the year.
‘No Place Left Cherokee’ surveys local residents to
find out what topics interest them in relation to faith,
the Bible and spirituality.
Using a curriculum called T4T (Training for Trainers),
the coalition holds training workshops throughout the
year for both adults and teenagers interested in
starting 'lighthouse' groups in their neighborhood,
school or workplace.
T4T was developed by Ying Kai, an Asian American
missionary who witnessed unprecedented numbers of
'lighthouse' groups form, multiply and grow into new
communities of faith in China, blanketing the entire
nation.
July/August 2015
| Page 10
In May, the coalition hosted the pre-release of the
Kendrick brother’s latest movie, “War Room” in
Woodstock, (Sony TriStar Films. In theaters August
28th.) This venue is providing a platform to bring people
of different denominations together to hear what God is
doing in Cherokee County and to invite them to become
part of the coalition.
“Our goal is to encourage people to plant ‘lighthouses’ in
every neighborhood so there is no place left in
Cherokee County that has not heard the claims of Christ,
the truth of His Word and the love that He has for them”
explains Susan Montgomery, part of the coalition’s
leadership team.
The coalition meets monthly on Sunday afternoons. The
next meeting will be held July 12th from 2:30 – 4:30 at
Woodstock Community Church. All are welcome.

Finding Solitude in
Unexpected Places
By Kristen Loughman
encounter a lot!
I
recently returned from my
vacation; it was the trip of a
lifetime. My mother retired
in February and was given a
seven-day cruise of the Western
Mediterranean as her retirement
gift. Thankfully, she chose me to
tag along with her.
Being a great adventurer and
travel aficionada, I was thrilled at
the opportunity to take this
excursion. I had plans of grandeur.
I’d relax in the sun on the beaches,
speak with the locals and learn
about their culture, sit by the ship’s
pool, and enjoy the sweet time I
was given to spend with my
mother. It was going to be a time
of solitude, no connection to my
phone, email or Internet, and a
week away from the stresses of
work.
Unfortunately, with all of the
rushing and dashing to excursions
in three countries and five cities,
and ensuring we made it back to
the ship before it departed; having
hand sanitizer being thrust into my
hands what seemed to be every 30
minutes; and handling lost
luggage, flight delays and ticket
re-bookings that were done
incorrectly, what I thought was
going to be a stress free, relaxing
week of solitude, turned out to be a
trip from which I needed another
vacation. I’m sure many of you can
relate.
July/August 2015
About a week after I returned home,
I began reflecting on our trip. Did I
get the solitude I was looking for
when I embarked on this adventure?
I did find a few moments here and
there when I was able to be with God
and enjoy the beauty of His creation.
Looking over the breathtaking views
from the top of Capri, sitting at an
Italian bistro on the busy streets of
Rome, savoring French pastry and
gelato, walking on the beach in Monterosso, Italy, enjoying the splendor
of the massive cathedrals located
throughout the regions we travelled,
and most importantly cherishing the
time I spent with my mom.
As I was contemplating my solitude,
I reflected on how I work myself to
the bone day in and day out until I’m
in desperate need of a vacation.
When I take a vacation I’m exhausted
and usually choose to do something
where I’m going and going without
time to relax. When I return home,
the cycle begins again. What I’ve
learned from this trip is that I
should be seeking solitude every day
not just when I’m on vacation or a
holiday.
During my devotional times since my
return, God has been teaching me a
lot about solitude and what it truly
means. Throughout the New
Testament Jesus sought time alone
to speak to God, even in the midst of
the chaos and adversity he
encountered. And, did he ever
| Page 12
SAY YOU SAW IT IN
Two examples of Jesus seeking
solitude occurred after He fed the
5,000 and went up on a mountainside by himself and prayed
(Matthew 14:23) and when He was
about to be betrayed by Judas
Iscariot in the garden of Gethsemane, he went and prayed, crying
out in sorrow (Matthew 26:36-46).
As I’ve been thinking about these
verses the past few weeks, I’ve
asked myself where I can find
solitude in the midst of my daily
tasks. After all, if Jesus was able
to find it in the middle of his work
and adversity, I should be able to
do the same.
Solitude is different for each
person. As I’ve been seeking the
answer to this question, I’ve found,
quite interestingly, my solitude
isn’t found in the places you’d
think. I do find solitude during
my quiet time in the morning
while I’m reading my Bible and
seeking God’s direction for the
day, at the beach and in the quiet
of the mountains. However, I
mostly find peace and quiet in
uncommon places
I find stillness in the rumbling of
car engines and horns beeping
while I’m running. I find it when
I’m taking in the beauty that
surrounds me and marveling at
the masterpieces God creates in
the sky. I hear it in the perfectly
orchestrated sonnets the birds
sing daily. I find it when I’m sitting on a park bench with my eyes
closed feeling the warmth of the
“CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY NEWS” MAGAZINE
sun on my skin. It’s in the middle of choir rehearsal
when we sing a song that penetrates the deepest part
of my heart. I even find solitude when I’m surrounded by dozens of children screaming and playing while
I enjoy the tranquility of the falling water drops of a
nearby fountain These things renew my strength so
that I am able to continue to serve and love others no
matter what is going on around me, just as Jesus did.
So, as you plan your daily tasks or contemplate what
is missing in your daily life, ask yourself what solitude looks like to you and where you can fit it into
your routine. It is difficult to find that extra 30
minutes a day, but you can do it. I speak from experience when I say your solitude is well worth a schedule
adjustment. My most precious moments with God are
found in my times of solitude. When I don’t have
them, my life just isn’t the same.

“The Master’s Training Center Works!”
Most every day, people walk through the doors of
Papa’s Pantry, desperate, and in search of their next
meal. This story is about Joseph, a man who came in
humbly and embarrassed.
During that first meeting Joseph met with an
advocate. We learned that he was an honorably
discharged disabled Marine veteran who became a
civilian four years ago.
His appearance was disheveled like someone who
had given up all hope, his eyes were vacant, sad. His
experiences navigating through the VA left him hopeless and homeless. After losing his home and all his
possessions, he lived in his car for two of those years.
As bad as that all seemed, the worst part was losing
all faith and respect from his only daughter during
these deepest, darkest years. He lost all self respect.
He came to Papa’s looking for food. He walked out
with a week’s worth … and for the first time in years
he had HOPE! During his initial conversation with
his advocate, he learned about the Employment
classes and was eager to register.
Each day of training, more and more lightbulbs were
being lit. Joseph told everyone in the class how he
religiously sent out resumes, but his phone “was
silent.” It was hard for Joseph to believe he could be
a success story, especially after such a long series of
disappointments
Joseph faithfully came in for one-on-one meetings
with his coach. Through diligently working with
Faith, his trainer and success coach, he was able to
completely overhaul his resume. For the first time in
years he was getting responses from employers! And
an invitation to an
interview! Now
what?
Joseph bounded
in the door with
the great news.
We were able to
give him a beautiful suit to wear to the interview.
Faith continued to coach him on what to expect to
be asked and how to appropriately respond…
truthfully, positively, and confidently.
His first interview went so well that he was told to
go to the actual worksite for a second interview
with the company the next day. Unfortunately
when he arrived, he was told the position had
already been filled.
Faith encouraged him to keep going and not get
discouraged. Within days he had another interview with another company… and got the job!
Today, he is working and has transitioned his
training from employment to that of budgeting
with a financial goal of saving $1,000 in an emergency fund.
Joseph is just one of the many men and women
who have come through the Employment Strategies
class so far this year. 56% of them have gained jobs
and are working today. Praise the Lord!!
It is your financial gifts which “pay the way” for all
the “Josephs” to have the opportunity to take
action and make changes in their lives through The
Master’s Training Center. The impact of local
support and prayers for this ministry reach far
beyond even our own comprehension. <>< <><.

Seeds Thrift Store Branches Out
I
magine a place where
you can find baby
clothes and equipment, fashions for the
entire family, and furniture
for any room in your home,
and all of it at bargain prices. It's not your imagination, it's the new Seeds
Thrift Store located at 295
Molly Lane in Woodstock.
The store, which has operated since late 2006 as Baby
& More Thrift Store, has
been renovated and rebranded to reflect a greatly
enhanced inventory and
product selection. The store
specializes in quality, gently-used merchandise.
Items are donated by the
public with proceeds from
store sales going to support The HOPE Center, a local
non-profit pregnancy resource center providing hope
and resources for women in the community with unplanned pregnancies.
"People are very surprised when they visit our store,"
said Monti Price manager of Seeds. "Originally, we
specialized in baby clothes and supplies; but the generosity of our community has increased donations to
a wider variety of items and made the store a place
where everyone can shop and find bargains."
“I would describe Seeds as a boutique style thrift
store”, Assistant Manager, Alex Benson explains.
“Many don’t know that we’re open to the public, that
we have things for the whole family, and that we are
not a consignment shop. We carry high quality merchandise and take pride in keeping the store clean
and organized. Many people comment that it doesn't
look or feel like your typical thrift store. The clothing
is nice, current, and you can often find designer
clothing at thrift store prices.”

A recent visit to
Seeds found customers buying name
brand women's apparel, baby bedding,
and furniture. "Our
goal is to provide
quality merchandise
to everyone, and feed
back into a ministry
that helps the community in so many
ways. We love when
shoppers become donors, and donors become shoppers. Everyone wins." Price
says.
"The name Seeds reflects
growth....growth in
what we offer to the
public, and what
we're able to give back to The HOPE Center."
Volunteers are the heartbeat of Seeds Thrift Store.
Price says over 20 regular volunteers support her staff
weekly, with nearly 100 coming in over the course of a
year for special projects. "We can't do what we do without them. They are crucial to this ministry.”
Fall clothing will be making its way back in to the store
in July and their annual Back to School Sale will be held
July 31st and August 1, which is also Tax Free weekend.
Seeds Thrift Store is open Monday through Friday 10:00
am - 5:00 pm, and Saturdays 10:00 am - 4:00 pm.
Tax-deductible donations are accepted daily. For a list
of items they accept, visit their website at

Emergency Preparedness
Home
Invasion
By Tim Romashko
F
or some time now we have
been discussing different
elements of Emergency
Preparedness.
In this
column we have covered all sorts of
different aspects of being prepared.
Topics like what kind of foods to
store and how to store them,
generators, emergency ‘Go Bags,’
winter (and summer) preparedness
and even having your car ready for
each season. The one topic I have
intentionally avoided is firearms.
The use of firearms is a hot topic
these days given the recent news
headlines. All that being said, firearms are a part of your emergency
preparedness plan, however, they
are not the entire plan.
Some
people think that if they have a
gun, they are all set and no further
planning is required. Nothing could
be further from the truth.
Firearms are nothing more than a
tool in your chest of resources that
are available to you in the event of
an emergency. Having a firearm
when you are hungry does you no
good. At the same time, having a
great food supply is not going to
help if your home gets invaded by
bad guys.
Emergency preparedness is a
balance of what you might need
when that unplanned event
happens. We try to cover as many
bases as we can when working on
our personal preparedness plan.
July/August 2015
I am concerned that home invasions
in the northern Atlanta metro area
are on the rise. Not all of these bad
events are like the one recently in
Washington, DC where the whole
family was killed in an apparent
quest for lots of money. But make
no mistake, a home invasion is a
terrifying event. This kind of invasion can happen to any of us. You
may be well off in the financial
department and others may have
noticed, or you could be the victim of
mistaken identity, or just a random
victim. In any case, once the bad
guys storm your residence, you are
in a tough spot. If you are aware of
the threat, you have a chance to
prepare. Most people are optimistic
and think this kind of violence will
never happen to them so they don’t
prepare. I’m not suggesting that we
all move to a remote bunker somewhere. I do recommend that you
take a look at your residence with a
critical eye and start thinking like a
bad guy. How would you break into
your own house? How would the bad
guys do it?
Are the doors and
windows even locked? Do you have
glass in the front door or right next
to the door, so all they have to do is
break the glass and reach in and
unlock the door? Any of these very
easy tactics will allow the intruders
into your house in seconds. If you
are sleeping or otherwise occupied,
you will have very little time to
react. Having a home alarm system
that is monitored is a good start.
When everyone is in for the night,
| Page 18
SAY YOU SAW IT IN
set the alarm in “Instant trip” mode.
This means as soon as a door or
window on the exterior of the home
is opened (or broken) the alarm
starts screaming and dialing the
monitoring company. This commotion may scare off the would-be
invaders or it may just let you know
something is going on and give you
more time to react.
The big question is what to do next?
Now that you are aware of someone
trying to gain entry to your home
without your permission. Having a
home or cell phone right next or the
bed is very important! If you don’t
have a monitored alarm, a phone is
the only chance to call for assistance.
If you are a guy with a gun, you
probably think you have this
situation well in hand even though
you may not have shot the gun in
months or years. If you are a guy,
you probably think you don’t need
firearms training either. Training
may be thought of for sissy’s who
have not seen at least 4 good movies
by Clint Eastwood, Bruce Willis,
Arnold Schwarzenegger or have
titles like The Matrix or Avatar.
Ladies, on the other hand, generally
realize that they do not know how
firearms work and will ask for help
and will take training. Most of my
best students are female. As a firearms instructor, I see this all the
time; guys are not prepared to
defend themselves because their ego,
many times, gets in the way.
“CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY NEWS” MAGAZINE
When was the last time you actually pulled that gun
out and looked at it? Cleaned it? Shot it? And when
was the last training class?
Shooting is a depreciable skill. You can’t just learn it
once and know it forever. We equate shooting skills to
speaking a foreign language. If you do not use your
foreign language skills, you will lose them.
In summary, you need to have a plan that the entire
family knows and does not discuss with others. What
exactly are you going to do if your home is invaded?
Where are the communication devices? Are they
charged? Where are the firearms and who has access?
Are they loaded? Are they safely away from the kids?
When was the last time you trained with or cleaned
that tool of self-defense?
Make a plan, get some additional training. We all
need this. Even experienced instructors take more
training classes. We all need to stay sharp and we all
can learn from others. Guns are not for everybody. If
you are new to firearms, get a class from an experienced instructor. Having a family member or close
friend show you how to shoot is fine but you need to
hear about all the necessary safety precautions as well.
An “oops” with a firearm is never good and can seriously injure or kill someone. Get training and keep training, your life may depend on it!

next couple of weeks, azalea blooms
began to sprout. And then more
popped up. Then more! Now, the

blooms then ever, with no hint that
it had ever stopped producing fruit.
And so it is in our walk with Christ.
The process isn’t usually easy: first
identifying the weeds, recognizing
how they are hindering our spiritual
maturity, making the decision it
needs to be stripped away in order
for us to “bear fruit,” and allowing
Him to purify us no matter what the
cost. The work is hard; it requires us
to die unto ourselves and surrender
completely to Him. But the results
are always, ALWAYS an unmeasurable blessing.
“Blessed is the man who walks not in
the counsel of the wicked, nor stands
in the way of sinners, nor sits in the
seat of scoffers; but his delight is in
the law of the Lord, and on his law
he meditates day and night. He is
like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither. In all
that he does, he prospers. The wicked
are not so, but are like chaff that the
wind drives away.”
