We would like to feature some of our long time NSTRA members
in the magazine. We would like for you to submit nominations for
this. Like the longest running member in your region? The member who was key in starting or maintaining the region throughout
the years. The member who is always helping out with the trials.
Tell us what makes that person special.
Minimum Requirements for
NSTRA Hall of Fame Nominations
1. A dog must be a 10 time champion and have won a regional
elimination trial.
2. A dog must be at least a 5 time champion and placed in the
final four during a NSTRA championship trial.
Important!
All entries to Championship trials will only be taken by
telephone, email, fax and regular mail.
Important!
Only those persons qualified as a field marshal are to marshal
trials. Also, all trials should have a qualified marshal at the field
the entire length of the trial. Many trial reports are coming to the
office with people listed as field marshals who in fact are only
members.
DISCIPLINARY POLICY
“Effective September 1, 2007 all decisions of the NSTRA Board
of Directors which result in any form of disciplinary action affecting any NSTRA member are required to be contained in the
magazine next published after the disciplinary decision is rendered
by the NSTRA Board of Directors. The information so published
will be the name, membership number and region of the NSTRA
member affected, along with the disciplinary action so levied by
the NSTRA Board of Directors, and the time period governed by
the NSTRA Board of Directors decision.”
Amateur Trials
The Amateur Trials are now listed on our website. If anyone
had a placement which was listed as pending, please send the information to the office with the registration #, name, sire/dam,
and whelp date to the office. Also, incude the date of the trial and
owner/handler.
Procedure for Change of Ownership
The NSTRA national office needs a copy of the new registration
with the new owner's name, OR a copy of the front and back of
the current registration, showing previous owner, and the signature on the back confirming transfer of ownership, submitted with
a $5.00 change of ownership fee. This applies only to dogs that
have placed and are already in the database.
The date of change will be the date the above completed information is received in the NSTRA office.
Hall of Fame Nomination
In an effort to recognize and honor those deceased dogs which
have contributed significantly to the ideals and goals as established under the original constitution and by-laws of nstra, we
have devised the following plan. We feel this plan will take the
politics out of our hall of fame endeavor and the most worthy
dogs will be inducted each year.
Each dog will be rated according to his win history. Categories
will include National Championship Wins, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Runner-up National Championship placements, Number of nstra
championships, Top Performance award, and Regional Wins.
The period for submitting a nomination will open on November
1 of each calendar year and close on April 1 of the following year.
The nominations will then be given to the Hall of Fame committee and the win history on each nomination will be thoroughly
checked and scored according to the following system with the 2
inductees being announced at the Dog of the Year trial in October.
The Hall of Fame committee will score the nominated dogs
in the following manner; one point will be given for each win
under each of the above categories in paragraph 2. For example, if a dog has won the dog of the year trial twice, he
will be given 2 points under national championship wins.
If he was also a regional winner one time he will be given
one point under regional wins. Understand, the preceding two
categories, plus top performance award must be first place wins.
Under 1st, 2nd, and 3rd runner-up National Championship placements one point will given for 1st 2nd or 3rd placements. If a dog
is a 12 time nstra champion, he will be given 12 points under
number of nstra championships. When all the dogs have been
scored in this manner on the worksheet, we will come back to
each category giving the highest scoring dog under each category
one point, the 2nd highest scoring dog 2 points and so on. In
this manner, the dog with the lowest amount of points will be the
first inducted dog with the 2nd lowest scoring dog being the 2nd
inducted dog.
When appropriate, due to unusual circumstances, an additional dog may be inducted into the Hall of Fame by becoming the
“board of directors pick.” This may be a dog who has not won
under many of the above categories, but may have made significant contributions to nstra by other means, i.e. having sired an
unusual amount of nstra Champions, winning numerous Regional Championships only to mention a few areas that the board
of directors might deem Hall of Fame material.
In case of a 2-way tie for first, both dogs will automatically be
inducted. If there should happen to be a tie for 2nd, the dog with
the most 4th place wins will be the inductee.
Nominations of dogs to the nstra Hall of Fame are not “carried over” to following years should the dog not be elected in the
year nominated.  Plainly stated, a dog that does not get elected to
the Hall of Fame in the year nominated must be re-submitted each
year in order to be considered for election.

I was sitting under the tent getting ready to watch the next brace
go out. The two individuals braced together were two people I
think the world of, Jim Kell and Al Forbes. While I was sitting
there waiting, the thought occurred to me that the two men who
had just left the line had 158 years between them. Mr. Kell and
Mr. Forbes are still very competitive, and always play by the
rules. It was a very pleasant and surreal feeling for me to watch
that I asked for this picture to be taken at the end of the brace.

SYDNEY BRYANT MEMORIAL TRIAL - THREE RIVERS BIRD DOG CLUB
On Saturday February 18th and 19th, 2012, Three
Rivers Bird Dog Club held the Sidney Bryant Memorial
Trial. Sidney Bryant was a member of the Ohio Region,
who was tragically killed on Sunday April 5th, 2009.
Sidney was a member and friend to many people and an
amazing trainer to many a bird dog. Sydney was the man
to go to if you had a training problem or just a question
on what to do, to train your dog. He could also stand
around for hours and talk about the pedigree of many a
dog. Members of the Three Rivers Bird Dog Club have
chosen to keep Sidney’s name alive by having a memorial trial. Hopefully, this is a tradition that will last for
many a year to come.

on January 7th and 8th; and a trial February 11th and 12th.

january and february trials
If you are looking for a fun and exciting place to stretch your legs
and paws, look no further. The Utah NSTRA region has tons to offer.
Only minutes from world class skiing, National parks and breathtaking
views, Utah will give you an experience that you will never forget. We
encourage all to visit this wonderful arena to enjoy as we do.
On Feb. 18th and 19th Utah NSTRA held a trial in Roosevelt Utah.
The snow covered Uintah Mountains were the perfect backdrop for
what was to become a perfect weekend. February trials in Eastern Utah
can be a challenge for both trial chairman as well as members. In the
past years cold weather and deep snow have discouraged bird dogs to
escape their warm kennels, last year proved this by frigid temperatures
and 18” of snow. It sometimes takes a little encouragement to motivate
handlers to traverse the icy mountain terrain to come out and play. This
year was no problem. An abnormal warm winter and low snow levels
allowed members to arrive from all over the state with no problems and
full of excitement.
Saturday morning greeted us with a wonderful clear day. The dog
gods parted the clouds allowed the sun to shine, it was time to “let em’
go”. Braces went without a hitch. Dogs were finding birds like no
other and the bon fire stories were getting bigger and bigger. We had an
awesome lunch and before long the last brace was over.
Then came Sunday. We awoke to three inches of snow and the
flakes were falling hard. The Arizona boys that came to trial with us
were cold, not used to the wet conditions I am guessing, but the trial
continued. By lunch the snow had stopped and had started to melt.
Our judges had no longer begun to dry off and the weekend was over.
Another great time in Utah. Awesome dog work and great company
made this trial a hit.
Thanks to all who pitched in to make things run so smoothly. Trial
chairmen were Lance Neilson and Randall Bennett. Maurine Goodrich
always does a great job as trial marshal. Also a special thanks to Ron
Horn for supplying us with the birds and buddies to make this trial a go.
Judges were: Ron Horn, Kip Bottomly, Brad Jenkins, Tom Kosmack,
Chad Jones, and Randall Bennett.
We will be hosting “THE BEST OF THE WEST” a triple/triple on
April 27, 28, 29th In Lehi, Utah. This is an awesome three day weekend that in the past has challenged the best of dogs. For more information contact Matt Tanner at 520-343-1284.

Floyd Williams
Floyd Williams is one of the longest
members of the Ohio region and Three
Rivers Bird Dog Club. Floyd is from
Huber Heights Ohio and has been a
member for over 30 years. He has
held many positions in the club from
bird planter, to judge, field marshal,
trial chairman and treasurer. He was
treasurer for the Ohio region and
Three Rivers close to 15 years.
Floyd retired from Chrysler
Corporation, in Dayton Ohio. On
many a day Floyd would work his
day job and then come to the trial
grounds to compete or to pick up his
paperwork for the treasurer position.
Floyd has trained many dogs
in those 30 years. Not only has he
trained his dogs but many of the other
members dogs as well. Floyd is one of
the members people go to when they
have a training problem or questions.
If you have a dog not training as it
should, there is a very good chance
Floyd will know what to do.
If you get a chance to enter a trial in
the Ohio region and especially Three
Rivers Bird Dog Club, chances are
you will meet Floyd. He will be the
one in the clubhouse telling stories and
welcoming everyone who comes in. n

Lulu was born in June of 1999 to a daughter of
Crow’s Little Joe and Wind Jammer’s Sally. Lulu was
the runt of the litter. Professional trainer Chuck Tash
of Florence Alabama whelped the litter, trained Lulu,
and sold her to me as a three year old.
As far back as I can remember, I have always loved hunting dogs. I was in my
late twenties when I started thinking about buying my first hunting dog. My dad
advised me to go out to a local field trial and start the hunt for a broke dog. I made
my way out to a Gulf Coast Region NSTRA trial in Katy, Texas, and it was a day
that would change and enrich my life forever. I was greeted warmly as a dogless
observer by many friendly members, but two members are forever etched in my
mind as they are, two of the finest men I have ever met. They are Gene Olsen and
Bill Spaar. They were wily old vets who immediately took me under their wings
and have been wonderful friends and mentors ever since in and out of the field.
Through Gene’s advice, I started the process of finding a dog out of the famous
Crow‘s Little Joe. I tracked down Anthony and Suzy Crow, and they directed
me to Chuck Tash, saying he was a very good trainer. Chuck is another NSTRA
member who has enriched my life with his friendship. I was about to get very
lucky, as my timing was perfect. Lulu was Chuck’s dog, and he was handling
dogs successfully for Roy Burchel. It did not make sense for Chuck to continue to
run his own dogs. Lulu was a NSTRA champion, and Chuck had just placed her
second at the Dixie Regional Championship. I bought Lulu from Chuck, but as
part of the deal I promised to let Chuck run her at a national trial.
When we brought Lulu home to Texas from Chuck’s in Alabama, she had never
ridden in a car, and had never been in a house. It didn’t take her long to get used
to the good life as a house dog, but she didn’t lose her winning ways. The first
time I trialed her, she went 4-4 and placed second. I was hooked. Lulu was a
good bird finder, slammed her birds (once receiving a 98) and she was a great
retriever. She deserved a far better handler than me. Chuck proved this when,
as part of my purchase agreement, he ran her one last time at the 2003 Quail
Invitational. Chuck had a great bond with Lulu and handled her masterfully,
beating out 127 other dogs to win the three day trial—what a thrill to watch.

Over the next few years I had a blast trialing and wild bird hunting Lulu all over
Texas, putting a couple more championships. She also won the Tri-Regional
Challenge where three regions’ best 10 dogs get together and battle it out. Lulu
had a fun and quirky personality both in the field and at home. She is greatly
missed around our house, as my four-year-old son often reminds me. Lulu’s
impact on my life caused me to be so thankful for many great people and things in
my life. First, my Dad, Eddie, for exposing me to hunting dogs and the outdoors.
Chuck Tash, for his integrity and skill in training many great dogs (you will never
meet a more honest guy in the dog business). My NSTRA friends who, in a sense,
Lulu introduced me to: Bill Spaar, Scott Thomas, Orin Ozias, Gene Olson, and too
many others to count. They have enriched my life greatly. It has been a great
experience and that is what life is all about. Lulu passed in September of cancer
at the age of twelve. Thanks Lulu, you will never be forgotten. We all miss you.

Dear fellow member:
During the past few weeks the National Officers have been engaged in discussions about how to provide the membership at large with opportunities to participate in national trials as officials in the capacity
of judges, field marshals and bird planters.
This discussion is always tempered by our desire to maintain the highest quality standards possible as we seek to expand the pool of eligible individuals who can offer their expertise to the organization. To this end, we have established minimum criteria that will allow individual members to submit
their names for the consideration of the National Officers to serve as trial officials.
Criteria for judges
____ Must have a judges’ license for a minimum of four years and have judged at least 25 trials. Should
also have judged trials outside their own region and preferably judged at the regional level;
____ Show evidence that the individual stays current with the rules by having participated in local judging seminars within the last year;
____ Should be available to serve as a judge when called;
____ Must show evidence of involvement in their local region by participating in trials
handling dogs and judging;
___Must be endorsed by the local regional board.
Criteria for Field Marshals
___Must have experience by having served in a minimum of 20 local trials as a field marshal and have
the required field marshal certification as stated in the Rules;
____ Regional board of directors must certify that the individual has attended local seminars and is
knowledgeable in the rules.
Criteria for Bird Planters
___Experience planting birds in local and regional trials as certified by the Regional board of directors;
___ Support their local region in other activities besides bird planting, for example: judging trials,
handling dogs or chairing trials.
It is the intention of the National Officers to select trial officials from within a geographic location
of the country within reasonable proximity to the trial site, and as such provide more opportunities for
members to participate as national officials, while at the same time attempting reduce the costs that may
be incurred by bringing in trial officials who live far away from the national trial sites.
If you are interested in being selected to serve as a national trial official, we ask that you submit to our
office a letter indicating your interest and delineating you experience and qualifications. This information should be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from your regional board supporting your
application. We strongly believe that NSTRA belongs to all its members, and offering this opportunity to
serve in this capacity is an excellent way to have more members become true stakeholders in our organization. As always, we remain committed to serving you, and ask that you contact the national officer
assigned to your region if you should have any questions about this letter or any other issue of interest
to you.

Buddy’s Mini-Cooper
“Cooper” is a 5 year old, white and orange male Brittany a/k/a
“Fluffy"; “that Toilet Seat Cover"; or “the Pointer in a Brittany’s
body”; all affectionately named by fellow region member and
friend, Tim Faas. Coop came to Bruce and I from Jim Doughty
out of the MoKan Region and he was sired by Nolan’s Last
Bullet and TJ’s Microbean’s Ginger Snap both of whom are no
longer with us. I remember talking to Jim about the pups and
looking at pictures and listening and trusting Jim about which
one he thought would be a NSTRA dog. Every time I saw pictures of the pups Coop was always the one back by the quail pen
watching the birds.
Coop has a history and a real extended family. Coop started
out with Bruce and I and Bruce loved the little guy to pieces.
He even got to shoot some birds over him before he passed on
thanks to Butch Butler and Jim Bishop. The one thing I remember Bruce telling me is “keep him going because I think this is
the one we’ve been looking for”. Coop spent several months
with Butch Butler for his training period and then Butch ran
him putting several of his points towards his first championship
on him after Bruce passed on. One interesting event at Butch’s
place was when one of his fishing buddies was at his place and
said “Butch, you’re not going to believe this but Coop’s in a
tree” … and yup, he was. Coop had jumped from the ground to
the Y in the tree and was walking out on the limb to get a squirrel.
About two years or so ago Sam Ashmore then took on the little
“P-head” and after some harassing from the pointer guys about
running a “Brittany”, some fine tuning and bonding time, he and
Sam became one. Interesting enough the first time Sam met
Coop was when Bruce was showing him off as a pup to Sam and
Clayton. Sam turned around and Coop nipped him on the butt;
little did he know at that time he’d end up handling him. Sam,
Nancy, Clayton and Brandi have made him, and me, part of their
family and even little “Rosie” their Jack Russell has accepted
him. Coop comes home and stay with me, or stays at Sam’s and
he adjusts just like he hasn’t been gone from either place; he just
takes over where ever he is. At home he listens to me, but the
minute Sam shows up at my place or I turn in the club entrance,
I don’t exist and he’s all Sam’s. It’s no wonder why, at Sam’s
place Coop can be found right by Sam’s side or sharing the
recliner and wing house wings!
You know no one will every convince me that there isn’t a
greater power out there… during the final hour Sam and Coop
were tied up with Gary and Gator with 4-4 apiece, except Coop
had a back; but during the last 15 seconds of the hour brace
Coop hit point, Sam flushed, shot and Coop retrieved the bird
and then I heard a loud war whoop from the field and here comes
Sam carrying Coop out of the field hugging him. However, the
moving part of the event for me was that Coop hit the point and
finished up on “A” field where Bruce’s ashes are spread. I know
Bruce was sharing the ride with Sam and Coop; and I know he
was watching and cheering them on!!! Bruce was saying the
same thing I was, “Great job Sam and here’s to many more birds
being shot over the little “P-Head”. n

SPOTLIGHT MEMBER
July 31, 1935, a baby
boy is born to Edwin and
Stella Moore at their home
in Pampa, Texas. Buddy
Moore began his life on this
day and where Buddy spent
his childhood. He attended
Pampa high school, and was
very active in sports and
also met the love of his life,
Marjorie. Buddy followed
his football coach from
Pampa, Texas to Texas AM
Buddy and Marjorie
University and played football
for two years. After marrying Marjorie in 1955, they moved
to Mississippi and worked there for a few years. In 1967 they
moved to Lubbock, Texas and Buddy went to work for the
Methodist Hospital and continued there for the next 30 years.
Buddy and Marjorie have three children, two boys and a girl.
They also have five grandchildren, three girls and one set of
twin boys.
Buddy began training bird dogs and became very interested
in wild game bird hunting with his colleagues. After a
couple of seasons of wild bird hunting he and his colleagues
determined that the seasons were much too short and they
wanted to spend more time wild bird hunting with their dogs.
This is when Buddy became interested in field trailing. One
of Buddy’s colleagues became the new president of the South
Plains pointer club, and soon Buddy became a member as
well. After looking into different field trial organizations
he became a member of the National Shoot to Retrieve
Association in March 1987. Buddy had several dogs at this
time all of which were capable of running field trials. Buddy
started his NSTRA career by competing in field trails all over
Texas, Oklahoma and any place else he could find a field trial.
He is ready, willing and able to run as many as five dogs per
trial, if needed.
Buddy had seven dogs in his career that were multitime champions and two dogs were one time champions.

Buddy Moore
Stoney (Matador’s Chief) was a one time champion with
34 points collected. Dixie (Queen’s Dixie Roll) was a fourtime champion and the mother to Buster and Smokey with
a total of 78 career points. Buster (Ozark’s Rebels Buster)
was a six time champion finishing second in the Purina High
Pro Endurance Classic in September 1991, a West Texas
region runner up for High Point Dog of the Year, and also
collected a career number of 112 points. Smokey (Rex Roll’s
Smokey) was a three time champion and won Purina High
Pro Endurance classic in September of 1991 with 64 entries.
Jane (Palmer’s Lady Jane) was a two time champion with
51 points. Chase (Buddin’s Pride Chase) became a two-time
champion. Peter (Nail’s Pepper Tokoa) became a three time
champion.Woody (Nails’s Smoking Wheel) was a three
time champion and finished third in the West Texas region
elimination trial in 2006. Bubba (Grappy’s Rambling Repeat)
was a one time champion. Buddy had five champions and ran
all five in the trial Champions of Champions in Amo, Indiana.
For the past five years Buddy has been current president
of the South Plains Pointer Club. He has hosted and chaired
many trials in his career. In early 2000 he became a National
Shoot to Retrieve judge where he judged many trials all over
the country. Many of the areas trials he attended were in West
Texas Region, Mokan Region and Lone Star Region. When
Buddy began judging full time, Wayne Denyou took over the
job of handling his dogs. Wayne handled Buddy’s dogs for
several years until he moved back east.
Buddy also served on the West Texas Region Board of
Directors for several years. He supports both the National
Shoot to Retrieve organization and the NSTRA scholarship
fund with monetary donations and supplies many of the
auction items.
He has been a mentor to many new members, young dog
handlers and always available to answer questions. His advice
over the years is very appreciatedand he is truly a good
friend.

NSTRA REGISTRY:
Dog, Litter and Kennel registrations
are $20 each. ($20 per individual dog
registered, $20 per litter registration and
$20 annual fee for kennel registrations)
TOP PERFORMANCE REPORTING:
This award is presented to the dog
accumulating the most points from June
1 through May 31. During this time
frame all points will count except those
points earned during qualifying and final
rounds of National Championship and
Regional Championship Trials.
HALL OF FAME NOMINATIONS:
Hall of Fame nominations will be
accepted November 1 through March
31 of each year. Send these to the office.
Nominations of dogs to the NSTRA
Hall of Fame are NOT “carried over” to
following years should the dog not be
elected in the year nominated. Plainly
stated, a dog that does not get elected to
the Hall of Fame in the year nominated
must be re-submitted each year in
order to be considered for election.
QUAIL INVITATIONAL:
This trial is always held the last week in
February that includes a Saturday.
The qualification period for this
trial is Nov. 1 through Oct. 31. This
includes all points earned during the
time frame, except points earned from
placements in the final “Top 4” of a
National Championship trial or Regional
Championship trial (qualifying rounds
do count). Entry into the trial is based
on points (dog with most points first to
get in and on down the list, etc.). NO
INVITATIONS WILL BE SENT. Any
dog with a placement during specified
time frame will be eligible to enter.
Amateur points do not qualify entry into
Championship trials.
TRIAL SCHEDULES:
Fall trial schedules are due in the office
by May 1. Spring trial schedules are due
in the office by Nov. 1. All trials must be
published on the website 4 weeks prior to
their running.
TRIAL REPORTS:
Trial reports are due in the NSTRA office
10 days after the trial date.
CHANGE OF HOME REGION:
Members requesting a change of Home
Region must do so, in writing, through
the National Office between the dates of
October 1st and January 1st. *Exception:
A member who permanently relocates
to within the boundaries of a Region,
other than their Home Region, may make
written application to the NSTRA office
at anytime to request a change in their
Home Region.
GRAND NATIONAL:
Entry into this trial is based on
participation in one of the other five
championship trials, participating in your
regional elimination from the previous
year, and the previous year’s Top
Performance winner.
TRIAL OF CHAMPIONS:
The criteria for entry into this trial is
that the dog has earned a championship
and is at least a 1x champion by Feb. 1
of the current year OR the dog can be a
paid standby for this trial by achieving
their championship between Feb. 2
and March 31. All entries for this trial
must be postmarked by March 12. (NO
INVITATIONS WILL BE SENT.)
RULE CHANGES:
Proposed new rule changes or additions
shall be submitted sixty (60) days prior
to the first day of the Trial of Champions
and/or the Dog of the Year trial.
CONSTITUTION/BY-LAW
CHANGES:
All proposed amendments to the
Constitution and By-laws shall be
submitted to the National Officers at
least ninety (90) days prior to the first day
of the Trial of Champions or the Dog of
the Year trial.
ENDURANCE CLASSIC:
Entry into this trial is based on all points
earned within a dog’s home region from
June 1 through May 31, except points
earned from placements in the final “Top
4” of a National Championship trial or
Regional Championship trial (qualifying
rounds do count). Each region is allotted
a quota based on the number of trials that
the region held in the same time frame.
NO INVITATIONS WILL BE SENT.

REGION HIGH POINT:
Points earned in the qualifying rounds
of a Regional Elimination or a Championship trial DO count towards the
region’s high point competition. Points
earned in the finals of above trials

any dog having been sold with new owners information plus $5 to the National
Office. This must be received in the office

A. NATURE OF AWARD: National Shoot to Retrieve is offering an one time scholarship
to any son or daughter of a NSTRA member in good standing who is enrolled in their junior
or senior year of high school or their freshman or sophomore year of college that meets the
selection criteria. Said monetary award shall be 80% of the amount raised at the prior year's
fundraising event.
B. CRITERIA FOR SELECTION: 1- Any high school junior or senior or any first or 2nd year college student who is the son/
daughter of an eligible NSTRA member can apply for this scholarship. For purposes of this
award, “eligible NSTRA member/parent” means any member in good standing for at least 5
consecutive years prior to the submission of this application and who has actively participated
in at least 6 trials in each of those years;
2- Applicant must submit evidence of strong academic performance to date, supported by the
submission of official documentation indicating class rank, grade point average and ACT or
SAT test scores. Official documentation means this information MUST be provided in letterhead
from their school and/or national testing office. In the event that this documentation is not
available a clear and concise explanation as to the reason must be provided;
3- Applicant must be enrolled or accepted in an accredited academic college and supply
appropriate documentation. A letter of admission or grade slip from the college if already
enrolled, constitutes adequate documentation;
4- Applicant must provide 3 letters of recommendation from academic advisors or teachers.
These letters must specifically address the applicant’s academic achievements and abilities;
5- Applicant must submit evidence of extra curricular activity supporting scholastic
achievement, any other school involvement or community activities. Any letters of
recommendation from NSTRA members would be in addition to the letters from teachers or
academic advisors;
6- Applicant must submit a 3-5 page essay detailing what NSTRA means to him/her, to their
family and how the “eligible parent’s” participation in NSTRA has impacted on his/her life.
Applicant must also explain how a college education would affect his/her future and what his/
her educational goals are;
7- Essay must not include name of the applicant. A separate cover letter and application
form with all pertinent information should accompany the application Each application will be
assigned an identification number and each will be read by the scholarship committee without
a name attached to it;
8- It is expected that the recipient will provide NSTRA for 3 years with follow up to his/her
academic achievements after receipt of the award.
C. STIPULATIONS: The recipient will receive a letter of Certification of Award from NSTRA. This letter should be presented, by the recipient, to the university who then may contact
NSTRA to secure the monetary award.
D. PRESENTATION OF AWARD: The scholarship winner will be announced during the
annual Dog of the Year banquet. The current NSTRA President will make said announcement. If recipient is not present, award will be forwarded.

2012 NSTRA QUAIL INVITATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
The 23rd running of the NSTRA QI Championship was held February 23 through February 25 at the Central Florida Field Trialers grounds at Lake
Wales, Florida. As we utilize four fields, there are few places to accommodate a trial of this size and the Florida Field Trialers step up to the plate
each year for this fun filled event. Many “snow birds” come from the Northern States to enjoy the beautiful weather and do a little sightseeing during
their stay. What could be better than running a championship trial, visiting Mickey Mouse and swimming in the ocean in less than a 100 mile radius?
Although the weather “up north” had not been unusually cold, it’s still nice to come to Florida and trial in t-shirts and shorts.
Judging the event were Ron Huels, Ron Becker, and Frank Llano – Illinois Region; Donny Parker – Arkansas; Stan Perdue – Georgia; and Butch
Butler, James Carver and Billy Trawick – Florida. Bird handlers were Bo Marcum – Mo-Kan and Lonnie Jones – Missouri-Show-Me. Field marshals
were Nancy Ashmore and Dana Walker – Florida; Cookie Anderson – Northern Illinois and Stacy Holder – Wisconsin. With officials of this caliber,
there is little worry for the Trial Chairman; until you’ve chaired a championship event, no one knows how important these people are. They are the
backbone of an event of this size and we appreciate the efforts of each one of these dedicated individuals. These people work hard to make sure
they are being fair and and as accurate as humanly possible during these championship trials and we cannot thank them enough for the time they
take to preside during these three days.
A pre-trial was held on Saturday, Sunday and Monday of the previous weekend chaired by the Officers and Board of Directors of the Florida Region.
Four fields were utilized for this event giving everyone a chance to run on their respective field for their championship run. Breakfast, lunch and dinner was served throughout the weekend with BBQ ribs and chicken served on Saturday evening and a complimentary spaghetti dinner served by the
CFFT Club on Sunday evening. As there are too many people to name individually, we thank the club as a whole for the fine meals served during the
pre-trial and throughout the week.
On Wednesday evening, the CFFT Club held an evening cocktail party; heavy on the hors d’oeuvres and canapés. The tables were beautifully
decorated and everyone spent an enjoyable evening visiting with old and new friends.
As the championship trial rolled around, the cooks were STILL in the kitchen serving meals to handlers and families from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
On Thursday morning prior to the breakaway, a short meeting was held with trial officials and chairmen to explain boundaries, safety zones and
participate in a short prayer service for the weekend event. Suvoyee Rudd also began the trial with a short prayer prior to the Flag Raising ceremony
conducted by Gary May with the playing of our National Anthem. At 7:30 a.m. the first brace in each field was called to the starting line and the running of each field follows:
Judges Ron Huels and Ron Becker with field marshal Nancy Ashmore would officiate in A Field. Lonnie Jones would handle birds for A and B Field.

Trophies were awarded immediately after the trial and pictures taken of the dogs and handlers. Dean Reinke and Ray Cacchio were on hand as
our Purina Representatives and helped present the trophies.
Evening festivities began with a scrumptious pork loin dinner with baked potatoes, salad and desserts; again a meal served “fit for a king”. Paige
Lee was the winner of the CFFT shotgun raffle and the club would like to thank everyone for their participation. Marilyn Cunningham announced
that the Central Florida Field Trial Club would again be the host for the 2013 and 2014 QI Invitational. Club members and trial participants gave a
round of applause for the good news that we would once again be in Florida for this Championship Event.
Show-time Friday morning dawned with another beautiful Florida day. The top 8 dogs from each field would advance to the afternoon braces. Trial
officials would keep their respective fields. The Top 4 dogs from each field on Friday afternoon would advance to Saturday morning. The running
and scores are listed below with the top 8 dogs marked by an asterisk.

As the morning braces wound down, everyone made their way to the
clubhouse for lunch. The die had been cast with Sam and Cooper
running against Gary and Gater for the coveted title of Quail Invitational
National Champion. The winner would join a long list of finalists from
1989 to the present day. The final brace would begin at 2:30 and both
men and dogs were taking a well deserved rest before the one hour
brace.
As the gallery made their way back to the viewing stand, the marshals,
Nancy and Dana gave the handlers their final instructions detailing the
boundaries and safety areas while Lonnie placed the birds throughout
both A and B Fields. Ron Becker and Ron Huels were ready for their
judging duries and at 2:30 judges, handlers and dogs came to the
starting line. Both chose A field to start the brace and we were under
way. It was an exciting hour and we did not know the outcome of the
brace until the handlers once more made their way off the field. It was
at that point we learned that Sam with Cooper had scored on 5 finds,
5 retrieves and a back while Gary and Gater had put 4 finds and 4
retrieves on the card. Cooper’s score was 1056 points while Gater’s
was 801 points.
It was a great finish for two super handlers and 2 phenomenal dogs.
Cooper’s co-owner, Sharron Watson, and Sam’s family were waiting
to welcome Sam and Cooper to the front with open arms. The awards
ceremony awaited the Top Four at the clubhouse and after a short rest,
the crowd headed that way.
Trial Chairman, Marilyn Cunningham, CFFT President David Demeza
and Purina Representatives, Dean Reinke and Ray Cacchio would
make the trophy presentations to the final four winners.
The seventh runner-up was Gamble’s Little Joe owned by Sharon
Gamble and handled by Jeff Gamble from the Dixie Region. Joe is
from Nolan’s Last Bullet and Babe’s Cindy Rae. He is an 8x NSTRA
Champion and 1x Regional Champion with 145 lifetime points. Congratulations to Joe and the Gamble family.
Sixth runner-up was Kickapoo Molly’s Revenge, owned and handled by
Roger Parient from the Indiana Region. Molly is a 12x NSTRA Champion, 1x Regional Champion and had won the 2009 and 2010 Quail
Invitational Championship. She has 221 lifetime points. Congratulations to Roger and Molly.
Fifth runner-up was Gamble’s Hoss, owned by Rachel Crossland and
handled by Travis Crossland. Hoss is a 3x NSTRA Champion and
litter mate to Gamble’s Little Joe. He has 69 lifetime points and is a 1x
Regional Champion. Congratulations to the Crossland family and Hoss.
Kickapoo’s X Factor “Rock”, owned by Roger Parient and handled
by Harold Smith, was the fourth runner-up. Rock is from Boomer’s X
Rated “Johnny” and B’s Midnight Roven. He has 4 lifetime points and
our congratulations go out to Roger, Harold and Rock.
The third runner-up was Smoke Creek Dude, 4 year old German Wirehair Pointer Male, owned by George Sterner from the Florida Region.
Dude is from St. Croix’s Easy Money and Smoke Creek’s Luschi. Dude
placed 4th on 2/13/11 C Field and D Field at the Wagon View Trial. On
10/2/11 he also placed 2nd at the Great West LLC Trial. On 1/14/12
Dude earned another 2nd place at the CFFT trial. Although fairly new
to the association, Dude and George are off to a rip-roaring start.
George also have two sons, Geoff and George IV, who are trialing and
members of the CFFT club. It is a family affair with wives, Tina and Lisa
also on hand. George received 112 pounds of Purina Pro Plan and
the Purina Winner’s Jacket presented by Dean and also received a gift
certificate from Tri-Tronics, Foster and Smith, Dogs Unlimited and Red
Haw Supply. The 4 finalist also received the Winner’s Belt Buckle, presented by David Demeza donated by the Central Florida Field Trialers
in memory of Pap Heddon; Sharron Watson made the presentation of a
beautiful NSTRA license plate donated in memory of her late husband,
Bruce Watson and Jim Mahoney presented each of the Top Four with a
t-shirt donated by JB’s Restaurant, Lake Wales. Frank Llano, NSTRA
Treasurer made the NSTRA trophy presentation along with the NSTRA
wall plaque made by Richie Hight, Reno, NV. Each received EMT Gel,
Prozyme and Trophy Dyne from Trophy Animal Health Care. Congratulations to Dude, George and the entire Sterner Family and welcome to
the NSTRA Family.
Second runner-up was Tomoka’s Smokin Gun “Jake”, 4 year old English
Setter Male, owned by Greg Wood, Kentucky Region and Jim Kirman,
Virginia Region. Jake is from Tomoka’s Smokin J.R. and Barr’s Smokin
Mackenzie. He is a 6x NSTRA Champion and 1x Regional Champion
with 37 first place points, 24 other points totaling 61 lifetime points.
His first placement came on 12/7/08 when he was barely 14 months
old and won the Kentucky Regional in 2009. In 2010 Jake was also
2nd runner-up during the Kentucky Regional Championship. In 2010
he won a qualification run during the DOY Championship and again in
2011. Greg was presented with 112 pounds of Purina Pro Plan and the
Purina Winner’s Jacket presented by Dean and a gift certificate from
Tri-Tronics, Foster and Smith, Dogs Unlimited and Red Haw Supply. He

his friend Cheryl and her family and of course the Wood girls, Morgan,
Meagan and Madison with us for the trial. Morgan and Meagan no
longer cry when they leave us, but Madison shed a few tears. These
girls have grown up in NSTRA and it’s always such a great time when
they are around. Congratulations to the Wood’s family, Jim Kirkman
and Jake for a great week.
Our first runner-up, Snake Island Navigater is a 4 ½ year old English
Setter Male, from Goose Creek’s Breeze and Tash’s Alice. He is owned
by Gary Drinnen, Dixie Region. “Gater” has acquired 33 lifetime points
of which 23 are first place points. He is a 1x NSTRA Champion and
earned that championship on 5/14/2011. His first placement came on
10/11/09 and he placed 4th during a qualification round of the 2010
Grand National Championship. In February, 2011, Gater placed 2nd
runner-up at the Quail Invitational Championship Finals in Lake Wales,
Florida. He received a 3rd place win during a qualification run at the
2012 QI Championship. Gary’s Uncle, Jerry Harrell, was on hand to
help Gary and Gater celebrate this special win. Gary received 225 #
of Purina Pro Plan and winner’s jacket presented by Dean; also gift
certificates from Tri-Tronics, Foster and Smith, Dogs Unlimited and Red
Haw Supply. He also received the Winner’s Belt Buckle, presented by
David Demeza, NSTRA license plate from Sharron, t-shirt from J.B.’s,
the NSTRA trophy and wall plaque, and EMT Gel, Prozyme and Trophy
Dyne from Trophy Animal Health Care. A special award is given to the
first runner-up during each championship event which is a pair of Bird
Shooter Boots from W.C.Russell Moccasin Company. Although Gary is
a pretty quiet type guy, he was all smiles during this presentation and
our hats are off to Gary and Gater for a phenomenal week.
THE WINNER: The newest National Champion to join the ranks of this
elite group of dogs is Buddy’s Mini-Cooper, Brittany Male, owned by
Sharron Watson and Sam Ashmore, handled by Sam. Cooper is 5 ½
years old from Nolan’s Last Bullet and TJ’s Microbeans Ginger Snap.
He has acquired 65 lifetime points of which 46 are first place points.
His first placement came on 2/17/08 at the CFFT trial and he became a
1 time NSTRA Champion on 2/19/11. On 4/10/10 Cooper placed 3rd
during a qualification round of the Florida Regional; in April 2011, he won
2nd during a qualification round and the following day won the Florida
Regional Championship. On 4/27/11 he also took a 2nd place during
a qualification round at the Trial of Champions. Sam received 450 # of
Purina Pro Plan and the winner’s jacket presented by Dean. Ray Cacchio presented Sam with the Pro 500 collar from Tri-Tronics and he also
received a $100 gift certificate from Foster & Smith, $50 gift certificate
from Dogs Unlimited and a $50 gift certificate from Dion Bliss with Red
Haw Supply. He also received the Winner’s Belt Buckle, presented by
David Demeza, NSTRA license plate from Sharron, t-shirt from J.B.’s,
the NSTRA trophy and wall plaque, and EMT Gel, Prozyme and Trophy
Dyne from Trophy Animal Health Care. Sam’s family, Nancy, Brandy,
and Clayton along with their adopted member, Sharron, are all a special
part of the Florida Region, the CFFT Field Trialers and NSTRA and are
very deserving of this special honor. Congratulations to the Ashmore’s
and Sharron for a fantastic week.

HIGHLIGHTS: The Top 16 finishers from Friday afternoon were all
presented with a bag of Purina Pro Plan and dog bowl from Purina
and EMT Gel, Prozyme and Trophy Dyne from Trophy Animal Health
Care. It’s a great accomplishment to finish in the Top 16 of a trial of
this magnitude. Each of these 16 handlers should be very proud of this
accomplishment.
All handlers received a Purina tote bag, dog food bowl and bags of
Purina Pro Plan from Purina along with a trial hat, hat pin and flash light
from NSTRA. Suvoyee Rudd became NSTRA’s Unsafe Poster Child
when he was seen driving by the B Field on his 4-wheeler, with a shotgun in one hand, his dog trailing along behind the bike, a drink in the
other hand, talking on his cell phone. This is one multi-tasking guy.
Be sure to ask Donny Parker about the tamale his fellow judges fixed
for him on his way to the airport Saturday after the trial. He was heard
saying he couldn’t even talk and his head was burning up. Donny, why
do you use so much hot sauce?
It was noted that Bo Marcum doesn’t answer his cell phone for just anyone. We’re wondering why the trial chairman can always get an answer.
A special thank you to Bruce Van Vliet for his part in making sure that
everything is ready for the trial. It was said that he was going to change
his name, but we’ll let you know when that happens. Seriously, Bruce
does a terrific job making sure that all is ready. He and Ralph Harrell
can be found from 11 to 1 every day at the grill cooking hamburgers and
hot dogs for lunch.
