58th Western Regional Convention
From March 16th to the 19th, 2006, Alpha
Phi Alpha held this year's 58th Annual Western Regional Convention at the San Ramon
Marriott In San Ramone, California.
Brother Sam Bagwell had the distinct honor
of serving as a delegate and as the Zeta Sigma
Lambda Chapter representative for “Alpha
Man of the Year” at the Convention.
The convention served several purposes:
• Provide information to the brotherhood
• Assess the quality of Alpha programs
• Assist in the improvement of Alpha programs through appropriate recommendations
• Promote a more perfect union among the
Alpha brothers
Over the course of the convention, there
were a number of reports from each committee of the fraternity. The different committees
of the Western Region of Alpha Phi Alpha
Fraternity Inc. serve a critical role of implementing programs assessments. These committees provided information that is used as
a measurement tool that provides the General
President, Region Vice Presidents, Assistant
Vice Presidents, District Presidents and Chapter Presidents on the usage of programs and
services, evaluations on the effectiveness of
these programs and services, and the desires
of our brothers.
Thursday, March 16th
Bro. John Smith and Bro. Sam Bagwell set
up Bro. Bagwell's display for the Alpha Man
of the Year Competition. Later that evening,
everyone attended the Public Program where
Mayor Anderson of San Ramone was the
Western Region Award Honoree and Dr.
Hamilton T. Boswell was presented the Award
of Merit. The Mayor of San Ramon welcomed
the Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity
Inc. to the city. A total of three mayors from
local cities were in attendance. After the Public Program was the Vice President’s Reception where brothers from Western Region had
the chance to renew old friendships and talk
of Alpha. A jazz band was there for the entertainment of the brothers and their guest.
Friday, March 17th
Business Sessions I & II were conducted,
where reports were given on Life Membership, Senior Affairs, Elections Committee,
Awards Committee, Grievance & Discipline,
and the Memorial Project. Brother Lloyd
Chandler urged the brothers present to contribute to the MLK Memorial project.
The MLK Fraternal Luncheon was a success. Actor Tim Reid, star of the TV show
Sister, Sister, and whose son is an Alpha, was
the guest speaker. He gave an outstanding
presentation. One of his quotes that spread
throughout the convention was “IT'S HARD
OUT HERE TO BE A PIMP.” He expressed
how negative this quote was to the Black
community.
That evening, the Miss Black and Gold
competition took place. As always, this was
the one of the high points of the convention.
College brothers were truly motivated and in
great spirits.
Saturday, March 18th
The Life Membership Breakfast (at 7:15
am) honored the pass Brothers from the
Western Region who were National Brother
Alpha Brothers of the year.
Later that morning, the Third Business
Session took place. After that was the College
Brothers Luncheon and Oratorical Contest.
The Oratorical contest gives all the brothers
of Alpha Phi Alpha a greater appreciation for
the quality of college brothers, and allows
them the chance to observe college brothers
develop their leadership qualities, their ability to think and speak clearly and intelligently,
and prepare for acceptance of the duties and
responsibilities of a leadership position.
The Final Business Session saw the reading
of the names of the brothers who have joined
the Omega Chapter and the closing of Western Regional Business.
The final event, of course was the Black
& Gold Reception and Banquet. Once again
the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha did an outstanding job in the preparation for this event.
Keynote speaker was Bro. John Williams,
Nation Parliamentarian. He also spoke of the
negativity of the award winning song “ITS
HARD OUT HERE TO BE A PIMP."
Brothers came away from the Convention
with a feeling of camaradarie and the willingness to go out and do the business of Alpha.
On to the Centennial in D.C.in July!

Beta Chapter could have been Virginia Union...

Jewel Eugene Kinkle Jones (who attended
Virginia Union as an undergraduate before
going to Cornell) had made plans for Alpha’s
second chapter to be established at his alma
mater, Virginia Union. The story continues
that on his way to Virginia, Jones stopped off
in Washington to continue a courtship with
a young lady and while in Washington, paid
a visit to Howard and started a chapter there
before continuing on to Virginia Union to
establish what became Gamma Chapter. The
point is, that but for an affair of the heart,
Beta Chapter would be at Virginia Union and
not Howard University.

2006 Centennial Convention coming in July
On July 25 – 30, 2006 Alpha Phi Alpha
members, families and friends will converge on Washington, D.C. to celebrate the
100th Anniversary of an organization whose
members have had an enormous impact on
the lives of countless human beings. The
Centennial Convention will be preceded by
a Centennial Era – a period of preparation
and mobilization consisting of Nationwide
activities and events; the commissioning of
intellectual and scholarly works; the presentation of exhibits, lectures, artwork and musical expositions and the production of film
and video presentations. All of which will
transmit to our members, our community,
the nation and the world the story of seven
men who spawned a movement, one which
changed the course of history and advanced a
people and a world.
There will be many events, including a
Step Show competition at Howard University,
a “Night on the Town” special performance
at the Kennedy Center, a Miss
Black and Gold Contest, and
several special trips and tours
planned for Alpha wives and
youth.
This celebration is a once-in-a-lifetime
event, so be sure to get your registration in
soon. After June 1st, registration goes up
$100 dollars and does so again after July 1st.
Please Pay Your Chapter Dues
As of April 19th, 36 brothers have paid
their chapter dues. Our goal is to have 60
paid brothers. C’mon brothers, you all know
the important work we do in the community.
We need you to step up and contribute, even
if you cannot attend the General Meeting.
Thank you very much for your support.

Zeta Sigma Lambda inducts new brothers
In March 2006, Zeta Sigma Lambda
Chapter inducted two new brothers into
Alpha Phi Alpha. They are Bro. Malik
Muhammad (second from left), a Ph.D.
candidate, and Bro. Doug Williams (first
on right), Principal of Hoover High School.
They are shown here with Bro. Darrell
Porcher and Bro. Donald Long.
For their Community Service during
the Leadership Weekend, they engaged in
Academic Counseling by providing assistance
to youth at the Jackie Robinson YMCA in
Southeast San Diego. Their performance was
in the true Alpha spirit and was impressive.
It is with joy and enthusiam that we
welcome these brothers into the Halls of
Alpha. We look forward to working
closely with these new brothers as we
move through our centennial year and
watch them catch the Alpha spirit as
we carry out our National and local
programs.
Congratulations!
Eta Sigma Step Show at UCSD
On April 21st, as part of Unity Week activities at U.C. San Diego, Bro. Kyle Brandon of
Eta Sigma (on left) and three brothers from
Alpha Delta (USC) conducted a step show.
