2011 Safe Harbor Awards
We would like to thank everyone who joined us at the festivities at the 10th
Annual Safe Harbor Awards and Silent Auction on May 19, 2011 at the
Crowne Plaza Hotel! We had about 180 guests as this years’ Safe Harbor,
Anchor, and Centennial recipients were honored. Many items were
donated by area businesses, members of the Board of Directors, and
friends and staff of Children’s Harbor Early Care and Education Centers
making for a fantastic Awards Ceremony and Silent Auction. Through
everyone’s participation, we have raised over $8,000! These proceeds will benefit all four of our
Children’s Harbor locations.

Event Highlights:
We were pleased to have Rabbi Arthur Steinburg
as our Master of Ceremonies for the evening. He
did a wonderful job orchestrating the event and
keeping the program lively, as well as timely. He is
the Rabbi of Temple Sinai in Portsmouth, VA
since the 1980s. He has been on numerous
boards and commissions throughout Hampton
Roads. A community activist, he has been
Vice-Chairman of: the Portsmouth Community
Services Board, the National Conference of Christians and Jews, the Hampton Roads
Board of Rabbis and as a board member of the Child and Family Service Agency,
The Children’s Care Fund, Tidewater Pastoral Counseling Services, and the Generic
Theatre of Norfolk. He has also served as the Jewish Chaplain of Old Dominion
University.
Award-Winning Author and Humorist
Hope Mihalap graced us with her presence
as the speaker for the evening. She is an
award-winning humorist with an ear for
accents and a warm message on good
communication. Her humor and insights
come from her background as a GreekAmerican married to a Russian, as well as
from her experience as private secretary to
Sir Rudolf Bing, temperamental general manager of the Metropolitan Opera. She
holds two of the most prestigious speaking awards in the world—the Mark Twain
Award for Humor, received also by such artists as Bob Hope, Danny Kaye, Phyllis
Diller, and Erma Bombeck and the Speaker Hall of Fame Award from the National
Speakers Association—the Oscar of the speaking profession.
