Cecilia Blomberg—Tapestry Artist
Cecilia Blomberg lives in Gig Harbor and has spent the past two years at Stirling Castle in Scotland, working on a project recreating "The Hunt of the Unicorn" tapestries. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for a
tapestry artist and we are fortunate to have her share her experience with us.
She was born in 1950 in Kimstad, Sweden. She grew up in Sundsvall and moved to Stockholm in 1970 where she
attended the National University College of Art, Craft and Design (Konstfack) and received her MFA in 1976.
Though she specializes in tapestry, she has also worked as a muralist and a graphics illustrator.
Since 1977 she has worked in the United States, producing tapestries for public and private collections, and
most recently a major piece for Grays Harbor College in Aberdeen, Washington. Ms. Blomberg's tapestries
have appeared in numerous national and international exhibitions and her work is represented in Contemporary Textile Art - Scandinavia, The State of the Arts, The State of the Crafts, Fiberarts Design Book I, IV, V,
VI and VII, World Tapestry Today, and a number of magazines.

President’s MessageHi Everyone - It’s time for another President’s Message
and my brain has jet-lag! My daughter, sister grandsons and I went to France! Whoopee!
We had a great time - we just had a little return
airline adventure and it took us a day longer and a stop
in Houston (that’s Texas) which we hadn’t planned on.
But - that’s the way it goes - we saw so much, ate so
much, met so many wonderful people, walked in ancient caves with art from people far back in time,
climbed castle steps, petted French kitties and doggies,
saw incredible paintings. I could show you my thousand pictures, but a lot of them seem to be of rooftops
and rivers and castles and grandchildren - all exciting

to me but maybe it would take more space than I have here.
Here’s what I learned about France:
-great food! Not a surprise
-chilly in April but no worse than here
-Old, old, old buildings, castles, etc. everywhere you look
-Versailles - so incredible - never seen such opulence, ever
-Metro & trains - so impressive and fast - also lots of stairs between stations - my suitcase is made very
well - bumpety-bump!
-nice people, surprisingly kind, warm and thoughtful
-clean - no litter!
-the Louvre - BIG - take at least a week just to get started—overwhelming!
-d’Orsay - fantastic art - easier to get through
-Eiffel Tower - also big and sparkly - I like it much more than I expected to
-Johnny Depp - not at home
I’m ready to go again in a minute. Just as soon as I add up my bills and figure out what those Euros
really cost in American money!
Well, maybe my brain will be back in working order before the next meeting. I hope you are coming
because our guest speaker is fantastic. Her weavings are works of art and she is so interesting—I can’t wait to
hear her tell about her adventures in Scotland. You don’t have to be a weaver or a fabric artist to enjoy seeing
Cecilia’s work and hearing her stories. See you there! Myrna

event says that the deadline for submissions is March 31, however the actual date for the jury to meet is April 28th. So

Earth Artisans is a new mixed media art gallery in historic Tenino, WA. The gallery features regional artists
in painting, ceramics, glass, wood, sculpture, jewelry, stained glass, wearable art, quilts, cards, and more. The
gallery is accepting artwork in all categories, but is especially interested in adding framed consignment work,

PLEIN AIR April/May
Peninsula Art League Plein Air season has started! Save Wednesday mornings (9am till lunch) to join Anne
Knapp in painting outdoors. Our 1st outings will range further afield- into Tacoma to start. Once we get into
prime painting time- Memorial Day to Labor Day- we will stay in the Harbor. Our locations then will be publicized at the Gig Harbor Visitor's Center. Information is posted to the PAL website (PeninsulaArtLeague.com)
and emailed upon request.
On our 1st paint out 4/09- on a supremely foggy and chill day- Ingrid Kager and I sought warmth in the Seymore Conservatory in Wright Park. It was warm all right- and delightful. They had an exhibit of glass blown
by students from Hilltop- it was very colorful (see photo).
Next week- 4/16, we go to explore the Puyallup bulb fields. If you wish to carpool- email Anne. If you drive

On 4/23 we go to The Museum of Glass in Tacoma (printable directions on their website). This will be fun

The Glass Museum so that I can arrange for group reduced rate
tickets. This trip will give us the unique opportunity to either
paint outside (a fascinating building) or inside in the Hot Shop!
(Bring a drop cloth!)
On April 30th we are invited to paint at Carol Valstyn’s house in
Cromwell area- wonderful views of water and hopefully Mt.
Rainier too.
May 7th- we go to Pt Defiance Park- soooo many choices- the
Rhododendron Gardens should be good, but then there’s the roses
(always early there) and the Oriental Garden.
May 14th- we head to the working waterfront in Tacoma- I plan to
base myself at or near Thea Foss park. If you ever admired Turner- this is your chance to try a similar subject
to his great waterfront paintings.

The PAL critique group meeting at the Gig Harbor Libbrary will have it's next meetings on 4/16/08 7:15pm and 5/21/08
6:30pm. There were 4 participants at the first meeting and everyone felt energized by the feedback, support
and sharing of knowledge and info. We had sharings of watercolor note cards, hand painted silk scarves , pastel , oil

This will be a figure and portrait workshop, working from the

Gig Harbor Summer Art Festival Poster Contest
We had a nice group of Posters done by art students at both Peninsula High School and Gig Harbor
High School, but had no entries from Henderson this year. The PAL board chose the best six posters based on
graphic impact, composition, and appropriate theme. The top six were displayed at the PAL Meeting and the
members voted to select the poster for 2008 Gig Harbor Summer Arts Festival.
The winners are:
1st Place- Arianna Smith- Peninsula High School $100 Award- this will be on Posters and T-shirts for our
Summer Arts Festival.
2nd Place- Johanna Walther- Peninsula High School- $50 Award
3rd Place- Kathryn Bronstad- Peninsula High School- $25 Award
The winning Teacher is Christine Burris who will receive a $100 Award also.
The students and the teacher, as well as the Gateway, will be invited to our meeting on April 24th to receive
their awards and photos will be in next month’s newsletter.
Charlee Glock-Jackson and Carol Valstyn are working to take jpegs of the winning poster and to develop the poster and advertising for the Festival.

PAL Board Meeting Tuesday March 25, 2008
Present: Myrna Binion, Carol Valstyn, Jon Lonning, Anne Knapp, George Milliken, Arvid Anderson, Sherry Weitzel, Virginia Alvarez, Debbie Dorn, Harry Sundberg, Christy Camerer, Harry Sundberg, Rhene Johns, and Charlee Glock-Jackson.
The meeting was called to order at 10:06am at Bogue Visitor Center.
The Minutes were approved as posted in the Newsletter.
Treasurer, Jon Lonning said that our net worth is $120,381.
Membership- Christy Camerer reported that the membership is at 238 and building. The website is helping; we can expect to possibly gain some Pt Orchard members as the So Kitsap Arts group is dissolving. All were reminded that we will need new people to
step up to serve on PAL board as Myrna and Anne are both stepping down next year and Carol Valstyn will need additional help
with the Festival. It is recommended that any members interested in joining the board would be welcome to attend a board meeting.
It was mentioned that it would be nice to have name tags again so that it would be easier to learn member’s names, etc. Christy is
going to bring the name tags that we have to the next meeting- maybe we can all make “individualized” tags for ourselves. It needs
to be each member’s responsibility to bring with them to the meeting.
Update on Meeting space- Myrna reported that we are set to meet at the school in March, April, and May. We are trying for the
Peninsula Church for June meeting. It has been very frustrating. All our members need to keep their eyes and ears open for properties or opportunities.
Update of Equipment expenditures and use: we now have computer plus digital projector and software to help forward PDF files
for newsletter and to do power point presentations with the projector. We will use it at the Thursday meeting. The projector was used
at the Festival screening.
Website- Charlie Glock-Jackson reported that there has not been many people sign up for the Member page offer ($65 for a webpage
with 3 images and a short bio, and an option for a link to the member’s own website). It was suggested that many members are not
computer savvy and maybe need a workshop to help them take part. It was suggested that perhaps Renee Crist could help. Several
people could bring lights to held do a workshop to take pictures and set up info for webpage. It was mentioned that people who already have their own website perhaps did not take advantage because all they really need is a link. It was proposed by George and
2nd by Sherry and unanimously approved that we off a link for members to their websites for only $20.
Art Festival- Carlo Valstyn reported that the screening of the vendors at St Nicholas went very smoothly. There were fewer vendors
applying this year, but we have plenty to fill the festival. We need to talk to the City and to the Police so that there are no conflicting
permits granted and if we have problems with the neighbor on Judson Street, it will be clear with the Police about what needs to be
done. The city of Gig Harbor wishes to have our presence downtown, and if that is so, they need to be more supportive. It was recommended that the PAL booth be located more on the main street and that we have better directional signage, especially for food
vendors. Virginia has been helping carol- she took care of getting all the postcards out to the vendors about screening.
Art Workshops- Mimi has enough people for the Grisham workshop- but room for a few more. It should be a fun water media
workshop. Sign ups will be coming soon for the Judy Morris workshop- it will go fast.
Regional Show- Debbie Dorn says she had a lot of entries, and she is getting a $2000 grant from the Gig Harbor Arts Commission.
She says she would like a secondary person for about 2 hours per month year round- to share coffee and ideas. We had notified other
arts groups, Christy said she can get lists from other groups to use for mailings. Jon Lonning will supply money for labels and postage.
Scholarship- Susan Paredes emailed a report. Earlier this year she met with the Art department at PHS to clarify the requirements
for scholarships. PAL wishes to stick to the requirement of a student making a scholarship notebook in order to apply for a PAL
scholarship. On March 25th she and her team judged the scholarship notebooks at Peninsula High School and on April 14th they will
do the same at Gig Harbor High School. She does not have a date yet for Henderson. She is in the process of refining Adult Scholarship requirements and the written guidelines will be available soon. She is setting up an easier way to track who got scholarships
when.
Member Shows- Rhene Johns reported that TCC Gig Harbor Campus would like to host another PAL show this Fall. Rhene is going
to make sure they give us more space this time.
Plein Air- Anne Knapp reported that the schedule for the Plein Air season is done and a complete schedule will be posted on the
website. We should meet on Wednesdays about 9am and paint till lunch, during summer, you can then take part in “Drawing you in”
at Skansie Brothers park if you like. We have some interesting outings planned in April- the Seymore Conservatory at Wright Park
on the 9th, The Daffodil Fields in Puyallup on the 16th, and the Tacoma Glass Art Museum on the 23rd. Any one who wishes to attend
the Glass Museum is welcome to paint outside on the grounds or even in the Hot Shop (with drop cloth)- we get a reduced fee if our
group is over 10 people ($8.00 each)- please email Anne Knapp if you plan to attend.
Poster Contest- Anne Knapp reported that she picked up posters from both Gig Harbor High and Peninsula High, but was unable to
get any poster from Henderson. The Posters were laid out and the board selected the 6 best posters- judging on graphic impact, composition, and appropriate theme. The top six will be displayed at the Meeting and the members will vote to select the poster for 2008.
Storage- Harry Sundberg said that there is a lot of miscellaneous stuff in the storage unit that has not been used in years and he
would like to clean some of it out so that there is more room for the usable items. Carol Valstyn asked for advice on how many years
back she should keep receipts/information from the Festival. Consensus was that 2 years was probably adequate for our needs.

We have heard from our PAL Members that a number of people already have their own
Web Pages and they would like to have a link to our Member Gallery page on our website. It
was discussed at our last Board Meeting and decided to offer a Link only for $20.00 for our
members.
We get a lot of “hits” from all over the country and we are linked to other groups and to
the city of Gig Harbor, so for $20.00, your website will be opened up to a lot of connections.
It doesn’t matter how good your website is if no one can find it!
Please understand, PAL doesn’t make any money from this process. The website Member Gallery is a service to our Members and is an opportunity for people to get their paintings
posted online without having to pay for their own website or maintain a website. However, to
have an attractive gallery, we do need cooperation and participation!

Michele Sleight and Marti Green are new to PAL this year - they are good friends, both from the Olalla area.
They started volunteering for PAL as soon as they joined (much appreciated!) and are in charge of Members’s
Screenings for our shows. Marti recently took a trip to China which was a great thrill. Michele and Marti are

FOX Island Painters- There is a Wednesday painting group that gathers at 10:00 AM until 2:30 PM at Nichols
Community Center, on Fox Island. There are oil, pastel and watercolor painters at present. Any interested artist is
