In this celebration, we look at Christ the victim. Jesus Christ, who obediently did the Father’s will, died on the Cross as the only sacrifice for the redemption of the sins of humanity. The Mass is a sacrifice. At the holy sacrifice of the Mass, Jesus is the victim, the Body and Blood that we share at Holy Communion. The Body of Christ that we receive as the Eucharist is also called host. Here is an interesting excerpt from Alateia, which is a modified write-up of the reflection of Fray José Ariovaldo da Silva, OFM, about how the Eucharist also came to be known as host: “The Romans referred to a vanquished enemy offered to the gods as a hostis. The term became common in Western Christianity because of its use in the Vulgate to signify sacrifice. Thus “host” came to refer to the greatest victim of human aggression: God-made-man, crucified and risen. Christians adopted the word “host” to refer to the immolated Lamb who was risen and present in the Eucharist. It came to signify the reality that Christ himself unveiled at the Last Supper: “This is my body … this is my blood, poured out for you.” The consecrated bread is thus a “host,” the true host, the true victim, the Body of the Risen One, once mortally assaulted by human evil and now alive among us, surrendered to us as food and drink: Take and eat.” o0o Reverence to the Paschal Victim. I wonder how we truly believe that Christ is truly present in the Eucharist. Observing our practices, I somehow dismissed the possible truth that we have misunderstood the sacredness of the Eucharist that we receive at Mass and the Eucharist that we reserve in the Tabernacle or the Eucharistic Adoration Chapel. Fray da Silva observes that “much of the significance of the word “host” has been lost, and it has come to refer simply to the circular piece of unleavened bread, both before and after consecration.” At the Mass, we are invited to a full and conscious participation in the mysteries we celebrate. This invitation is sound due to the very nature of the focus of the celebration. The Body and Blood of Christ, the sacrifice for the redemption of humanity, must be held with high respect and honor due to the very nature of the mystery that the Eucharist is. Fray da Silva said, “To adore this “host” is to surrender oneself to the mystery so as to live it day after day. And to enter into Communion with this “host” is to assimilate this mystery in the whole of our being so as to become like Christ: a victim, given in service to our brothers.” o0o To make Eucharistic adoration our devotion, we have the Eucharistic Adoration Chapel made for 24 hours/seven days available. Consider visiting the chapel and experience the benefits of being in communion with Christ present in the Blessed Sacrament. Also the altar of reservation (Tabernacle) is now placed in the sanctuary, the place of reverence for the reserved Body of Christ. The Tabernacle in the sanctuary invites us to draw ourselves fully to the celebrations we do every Sunday. Corpus Christi. For the repose of the souls of all the faithful departed: George Poorman, Randall Here is the concluding part of the previous article written by Fr. Richard Heilman which I have included in the bulletin in parts. In the previous issues of the bulletin, Fr. Heilman was talking about his epiphany to the sense of the sacred when he was assigned in a parish. In his assignment as a parish priest, he discerned about the “situation’ of the liturgy and found that worship has never been in disarray due to differing approaches done with the Mass after the Vatican II. Fr. Heilman is convinced that to go back to the sacred, one must experience awe to the glory of God. Awe and wonder before the Lord, he said, is an effective way to receive the blessings of the Holy Spirit. But the evil one has designed tactics that take us away from this awe and wonder. The two strategies of the evil are 1. Cut us off from supply lines and 2. Divide and conquer. Here is the continuation and final words of Fr. Heilman. AN OPEN LETTER TO ALL THOSE LOOKING TO RESTORE A SENSE OF THE SACRED (Part IV) Fr. Richard Heilman April 11, 2016 THE STRATEGY 2) Divide and conquer – The second modern tactic of the devil is actually the very ancient military strategy of “divide and conquer.” This strategy is defined as one that separates a force that would be stronger if united. As we said, the devil is roaming around like a lion that sizes up the herd to find the easiest target. He is also watching to see who is separated from the herd. Large, coordinated forces are difficult to defeat. If the enemy can separate us into small units or individuals, he can more easily defeat each one. In 1957, just two years before the call for the Second Vatican Council and the crisis of faith that followed, and just before the revolutionary decade of the 1960s, Sister Lucia (the primary seer at Fatima) said: “The devil is in the mood for engaging in a decisive battle against the Blessed Virgin, as he knows what it is that offends God the most, and in a short space of time will gain for him(self) the greatest number of souls. Thus the devil does everything to overcome the souls consecrated to God, because in this way he will succeed in leaving the souls of the faithful abandoned by their leaders, thereby the more easily will he seize them.” “Strike the shepherd and the sheep scatter” (Zec 13:7). There’s no doubt that the devil has focused his assault on the religious leaders of our day. While these leaders may have had noble intentions of charity and pastoral sensitivity, the results have been devastating. Decades of lenient, non-confrontational leadership have left the faithful feeble and prone to be “conformed to the pattern of this world” (Rom 12:2). St. Augustine once said, “Charity is no substitute for justice withheld.” The unfortunate laxity of discipline has permitted confusion and strife where there should be clarity and harmony, an authentic unity based on the truth. As a result, the modern trend among those who believe and teach falsehoods that directly contradict the Church’s teaching is to consider these pockets of dissent as merely “differing tribes” within the Catholic Church. In this deceptive tribal system, those who believe in and teach all that the Church teaches are then considered extreme among these tribes. Right or wrong, religious leadership seemed to calculate that it is better to refrain from “charged issues” for fear of offending some or even losing members. However, St. Peter Canisius cautioned: “Better that only a few Catholics should be left, staunch and sincere in their religion, than that they should, remaining many, desire as it were to be in collusion with the Church’s enemies and in conformity with the open foes of our faith.” It is counter-productive if we have “some” parishes looking to restore a sense of the sacred, while others do not. This is a growing phenomenon that only sees parishioners picking and choosing the parish “doing the Mass” the way they like. It’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks. The older we get, the more we tend to stick with “the way we have done it before.” For the most part, we are seeing older adults choosing the modernized version of the Mass because they have grown accustomed to it. In the meantime, young adults find this modern version kitschy and mundane, and many end up leaving the practice of their faith altogether. However, there is growing evidence that, when these younger adults find parishes who are working hard to restore a sense of the sacred, they return to the faith. Younger adults seem more open and drawn to this sense of the sacred that assists them in breaking through to that trigger gift of awe and wonder. Because of these differences, parishes then end up making their “directional choice” based on “what will attract the most,” rather than what is actually the right thing to do. Since older adults tend to maintain their practice of the faith, most parishes resist losing their parishioners to the neighboring parish by working toward a restoration of the sense of the sacred. It is time to “rally the troops” … to get on the same page. It’s time to assemble a coalition of leading experts in our time to formulate “the plan” to “Restore a Sense of the Sacred.” There are obvious names that come to mind: Cardinal Burke, Bishop Schneider, Fr. John Zuhlsdorf, and a score of Cardinals, Bishops, priests and laity who understand this critical need in our time; a time that is witnessing a mass exodus from the pews, and is allowing a multitude of souls to be in peril of eternal damnation. It’s time for this coalition to work with Cardinal Sarah, Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, in designing the plan that all parishes will be instructed to follow. Is this the first move? One would hope. But, if this call for a coalition would, at first, go unheeded, would that then mean developing a petition to circulate, in order to emphasize the widespread call for such a coalition? IN CONCLUSION I wrote this letter as a simple parish priest who laments, day by day, the many souls being swept away by secular trends and fads (inside and outside of our Church), leaving their souls in great peril of eternal damnation. I can’t find it in me to just sit by and allow that to happen, while I am convinced there is, in fact, a solution to save many of these souls. Some find it easy to talk about such things as “the Church does not so much move in years, but in centuries,” as a way to dismiss our need to do anything drastic in our times. While that may be true, I also know that the disintegration of the liturgy and the stripping out of our churches were inflicted, virtually, overnight. Call me a dreamer, but I believe this restoration can occur as quickly as did the disintegration. Finally, for those who believe such a restoration is too difficult; that such things as sacred music is beyond the talents of most typical parishes, I wanted to share this video entitled “Cor Mariae Choir sings Ave Verum Corpus” on Youtube. (Look it up.) These eight teenage girls from rural Wisconsin had virtually no professional training. Yes … they were self-taught. They just decided this was important, and proceeded to go about to make it happen. With their help, our parish was able to serve almost 200 children from the age of 3—6th grade. This number includes over 100 children receiving First Reconciliation and First Eucharist this year! As this was my first year in this position, I was able to spend time observing and learning how this program works. One thing that was resoundingly clear was the amount of caring and preparation put in by each catechist. The children of our parish were definitely in good hands! I was additionally pleased to witness the commitment and support from the families and parishioners. It is through all our parish family working together that we continue to build our faith community for many generations. I am excited to see where the next few years will take us! Tetzel’s Celebration June 5th beginning at 11am Thank you to those who chipped in to make this celebration possible for Tetzel! Tetzel has been such a big part of our parish, especially with the youth, we want to let him know in no uncertain terms how much we appreciate him and wish him well. Please join us at his Mass of Thanksgiving for becoming a priest on Sunday, June 5th at 11am. Immediately following there will be a reception in the Gathering Space and the Gym. Thank you so much for helping make this a terrific day of Thanksgiving for Father Tetzel! See you there! Notice of Upcoming Big Events & Crowded Parking Just to give everyone a heads-up about crowded seating and parking conditions for the following event: June 5th - Graduation Mass will be at the 8:30 am Mass with a reception following, then Tetzel will have his Thanksgiving Mass as a new priest at 11 am, with a LARGE reception to follow. At all Masses this day, participants can expect snug seating and packed parking. With the receptions between, there won’t be the usual clearing of cars between Masses. We recommend those who have the option of attending Saturday evening Mass instead of the ones mentioned above may not only be more comfortable, but would also lighten the load for participants in the big events. Anyone who will be attending the big events - maybe you can work out carpooling? Or - just expect to park a ways out. We hope to block off more parking for those who need to park closer for health reasons. Please respect any cones or signs that are posted. Thank you for your understanding. St. Mary’s will honor veterans at our 8:30am Mass Monday, May 30th. There will be coffee and cookies in the Gathering Space after Mass. You are then invited to participate in the local ceremonies to honor our veterans. The ceremony in Timber Linn will last about an hour, there will be a guest speaker from the command staff of the Oregon National Guard followed by the laying of wreaths to honor those who have died in service to their country. Taps will be sounded by bugle, and a NROTC Honor Guard will fire a 21 gun rifle salute. Following the ceremony, all attendees and participants in the ceremony will retire to Post 10 of the American Legion for a free spaghetti luncheon.
