Thanksgiving
In 1621 the pilgrims that were left to
survive had celebrated a successful harvest of
the English custom. They did not call this a real
Thanksgiving. They gave thanks to God, but this
was never called Thanksgiving until 1623. This
was the year that it was put on record. This was
held do to a response to a providential rainfall.
There were fifty-three pilgrims at the first
Thanksgiving: four married women, five young
girls, nine young boys, thirteen younger
children, and twenty-two men. This has led to
us having a Thanksgiving every year since then.
On our Thanksgivings now we have a Macy’s
Day Parade. Since 1924, there are usually two
to three million people that join every year and
it keeps getting bigger every year. There is
always a NFL football game on also.
This year at MHS we will be having our
Thanksgiving party for our seniors. This is a
tradition at MHS. Thanks to Mrs. Wilkins we
have get to have this party. Thanks to Mrs.
Harris and Mrs. Stricklett also because they are
letting us use their room for our party and
making all of our food to eat at the party. Mrs.
Harris’s kids will be helping cook the food and
will be joining us in the party also.

Current Events
Cyclops Shark
We all know that there can be some
pretty strange and creepy creatures in the
world. What we
don’t know is if
everything we
see on the
internet and in
media are the
creature’s real
features. There
are several different programs that allow one to
design and edit photos in many different ways.
Despite this, there are the chances of getting
lucky like a commercial fisherman and catching
an abnormal creature. The fisherman was
fishing in the Gulf of California when he caught
a pregnant shark. They cut open the dusky
shark and saw a shark with some creepy
abnormalities. It was white and didn’t have a
nose. Instead, it had one eye in the center of its
face. The reports of this creature have traveled
all over the media and it is the real thing. It was
not edited at all. It was unlikely to survive
outside of the womb. The fisherman is keeping
the remains for now, until more research is
complete.

Lions, Tigers, Bears- Oh My!
On
October 19,
2011 a man
set loose over
fifty
wild
animals
in
Zanesville,
Ohio.
Ohio
instantly
began to panic. Whenever deputies arrived to
the location they saw various animals, such as:
bears, Bengal tigers, leopards and lions. The
deputies had to act fast, so these animals
wouldn’t escape into the night and be more of
harm to the people in the town. Hoping they
will return to their cages, police are putting
animal feed in them; but if they won’t return,
unfortunately because of town safety- the
animals have to be put to rest. A dart gun would
agitate and confuse the animals of their
surroundings. The alleged animal freer,
Thompson, served a year in prison for weapon
charges. Over thirty-five calls were made to
complain over the years that this man wasn’t
treating his animals properly. After setting loose
these aggressive animals, he took his own life.
There are three animals still on the loose. It’s
sad that these animals might lose their lives
because of one man’s choice.

Veteran receives medals 66 years late!
A Utah man relived the horrors of being
a Japanese prisoner at a war camp during World
War II this month. More than six decades after
being freed, a mysterious package showed up
on retired Army Captain Tom Harrison’s doorstep. Harrison is now ninety-three years-old.
The mysterious package contained seven metals
from the Army. After the bombing of Pearl
Harbor forced the United States into the war,
Harrison spent months fighting the Japanese
before American and Filipino troops
surrendered at the Battle of Bataan.
“It brings back memories, but also
makes you feel like somebody appreciated your
service," Harrison said while sitting in his living
room with the medals. The honorary military
medals included the Distinguished Service Cross
and the Silver Star; these are two of the highest
earned
The medals sparked a new interest to
his eager family about the war, Harrison said,
although he is resistant to talk at length about
When asked about his personal experiences of
being a prisoner of war he said, "I can still
remember it all, even after such a long time. I
don't like to bring it up, but I'll talk about it if
asked.”

Bringing Our Men Home
On Friday, October 14, 2011, President
Barack Obama told the nation that he plans to
fulfill his promise. Obama said, “As promised,
the rest of our troops in Iraq will come home by
the end of the year. After nearly nine years,
America's war in Iraq will be over. Today I can
say that troops in Iraq will be home for the
holidays." This promise marks a great step to
our future. The nine year battle in Iraq is finally
coming to an end.
More than 4,400 American military
members have been killed, and another 2,000
wounded since the U.S. invasion. It has been
told that the only people that will be staying in
Iraq are a few men that can keep the Iraqi Arabs
and Kurds from fighting over the oil. Other than
that, they will be home soon.

Shakin’ Things Up
On
Sunday, October
23, 2011, there
was
a
huge
earthquake that
struck
through
eastern Turkey. This earthquake had a
magnitude at 7.2. Dozens of building collapsed,
killing at least eighty-two people and hundreds
were feared dead. There was an estimated
death toll of 500-1,000.
The city that was hit the hardest with
this earthquake was
Ercis.
There
were
almost eighty buildings
with people trapped
inside. It was said that
about 117 people were
killed in Ercis, while 740
were injured. More than 100 aftershocks were
recorded within ten hours of the quake. One
aftershock had a magnitude of 6.0.
Plenty of help was sent out to the
region, around 1,275 rescue teams from thirtyeight different provinces. It is said that Turkey
lies in one of the most dangerous zones for
earthquakes. In 1999, two earthquakes with a
greater magnitude than seven struck
northwestern Turkey, killing about 18,000
people.
