Good time
T
he Second Annual Mutt
Strutt held at Sunnyside
Park in Pullman was a great
success! The event generated
over $7,000 towards Whitman
County’s first dog park. The Dog
Park Committee is THRILLED to
announce that the proceeds will be
used for construction of the fence,
which has begun!

The Mutt Strutt could not have been such a success without
the generosity and support of the community. Special thanks go out
to our generous sponsors, to all our wonderful vendors, to the
members of the Mutt Strutt Committee,
to all our dedicated
volunteers, to our
caring community,
to our dog-loving
donors, and
especially to our
puppy-parading
participants.
Lastly, many thanks
to Heather Kelley,
Mutt Strutt Event
Coordinator, for
her hard work and
determination.

Whitman County’s First Dog Park
has Begun Construction!
W
ork on the Dog Park, located on AnimalHaven hill, has kicked off with
the installation of over 900 feet of fence. The complete fence, including
perimeter fencing, the divider fence separating the large dog and small dog
areas, and the entry gate, should be completed December first!
The park totals two acres in size and has been deigned to include separate
areas for large and small dogs to provide safe socialization for all visitors.
Entry to the park is a tri-gate system, keeping dogs already in the park safe
from accidental escape while new dogs enter. This fence is just the first step
to providing a safe place for dogs to exercise, socialize, and have fun.
The fencing accounts for approximately twenty percent of the Dog Park’s
$64,000 construction budget. In order for the Dog Park to open, many other
components need to be installed, including underground irrigation, tough
grass, and a secure electronic card entry system. The Dog Park will also
include amenities sponsored by local donors such as engraved benches and
water fountains for both pups and their people.
Approximately twenty-five percent of the funding required for the park has
already been raised. The Dog Park’s annual fall fundraiser, Mutt Strutt, has
raised approximately eleven thousand dollars over the past two years and
considerable contributions have been made by generous community members.
If you would like to help complete Whitman County’s first Dog Park,
donations can be sent to WCHS’ administrative office at P.O. Box 453,
Pullman, WA 99163. Please note on the check that it is for the Dog Park. Or
make a donation online at www.whitmanpets.org/dogpark. Contact us for
information on sponsoring park amenities at (509) 332-2246. Thank you!

K
has a Silver lining…
n American Staffordshire dog is looking for his silver lining
this holiday season. “Pit bulls” have received a bad rap the
past several years. However, with training, patience, and the right
home, these dogs – like ANy dog – can make wonderful family pets.
Vancouver has been patiently awaiting his chance for a new start
in a loving home.
Vancouver
Vancouver was found chained to the AnimalHaven dumpster one
Saturday morning. He appears to be 3-4 years old and weighs close
to 100 lbs. He is very strong but challenges his breed stereotype
with his loving demeanor. He appears to have a strong prey drive
so he has a tendency to chase things that run from him if allowed
to do so. For this reason, Vancouver should not to go a home with
cats or small dogs. Small children may also be a concern if they
are unfamiliar and/or uncomfortable around dogs. Vancouver also
gets along with some – but not all – dogs, so proper introductions
and patience will be needed if you already own a dog. Vancouver is
very friendly towards people. He occasionally becomes very excited
sometimes in their presence, so he will need strict obedience
training, to ensure that he will behave properly. Vancouver will
definitely be a forever friend to the right family.
Please feel free to stop by the shelter at 1340 SE Old Moscow Road in
Pullman to get to know this guy and provide him with his silver lining.
Kindness lives on
athleen Elizabeth Sain, 58, of Pullman,
passed away on Tuesday, August 4, 2009
at her Pullman home. She named WCHS as
beneficiary of her life insurance and WSU
retirement.
Kathleen was born on September 15, 1950
in Colorado Springs, Colorado to James
and Maxine Sain. Kathleen grew up and
attended school in Colorado Springs,
graduating from Cheyenne Mountain High
School in 1968. She began her studies at
the University of Colorado in Boulder,
where she received her Bachelor of Fine
Arts degree in 1976. Kathleen then received
her Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from the
University of Puget Sound in 1979. It was
during her master’s work that Kathleen
spent a year in Kyoto, Japan studying
pottering as part of her master’s program.
Upon completion of her studies, Kathleen
worked as a teaching assistant, art
instructor and graphic artist while living
in Tacoma, Washington. In 1987 she moved
to Pullman, where she began her career
at Washington State University Libraries.
Kathleen began as a library technician in
the Technical Services Division. Her time in
the libraries was all spent in the Technical
Services Division, where she diligently
performed her work in serial record and
preservation/binding. Kathleen also was
a technical editor for graduate students’
thesis programs.
Kathleen attended the Community
Congregational United Church of Christ in
Pullman. She is survived by her sister, Linda
Sain of Ocala, Florida and was preceded in
death by her parents.
Whitman County Humane Society was
the recipient of two large bequests upon
Kathleen’s passing. All those at WCHS
would like to personally thank Kathleen
for her generosity and kindness. Her act of
kindness will continue to live on to benefit
the homeless animals of WCHS.

typical food drive!
Whitman County Humane Society
would like to thank Dissmore’s IGA in
Pullman for another terrific pet food
and adoption drive, held Oct. 12-18,
2010, where we earned over $200 from
customer’s generosity in purchasing
items at the grill and in cash
donations. The pet food and supplies
Dissmore’s collects twice a year greatly
helps our shelter, reducing our animal
care and cleaning costs. We couldn’t
do it without the wonderful staff at
Dissmore’s or the generosity of the
community. Check back soon for the
final tally!

Stryker, the black la
hank aaron -
the hero
On January 24, 2009, Hank Aaron,
a Labrador retriever adopted
from WCHS shelter lived up to
his name. Wayne Beebe and
Hank Aaron were on a typical walk along
a closed country road when Wayne lost his footing
on the ice. His fall resulted in a severe ankle break (in five places that is).
Wayne quickly realized he couldn’t walk or stand.
Hank Aaron understood his adopter’s distress. For the next two hours, as
Wayne crawled on his hands and knees the long mile back to the main
highway, Hank Aaron stayed close by, nudging Wayne when he got tired
or felt like giving up. Finally, they made it to the main road and, as luck
would have it, a couple had pulled over to let their dog out (also adopted
from WCHS!). They were able to summon an ambulance.
Because of the actions and support Hank provided to his owner, he
was awarded the Red Cross hometown hero’s award in October 2010!
Congratulations, Hank and Wayne!
