April 2013
By Laura L. Lansrud-Lopez
Greetings! The past three months have
been full of growth, activity, and inspiration.
Springtime in New Mexico is a time for purple and white lilacs, crisp light blue mornings
and warm orange afternoons, and fresh
green life emerging from dry brown
branches. And juniper pollen (sneeze!).
NMATA has established a solid foundation and started to build momentum during
the Winter. We emerge this Spring bursting
with life, renewed energy, exciting plans,
innovative ideas, and bounding enthusiasm.
I am proud to introduce our two new
committees: the Legislative Action Committee, co-chaired by Jill Campoli and Diane
Chavez, and the Social Media Committee,
chaired by Molly Doerner.
Our Legislative Action Committee has
been hard at work assessing the needs of
Art Therapists in NM and strategizing plans
to meet those needs. First on their agenda is
tackling insurance company credentialing for
licensed professional art therapists.
Our Social Media Committee has successfully established a thriving online presence for NMATA through our website and
blogs and on Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter,
and most recently, Instagram. Next, we plan
to tackle Google+ and LinkedIn.
In the past 4 months our Facebook page
has skyrocketed from only 250 “likes” to over
1400, and the numbers increase daily. Our
Pinterest boards have over 100 followers, and
we Tweet about upcoming workshops and
events to dozens of people regularly.
As many of you know, social media is a
crucial frontier for connecting, sharing, and
collaborating in this digital age. Developing
and maintaining an active online presence is
crucial to our ability to advocate for Art Therapy locally as well as develop relationships
across New Mexico, the US, and internationally.
In the past 3 months, NMATA held our
first chapter meeting of 2013, sponsored an
Expressive Arts training workshop, cosponsored three Art Workshops with Southwestern College, and collaborated with the
New Mexico Social Workers association
(NASW-NM) to bring the restorative power of
art making to their annual conference in Albuquerque.
On the horizon: inspiring monthly art workshops, quarterly meetings and training workshops, new and exciting collaborations with
our social worker and counseling colleagues at
NASW-NM and NMASERVIC, state-wide outreach, legislative action, and abundant colorful
celebration for the life-enhancing power of
creativity.

Legislative Action Update
By Jill Campoli & Diane Chavez
“Creativity
is contagious,
pass it on.”
-Albert Einstein
The NMATA Legislative
Action Committee is working
to bring a bill to the legislature in the state of New Mexico which, when passed,
would allow the services of a
Licensed Professional Art
Therapist (LPAT) reimbursable by insurance companies.
New Mexico has been a
leader in the field of Art
Therapy, creating the nations first professional state
license. We have currently
been receiving support and
advice from Debbie Good,
who was the force behind
this historic moment for art
therapy in NM in the 1990's.
Jill Campoli and Diane
Chavez, our Legislative Action Committee co-chairs,
along with committee members, Alison Janes and
Camille Grec are taking the
first steps towards awareness and education about art
therapy, building support and
allies for the field and lastly,
they are creating a long term
plan that will lead this bill into
the legislature in 2015… and
beyond.
Upcoming actions include:
 State-wide outreach
 Creation of a “What is Art
Therapy?” Stop Action
animation for educating
and informing the public
 Identify and connect with
potential allies in the mental health field
 Develop a webpage devoted to LAC activities,
news, and updates
 Recruit support from community members

Collaborating to Inspire Hope with NASW-NM
By Aimee Jo
I love catching therapeutic art-making in unexpected venues. This year I
volunteered at the National
Association of Social Workers (NASW) New Mexico
Chapter Annual Conference,
held in Albuquerque, NM.
I assisted Gina Bryant
with a visioning collage
workshop. She provided
plain paper, glue sticks, and
an astonishing collection of
magazines for over sixty
participating social workers.
After listening to Gina’s
description and personal
process of visioning, attendees began enthusiastically
making their art, tearing im-
ages from magazines and
getting lost in their internal
landscape of dreams. One
workshop participant said
she hadn’t smiled that much
in a long time… It was
beautiful to witness.
I also assisted with the
“Tapestry of Hope” workshop boot at the conference,
where individuals were offered space and invited to
decorate fabric panels with
ribbon, buttons, and assorted craft materials. Attendees adorned the fabric
squares with quotes and
images to evoke a feeling of
healing and hope within
themselves and others at the
conference. The tapestry
was hung at the back of the
conference room, inspiring
others to contribute creatively.
Both the Visioning Collage Workshop and Tapestry of Hope booth involved
therapeutic art-making, and
the attendees (including me)
responded favorably to the
invitation to make art. I had
fun! The hope-themed conference provided needed
personal inspiration as well.
It was a great experience,
and I definitely recommend
supporting the NASW-NM
Annual Conference in years
to come.
Aimee Jo is an Art Therapy
Graduate Student at Southwestern College.
NMATA is currently
exploring avenues for
collaborations and co
-sponsorship of conferences with NASWNM , NMASERVIC,
and other professional groups in order
to share the joys of
creative expression,
and advance the field
of art therapy in New
Mexico.
Introducing “The Santa Fe Community Arts Center”
By Magdalena Karlick
Something exciting is being formed: The
Santa Fe Community Arts Center! Sali Randel, the founder of the SFCAC which will include space for an open art studio, has this
vision:
“To provide a safe space for people to
come together and nurture creativity and artistic expression. Artists of all income levels
will be welcome to use the open studio. A
cooperative coalition of creative people will be
brought together to share Gallery space,
workshops, and synergy in keeping the core
of our “City Different” a home to celebrate our
diversity.”
NMATA is co-sponsoring an Art Supply
Swap and Donation event, with Southwestern
College, on Sunday, April 21st, from 2-5pm,
to gather our communities and share creative
tools for helping to start the new Open Art
Studio. The new studio will be similar to OffCenter in Albuquerque.
You can donate supplies to the Swap
and the Santa Fe Community Arts Center,
or you can be part of the Swap!
Please fill out the donation form and
leave with your supplies which will let the
organizers know your intentions. Email Kat
at [email protected] to request the donation form or download it from our website.
If you decide to be a part of the swap,
you will receive your tickets on the day of
the event. Folks who don’t have supplies to
swap may also participate and purchase
$1 / $5 tickets on April 21st.
There will be live music and performance art!
Join us at the beginning stages of this
new space, bridging Santa Fe’s artful communities.
When: April 21, 2013, 2-5pm
Where: 314 S. Guadalupe Street,
Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The New Mexico Art Therapy Association is founded on the belief that art
making is healing and life enhancing; that creativity benefits the human
condition; that cultural proficiency is essential when working with children, families, and communities; and that professional integrity and
competency is of utmost importance when serving the public.
Our mission is to provide a safe place for meaningful connections between people who share an interest in the therapeutic use of art making
and creative expression in New Mexico.
Our vision is to engage in the progressive development of art therapy
and use of expressive therapies in clinical practice. We provide continuing education, training, and workshops with the aim of advancing the
field of art therapy and to facilitate networking and collaboration among
art therapists, students, and professionals in New Mexico.
