CONSTRUCTION: I’m reminded of
the planning and the intense connection between what we want students to achieve
and what we build. Even though the length of time between the conversations
about those two things (learning and building) is immense, they are connected. I
look forward to breaking ground in Spring 2016 on the ten-class room, two story, Jwing to house our current Science, Technology, Engineering, Math courses.
ATHLETICS: I’ve always been a spectator and

the hours that students and coaches devote to their
sports. I look forward to continuing the Wildcat momentum.
As I wave bon voyage to Class of 2015 seniors, I offer my best wishes to all of
them for a successful future. And to all the Wildcats returning for next year, I offer
my best wishes for a safe summer.
It’s been another great year to be a Wildcat!

viendo hacia adelante y algunos

Teen Dating Violence
By Maria Horwich, LMFT Site Director,
Redwood High School
Adolescence is an exciting and turbulent time for many of our teens. It is at this age that many of our children start dating.
Many parents I meet are surprised that teen relationships are sometimes abusive. In a nationwide survey, 9.4 percent of
high school students reported being hit, slapped, or physically hurt on purpose by their boyfriend or girlfriend in the 12
months prior to the survey. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011 Y outh Risk Behavior Survey). About 1 in 5
women and nearly 1 in 7 men who ever experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner, first
experienced some form of partner violence between 11 and 17 years of age (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
2010 National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey). We know that teen dating violence affects all races, religions, sexual orientation and socio-economic status.
As teens develop emotionally, they are strongly influenced by their relationship experiences. Healthy relationship behaviors can have a positive effect on a teen’s emotional development. Unhealthy, abusive or violent relationships can cause
both short and long term negative effects to the developing teen. Victims of teen dating violence are more likely to do
poorly in school, and report binge drinking, suicide attempts, and physical fighting. Victims may also carry unhealthy behaviors and violence into future relationships.
We know that domestic violence is a learned behavior. Adolescents are getting messages about what is and is not acceptable in a relationship from their friends, family, and the media on a daily basis. Unfortunately, many of these messages communicate that violence in a relationship is okay, and/or that violence is an acceptable way to express anger. Violence is
never acceptable.
Is my child at risk?
Risks of having unhealthy relationships increase for teens who:

Believe it's okay to use threats or violence to get their way or to express frustration or anger.

Use alcohol or drugs.

Can't manage anger or frustration.

Hang out with violent peers.

Have multiple sexual partners.

Have a friend involved in dating violence.

Are depressed or anxious.

Have learning difficulties and other problems at school.

Don't have parental supervision and support.

Witness violence at home or in the community.
 Have a history of aggressive behavior or bullying
As parents, we are constantly modeling behaviors for our children. The best way to prevent your child from ending up in
an abusive relationship is to model healthy behavior for them. Rather than hide all conflict from your children, let them see
you and your partner work through a conflict while managing uncomfortable emotions like anger and jealousy, and treating
others with respect. Show your kids that a conflict does not automatically mean screaming and throwing things.
Make sure that you speak to your child about what healthy and unhealthy relationships look like. Talk to them about
boundaries- what they are, how to set them and what to do when someone violates a boundary. Teach them about the difference between being assertive and being aggressive and when such behaviors are acceptable.
Strive to maintain open communication with your teen. Make sure they know that if they are in a relationship they are unsure of, they can come to you. Avoid shaming your child- this is negative reinforcement and will likely cause your teen to
keep things from you. You want to make sure that your child knows what is healthy and that they can come to you for help.
(Continued on page 11)

May/June 2015 Communicat
(Continued from page 10)
What To Look For:
There are several signs that your child may be in an abusive relationship. This includes a partner who acts jealous and
controlling (this could look like monitoring your child’s phone, telling them what clothes they can and cannot wear); your
child is spending all their time with the partner and dropping friends and activities; your teen appears to be depressed or
angry; your child has unexplained injuries.
Unfortunately, only 40% of victims seek help. Of those that do, 3% tell an authority figure, 6% tell a family member,
75% tell a friend. This tells us that a teen in this situation is far more likely to tell a friend than an adult. Teens tell me
they don’t want their parents to know because they feel ashamed (how could I have picked such a person?) or they fear
judgment and/or punishment from their parents. What you can do is let your child know that their safety is your number
one concern and that if they come to you for help you will provide it- without shame or punishment.
Adolescent Counseling Services is a community non-profit, which provides vital counseling services on nine secondary
campuses at no charge to students and their families. To learn more about our services please visit the ACS website at
www.acs-teens.org or call Charlotte Villemoes, LMFT Site Director at Woodside (650) 367-9750 ext. 45327. ACS relies
on the generosity of community members to continue offering individual, family, and group counseling to over 1,500 individuals annually. ACS provides critical interventions and mental health services, building a better future for tomorrow.
If you are interested in helping to support our efforts, do not hesitate to call to make a donation. It goes a long way in
helping teenagers find their way!

Music Boosters Update
Here we are with the last Communicat of the year; it just seems I was welcoming you all
to the new school year.
April was a busy month for the Music Department. Our students went on tour to Southern
California and along the way performed in music clinics, at Sierra High outside Fresno
and at the Heritage Music Festival in Southern California. The students did a tremendous
job and were great ambassadors for WHS.
Music
Boosters
We then all kicked back and enjoyed the Saturday of the tour at Universal Studios Park. That evening
we attended to awards ceremony.
Now looking forward to May, on the 7th will be the Music Department’s Spring Concert at 7 p.m.
Please invite family and friends to come hear these talented groups of musicians. And admission is a
great deal – FREE.
During the month the Wildcat Marching Band will participate in the Town of Woodside’s May Day
Parade. Then at the end of the month their final parade appearance of the year will be in the San Carlos Hometown Parade.
Then on the 15th we will honor all our students at our award ceremony.
What a great end to a great year. Have a great and restful summer – see you in August!
A Message from the Drama Boosters President
Can you believe it's May!? What a great year we have had! I hope you were able to catch
at least one of the two amazing productions provided to us by the Woodside Drama Department. In "Every Family Has One" we saw great performances as we had a look into
the lives of two families coming together for the marriage of two mis-matched young
people. We were treated to a great performances in every part from the crazy granny, to
the unwelcome cousin/niece, to the unsure bride-to-be and everyone in between.
Drama
Boosters
In March we got a glimpse into a fictitious 1960s company called the World Wide Wickets company
with a young rising star following the advise of a book and his own intuition and quick wit. Again, we
were given wonderful performances from this rising star, to the company president, to the presidents
"girlfriend" and his nephew, to the rising star's girlfriend and everyone in between from secretaries to
Board Members.
Supporting, guiding, directing, and choreographing all of this was an amazing team of Barry Woodruff
(Director), Kim Harvath (Choreographer and Co-Producer), Karen Peterson (Co-Producer and all around Manager), and
Don Coluzzi (Stage Manager and Set Designer). Woodside High School is the place to be for Drama because of this team
and ALL the volunteers who make it happen; from costumes and props, to concessions and tickets, to promoting and
stage crewing. For the Spring Musical I also want to call out all the student volunteers who helped back stage. What a
great team working in conjunction with parent volunteers to make seamless scene changes. That's part of the magic of
theater and the magic is flowing in the Woodside High School Performing Arts Center!
I can't forget one more important group of people; the ultimate drama supporters - the cast's PARENTS! Thank you all
for getting your cast members to rehearsal, even on the weekends, and supporting them in so many ways! It takes a village, as they say, and in any village, the parents are the glue! THANK YOU!
Now, before you think we're done, pull out your calendars. The Drama II/III Classes have their performance on Tuesday,
May 19th in the PAC at 7pm. They will be presenting two one-act comedies: "Sorry, Shakespeare" and "The Brothers
Grimm Spectaculathon." Should be a fun evening of theatre! This is an entirely student run production. Every aspect of
the production is directed, coordinated, choreographed, and performed by students. You won't want to miss this show.
Come out and support our students one more time! UP CURTAIN!

encouraged to car pool. This year families are to
meet up with their graduate in front of the I wing.
