After several weeks of campaigning, the grade 5 running teams held a debate on “election day”, Monday, October 26, 2015, as a final pitch for student votes. Each team put forth their policy proposals with conviction and fielded questions competently, demonstrating that debating has a good future at the school. Then the votes were cast and the winner was Team Aqua!!! The elections were coordinated by Social Studies teacher, Mr. Parthi Kandavel (see article on page 4). Parents & Trustees Meeting rescheduled to Nov 4th School Trustees will hold a meeting with the Grade 3 to 8 parents (and JK to Grade 2 parents who missed 1st meeting) on Wednesday, Nov. 4th, 2015 @ 6:30 PM. The meeting will take place in the gymnasium at 505 Ellesmere Road. Parents, please make every effort to attend this important and informative meeting. 22 From the Principal’s Desk Revathi Chennabathni Dear Parents I congratulate each and every one for taking heed of the parking regulations during drop off and pick up of your child(ren). Continue this trend, as this definitely aids in smooth traffic flow and helps bring a cheer to our volunteer parent ge those parents parking in the parking lot belonging to “Maritime Lobster” to refrain from doing so with immediate effect and oblige. We dedicate October month to Parents for all their support towards the food drive service project. We have sent one shipment of non-perishable food items to the North York Food Bank and working on sending the next soon. Effective November 2, 2015, all Sathya Sai School students are required to switch to winter uniforms. I request parents to help bundle up your child(ren) with necessary outer gear such as a warm coat, scarves, hats, gloves and boots from now on until the end of winter season. Unless the temperatures are below 15°C, all students go out during lunch recess to get fresh air. Please take a note of weather vagaries during this season. In case of inclement weather, outsourced school buses will not ply and chances are the school will remain closed under such conditions. Your child(ren)’s class teacher will notify you accordingly via telephone call or class blog. Also note that in case of siblings, only the oldest child(ren) will be notified. Please take a note of the upcoming events at the Sathya Sai School: Progress Reports and Science Fair projects will be sent home on November 2, 2015 Trustees’ and Parents’ Meeting on November 4, 2015 from 6:30 pm- 7:30 pm. Newsletter # 4 October 30 2015 4 4 Leadership & Government By Mr. Parthi Kandavel, Social Studies Teacher As you are aware, Canada recently underwent a large scale and competitive national election. Similarly, the Grade 5 class as part of their Government Unit in Social Studies had the opportunity to form political parties (Aqua, Green, Yellow, Purple) and compete in a school wide election. This 5 week long project saw the teams: 1. Create a policy platform of 3 big ideas. 2. Present their 3 big ideas in persuasive campaign literature in the form of TV & Radio commercials, political brochures & posters. 3. Perform public speeches to their fellow citizens. 4. Participate in a school wide debate amongst all 4 parties. The children greatly enjoyed this handson and interactive learning process, which provided them the chance to build their critical & strategic thinking, communication, and problem solving skills. Also, this project allowed the class to make real world connections, through values and ideas, with what they were witnessing in the Canadian national election. Election Day was on Friday, Oct. 23rd with grades 2 to 8, volunteers, and staff voting. A total of 111 ballots were cast with Team Aqua (Kritika, Branavkumar, Abhilash, Anishraam, Jaanani M.) coming out the winner. Also, interestingly enough, teams Yellow and Purple tied for 2nd place, with team Green achieving 3rd place. It was a pleasure conducting this project with the Grade 5 class, who I must commend for their enthusiasm and great interest in leadership and government. Newsletter # 4 October 30 2015 Grade 5 elections By Sai Sudhish Voora, Grade 8 Vote for green team, vote for team aqua, no team yellow, what are you talking about team purple for the win? On Friday Oct. 23, 2015 the grade 5 students had the grade 5 student election. The grade 5 students thought of three different policy’s for each group. There were four different teams and each team thought of three policy’s and started to campaign them in the school. They used their knowledge in politics to think of appealing policies and how to campaign them. Some policies they had were downloadable textbooks, track and field, glam it up and pets for each class. This election taught the grade 5 students and the whole school firsthand about politics, campaigning and democratic governments. The grade 5’s used different types of media to get notice about their policies. They made websites, brochures and posters. Also each of them created a campaign commercial. Each team also went to every class to inform the students about their policies. During the period of the grade 5 election campaign, the federal elections were going on. The grade 5’s used in their group’s campaign what they learned from watching the federal election. Finally the winner of the grade 5 student election is team Aqua and tied in second place is yellow team and purple. With a close follow in third place was team green. Each of the teams had different but strong arguments. They portrayed their arguments finally through a debate and a commercial on Friday the 23rd itself. After that the student and staff voted and finally the results as shown were revealed. Team Aqua won. 5 5 The Great Debate Newsletter # 4 October 30 2015 6 6 Winter Uniforms in Effect Beginning November 2nd Sathya Sai School Art Competition Now that the colder season is here, students are required to switch to the “Winter Uniform,” starting November 2nd, to ensure that they are warmly dressed to safeguard their health. Newsletter # 4 October 30 2015 7 7 Raptors Superfan: Changing Perceptions – Nav Bhatia On Tuesday, October 27, 2015, Sathya Sai School had the good fortune to be visited by Mr. Nav Bhatia, known throughout the GTA as the Raptors Superfan. Mr. Bhatia had come to donate a large number of basketballs and to speak to the students. He is a very large-hearted man who loves to share his passion for basketball, together with his passion for creating a better society. His story of coming to Canada was not an unfamiliar one to the students and adults present. Being a Sikh and wearing a turban and beard, jobs in his field (mechanical engineering) were hard to get and he had to face a lot of discrimination and name-calling. Finally, he became a car salesman in Rexdale and set a record of 127 car sales in his first three months and was called the Super Salesman. As time passed, he became an assistant manager and then manager of a dealership. Mr. Bhatia stressed to the students several times that his success was “all because of God’s grace and his parents’ blessings. We work hard, respect our parents, and are grateful to the Almighty.” …his success was “all because of God’s grace and his parents’ blessings. We work hard, respect our parents, and are grateful to the Almighty.” One day a number of years later, his cell phone was not working, so he went to the phone centre to get it fixed. As he entered, he heard one of the agents there saying to his wife on the phone, “My cab is here,” as he saw Mr. Bhatia enter. Mr. Bhatia thought, “Because I am a Sikh, he thought that I was driving a cab.” He was shocked by the stereotype, not because there is anything wrong in driving a cab – he stressed that he believes in the “dignity of labour, as long as you work hard and do not cheat anyone.” Rather, he was upset that the community leaders had not yet broken this stereotype. Mr. Bhatia continued his story, “On that day I thought, ‘We are being painted by the same brush. So I decided we might be wearing different colours, but deep inside we are all the same.’” He decided then to Newsletter # 4 October 30 2015 bring change to the perception of Sikhs in the mainstream. “On that day I thought, ‘We are being painted by the same brush. So I decided we might be wearing different colours, but deep inside we are all the same. All religions believe in loving each other.’” He decided then to bring change to the perception of Sikhs in the mainstream. Currently, Mr. Bhatia owns the #1 Hyundai dealership in Canada. This is important because it has given him “the opportunity and resources to reach out to the younger generation of this country.” And he does this through basketball. Having earned the title “Raptors Superfan” from the team, Mr. Bhatia buys thousands of tickets and distributes them to the underprivileged children, to children of all races and religions, so that they can integrate with each other at a young age and not have to face discrimination. He also gives away many Superfan basketballs to children so that they will be healthy and confident, and become responsible members of society. He tells children, “You have to stay fit, stay focused, live a clean life, and take the blessings of God every morning.” “You have to stay fit, stay focused, live a clean life, and take the blessings of God every morning.” Recently, Mr. Bhatia’s enthusiasm for basketball earned him a second name, the South Asian Ambassador for Basketball, given by the NBA. Canada has provided so many wonderful opportunities to people and Mr. Bhatia stated “If there is a heaven on this Earth, Canada is the heaven.” He told the students to “applaud your school for being #1 in the province and give your teachers a big hand – they don’t get enough credit.” He promised to come again to visit and ended with the wise words: “Keep fit and play lots of basketball!” Sathya Sai School is most grateful to Mr. Bhatia for his inspiring talk and the gift of basketballs. The game will certainly be much enjoyed when we move soon into the school’s permanent premises. 8 8 Newsletter # 4 October 30 2015 9 9 Chancellor Sri Sathya Sai Baba to Students Mould yourself into an excellent student Ethical behavior, virtuous reasoning adherence to truth, devotion, discipline, performing one’s duty meticulously; Education is that which teaches all these, And the student should strive to acquire such learning. Your life is a four-storey building. If the building has to be safe, the foundation should be very strong. Many people see the building, they see its full glory and beauty; it attracts people. But, the foundation has no beauty, and it does not attract anyone. Yet, the security of the building depends upon the invisible foundation. The dome or any part of the mansion has its own beauty. But, the foundation never exhibits pride that the building depends upon it. It is not moved by praise or blame, and maintains equanimity. It is very important to lay a strong foundation. The grade 4s and 5s went to different studios where they learned about their current units in science. Grade 4 learned about Awesome Earth. The grade 5s learned Fun with Chemistry. We had loads of fun. We learned energy is needed to live, and learned about hydrogen and animals. We also learned about water. My brave classmates got to carry a Sea urchin, Brittle star and a Sea star. I volunteered to pedal on the bike to create enough energy to heat up a piece of pizza. It turned out with the speed of my pedaling I had to pedal for 2 minutes straight at the same speed. One of my classmates did the pedaling like me but to dry clothes. He would have to keep pedaling for 26 hours. That is a lot of work. We learned ways to save water. We used clickers and we got to touch a Shark's Jaw bone. I want to tell you about my favorite part. My favorite part was the IMAX Theatre. For those of you who want to know, it is a dome shaped theatre. The projector covers walls and some parts of the dome's roof. Each speaker uses 1300 watts per second. We watched the movie Hubble. Hubble is a telescope meant to travel the universe. But a few years later it met some technical difficulties. So NASA sends a team of astronauts on this life changing, risky challenge. It is a life or death battle for Hubble. The astronauts must save Hubble or we Newsletter # 4 October 30 2015 might never be able to see what might happen in our universe. The movie was filled with thrill, chill, excitement and danger but with a very happy ending. That is what we did on our OSC field trip. It was fun. Thank you teachers for planning it. It was very fun. 15 15 Ontario Science Centre By: Nayana Anantharajah, Grade 5 The trip to the Ontario Science Centre was a great experience. The most remarkable part of the trip was the workshop. We saw and tried many impressive and interesting experiments. As soon as we walked into the workshop, we greeted the instructor, Ms. Andrea, and then we started the workshop. Ms. Andrea then placed three lemons on the table. She injected one of the lemons with a mixture of pink lemonade and hydrogen peroxide. She moved the lemons around rapidly and asked us to choose the lemon that was injected. When we cut open all the lemons, we discovered that none of them were pink inside! This is because the mixture injected will turn clear when combined with acid. For another experiment, Ms. Andrea mixed hydrogen peroxide, dishwashing soap, yeast, and food colouring to make an interesting substance that started rising rapidly out of the tube in the form of foam! This foam is nicknamed “Elephant’s toothpaste”! Ms. Andrea took out an ordinary bucket filled with liquid nitrogen, then took out a spoon and scooped up some nitrogen. The liquid nitrogen dropped to the floor and briskly turned into gas. We all gasped in amazement! If you put your hand in liquid nitrogen, it will freeze and crack. Our instructor demonstrated this using a glove. A glove is gentle and smooth like skin. When she put the glove in nitrogen, it reacted the same way skin would. The glove was frozen and when she tapped the frozen glove, it cracked! Ms. Andrea then dipped a balloon into the nitrogen and it shrunk slowly. But when she took the balloon out of the nitrogen, it started expanding rapidly. Next, she put a balloon filed with hydrogen into the nitrogen. It shrunk quickly, but expanded very slowly when it was pulled out. For the next experiment, Ms. Andrea took three cups, but only filled one with water. She moved the cups around and asked us to pick the one with the water. We soon discovered that none of the cups had water in them! Ms. Andrea had put a special powder in the cup before she poured the water. As she moved the cups around, the water and powder had mixed together and hardened into a clear solid! Newsletter # 4 October 30 2015 For the final experiment, Ms. Andrea had a balloon that was filled with helium and another balloon that was filled with hydrogen. She took out a lighter and lit the helium balloon. It made a loud noise! Then she lit the balloon with hydrogen. It made an extremely loud noise and we saw a huge flame arise! We were very surprised! The workshop was so interesting and exciting! I learned so much about matter and chemistry from these experiments! I really enjoyed this trip! 16 16 Our Trip to the Ontario Science Centre By: Lishita Chen, Grade 5 humid in there, as there were tropical pants, trees, a waterfall, and a pond with a bridge across it! On Monday, October 26, our class, along with the grade four class, went to the Ontario Science Centre. In the morning, we went for a workshop. We did lots of cool experiments on states of matter in the workshop with our guide, Ms. Andrea. I got to be Ms. Andrea’s assistant for one of the experiments, which was very exciting! Our last activity at the Science Centre was to watch an IMAX film while sitting in slanted seats that faced a dome-shaped screen. The movie was called “Hubble”. It was about a telescope called Hubble that was launched into space many years back and how it sends pictures of space back to Earth! The movie showed us how astronauts had been sent into space to repair Hubble several times. On this field trip I learned many new things: helium is a stable gas, but hydrogen is unstable; dish detergent added to hydrogen peroxide makes bubbles and foam; the meaning of sublimation; how to make paper; and much more! I also learned new things about the universe. I learned about star nurseries, other galaxies, Hubble, and how astronauts train to and eventually fix things in space! I learned so many new things on this trip and had a lot of fun doing it! I hope to go there again soon! In the afternoon, we got to explore the exhibits! My group and I first went to the experiment station. At the entrance, there was a shaft of air, along with papers to fold into certain shapes to put into the air shaft. We folded the paper and put them into the shaft. The paper went up the shaft and then floated down on us! This was a lot of fun. In this experiment station, there were also other experiments, like optical illusions, inclined plane experiments, as well as crafts. The next station we visited was about the human body. This station included activities such as rock climbing, dancing, and places where you could learn more about how the human body works. In the third station, we learned about rocks, minerals, and fabric. In this station, we got to make our own handmade paper with the help of a guide! We were allowed to take the paper we made home, along with instructions on how to make it at home! Finally, we visited a biology station where there was an indoor rainforest! It was extremely hot and Newsletter # 4 October 30 2015 17 17 Grades 6, 7, 8: Bringing Halloween Cheer to Seniors Newsletter # 4 October 30 2015 18 18 Newsletter # 4 October 30 2015 19 19 Halloween Parade By: Mr. Vaughn Mac Donald, French Teacher This year’s Halloween parade was coordinated by Mr. Gandhi with the stage set up in the middle of the gym. Meera Bungaroo and Jatan Jeyachandren emceed the event. They did a great job interviewing each costumed student and told jokes between each grade’s presentation. They also gave safety rules about trick or treating. Great job Meera and Jatan! Grade six to grade one walked the catwalk and displayed their costumes starting with the grade sixes. There were cats, secret agents, superheroes, Harry Potter, ninjas, Things, a nature girl, soccer players, princesses, a police officer, a peacock, Mother Nature, Tinkerbell, a fireman, a disco diva, and many others. A special round of applause for those students who made homemade costumes out of household recycled materials.
