Vormittag
: ABFAHRT in Eichstätt
Treffpunkt am Willibald-Gymnasium um 06:00 Uhr. Bitte max. 1 Gepäckstück (<23 kg) und ein Handgepäck (<6kg)
mitnehmen. Transport zum Flughafen München über die Firma Kammerbauer, welche für den Amerikaustausch einen
Spezialpreis gemacht hat der günstiger als der Flughafenexpress ab Ingolstadt war. An dieser Stelle bereits ein
Dankeschön.
Mittags
: DIREKTFLUG von München nach Washington
Mit der United Airline UA 903 (Airbus 777) geht es um 11:40 Uhr von München (Terminal 2) über den Teich an die
amerikanische Ostküste, wo wir dann in Washington D.C. am Dulles International Airport um 14:45 Uhr Ortszeit landen
werden (Flugzeit: ungefähr 9 Stunden ohne Zwischenstopp). Von dort Transport mit Super Shuttle (oder alternativ
öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln) zum Hostelling International Washington D.C., dem amerikanischen Pendant der deutschen
Jugendherbergen.

: ABENDSPAZIERGANG durch Chinatown
Abhängig von unserer körperlichen Verfassung und dem Jetlag können wir heute Abend noch einen kleinen
Abendspaziergang durch das benachbarte Chinatown machen und werden dort in einem chinesischen Restaurant das
weitere Programm der kommenden Tage zu besprechen.
Chinatown in Washington, D.C. is a small, historic neighborhood east of downtown, in the present day consisting of about 20 of ethnic
Chinese and other Asian restaurants and small businesses along H and I Streets between 5th and 8th Streets, Northwest. It is known
for its annual Chinese New Year festival and parade and the Friendship Arch, a Chinese gate built over H Street at 7th Street. The
Chinatown area was formerly populated by German immigrants. Chinese immigrants began to populate the area in the 1930s, having
been displaced from Washington's original Chinatown along Pennsylvania Avenue by the development of the Federal Triangle
government office complex. Like other Washington neighborhoods, Chinatown declined sharply after the 1968 riots. Ethnic Chinese
residents, as well as many others, left for suburban areas. It is only in recent years after gentrification efforts have started in this area
that some of the Chinese have come back to Chinatown.

2.Tag (Mittwoch): „U.S. Histories: Memorials and Museums“
“Welcome to the front yard of America. City planner Pierre L’Enfant conceived
the Mall as an educational, natural and artistic recourse for both residents and
tourists. The National Mall is a 400ft-wide green expanse stretching 3 miles
from Potomac in the west to Capitol Hill in the east. Lined with gravel paths
and bordered by tree-shaded avenues the Mall is fringed by museums and
dotted with monuments.”

: HISTORISCHER SPAZIERGANG durch die National Mall
Da der Jetlag uns nur eine kurze Nacht gönnen wird, werden wir unser heutiges Programm bereits sehr früh beginnen.
Mit der Metro geht es nach dem Frühstück im HI zur National Mall, wo wir auf einem kleinen Rundgang buchstäblich auf
den Spuren amerikanischer Geschichte wandeln können. Damit die Vergangenheit an den einzelnen Monuments und
Memorials jedoch wirklich lebendig werden kann, sind wir auf Eure Hilfe angewiesen: In kurzen englischen
Infopräsentationen stellen einzelne Schüler die verschiedenen Orte auf unserer Tour vor (u.a. Washington Monument,
Thomas Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, National World War II Memorial,
Korean War Veterans Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial). Am Ende unseres Rundgangs werden wir mit dem wohl
besten und eklusivsten Blick auf die Mall vom Obelisken des Washington Memorials unsere kleine historische Zeitreise
beenden.
The national monuments on the Mall are America’s most treasured history lesson, the physical embodiment of everything patriotic and
iconic about the USA. From giggling schoolchildren to grandparents celebrating wedding anniversaries, millions make the pilgrimage to
these massive mounds of marble each year. They come to comprehend the meaning behind the land of the free and the home of the
brave and all the sacrifices the fight for the American idea of democracy entailed. They come to pay tribute to the country’s founding
fathers, fallen heroes and most influential statesmen. They come to marvel at the simple beauty of the monuments set against a sublime
spring backdrop of flowering pink cherry trees, to smile at their sparkling mirror-image in the larger-than-life Reflecting Pool, to search
for names of lost relatives etched into the sobering jet-black marble walls at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, etc. Overkill, critics claim:
the excess of monuments detracts from the significance of any one structure. But no matter what the pundits say, no one can deny that
all the marble, columns, fountains and lawns make the western half of the National Mall completely breathtaking and awe-inspiring.

: MUSEUMSBESUCH im National Museum of American History
Nach den Monuments und Memorials darf natürlich ein Besuch in dem neurenoviertem National Museum of American
History der weltbekannten Smithsonian National Museums Kette nicht fehlen. Allein in diesem Museum könnten wir drei
Tage verbringen, deshalb empfehle ich Euch dringend Euren Besuch bereits von zuhause aus online zu planen. Auf der
Homepage des Museums (http://americanhistory.si.edu) findet Ihr dazu die nötigen Informationen. Für die Mittagspause
lädt die gemütliche und gar nicht so teure Cafeteria des Museums ein.
In 2006 the National Museum of American History closed for a two-year renovation, to reopen in summer 2008, with the space
reimagined in a still modern but brighter and airier design with a skylight cutting through the building, fairly open layout, and better
internal access among the floors. Traditionally the regular gallery displays on the first floor have showcased the technological
advancement and the economic, industrial, and agricultural prowess that brought the US to its position of global power. I highly
recommend that you visit the exhibitions “Science in American Life” and “America on the Move”. No level of the museum has benefited
more from the renovation than the second floor, where many of the museum’s social and political exhibits are displayed. The museum’s
key attractions, however, are to be found on the third floor. Don’t miss the chance to see the brandnew exhibit “The Price of Freedom:
Americans at War”. And the museum’s key attraction, the faded and battered red, white, and blue flag that inspired the writing of the US
national anthem: The Star-Spangled Banner, which survived the British bombing of Baltimore harbour during the War of 1812.

: AUSFLUG nach Georgetown
Nach soviel Geschichte habt Ihr Euch eine kleine Pause verdient. Mit der Metro (und dem Shuttlebus) fahren wir nach
Georgetown, einer der ältesten und teuersten Wohngegenden Washingtons. Nach einem kurzem Spaziergang entlang
des C&O Canals (C&O Canal National Historic Park) durch den Campus der Georgetown University ins historische
Georgetown habt Ihr die Möglichkeit, Washingtons angesagtesten Stadtteil eigenständig zu erkunden. Zum Abendessen
treffen wir uns dann wieder gemeinsam. Rückkehr ins Quartier als Gruppe.
Georgetown is Washington’s cheerleader. Bubbly, beautiful, brainy and only a little bit mean (when it comes to your wallet, that is), the
neighbourhood is synonymous with elite education, high-dollar real estate, sublime shopping and lots and lots of old money. George
Town University, a Jesuit school known for churning out future basketball players, is here. And many of Washington’s blue-blood gentry.
Isolated both geographically and historically, Georgetown has long maintained a unique identity in DC. Historic Georgetown,
Washington’s most popular shopping strip, offers something for everyone in the pretty shop fronts of brick buildings lining the cobbled
streets. Alternatively you can also stop by in the elegantly designed upscale Georgetown Park Mall.

3. Tag (Donnerstag): „U.S. Politics: From the Capitol to the White House”
„Nach der Mall ist die Pennsylvania Avenue sicher die bekannteste Straße Washingtons. Auf einer Länge von 11 km ist sie die direkte
Verbindung zwischen den drei wichtigsten Regierungsgebäuden der USA: Dem Weißen Haus (Sitz des US-Präsidenten), dem Kapitol
(Sitz der beiden Kammern des Parlaments) und dem Supreme Court (Sitz des Obersten Gerichtshofs). Zwischen diesen Symbolen der
Verfassungsgewalten (Exekutive, Legislative und Judikative) stehen entlang der Pennsylvania Avenue zahlreiche weitere
Regierungsgebäude“
Vormittag
: EXKURSION durch das politische Washington
Auch heute müssen wir zum Frühstück im HI wieder zeitig aufstehen, denn wir wollen noch vor den anderen Touristen
am Morgen das Capitol besuchen. Auf einer Führung habt Ihr die Möglichkeit, die Rotunda, die Statuary Hall und die Old
Supreme Court Chamber zu besichtigen. Auch heute werden einzelne Schüler die Exkursionsroute mit Kurzreferaten zu
den wichtigsten (politischen) Einrichtungen unterstützen (Capitol, Supreme Court, White House, Federal Bureau of
Investigation, Library of Congress, etc.). Leider war es aufgrund verstärkter Sicherheitsbestimmungen nicht möglich, eine
Führung durch das White House zu bekommen, so dass die Tour im Visitors Center vor dem Weißen Haus enden wird.
Mittag/Nachmittag
: MUSEUMSWELTEN entlang der Mall
Nach einem schnellen Hotdog vor dem Weißen Haus laufen wir gemeinsam zur Mall, wo wir das Smithsonian Visitors
Center im Smithsonian Castle besuchen werden. Hier könnt Ihr Euch über die einzelnen Washingtoner Smithsonian
Museen im Detail informieren. Um Euch die Möglichkeit zu geben, möglichst individuell aus dem musealen Angebot
entlang der National Mall auszuwählen werden wir uns für den Nachmittag in Kleingruppen aufteilen. Natürlich könnt Ihr
mehr als nur ein Museum besuchen. Alternativprogramme außerhalb der Mall (wie z.B. das International Spy Museum,
das Smithsonian American Art Museum/National Portrait Gallery, etc.) müssen jedoch vorher mit mir abgesprochen
werden). Um den Nachmittag optimal zu nutzen solltet Ihr Euch bereits in Deutschland über die Homepages der
einzelnen Museen informieren.
National Air and Space Museum: Washingtonians never tore of this DC favourite, no matter how many times they drag their visiting
friends and relatives through its giant plate-glass doors. With real nuclear missles, the Apollo 11 command module and an actual chunk
of the lunar rock, who could resist? Touching the moon should be your first mission: line up and rub your fingers across the well-worn
surface. Be sure to make a wish. Afterwards there are 23 different galleries presenting the history of aviation and space exploration via

National Museum of Natural History: Welcoming more than 9 million guests each year, this is one of the world’s most visited
museums – and it just keeps getting better with new exhibits added in the last years. The exhibits at this museum get up in your face;
they are so interactive visitors actually feel the rainstorm on the savannah and see what the hunting jaguar is stalking. Check out

National Museum of the American Indian: The Smithsonian’s latest addition (opened in September 2004) tells the story of the
American Indian in a format not often employed by mainstream museums. It uses native communities’ authentic voices and own
interpretations of events to debunk stereotypes. Planned in the mid-1990s, the museum took nine years to curate and makes an effort to
recognize and honor the many different Native American tribes who lived on American soil before the White man showed up. For further

National Gallery of Art: Affiliated with, but not part of the Smithonian, the National Gallery needs two buildings (connected by an
underground tunnel) to house its massive collections of painting, sculpture and decorative art from the Middle Ages to the present. The
original neoclassical building, known as the West Building, exhibits primarily European works from the Middle Ages to the early 20th
century. The Angular East Bulding, designed by IM Pei, is where you’ll find the Calder mobile along with other abstract and modern
works. If you are interested in non-European art, stop by in the National Museum of African Art as well. For futher reference visit

Abend
: EINKAUFSWELTEN in der Union Station
Amerika ist nicht zuletzt bekannt für seine Shopping Malls. Am heutigen Abend habt Ihr die Möglichkeit eines der
schönsten und exklusivsten amerikanischen Malls zu besuchen. Dazu fahren wir mit der Metro von der National Mall zur
Union Station, einem der großen innerstädtischen Entwicklungsprojekte der Stadt. Parallelen zu dem von Euch in Berlin
besuchten Berliner Hauptbahnhof sollten Euch sofort auffallen. Unser Abendessen nehmen wir dann auch ganz
amerikanisch im Food Court der Union Station ein. Rückfahrt dann wieder gemeinsam ins Quartier.
Unlike any shopping experience in the country, except perhaps Las Vegas, this larger-than-life 1907 beaux-arts creation is also
Washington’s most impressive gateway. The depot was beautifully restored in 1988 and transformed into a contemporary city center
and transit hub. Besides Amtrak connections to destinations throughout the East, it has a cinema, food court (one of the best in the city!)
and 200,000 sq ft of shops.

4. Tag (Freitag): Weiterreise nach Oklahoma
Vormittag
: BESUCH des United States Holocaust Museum
Da unser Weiterflug nach Oklahoma City erst am Nachmittag ist, hoffe ich, dass uns noch genug Zeit bleibt, um am
Morgen das United States Holocaust Museum zu besuchen. Da wir bis spätestens 11:00 Uhr auschecken müssen,
werden wir unser Reisegepäck daher nach dem Frühstück im Gepäckraum des HI deponieren.
The somber, soaring Holocaust Museum is unlike any other DC museum. In remembering the millions murdered by the Nazis, it is
brutal, direct and impassioned. Its exhibits leave many visitors in tears and few unmoved. When designing the Museum building,
architect James Ingo Freed created an architectural relationship between the building and the exhibitions inside. The result is not a
neutral shell. Instead, the architecture refers to the history the Museum addresses, with numerous architectural allusions to the
Holocaust. Visitors are able to form their own interpretations of these subtle metaphors of history, often a catalyst for thought and
introspection. Within the Museum, there are many things to see and do. The museum building is organized by the principles it was built
to support: education and remembrance. Museum exhibitions, the foundation of our educational presentations, exist on four floors.
Many visitors begin with the Permanent Exhibition, which can take up to several hours to tour. Smaller special exhibitions take less time
to view and provide microcosmic stories within the greater history. Another mission of the Museum building is to serve as a memorial to
the victims. Visitors are invited to spend time reflecting in the Hall of Remembrance, on the lower level on the south side of the building.
Nachmittag/Abend
: WEITERFLUG nach Oklahoma City
Mit der United Airline UA 5349 verlassen wir um 17:20 Uhr Washington und die Ostküste, um unsere Reise ins das Herz
Amerikas, den Great Plains Staat Oklahoma, fortzusetzen. Laut Flugplan landen wir um 1941 am Will Rogers World
Airport in Oklahoma City, wo wir von Frau Gerstenlauer-Hill und Euren amerikanischen Austauschpartnern und
Gasteltern abgeholt werden kann. Damit geht dann Euer amerikanisches Abenteuer in Edmond, Oklahoma richtig los.
Und keine Sorge: Wenn Ihr im ersten Moment nicht wisst, was Ihr sagen sollt, dann erzählt einfach von unserem Kurztrip
nach Washington. Ihr müsstet eigentlich genug gesehen und damit auch genug zu erzählen haben.

5. Tag (Samstag): Gemeinsamer Ausflug nach Oklahoma City
Nachmittag : GEMEINSAMER AUSFLUG nach Oklahoma City
Um Euch, Euren Austauschpartnern, Gastfamilien und nicht zuletzt auch Frau Gerstenlauer Hill, Frau Holsaeter und mir
die Möglichkeit zu geben, die Gruppe näher kennenzulernen, hat Frau Gerstenlauer-Hill für den heutigen Tag einen
gemeinsamen Ausflug nach Oklahoma City organisiert. Auf unserem Stadtrundgang durch Oklahoma City werden neben
der berühmten Cowboy Hall of Fame, durch das wir eine Führung bekommen, auch das Oklahoma City Memorial und
Museum besuchen, das im Gedenken des Bombenattentats auf das Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building im Jahr 1995
gebaut worden ist.
Abendessen : GEMEINSAMES ABENDESSEN im Abuelo’s in Oklahoma City
Frau Gerstenlauer-Hill hat extra für Euch die Speisekarte des Abuelo’s gescannt und mir geschickt, damit Ihr schon mal
einen Einblick bekommt, was man bei einem amerikanischen (bzw. in diesem Fall eher mexikanischen) Dinner so alles
bestellen kann. Enjoy your meal!

6./7. Tag (Sonntag/Montag): Wochenende in den Gastfamilien
Da am Montag Labour Day und damit Feiertag ist, habt Ihr die Möglichkeit mit Euren Gastfamilien ein verlängertes
Wochenende zu verbringen, bevor wir uns dann wieder am Dienstag in der Schule treffen. Bitte informiert Euch bereits
im Vorfeld von Deutschland aus über die entsprechenden Homepages (bzw. Eure Austauschpartner) über Eure
Gastschule (Kleidungsordnung, Unterrichtszeiten, zusätzliche Kurse, Sportangebote, etc.).
Edmond North High School became a four year high school on May 2, 1993. The rapid growth of the community in the early and mid
90's prompted the decision to increase the number of high schools in the district. This allowed for expansion of the school's main
building as well as the size and variety of available classes. The initial graduating class was formed in 1994, the same year they began
to accept freshman. This was also the first year they hosted summer school. Edmond Memorial had previously been host, and with a
second high school available, a rotation began between the two high schools and would later include Edmond Santa Fe High School
which formed in 1997. Community expansion continued through the 90's and into the 2000s, prompting Edmond North to further expand
the main building. Additional portable classrooms were added, more parking became available, and a track, full size football field and
tennis courts were also added. During the 2007-08 school year, Edmond North School was recognized with the Blue Ribbon School
Award of Excellence by the United States Department of Education, the highest award an American school can receive
Edmond Memorial High School is a public secondary school located in Edmond, Oklahoma. Its school colors are maroon and gray,
and its mascot is the bulldog. At the 2007-2008 school year, the school had an enrollment of 2,016 students and 90 classroom teachers.
The graduation rate for the class of 2007 was 99.6%.The school was originally named Edmond High School because it was the only
secondary school within the city limits. The first class graduated in 1922, and consisted of 24 students. As Edmond grew, the school
changed location several times, moving to its current location on 15th Street in the mid 1960's. The current building was originally
shaped like an "E" but was distorted when new additions were added. In 1975, the name of the school was changed to Edmond
Memorial High School to honor six alumni who were killed while serving in Vietnam: Floyd Frazier, Jr., Allen Garrett, James Johnson,
James Leonard, Danny Shores, and John Wilson. Because of its rapidly increasing size, the school split into three rival schools in 1994.
The other two schools are Edmond North High School and Edmond Santa Fe High School. In the past decade, Memorial has
undergone a wave of new construction projects, including an expanded library, new parking lots, a new football locker room/ pom and
cheer practice facility, and a new freshmen academy. The auditorium is currently being renovated, with a scheduled completion date in
March. Memorial is consistently recognized as one of the top public high schools in Oklahoma. It received the Department of Education
Blue Ribbon School Award of Excellence in 2001-2002 school year, one of the highest honors an American high school can achieve. In
2008 Edmond Memorial was named the Siemens Foundation award winner for the state of Oklahoma for its consistently high Advanced
Placement (AP) test scores in science, math and technology. The senior class of 2007 received more than $11 million in scholarship
offers, and 60% of the class took AP classes..
8. Tag (Dienstag): Schulbesuch und Programm in Edmond
Heute geht es endlich los und Ihr werdet den ersten Tag an Eurer Gastschule verbringen. Wir treffen uns an den
entsprechenden Schulen morgens um 07:55 Uhr am Visitor Center. Bitte lasst Euch von Euren Gastschülern zeigen, wo
das ist. Nach der Einschreibung und einer kurzen Schulhausführung werden uns noch die beiden Direktoren kurz
begrüßen und dann geht es nach dem Tutorial mit in den Unterricht. Bitte begleitet in der ersten Woche Eure
Austauschschüler in ihren Unterrichtsstunde. Aber der zweiten Woche könnt Ihr Euch einen eigenen Stundenplan
entwerfen. Diese Pläne müssen jedoch sowohl mit mir als auch den Student Counselors der entsprechenden
Gastschulen abgesprochen werden. Bei Fragen findet Ihr mich und Frau Ganser jeweils in dem Media Center/Library
Eurer Schule von 07:30 Uhr bis 16:00 Uhr. Solltet Ihr uns dort nicht antreffen, fragt bitte bei den Bibliothekarinnen nach
oder alternativ bei Frau Gerstenlauer-Hill und Frau Holsaeter.
Neben dem Unterricht haben wir zusammen mit Frau Gerstenlauer-Hill und Frau Holsaeter natürlich auch für die Zeit in
Edmond für Euch ein entsprechendes Programm geplant. Um das amerikanische High School Leben wirklich in allen
Facetten erleben zu können, sollt Ihr in den kommenden drei Wochen nicht nur aktiv am Unterricht teilnehmen (Referate,
Präsentationen, etc.), sondern auch an den zahlreiche Nachmittagsveranstaltungen der Schule teilhaben (z.B.
Wahlkurse, Sportturniere, Konzerte, Bowling etc.). Während Ihr die Wochenenden überwiegend in den Gastfamilien
verbringen werdet, haben wir unter der Woche in regelmäßigen Abständen gemeinsame Veranstaltungen geplant, wie
zum Beispiel Kinobesuche, gemeinsames Bowling, Pizzaessen, sowie den Besuch eines Basketball Spiels der
Redhawks, einen Ausflug in den Zoo von Oklahoma City und den Andy Alligator Fun Park und einen Ausflug zur State
Fair (http://www.okstatefair.com). Besonders freuen wir uns über das Angebot der Familie Wright, die für den letzten
Abend zu einer Farewell Party eingeladen hat und welchen wir als Deutschen Abend entsprechend gestalten wollen.
Bitte bedenkt dabei, dass wir an diesem Abend uns nicht nur von den Gastfamilien verabschieden, sondern Ihnen auch
für Ihre Gastfreundlichkeit danken wollen. Es versteht sich daher von selbst, dass wir den Abend entsprechend mit
Programm füllen werden und bereits schon sehr bald beginnen werden, die einzelnen Beiträge zu planen und zu proben.
