Phuket’s newest hotel is also one of its loveliest: 83 generous Thai-style wooden
villas, each with its private pool, deck and extravagantly large daybeds. The minibar
is stocked with an interesting choice of wine and champagne and the rooms all have
WiFi, espresso machine and iPod. Opened last October, the holiday complex is in the
north of Phuket on Mai Kao beach, which stretches for kilometres and is virtually empty. It boasts an attractive spa, a grill-restaurant by the pool and a romantic Thai-Mediterranean restaurant surrounded by lush vegetation on the edge of a lagoon.
Tips Golfers can play on the two 18-hole courses at the Blue Canyon Country Club,
www.bluecanyonclub.com. There is Turtle Village right next to the hotel for shopping
and there are a number of unspoilt fishing villages on the other side of Sarasin Bridge.

Its design is so unusual you just have to like this hotel. It’s situated on the site of an
old tin mine and many details of its architecture and furnishings reflect this legacy:
wooden beams, metal fittings, industrial look and a variety of machinery large and
small. But it has far more to offer: a very professional cookery school, three saltwater
pools, a beach club, various restaurants and 227 rooms and suites of different sizes.
Tips Right next door to the hotel, Nai Yang village has a market, small restaurants
and nice shops selling arts and crafts. The hotel organises diving trips, nature reserve
excursions and visits to a nearby rubber plantation.

It would be hard to find greater luxury anywhere on Phuket. The Trisara has
39 240-square-metre villas with private pools and sea views, as well as a number of

picturesque Naithon Beach and has library, spa and an excellent Thai restaurant with

Tips Very close by is the sleepy coastal village of Naithon with little shops and simple
fish restaurants: the Naithon Seafood right on the beach is a good and cheap place to

beautiful hotels: luxurious, in an unbeatable location and with impeccable service. Even the 40 “standard” pavilions with terrace and ocean view are sensational, but
guests looking to really treat themselves should opt for one of the 30 vast villas with
large private pool, various decks and personal staff. The hotel stands on the crescent of
Pansea Beach and has one of the most spectacular swimming pools on Phuket. There
is also an unpretentious beach restaurant and the chic The Terrace with outstanding
Thai cuisine.
Tips Why would you ever want to leave paradise? At the very most to take one of the
hotel’s own yachts on a cruise around Phang Nga Bay. The most attractive of them is
the Maha Bhetra and resembles a floating Aman suite.

This is the place to come for lovers of a de luxe Robinson Crusoe style. A good year
old, the hotel is situated on Yao Noi Island in spectacular Phang Nga Bay and has 56 villas of at least 150 square metres with floors in tropical hardwood, open-air bathrooms,
massive wooden beds with airy mosquito nets and generous decks and pools. The view
of the imposing Koh Hong limestone rocks that thrust up from the waves like jagged
boulders is difficult to beat.
Tips A good spot to eat is the Good View Restaurant in the south of the island, shopping can be done at the market in the “city”. A longboat tour through the island world
makes an interesting excursion.

Strand für wenig Geld massieren zu lassen. Zu den Highlights zählt das romantische Beach-Restaurant mit hervorragender Fischküche.
Tipps Vom Chedi aus kann man nach Surin spazieren, einem Badeort mit guter Infrastruktur. Zum Essen geht man ins Taste (www.tastesurinbeach.com) und

Sharing magnificent Pansea Bay with the Amanpuri, the 108
ocean-view Chedi villas and cottages are scattered along the slope
between towering coconut palms. Although not quite as luxurious
as its neighbour, the complex has a lot of flair and its guest accommodations are furnished in attractive contemporary Thai style.
You can choose between the hotel spa and getting your massage down on the beach for
a small fee. Among the Chedi’s highlights is its romantic beach restaurant with excellent fish dishes.
Tips It’s not far to walk from Chedi to Surin, a beach resort with good infrastructure. For a meal, try the Taste (www.tastesurinbeach.com) and for shopping there’s the

8 Manathai

Dieses Hotel liegt genau neben dem Twinpalms und bietet das absolute Kontrast­
programm: Es ist charmant, vielleicht ein wenig überladen, aber sehr geschmackvoll und liebevoll gestaltet. Die 52 Zimmer und Suiten verteilen sich auf einen
­alten und einen neuen Teil, wobei es dabei nur um das Styling geht. Der «alte» Flügel ist eher thailändisch mit viel Seide und Holz, der neue etwas westlicher mit
pastellfarbenen Wänden. Es gibt zwei kleine Pools, einen netten Beach Club und
ein intimes Restaurant mit guter Thai-Küche.
Tipps Zum Manathai gehört das Cabaret-Theater Playhouse in Patong, in
dem jeden Abend eine Ladyboy-Show über die Bühne geht. Im dazugehörenden
­Theaterrestaurant befindet sich auch eine Kochschule. Beides: www.phuketplayhouse.com.
Located right next door to the Twinpalms, this hotel offers the very
opposite: it is charming, maybe a little cluttered but very tasteful
and lovingly appointed. Its 52 rooms and suites are housed in an
old and a new section, although this distinction refers only to the
style. The “old” wing is more Thai with lots of silk and wood, while
the “new” part is more Western with pastel walls. There are two small pools, a neat
beach club and an intimate restaurant serving good Thai food.
Tips The Manathai also owns the Playhouse cabaret theatre in Patong, which stages
a ladyboy show every evening. The theatre’s own restaurant also runs a cookery school.

Das vier Jahre alte The Racha hat mit seinen 70 Villen, 4 Restaurants, 2 Pools und

Gleich neben dem Racha bietet ein kleines Backpacker-Hotel Bob-Marley-Musik
und gute Thai-Küche. Das Racha-Boot fährt mehrmals täglich nach Chalong Bay
auf Phuket. Dort gibt es Läden, Restaurants, Schneider und Massagesalons.
Four years old, The Racha occupies practically the entire 2 to 3
kilo­metres of this tiny islet with its 70 villas, 4 restaurants, 2 pools
and spa. It has established a new style for Phuket with its minimalist Zen look in brilliant white. The whole ­resort has been designed
to be environmentally friendly and provides a number of nice extras like iPods in all the rooms and underwater music in the pools.
Tips Pay a visit to Siam Bay with its gorgeous beach and agreeable beach restaurant.
The little backpacker’s hotel right beside The Racha serves up Bob Marley music and
good Thai meals. The Racha’s boat shuttles several times a day across to Chalong Bay
on Phuket, where there are shops, restaurants, tailors and massage salons.
10 Twinpalms

Designfans werden sich hier wohl fühlen, denn das drei Jahre

Hinter der offenen Lobby mit schwarzem Steinboden ist der

sind minimalistisch, aber komfortabel und in kühler Schwarzweissoptik gehalten, für höhere Ansprüche gibt es 21 zum Teil zweistöckige «Residences». Zum schick gestalteten Beach Club am Surin-Strand geht man keine
fünf Minuten, wer möchte, kann dort das Nachtleben Surins ­geniessen.
Tipps Der hauseigene Sunday Brunch ist auf der ganzen Insel bekannt, ebenso

Design fans will feel at home here as this three-year-old hotel is cool, hyperstylish
and very much in tune with the zeitgeist. Behind the open lobby floored in black stone
can be seen the pool and its lunch bar. The 97 rooms with open-air baths are minimalist but comfortable and decorated in cool black and white. For the more demanding,
there are also 21 residences, some of them with two floors. It’s not even five minutes’
walk to the fashionably decorated Beach Club on Surin Beach, where anyone interested can sample what Surin has to offer in the way of nightlife.
