Das Motto der diesjährigen Berlin Music Week könnte nicht passender sein, denn Berlin ist eine Stadt, in der die Musik nicht nur
freigesetzt, sondern geradezu entfesselt ist. The motto of this year’s Berlin Music Week couldn’t be more fitting, because Berlin is a
city where music isn’t just released, it’s set free.
Das mag in gewissen Teilen der Stadt Dauerzustand sein, aber wer im letzten Jahr gesehen hat, wie junge Touristen aus Boston
begeistert Tickets für ein Festival kaufen,
das mit Newcomern wirbt, die so neu sind,
dass sie gerade mal eine eigene Website haben, wer gesehen hat wie gut abgehangene
Musikjournalisten plötzlich mit leuchtenden
Augen vor einem dieser frischen Künstler
stehen, wer sich in diesen Flow musikhungriger Menschen zwischen Friedrichshain,
Kreuzberg bis hin nach Tempelhof geworfen hat, wer wieder einmal gespürt hat, dass
diese Stadt wie ein grandioser, wilder, nie
endender Song ist, der wusste am Ende: In
der Berlin Music Week geht noch ein wenig mehr. Das wird auch in diesem Jahr so
sein. Und getoppt. Versprochen! That has

realization once again that this city is like a
wild, fantastic, never-ending song. Then you
know Berlin Music Week has room to be even
better. And it will this year too. Beyond your

„Ich freue mich am meisten auf Seinabo Sey. Ich habe sie
Anfang des Jahres in Oslo beim By:Larm Festival durch
Zufall gesehen, weil eine Kollegin aus UK mich zu dem
Konzert geschleppt hat. Auf der Bühne dort standen drei
blässliche Schweden und ich dachte nur: ‚Oh nein, nicht
noch so ein Act, der elektronischen Befindlichkeitspop mit
melancholisch-gehauchtem Gesang macht!‘ Dann kam Seinabo Sey auf die Bühne und man dachte, sie hätte sich auf
die falsche Bühne verlaufen, da sie das komplette Gegenteil
ihrer Backup Band war: Stark, groß, wunderschön und eine
Präsenz auf der Bühne, wie man sie selten erlebt. Dort war ein
Superstar in the making und ich war vom ersten Moment an

Standing on stage were three, pale Swedes and I just thought
‚Oh no, not another one of these electro-sensitive pop acts with
with breathy, melancholy vocals!‘ Then Seinabo Sey came on
and it looked like she had just wandered onto the wrong set.
Because she looked like the complete opposite of her backup
band: big, strong, gorgeous and with a stage presence that is
really quite rare. It was a superstar in the making and I was
in love from the first moment.”

Eigentlich habe ich mir in diesem Jahr vorgenommen, mich treiben zu lassen,
statt mit einem vollgekritzelten Timetable von einer Show zur nächsten zu
hetzen. Andererseits gibt’s aber auch einfach wieder viel zu viel Gutes, und
ich mach‘ mir schon wieder Notizen wie diese hier: ‚Sinkane: unbedingt
Anschauen! Sudanesisch-amerikanischer Sänger, der Pop und Blues und
Funk und afrikanische Volksmusik zusammenbringt.’ Den darf ich aber auch
wirklich nicht verpassen. Seit vier Wochen läuft sein wundervoller Song
‚Galley Boys’ in meinem Kopf – ich hoffe, das hört endlich auf, wenn ich

WORD! CONFERENCE
Im Konferenzteil „Word!“ der Berlin Music Week widmet man sich in Panels und Podiumsdiskussionen
fachmännisch dem Thema „Music Released“. At Berlin Music Week’s Word! conference, professional panels and
podium discussions will tackle the subject of Music Released.
Man kann diese Worte „Music Released“
nicht ausnahmslos romantisch lesen, wie wir
es in den Begrüßungsworten dieses Magazins
getan haben. Das „Freisetzen“ der Musik ist
nämlich zugleich eine Tatsache innerhalb
der Musikindustrie, vorangetrieben durch
die weltweite Vernetzung und natürlich die
Digitalisierung der Klänge. Die Konferenz
„Word!“ widmet sich den Fragen, Problemen
aber auch den Visionen und Chancen, die
sich daraus ergeben. Durch Vorträge, Workshops, Info-Stände und Keynotes werden innerhalb der Word! die technischen Prozesse
dieser Entwicklung ebenso durchleuchtet,
wie ihre Auswirkungen auf die Produktionsbedingungen. Unter der thematischen
Strecke Diversity versammeln sich zudem
Perspektiven, die oftmals auf Veranstaltungen der westlichen Mainstream Musikindustrie weniger im Fokus stehen, jedoch für
ein Weiterdenken der Musikwirtschaft und
Musikkultur interessant und relevant sind.

V., also jene Macher und Firmen, die tatsächlich versuchen, unabhängig, eben „indie“,
zu agieren. An den drei Indie Days, die teil
der Word! Konferenz sind, können Fachbesucher und interessierte Musikfans erfahren,
was genau das bedeutet. Thematisch hat das
Programm dabei viele spannende Themen
und Charaktere versammelt. Zum Beispiel
den britischen Autoren und Blogger Adam
Harper, der den Begriff „Indie“ von jeglicher
Nostalgie befreit und konstatiert: „Indie Goes
Hi-Tech“. Anhand von Künstlern wie FKA
Twigs und Laurel Halo erläutert er, wie junge
Künstler dank neuer technischer Möglichkeiten viel freier und dichter an ihren Fans sind,
als man das zur vermeintlichen Hochzeit des
Indies je sein konnte. Krönender Abschluss
der Indie Days wird dann zum bereits zweiten Mal die Verleihung der VIA VUT Indie
Awards sein, mit denen wieder „unabhängige
Großartigkeit in sechs Kategorien“ prämiert
werden.
Not everyone will read as much excitement
and mystery into the words “Music Released”
as we did in our introduction to this magazine.
After all, releasing music also refers to a serious process in a music industry driven by global networks and of course the digitization of
sound. Our Word! conference looks at the questions, problems, visions and opportunities that
arise during this process. Talks, workshops,
info booths, and keynote addresses during
the conference will illuminate the technical
processes in this shift as well as their impact
on the production environment. The Diversity
segment will gather additional perspectives
that are often neglected at Western mainstream
music industry events, but which are interesting and relevant for a broader understanding
of the music business and music culture.

It doesn’t take much to be indie these days.
Just play poorly copied British-sounding rock
with snappy riffs and part your hair down the
side. Not so with VUT Indie Days. VUT is short
for Verband unabhängiger Musikunternehmen
e. V., the German association of independent
music enterprises. They actually try to act
independently, which is of course what “indie”
refers to. During the three Indie Days that
form the heart of the Word! conference, music
professionals and interested fans can experience exactly what that means. The programme
content features lots of exciting topics and
individuals. Like British author and blogger
Adam Harper, who has freed the term of all
nostalgia by proclaiming that indie has gone
high-tech. Using examples from artists like
FKA Twigs and Laurel Halo, he explains how
new technology has made recent acts much
freer and closer to their fans than artists ever
were during the so-called heyday of indie.
Topping off the Indie Days will be the second
VIA VUT Indie Awards, which recognizes independent greatness in six categories.

Das Karrieresprungbrett als Publikumsevent. Auch 2014 gilt: beim Berliner Pilsner Music Award ist dabei sein längst nicht alles.

much more than a battle of the bands.
Am Ende kann es natürlich nur einen geben,
der die Goldtrophäe abstaubt, aber auch der
Rest vom Siegertreppchen darf sich freuen.
Wenn es am 3. September zum Finale in den
Postbahnhof geht, werden die letzten drei
von mehr als 350 Bewerbern zusammen mit
Headliner I Heart Sharks auf der Bühne stehen und um den Award kämpfen. Eine Fachjury aus Szenekennern von vor und hinter den
Kulissen des Musikgeschäfts trifft die Auswahl, gefragt sind vor allem Live-Qualitäten
und Authentizität. Als Preise winken professionelle Studioarbeit und -aufnahmen mit
etablierten Produzenten und ein Gutschein
für hochwertiges Band-Equipment. Und weil
der Berliner Pilsner Music Award traditionell
ein fester Bestandteil der Berlin Music Week
ist, können sich die Teilnehmer nebenbei
schon einmal auf das ganz große Publikum

winning acts on the podium will have plenty to
be happy about. When the finals get underway
at Postbahnhof on 3 September, the last three
of the more than 350 competing acts will share
the stage with headliners I Heart Sharks and

jury of musicians and music business insiders
will choose the best, looking mainly at live
performance quality and authenticity. The
winners get to record in a professional studio
with established producers as well as receive
a voucher for high-quality band equipment.
And since the Berliner Pilsner Music Award
has long been a standard feature in Berlin

Eine Premiere, die alle begeistern wird: Das First We Take The Streets bringt neue Acts und alte Helden der
Straße zusammen – free for all! This premiere will put everyone in a festive mood. First We Take The Streets
brings together new acts and old stars of the streets in a two-day free-for-all.
Es gibt Ecken in Berlin, da ist an jedem
Frühlings- und Sommerabend Festival. Die
S-Bahnstation an der Warschauer Brücke
ist so eine. Oder der Schlesi. Sonnenuntergang, Späti-Bier auf die Hand und eine junge Dame, die mit glasklarer Stimme eigene
Songs und Indie-Cover singt – so einfach und
schön kann es manchmal sein. In diesem Jahr
verneigt sich auch die Berlin Music Week
vor dieser lebhaften Szene. Am 4. und 5.
September 2014 gibt das neue, kostenlose
Festivalformat First We Take The Streets in
Berlin lebenden Musikern, Straßenmusikern
und Soundkünstlern eine Plattform: Zwischen
dem Berliner Postbahnhof und der East Side
Gallery wird es von 15 bis 21 Uhr diverse
Spots zum Spielen geben; zudem befindet
sich an der o2 World Spree Bar eine Hauptbühne, die exklusiv von den Lokalmatadoren
Mighty Oaks kuratiert wird. There are parts
of Berlin that feel like a festival on any given
evening during the spring and summer. The
Warschauer Strasse S-Bahn station is one.
The Schlesisches Tor U-Bahn station is another. Enjoying the sunset with a beer from
the corner store, listening to a young woman
with a crystal-clear voice singing her own
songs and indie covers – it doesn’t get much
simpler or nicer than that. This year Berlin
Music Week is paying tribute to this lively
scene. On 4 and 5 September 2014, the new,
free festival format First We Take The Streets
will provide a stage for Berlin’s musicians,
street musicians, and sound artists. There will
be various spots to play from Postbahnhof to
the East Side Gallery between the hours of
3 pm and 9 pm, plus a main stage at the
o2 World Spree Bar exclusively curated by
local heroes Mighty Oaks.

Die Mighty Oaks sind der Berlin Music Week eng verbunden. In diesem Jahr kuratieren sie die Bühne an der o2
World Spree Bar – ein guter Anlass für ein kleines Interview. Mighty Oaks have close ties to Berlin Music Week.
This year they’re curating the stage at o2 World Spree Bar. That’s a good reason for a short interview.
Was können wir von „eurer“
Bühne erwarten?
Wir versuchen eine gute Mischung aus Performern zu
finden, die sich gegenseitig
ergänzen, dabei aber trotzdem viele verschiedene Stile
und Emotionen auf die Bühne bringen. Natürlich werden
wir dabei auch befreundete
Künstler einladen, die wir für
talentiert halten – und hoffen, dass es das Publikum
ähnlich sieht.
Was war das beste oder verrückteste Straßenkonzert,
das ihr je gesehen habt?
Jackson Dyer, der nun schon
zweimal mit uns auf Tour
war. Er ist ein großartiger
Straßenkünstler. So haben
wir ihn entdeckt.

Gebt ihr eigentlich Geld,
wenn ihr an einem Straßenmusiker vorbeikommt?
Kommt drauf an. Es gibt ja
viele Leute, die an der Ecke
klampfen, oder Trompete
spielen oder sonst was. Das
ist nicht immer unser Ding.
Aber manchmal hört man
einen wirklich talentierten
Gitarristen, einen tollen
Sänger oder einen geilen
Akkordeonspieler – dann
schmeißen wir natürlich ein
paar Münzen rein. Wir sind
ja selbst Musiker und wissen,
dass es für die heutzutage
nicht leicht ist an Geld zu
kommen.

Spree Bar Stage?
We are trying to find a good
mix of music and performers
that will compliment one another, while bringing diverse
sounds and feelings throughout the night. Of course we
are going to bring in bands
that we like, that we see potential in, and that we hope
people will also establish a
connection with.
What was your weirdest or
your best “on street concert” ?
Jackson Dyer, who we‘ve taken on tour twice now, is a
great street performer. That‘s
how we found him.
When you pass a musician
playing in the berlin streets do you throw him some coins?
It really depends. There are a
lot of people plucking away
on the streets, or tooting trumpets or what have you. Generally it’s not our vibe, but on
occasion you get a talented
guitarist, a great singer, and
wicked accordion player, and
we toss a few coins if we’ve got
extra in our pockets. You gotta
remember though: we’re musicians too, and money ain’t
that easy to come by these
days!

Seit mehr als vier Jahren zeigt uns das
deutsch-schwedische Duo Nordic By Nature,
wo in Sachen Musik aus Skandinavien der
Hammer hängt. Nach der Premiere 2013 gibt
es auch diesmal wieder das kostenlose Festival Our/Berlin Musik Week. Das bedeutet:
drei Tage lang neue Musik aus dem hohen
Norden und Freigetränke von Our/Berlin
Vodka – für Musikbegeisterte, Liebhaber
sowie Branchen- und Medienvertreter. Die
Showcases finden in der Zeit von 14 bis 22
Uhr statt und sind frei zugänglich. Jeder, der
mal in die nordische Luft des First We Take
Berlins Festival reinschnuppern will, ist also
herzlich eingeladen. Bisher bestätigt sind Jaakko Eino Kalevi (FI), Sandra Kolstad (NO),
DNKL (SE), The White Album (DK), Alice
Boman (SE), Adna (SE), Boeoes Kaelstigen
(SE), Aurora Aksnes (NO), Hey Elbow (SE)
und SHERPA (DK). The German-Swedish
duo Nordic By Nature has been schooling us
in the Scandinavian music scene for more than
four years now. After a successful premiere in
2013, the free festival Our/Berlin Music Week
is being held for the second time. That means
three full days of new music from the far north
and complimentary drinks from Our/Berlin
Vodka – for music enthusiasts, fans, industry
and media representatives alike. Showcase sets
will be playing from 2 – 10 pm and are open
to all. Anyone keen to breathe Nordic air at the
First We Take Berlin Festival is very welcome
to do so. Confirmed acts so far include Jaakko Eino Kalevi (FI), Sandra Kolstad (NO),
DNKL (SE), The White Album (DK), Alice
Boman (SE), Adna (SE), Boeoes Kaelstigen

Das Schaulaufen der großen Talente geht in die zweite Runde: beim First We Take Berlin wollen mehr als 120
Newcomer-Acts die Berliner Clubs erobern. The showcase of the greats on its second go-round: First We Take
Berlin features more than 120 up-and-coming acts out to conquer the Berlin clubs.
Es wird ja oft gemunkelt, das Berliner Konzertpublikum sei schwer zu knacken, übersättigt und habe schon alles gesehen. Die
Premiere des FWTB im vergangenen Jahr
widerlegte diese Vorurteile eindrucksvoll. Da
mischten sich vor den Bühnen und auf den
Straßen Indie-Kids mit Presse-Topcheckern
und Bookern und feierten gemeinsam Acts,
die so frisch waren, dass die meisten noch
nicht mal ihr Debüt fertig hatten. Aber vielleicht ist genau das der große Vorteil dieses
Festivals: Hier ist das Live-Können die einzige Währung, hier weiß keiner, was kommt,
hier hat noch keiner ein Bild, eine Meinung,
eine Wertung im Kopf, wenn die Show beginnt. Auch in diesem Jahr bietet das Line-up
des zweitägigen Showcase Festivals wieder
viel zu viel von allem. Zu viel Talent. Zu
viele Konzerte. Zu viel Euphorie. Aber hey,
wenn das keine Luxussorgen sind? There is
a rumour that Berliners make a tough crowd
of concertgoers – that they are oversaturated and have already seen it all. Last year’s
FWTB premiere made a very impressive case
to the contrary. Indie kids, press pundits and
bookers mixed, mingled and jointly celebrated
acts so fresh that many had not even finished
their debut albums. But maybe that’s exactly
what makes this festival great. ‘Live’ skills are
the only currency here; no one knows what’s
coming, and there is no preconceived picture,
opinion, or value judgment when the show
begins. This year’s line-up foretells yet another
amazing two-day showcase festival, and once
again there is much too much of everything.
Too much talent. Too many concerts. Too
much euphoria. But hey, if those aren’t luxury
problems, what are?

Teichmann sowie Zuri Maria Daiß. The Partnership with Africa Foundation e.V. presents the Africa Music Convention, two evenings of
music curated by Andi and Hannes Teichmann and Zuri Maria Daiß.
Zu sehen gibt es bei der AMC nicht weniger
als Bühnenbegegnungen, die man in dieser
Konstellation wohl nur hier erleben kann. So
trifft am Donnerstag im Astra der Ghanaer
Guy One auf den deutschen Drummer Max
Weissenfeldt (Poets Of Rhythm) und sein
neues Projekt The Polyversal Souls, während
am Freitag im Badehaus Szimpla Tlale Makhene aus Südafrika mit Burnt Friedmann eine
gemeinsame Soundsprache finden wird. Weitere Kollaborationen kommen von Suff Daddy & Nash (Elfenbeinküste), den Gebrüdern
Teichmann & Psychotek Tonic (Simbabwe)
sowie DJ Raph (Kenia) & Carmel Zoum (Republik Kongo/Berlin). Auch die Puppetmastaz werden mit Biko MC (Simbabwe) Teil des
Programms sein. Die AMC ist übrigens ein
Projekt der Stiftung Partnerschaft mit Afrika
im Rahmen des COMENGA-Programms mit
finanzieller Unterstützung des Bundesministeriums für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit

else. On Thursday at Astra, Guy One from

Wie schon im letzten Jahr bietet das Land
Brandenburg in Kooperation mit Radio Fritz
jungen Künstlern aus der Region die Chance
zu zeigen, „dass die Mark neben Störchen,
Gurken und endlosen Alleen auch eine äußerst agile Musikszene vorzuweisen hat“ –
wie es so schön auf der offiziellen Website
heißt. Könnte klappen, denn die versammelten Künstler haben tatsächlich einiges auf
der Pfanne. Team Amateur zum Beispiel,
mit ihrem kleinen Hit „Schieß mir ins Knie“.
Oder 3 Plusss & Sorgenkind, die charmant
unflätigen Seitenscheitelrap mitbringen, der
ja erfahrungsgemäß dieser Tage ganz gut
läuft. „Oh Mann, ist das langweilig, Kacken
ohne Smartphone!“ – ist nur eine ihrer Zeilen, die irgendwie, äh, passen. Norman Ebel
hingegen ist eher der junge traditionsbewusste Songwriter mit der Raspelstimme, und Julia Toaspern das weibliche Äquivalent dazu.
Just like last year, the State of Brandenburg
has joined forces with Radio Fritz to present
young artists from the region, giving them a
chance to show “that the Mark [of Brandenburg] boasts not only storks, cucumbers and
endless avenues, but a remarkably agile music
scene as well” – as the official website puts it.
It’s a lovely description we think, and given
the quality of artists coming out of here, that
could very well be the case. Take Team Amateur for example, with their minor hit “Schieß
mir ins Knie” (Shoot Me In The Knee). Or 3
Plusss & Sorgenkind, with their charmingly
rude side-part rap that seems to be doing quite
well these days. “Oh Mann, ist das langweilig,
Kacken ohne Smartphone!” (Oh man what a
bore, taking a shit without a smartphone!) –
it’s just one of their lines that seems rather, um,
fitting. Then there’s Norman Ebel, who’s more
the young, tradition-conscious songwriter with
the raspy voice, and Julia Toaspern, the female
equivalent.

Eine Ära geht zu Ende, eine
neue beginnt: Wo sich Berlin doch sonst eher in coolem
Understatement gefällt, kann
man in dieser Sache ruhig
mal große Worte bemühen.
Denn das Berlin Festival,
jenes Open Air, das zuerst bewiesen hat, dass der
Flughafen Tempelhof eine
aufregende Event Location
ist, zieht um. Ein Schritt, der
viele nostalgisch stimmen
wird, aber was an Kulisse
verloren geht, wird in Sachen
Flair und Spirit gewonnen.
Das Festival zieht nämlich
in jenes pulsierende Areal,
das in den letzten Jahren
immer mehr zum Magnet
für Ausgehfreudige wurde:
das Gebiet um die Arena, das
Badeschiff, die Hoppetosse,
das neue White Trash, das
Glashaus und dem Club der
Visionäre. Ergänzt um zwei

durchtanzen, ohne dabei das
Gelände zu verlassen. As one
era comes to an end, another
begins. Berlin may be famous
for its cool understatement,
but we’ll make an exception
for an event like this. The
Berlin Festival, that pioneering open-air happening
that first showed Tempelhof
Airport could be an exciting
event location, is moving. It’s
a step that will cause a lot of
people to become nostalgic,
but what we’re losing in terms
of scenery, we’re making up
for in style and spirit. The
festival’s new home is in a
great spot that has become a
magnet for people who like
to go out. It’s known best for
places at the Arena: the Badeschiff, Hoppetosse, the new
White Trash, Glashaus and
Club der Visionäre. Rounded off by two outdoor stage
plus an Art and Food Village,
this is a chance to experience
Berlin’s finest venues along
with international acts at
a big Berlin-style party. Of
course this wouldn’t be Berlin
if the party didn’t go nonstop.
Anyone who can handle it
can dance straight through
all 48 hours of it, from Friday 10 pm to Sunday 10 pm
without ever having to leave.

Dieser Preis hat es in sich: wer am 7. September beim New Music Award gewinnt, hat das Publikum hinter und die Karriere vor sich.
It’s all in the award: whoever wins the New Music Award on September 7 has the audience behind and a career ahead of them.
Hinter der Zeremonie im feudalen Berliner
Admiralspalast steht nämlich nicht nur die
Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Medien und Kultur, sondern auch die Landesrundfunkanstalten der ARD mit ihren
Jugendsendern und all ihrer Expertise. Neben dem Award selbst gibt es für den Sieger
einen Gutschein für Musik-Equipment im
Wert von 10.000 Euro, die Höhepunkte des
Wettbewerbs werden einen Tag später auf
Einsfestival ausgestrahlt. In den vergangenen
Jahren konnten unter anderem Bonaparte,
Kraftklub und Captain Capa den Preis für
sich beanspruchen, 2014 stehen wieder neun
Konkurrenten aus den verschiedenen Sendegebieten bereit. Musikalisch ist die gesamte
Bandbreite vertreten, und qualitativ wird wie
immer die oberste Schublade aufgemacht:
Rapper eRRdeKa aus Augsburg bringt harte Beats und smarte Texte zusammen wie
Romeo und Julia, This Void aus Jever produzieren tanzbaren Indierock und Lausbubencharme von internationalem Format, und
Lary aus Berlin verbeugt sich vor Triphop,
Elektro und Soul, indem sie ihre ganz eigene
„Future Deutsche Welle“ surft. AnnenMayKantereit aus Köln zelebrieren das heiße
Herz und die strapazierten Stimmbänder von
Männern, die nicht lügen können, Heinrich
aus Leipzig lösen jedes Versprechen ein, das
jemals in einer Wave-Disco gegeben wurde,
und für Faakmarvin aus Bremen endet die
Party frühestens mit dem Weltuntergang.
Drehmoment aus Saarlouis meint vor allem
sein Gehirn, wenn er sein HipHop-Muskeltraining macht, Tom Thaler & Basil aus
Mannheim philosophieren sich durch tiefenentspannte Summerjams, und PewPew aus
Darmstadt könnten mit ihrem Helium-DiscoPop jederzeit auch im Weltraum auf Tournee
gehen. Eine Expertenjury aus Sendervertretern und Musikindustrie kürt nach der Show
am Sonntag den Gewinner und bringt die
Berlin Music Week damit zu einem würdigen
Abschluss. Der New Music Award wird auch
in 2014 gefördert durch die Initiative Musik
gemeinnützige Projektgesellschaft mbH - mit
Projektmitteln der Beauftragten der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien Prof.

Besides the Award itself, the winner will take
home a 10,000-euro music equipment voucher
and Einsfestival will be airing the competition
highlights one day later. Bonaparte, Kraftklub
and Captain Capa have all claimed the prize
in recent years, and nine competitors from
the various broadcasting areas stand ready to
name the 2014 prizewinner. The music runs
the gamut in terms of style, and top quality
is an absolute given: rappers eRRdeKa from
Augsburg bring hard beats and smart texts
together like Romeo and Juliet, This Void
from Jever deliver danceable indie rock and
a rogue-boy charm that translates all over
the world, and Lary from Berlin bows to trip
hop, electro and soul by surfing her very own
‘Future Deutsche Welle’. Cologne’s own AnnenMayKantereit celebrate the feverish heart

and overtaxed vocal chords of men who cannot lie, Heinrich from Leipzig make good on
every promise ever made in a Wave disco, and
with Faakmarvin, the party stops no sooner
than the end of the world. Drehmoment from
Saarlouis is a force of nature, especially when
he’s flexing his hip-hop muscles, Tom Thaler
& Basil from Mannheim philosophize their
way through deeply relaxing summer jams,
and PewPew from Darmstadt could take their
helium disco-pop on a deep space tour any
day. An expert jury of broadcast and music
industry experts will be on hand to select the
winner after show on Sunday, bringing Berlin
Music Week to a worthy conclusion. In 2014
the New Music Award will again be sponsored by the Initiative Musik gemeinnützige
Projektgesellschaft mbH with project funding
provided by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media, Professor
Monika Grütters, based on a resolution passed
by the German parliament (Bundestag).

Da kann der Flohmarkt am Boxi mit seinen RamschvinylDealern einpacken: Am letzten Tag der Berlin Music Week
findet der bereits aus New York, London und Paris bekannte Independent Label Market im Urban Spree statt. Unter
anderem dabei: !K7, Get Physical, Monkey Town, Because,
Erased Tapes, Ninja Tune und Comeme. The rubbish vinyl
dealers at the flea market on Boxhagener Platz may as well
pack it in and go home: on the last day of Berlin Music Week,
the beloved Independent Label Market – already well-known
from New York, London and Paris – will be held at Urban
Spree. Featured stalls include, among others: !K7, Get Physical, Monkey Town, Because, Erased Tapes, Ninja Tune,
and Comeme.

Eine Premiere, die man sich als Kenner elektronischer Musik nicht entgehen lassen sollte: Das neu gegründete Label
Reflected feiert in der FLING-Partyreihe zu Barbecue und
Drinks den ersten Release „Oblivion“. Dazu gibt’s gelebte
Labelkultur 3.0, denn Reflected will von Beginn an mehr
als bloß Platten rausbringen. Wie das gemeint ist, wird man
an diesem Abend spüren. A premiere that no self-respecting
electro enthusiast should miss: the newly-founded label Reflected is celebrating its first release ‘Oblivion’ with barbecue
and drinks as part of the FLING party lineup. Think of it as
the start of Label Culture 3.0, since Reflected wants to do more
than just put out records – and they aim to show it right out of
the gate. The evening should give us a sense of what’s to come.

Das Open Air zu Ehren der heimischen Poeten hat sich zu
einer wahren Erfolgsgeschichte entwickelt, was vor allem
am erfrischenden Clash der Stile liegen dürfte, den man dort
geboten bekommt. In diesem Jahr werden so unterschiedliche
Künstler wie Marteria, Sido, Thees Uhlmann, Miss Platnum,
Gloria, Lary, OK KID und Sierra Kidd aufeinandertreffen.

Die TED Konferenz im kalifornischen Monterey ist DIE
Adresse für Zukunftsvisionen im namensgebenden Bereich
„Technology, Entertainment, Design“. Die weitaus kleineren
aber nicht minder spannenden TEDx-Ableger finden bereits
seit 2009 weltweit statt. Im City Cube in Berlin widmet man
sich an diesem Tag unter dem Motto „The Next Step“ den
(richtigen) Schritten in die Zukunft. The TED Conference in
Monterey, California is THE address for visionary talks in
the eponymous areas ‘Technology, Entertainment, Design’.
TEDx – the much smaller, but no less exciting offshoot – has
been held in various locations around the world since 2009.
Under the motto ‘The Next Step’, speakers at City Cube in
Berlin will address the (right) way to proceed into the future.
Startups zum Zweiten! Die Startup Safary ermöglicht noch
tiefere Einblicke in die Welt und die Büroräume junger
Gründer. In rund 140 Events laden über 100 Firmen zwei
Tage lang in ihre heiligsten Hallen. MTV Cribs goes Startup,
könnte man also sagen. Und wie hieß es in der Kultsendung
so oft: „This is where the magic happens.“ Startups galore!
Startup Safary allows a deeper insight into the world and
offices of young founders. In the course of two days, over 100
companies will hosting some 140 events in their most hallowed
of halls. MTV Cribs goes startup, you might say. And as they
say so often in the cult show, ‘This is where the magic happens’.

Nach der erfolgreichen Premiere im letzten Jahr entern auch
2014 wieder über 100 Berliner Startups die Hauptstadtrepräsentanz der Deutschen Telekom AG und das Ludwig
Erhard Haus der IHK Berlin. Hier kann sich jeder selbst
überzeugen, ob die Startup-Szene dem Hype gerecht wird,
der sie gerade umweht. After last year’s successful premiere,
Startup Night 2014 brings another 100+ Berlin startups to
the Deutsche Telekom AG’s capital city headquarters and the
Ludwig Erhard Haus at IHK Berlin. Decide for yourself if the
startup scene lives up to all the hype that surrounds it.

Zwar wurde bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch kein Act genannt,
aber beim ADD-Festival von tape.tv kann man sich schon
mal auf Spannendes einstellen. Immerhin brachte man in
den vergangenen Jahren Two Door Cinema Club, Max Herre,
Thees Uhlmann und Kakkmaddafakka auf die Dächer. Tix
gibt’s wie immer nur zu gewinnen, aber wer keines bekommt,
kann auf tape.tv und spiegel.de live mitschauen. No acts have
been named on the lineup yet, but tape.tv’s ADD Festival is sure
to have something interesting in store. Past years have seen
incredible rooftop concerts from the likes of Two Door Cinema
Club, Max Herre, Thees Uhlmann and Kakkmaddafakka.
Tickets are sold out as usual, but those left without one can
watch a live stream on tape.tv and spiegel.de.
