Die Wurzeln der Kunststadt Düsseldorf reichen weit zurück: Durch sein Engagement als großzügiger Förderer und
Freund der Künste leitete Kurfürst Jan Wellem vor über dreihundert Jahren Düsseldorfs Entwicklung zu einer modernen
Großstadt ein. Die herausragende Kunstsammlung, die er mit seiner zweiten Frau Anna Maria Luisa de' Medici aufbaute,
sorgte dafür, dass Düsseldorf als kulturelles Zentrum europaweit bekannt wurde. Aber auch bedeutende Impulse der
Moderne und der zeitgenössischen Kunst gingen und gehen von Düsseldorf aus: Bedeutende Künstler wie z.B. Joseph
Beuys, Jörg Immendorf oder Markus Lüpertz haben große Teile ihrer Werke in Düsseldorf geschaffen; die sogenannte
Düsseldorfer Fotoklasse trug entscheidend zur Etablierug der Fotografie als eigenständige Kunstform bei. Insgesamt
präsentiert die Stadt ihren Besuchern heute 26 Museen und mehr als 100 Galerien.
Musikalisch ist besonders die Deutsche Oper am Rhein hervorzuheben – sie wartet mit dem größten Ensemble
Deutschlands auf und begeistert seit Jahrzehnten mit ihren Aufführungen. Theaterinteressierten stehen darüber hinaus
allein am Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus vier Bühnen zur Auswahl.

The roots of Düsseldorf as an art metropolis go way back: Through his commitment and involvement as a generous
patron and lover of art, Prince Jan Wellem initiated the development of Düsseldorf into a modern city well over three
hundred years ago. The outstanding art collection which he set up with his second wife, Anna Maria Luisa de’ Medici,
ensured that Düsseldorf became known throughout Europe as a cultural centre. But Düsseldorf also provided, and
still provides, important impulses in terms of modern and contemporary art: noted artists such as Joseph Beuys, Jörg
Immendorf or Markus Lüpertz created large parts of their works in Düsseldorf; Düsseldorf’s photo class, as it is known,
contributed significantly to the establishment of photography as an independent art form. On the whole, the city today
presents its visitors with 26 museums and over 100 galleries.
Musically, the prime venue worthy of mention is the Deutsche Oper am Rhein – it boasts the largest ensemble in Germany and for decades, has wowed audiences with its performances. In the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus alone, theatre

The classical city tour
A comfortable coach will take participants past the famous Königsallee (“Kö“) shopping boulevard with its exclusive
shops and arcades. The trip continues across one of the many bridges over the Rhine to the Oberkassel district
from where the panorama of the Old Town and its landmarks may be enjoyed. And the Rhine Tower lift will take
visitors up to a height of 168 meters to enjoy a fantastic bird’s eye view of the river and city.

Unter dem Motto „Kirchen, Kunst & Kneipen“ zeigen Ihnen unsere StadtführerInnen während des einstündigen Stadtrundgangs u.a. das Geburtshaus Heinrich Heines und das alte Rathaus mit Jan Wellems Reiterstandbild. Danach geht
es mit einem Ausflugsschiff in den MedienHafen. Vom Schiff aus genießen Sie 30 Min. lang einen traumhaften Blick
auf Altstadtpanorama, Landtag, MedienHafen und die herrlichen Jugendstilfassaden am linken Rheinufer.
Old Town walk
With the motto “churches, arts and pubs“, our guides show you the birth place of Heinrich Heine, the old town hall
with Jan Wellem's equestrian statue and much more. After this, an excursion boat takes you to the “MedienHafen“.
From aboard ship, enjoy for 30 minutes a fabulous view of the Altstadt, the parliament, the “MedienHafen“ and the
magnificent Art Nouveau facades on the left bank of the Rhine.

Schloss Benrath gilt heute in seiner künstlerischen Einheit aus Bauwerken, Inneneinrichtungen und den 60ha großen Gärten als eines der in Europa selten gewordenen Gesamtkunstwerke des ausgehenden Rokoko. Sehenswert
auch das Museum für Europäische Gartenkunst im Seitenflügel. Auf der anderen Rheinseite zählt Zons mit seiner
malerischen Altstadt und der komplett erhaltenen mittelalterlichen Stadtmauer zu den Besuchermagneten.

Benrath Castle in Düsseldorf’s south – the summer residence and hunting lodge of Prince Karl Theodor dating back
to the 18th century, nestled in a sprawling landscaped park – today houses a number of museums.
To the left of the Rhine, you will find Zollfeste Zons, the “Rhenish Rothenburg”, a Romantic medieval fortification with
windmill and largely preserved city walls.
Hombroich Island, meanwhile, will stun you with a special synthesis of art, architecture and lower Rhine nature, or
delve into the enchanted ensemble of the Baroque Dyck moated castle. Having been Europe’s capital of culture for
