The end of winter may finally be near as we progress slowly through the month of
March. This has been an daunting winter to say the least. The Polar Vortex has
caused enormous problems for many people across the state and in many cases across
the country. Not only has it handcuffed administrators into making decisions to close
schools for safety reasons, but it has also caused homeowners and business owners a
plethora of problems including ice damage to roofs and gutters, an increase in heating
and utility bills, an increase child care due to school closings, a decrease in customer
spending at local businesses just to name a few. Although it’s easy for us to complain
about our situation and the inconveniences the weather has caused this winter, it will
soon pass and we will once again look forward to the blossoming of Spring.
We are now 1/3 of the way through the second semester and preparations are beginning to take place for many end-of-the-school-year activities/events. Although we all
look forward to warmer weather and Spring activities, we must remember that our
students need to finish the school year strong and continue on their journey of seeking
knowledge and wisdom. Too often students associate Spring time with relaxation, procrastination, and doing just enough to get by. This is not our expectation and I’m sure
not the expectation of our parents. Together we must continue to support and encourage students to stay the course and keep their focus on academic success as the school
year end draws near.
Lastly, the CAHS Staff and I would like to extend a warm welcome to the parents of
our 8th grade students who are receiving the Cavalier Connection Newsletter for the
first time. The Cavalier Connection is the best way to stay informed about important
activities/events that may impact your child as a freshmen at CAHS next year. Please
take the time to read the Cavalier Connection now and throughout the Spring. We are
excited about the arrival of the Class of 2018 and look forward to working with all of
you and your children in the upcoming school year and providing all of our students
with a great educational experience.

SENIOR EXIT Presentations
All students in the state of Michigan are required to complete a Senior Exit Presentation, as
part of the state's Career Initiative. All seniors will be part of this series of presentations at Carman-Ainsworth High School during March - May 2014. If you have a senior student, you will be
notified of the date and time of your child's presentation and we strongly encourage you to attend
this important event for your child.
During the presentation, all senior students will be answering three
important questions about: Who am I? Where am I going? How will I
get there?
Members from the CAHS community will be sitting on evaluation panels to review all Senior Exit Presentations. This is a culminating project for your child to participate in, and is required by a state mandate
for graduation.
More information will be sent to parents of seniors before Senior Exit
Presentations take place. Please be sure to discuss this requirement
with your child as we progress through March, April, and May.
Seniors Attend the Holocaust Memorial Center
On Sunday, February 23rd, approximately 40 seniors voluntarily attended a field trip to the Holocaust Memorial Center in West Bloomfield escorted by CAHS ELA teachers, Ms. Jessyca Mathews
and Ms. Carrie Mattern. The students spent two hours researching in the Center’s library, followed
by a one hour long tour of the entire museum. If that wasn't’ enough to get a real feel for the Holocaust experience, the students had the opportunity to listen to an 84 year old Holocaust survivor
explain details of their survival during this tragic time period in history. Several students remarked that it was an amazing learning experience and one that they were happy to be part of.
According to our teachers, the students conducted themselves with class and dignity and received
numerous compliments from the Center’s employees. A special thanks to Ms. Mattern and Ms.
Mathews for taking the time out of their busy schedules to afford our students this special opportunity.
Teacher of the
Year 2014
Students and parents are welcome to nominate any CAHS
teacher for the SVL Teacher of
the Year Award. Nomination
forms can be picked up in the
Main Office or printed off by
going to the CAHS website.
Nominations are
due by Friday,
March 14th.
Senior Fines
At the end of every school year, there is a mad rush for
seniors to pay their fines that have accumulated over
the course of their high school careers. Parents are
often shocked at the amount of money their child owes in book fees, lost sports
equipment, broken school property, lunch money, and an assortment of other
unpaid fines. We advise all of our seniors to check in the Media Center and be
sure they do not have unpaid fines waiting for them when it’s time to pick up
their cap and gown for graduation. Caps and gowns are not distributed to any
student who has an unpaid fine. Avoid the stress and long lines at the end of
the school year by paying your fines early. You may come into the Media Center
and pay your fines anytime between 7:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. daily.

Michigan Child Protection Registry
Are your children safe while online? Michigan families, especially minors, are becoming inundated with
advertisements from alcohol, tobacco, pornography
and gambling marketers through different internet
and cell phone inboxes. Texting their advertisements
is the newest marketing effort that many of these
companies are using. Thankfully, the State of Michigan offers a free program to stop adult advertisements from reaching e-mails, mobile phones (text
messaging ads) and instant messenger IDs. The
Michigan Child Protection Registry, like the federal
Do Not Call List, is a free do-not-contact service for
Michigan’s families and schools and can be located at
www.ProtectMIChild.com.
As a strong supporter of this registry, I would like to
encourage you to sign your entire family up for the
registry and inform your friends and
colleagues about how they can protect
children and families from unwanted
adult advertising. To sign up only
takes seconds. Just go to
www.ProtectMIChild.com and keep
your family safe.

AnonymousTips.com
It’s easy to report and all tips go directly to the principals email keeping the
student who reports the tip anonymous. Students have used this system for the
past year and it has really helped us address inappropriate behavior within
CAHS and/or alerted us to students who may be in a crisis.
College Acceptance Letters
It’s that time of year when many seniors begin receiving their college acceptance letters.
Some students will also receive a financial package letter showing them what scholarships
they’ve qualified for through the college. Please remind your child to bring in ALL financial package awards and all other awarded scholarships to the Guidance/Career center.
Students should bring in their financial package awards REGARDLESS if they are going
to that specific college. Some students will receive several letters because they’ve applied
to several schools.
