L’automne des vendanges
à l’entrée dans l’hiver
Herbstliche Traubenernte vor dem Winter
Autumn grape harvests as we move towards winter
Après les moissons, les récoltes donnent lieu à une succession de fêtes gourmandes. Les
vendanges, elles, sont célébrées dans les localités du vignoble les week-ends de fin septembre
à octobre ! L’automne renoue avec les bourses, puces et foires à thème. Aux premiers frimas,
choucroute et bäckeoffe sont des plats appréciés. En Alsace, terroir, nature et culture ne
sont jamais loin. Les nombreux musées offrent des occasions de découvertes merveilleuses.
La nature, fort belle en automne, aussi : brame du cerf dans les Vosges du nord, chaumes
et fermes-auberges des Hautes Vosges… Autrefois, la Saint Martin (11 novembre) clôturait
l’année économique. Dès novembre débutait la période des veillées réunissant familles
et voisinage. En Alsace, on creusait et éclairait des betteraves - non des potirons ! - pour
représenter les morts. Ces farandoles de lumière, alliées à la chaleur et convivialité des
veillées annonçaient l’attente de Noël…
Die Erntezeit ist Anlass für so manches Gourmetfest. Die Weinlese wird an den Wochenenden von Ende
September bis Oktober in den Dörfern des Weinbergs gefeiert ! Auch Börsen, Flohmärkte und Messen
werden im Herbst großgeschrieben. An den ersten kalten Tagen wärmen uns deftige Mahlzeiten wie
Sauerkraut und Bäckeoffe. Im Elsass sind Terroir, Natur und Kultur miteinander verbunden. Die zahlreichen
Museen bieten Gelegenheit zu vielen Entdeckungen. Auch die Natur, die im Herbst besonders schön ist,
hat einiges vorzuweisen: Brunstschrei des Hirsches in den Nordvogesen, Hochalmen und Bauernhöfe
mit Gaststättenbetrieb in den Hochvogesen… Früher schloss das Wirtschaftsjahr mit dem Martinstag
(11. November). Ab November beginnt die Zeit, in der sich Familie und Nachbarn in den Abendstunden
versammeln. Im Elsass erhellte man die Fenster mit Rübenlichtern - ausgehöhlte und mit einer Kerze
bestückte Rüben (und keine Kürbisse!) -, die die Geister der Toten symbolisierten. Diese Lichterketten, die
behagliche Wärme und das gemütliche Beisammensein kündigten die Adventszeit an…
After the harvests, there is a succession of food-related festivals. The grape harvest is celebrated in vineyard
localities every weekend from the end of September to October! Autumn has its exchanges, flea markets and
thematic fairs and with the first shivers, sauerkraut and bäckeoffe are welcome dishes. In Alsace, land, nature
and culture are never far away. Many museums offer the chance for some marvellous discoveries. Nature,
always beautiful in autumn, also: slabs of venison in the northern Vosges, high pastures and farm-inns in
the Southern Vosges. In former times, the feast of Saint Martin (11 November) closed the economic year.
From November, there were evening celebrations bringing families and neighbours together. In Alsace, they
carved beetroots – not pumpkins! – to represent the dead. These lanterns, with the warmth and friendliness
of evening festivities, led into the pre-Christmas period…
