Opel – das Unternehmen
Opel is one of Europe’s largest automakers. It
was founded in 1862 by Adam Opel in Rüsselsheim,
Germany. Opel and its British sister brand Vauxhall
sell over one million vehicles annually. In 2014
this made it the third-largest passenger car brand
in the European Union. Opel is conducting the
largest model offensive in its history and will
introduce 27 new vehicles and 17 new engines by
2018. The brand has entered new segments with
vehicles such as the compact Mokka SUV, the
small lifestyle ADAM and the elegant Cascada
convertible.
Opel, einer der größten europäischen Automobilhersteller, wurde im Jahr 1862 von Adam Opel in
Rüsselsheim gegründet. Die Marke verkauft
zusammen mit ihrer britischen Schwestergesellschaft Vauxhall jährlich mehr als eine Million Fahrzeuge und war damit im Jahr 2014 die drittstärkste Pkw-Marke in der Europäischen Union. Opel
befindet sich in der größten Modelloffensive
seiner Geschichte und wird bis 2018 insgesamt
27 neue Fahrzeuge und 17 neue Motoren auf
den Markt bringen. Mit Fahrzeugen wie dem kompakten SUV Mokka, dem Lifestyle-Kleinwagen
ADAM und dem eleganten Cabrio Cascada hat
Opel neue Segmente besetzt.
Headquartered in Rüsselsheim, the company has
11 plants and four development and test centers
in eight European countries. Opel employs around
34,500 people in Europe, with more than 16,500
in Germany. Opel and Vauxhall are present in
over 50 countries. In 2014 Opel/Vauxhall sold
1.095 million passenger cars and light commercial
vehicles worldwide.
The Opel Group GmbH was established effective
July 1, 2014 as a sister company of Adam Opel AG.
This new company is responsible for Opel/Vauxhall as well as all other GM operations in Europe.
The Opel Group Management Board and Chairman
Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann are also based in Rüsselsheim. The operative business of Adam Opel AG
remains unaffected by this reorganization.

Mit Wirkung zum 1. Juli 2014 wurde die Opel Group
GmbH gegründet – als Schwestergesellschaft der
Adam Opel AG. Sie bündelt die Verantwortung
für Opel/Vauxhall sowie alle anderen Aktivitäten
von GM in Europa. Die Geschäftsführung der
Opel Group unter der Leitung von Dr. Karl-Thomas
Neumann hat ihren Sitz ebenfalls in Rüsselsheim.
Das operative Geschäft der Adam Opel AG bleibt
von der Neuorganisation unberührt.

1862Adam Opel founds a company in Rüsselsheim to build sewing
machines, laying the foundation for the future Adam Opel AG.
One million sewing machines are built up to 1911.
1863
Opel’s first advertisement is published.
1865
The company hires its first apprentice.
1886
By entering the booming bicycle manufacturing business,
Opel secures a second foothold for his company and an
affordable form of mobility for his customers. In the following decades, Opel becomes the world’s largest bicycle producer.
1890
The first factory fire service is founded.
1899 “Opel Patent Motor Car, System Lutzmann” is the name
given to the first Opel automobile.
1902 The first Darracq chassis are outfitted with Opel bodies in
Rüsselsheim. The vehicles are marketed under the brand name Opel Darracq.
1906 The 1,000th Opel automobile leaves the factory.
1907
The first “workers’ committee” is founded; the first Opel works
council starts its work.
1911
Opel builds the first aircraft engine.
Foundation of a pension fund, the “Adam Opel Stiftung”,
for the employee retirement pension plan.
1912 Opel celebrates its 50th anniversary.
1924
The first car built with assembly-line processes rolls out
of the plant: the legendary 4/12 hp model, better known as the
“Laubfrosch” or “tree frog”.
1928 The RAK rocket-propelled vehicle program begins: RAK 1
accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just eight seconds on the
Opel Racetrack. One month later, Fritz von Opel reaches a top
speed of 238 km/h in the RAK 2 on the AVUS track in Berlin.
1929 General Motors acquires Adam Opel AG.
1930
Market launch of the Opel Blitz truck series.
1931
Opel is the first manufacturer to set up a customer service
training center.

1935
Opel becomes the first German carmaker to manufacture
more than 100,000 vehicles per year.
2002 Production starts at Opel’s new state-of-the-art facility

1937
Opel observes its 75th anniversary. The company focuses
on automobile manufacturing, selling its bicycle production.
1939
For the fourth consecutive year, Opel is the largest automaker

2007 Opel expands further in Central and Eastern Europe: start of

1946

After staying with GM, the company is restructured and together

1963 Production starts at Ellesmere Port car plant in the U.K.

1862 Adam Opel gründet in Rüsselsheim ein Unternehmen zum Bau
von Nähmaschinen. Damit legt er den Grundstein für die spätere
Adam Opel AG. Bis 1911 werden eine Million Nähmaschinen
verkauft.
1863
Die erste Werbung von Opel erscheint.
1865
Das Unternehmen stellt den ersten Auszubildenden ein.
1886
Mit dem Einstieg in die prosperierende Fahrradproduktion
schafft sich Opel ein zweites Standbein und seinen Kunden eine
kostengünstige Möglichkeit der Fortbewegung. In den folgenden

First Opel automobile patent: the reverse gear in the “Lutzmann”.
1983 The Senator is the first Opel car with the ABS System.
1909
Opel makes the automobile affordable with the “Doctor’s Car”,
sold at a price of 3,950 marks.
1984
The Opel Kadett GSi is the most streamlined car
in its class, with a cd value of 0.30.
1910 Introduction of the modular construction system at Opel:
prefabricated car bodies can now be combined with different
engines and chassis.
1924 Opel is the first German manufacturer to introduce assembly-line
manufacturing methods that enable high-volume production.
1928 Opel builds the rocket vehicles RAK 1 and RAK 2. RAK 2 has
24 solid fuel rockets that catapult the vehicle to an amazing
238 km/h, setting a new world record at the Avus in Berlin,
Germany.
1935 The Opel Olympia is the first German large-volume vehicle with
a self-supporting whole-steel body. The new design reduces the
car’s weight and improves aerodynamics. The rigid passenger cell
and a deformable front end also improve passive safety.
1957
The Olympia Rekord P1 is launched. The novel panoramic
windscreen offers the best possible all-round view.
1965The Opel Experimental GT is the first vehicle study by an European automobile manufacturer and the first concept car
to go into production (in 1968).
1967
Patent application for the headlamps of the Opel GT.
The pop-up headlamps can be retracted by rotating around the
longitudinal axis.
1976 All Opel models are fitted with a composite-glass windscreen.
1981
The engineering study Tech 1 demonstrates Opel’s pioneering
role in the field of aerodynamics: the experimental vehicle
achieves a drag coefficient of 0.235, setting a world record.
Opel becomes the first carmaker to use environmentally friendly
water-based paints.
1982Opel applies for a patent for a new safety feature, a laterally
offset steering column in the Corsa A. In the event of an accident
it passes by the body.

1989 Opel is the first European manufacturer to offer catalytic
converters as standard on all gasoline models.
World champion in aerodynamics: the new Opel Calibra has the
lowest drag coefficient of all series-production vehicles: cd 0,26
1991The Astra is equipped with the Opel Safety System with side
impact protection, support ramps in the seats and seat-belt
tensioners. From 1995, all models come with full-size airbags for
driver and front-seat passenger as standard.
1993 Opel receives the patent for a “protective panel” integrated in
the seat backrests to form a rigid barrier. This protects
passengers from injury by objects sliding forwards if the driver
brakes hard or is involved in an accident. Opel also introduces
the pedal release system to reduce leg injuries in the case of an
accident.
1995 The Opel Corsa Eco3 is the first 3-liter car in the world.
1999 Flex7 seating system makes its debut in the Opel Zafira.
2002With Adaptive Forward Lighting (AFL) Opel presents a
game-changing headlight technology and is the first automotive
manufacturer to introduce this technology in mid-size cars.
Opel and GM present the hydrogen-fuel cell concept cars
HydroGen 3 and Hy-wire.
2003
Introduction of fuel-saving Twinport technology for gasoline
engines.
2004Opel engineers develop the mechatronic FlexRide chassis that
makes driving safer and more comfortable.
2005
All diesel models are available with maintenance-free diesel
particulate filter.

2007
With the Opel Flextreme study, Opel presents the groundbreaking
E-Flex electric propulsion system for the first time.
The company introduces ecoFLEX variants with extremely low CO2
emissions for its volume model lines.
Opel introduces the FlexFix bicycle carrier system – an integrated
transport system.
2008
The Opel Eye is introduced in the Opel Insignia. The small
wide-angle, high-resolution on-board camera reads road signs
and lane markings.
Ten HydroGen4 fuel cell vehicles are on the streets of Berlin in
a large-scale road test – Opel’s contribution to the CEP (Clean
Energy Partnership).
2009
The electric Opel Ampera is unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.
2010
Opel introduces FlexDoors in its new Meriva, innovative
rear-hinged rear doors that facilitate convenient and safe access
to the car – a premiere for a volume manufacturer.
2011
Launch of the Opel Ampera: the revolutionary Ampera is the
first emission-free, electrically driven car in Europe suitable for
everyday driving.
New 2.0 L BiTurbo CDTI engine with unique intercooler system
and sequential double turbo system with two charging stages.
2012
Opel develops intelligent, glare-free LED matrix light.
Two all-new engine generations are developed.
2013
With IntelliLink Opel launches the next generation of infotainment
systems.
Launch of new 1.6-liter gasoline and diesel turbo engines.

The top performer in the colorful ADAM line-up is the new
sports star ADAM S. The heart and soul of the pocket rocket
is a 1.4-liter Turbo with 110 kW/150 hp and 220 Nm torque
on tap between 2,750 und 4,500 rpm. The engine is
combined with a crisp six-speed transmission with sporty
gear ratios, thus ensuring perfect continuity at any speed.
Maximum speed is 210 km/h. The ADAM S’ 1.4 Turbo is fitted
with Start/Stop technology and makes do with a mere 5.9
liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers in the combined cycle.
The standard front lip spoiler, bold side sill moldings and an
extended rear bumper characterize the bodywork of the
muscular sportsman and distinguish it from its ADAM
siblings. The characteristic rear spoiler and chrome-plated
tail pipe complete the sporty look. The overall feeling
continues in the interior with standard sport pedals and
optional Recaro sport seats.

With the Mokka, Opel was the first German manufacturer to launch a contender in the growing sub-compact SUV B segment. Despite its compact
length of 4.28 meters, the Mokka offers plenty of space for five people. It

Upgraded, more efficient, more attractive and more functional than ever –
the new Opel Meriva celebrated its world premiere in early 2014. In addition
to its unique flexibility, the Mervia now also stands out with refreshed design
accents and with an array of technologies that further enhance the Opel
minivan’s comfort and efficiency. The complete gasoline and natural
gas-powered engine portfolio as well as the new-generation 1.6 CDTI meet
the Euro 6 emission standards. The 1.6-liter Turbo diesel is available in
three power outputs (70 kW/95 PS, 81 kW/110 PS and 100 kW/136 PS) and is
considered the quietest and most efficient in its class; its fuel consumption
can be as low as 3.8 liters per 100 kilometers. Furthermore, the Meriva’s
emissions undercut the 100 gram mark in normal operation at just 99 g/km
CO2. New gearboxes enable softer and more precise shift operation, and the
modern IntelliLink infotainment system perfectly integrates comprehensive
smartphone functionality into the Meriva cockpit. This is quality that pays
off – after the Opel Meriva came out on top in the overall test of all passenger

The Country Tourer is the Insignia for adventurers. Defining

The Opel Ampera is a milestone on the road to sustainable
mobility. Opel established a new segment in the European
automotive market with the launch of this electric vehicle
in 2011. A 16 kWh lithium-ion battery pack feeds the
111 kW/150 hp electric drive unit. Depending on driving
style, terrain and temperature, it delivers between 40
and 80 km of pure electric operation with zero emissions.
For longer journeys a gasoline engine serves as a range
extender to continue powering the car electrically. This
enables journeys of more than 500 kilometers without
needing to stop at a filling station. The Ampera E-pioneer
has collected an impressive list of accolades for its groundbreaking propulsion concept.

The Opel Combo fulfills a broad spectrum of criteria due to its great diversity
of models. The range of models comprises two basic types of bodywork: those
with short and long wheel bases (2,755/3,105 mm). Both types are available
as a panel van or passenger vehicle with standard or high roofs. The panel van
variant boasts impressive figures including the exemplary maximum payload
of up to 1 ton (including driver), up to 5.4 m³ load volume as well as maximum
load length of 3,050 mm and height of 1,550 mm. The large rear door along
with the low loading bay threshold facilitate easy loading. For passenger
transport, there is the Combo with five seats and a short or long wheel base,
standard or high roof, sliding doors as standard, and tailgate or split rear
doors. The seven-seat version is available with a short wheel base. So the
Combo model line provides a flexible basis for professional use in business or
industry and for private use as a versatile multi-purpose family and leisure
vehicle.

große Hecktüröffnung und die niedrige Ladekante. Für die Personenbeförderung gibt es den Combo-Pkw als Fünfsitzer mit kurzem oder langem Radstand,
in Normal- und Hochdachausführung, mit serienmäßigen Schiebetüren sowie
Kombi-Heckklappe oder Doppelflügel-Hecktür. Die siebensitzige Pkw-Ausführung ist mit kurzem Radstand erhältlich. Damit bietet die Combo-Modellreihe
für den professionellen Einsatz in Gewerbe und Industrie eine ebenso flexible
Basis wie als variables Allzweckmobil für Familie und Freizeit.

The second-generation Opel Vivaro combines the functionality of a light
commercial vehicle with the comfort and design of a passenger car. The new
edition continues the successful concept of diverse variants and is available
in various configurations in two overall lengths and two heights as a panel
van, Combi, crew van or platform cab. The panel van offers total load volume
up to 8.6 m³ and plenty of space in the cabin. The Vivaro cockpit boasts
modern IntelliLink infotainment technology and user-friendly navigation as
well as equipment details that quickly and easily turn it into a mobile office.
It is also extremely economical, with all-new turbo diesel engines that can
reduce fuel consumption down to 5.7 liters per 100 km and CO2 emissions
down to 149 g/km.

The Opel Movano comes with a host of innovative technologies, an extremely comfortable and practical interior, low fuel
consumption and exemplary operating costs. The Movano
engine portfolio comprises five units including state-of-theart turbo diesel technology: the all-new 2.3-liter BiTurbo
with 100 kw/136 hp or 120 kW/163 hp comes standard with
Start/Stop. The top-of-the-line engine delivers maximum
torque of 360 Nm, and the other units also provide powerful
pull. With optional rear-wheel drive and dual tires, the
Movano keeps moving even under challenging conditions.
The Movano sets standards with its impressive selection of
model variants, wheelbases, load capacities and vehicle
heights – in total there are 188 body and equipment variants.
Its large family of variants ranges from the spacious panel
van with maximum load volume of 17 m³ and 4.5 tons maximum permissible weight with dual wheels to the practical
dropside. Together with a growing number of certified partners, Opel can meet almost any conversion need for the
Movano. The Movano is even safer thanks to technologies
and equipment details such as standard ESP with a range
of driving assistants including Hill Start Assist and Trailer
Stability Program as well as the Blind Spot Mirror in the passenger sun visor.

Opel/Vauxhall sold almost 1.1 million vehicles in 2014
In spite of the difficult economic environment, 2014 ended on a high note
for Opel/Vauxhall with the company recording its best sales figures in recent
years. With 1.076 million new car registrations in Europe last year we had
an increase of some 35,000 cars or 3.4 percent. Opel thereby grew twice as
much as the overall European market that only saw a growth of 1.7 percent.
Opel’s share of the overall European vehicle market was up for the second
year running reaching 5.75 percent. In 2014, Opel achieved its best sales
figures and market share since 2011.
Opel verkaufte 2014 fast 1,1 Millionen Fahrzeuge
Trotz schwieriger gesamtwirtschaftlicher Rahmenbedingungen hat Opel mit
seiner britischen Schwestermarke Vauxhall im Jahr 2014 das beste Verkaufsergebnis seit Jahren eingefahren. Mit 1,076 Millionen Neuzulassungen
verzeichnete das Unternehmen vergangenes Jahr in Europa einen Zuwachs
von rund 35.000 Autos oder 3,4 Prozent. Damit konnte Opel doppelt so
stark zulegen wie der europäische Gesamtmarkt, der lediglich ein Plus von
1,7 Prozent verbuchte. Opels Anteil am europäischen Gesamt-Fahrzeugmarkt wuchs damit im zweiten Jahr in Folge auf 5,75 Prozent. Sowohl beim
Absatz als auch beim Marktanteil erzielte Opel die höchsten Werte seit
dem Jahr 2011.
Successful product offensive
The basis for this success is our modern range of cars. The brand is investing
heavily in updating and expanding its product portfolio, conducting the
largest model offensive in its history by introducing 27 new vehicles and
17 new engines by 2018. Opel has successfully entered new segments with
vehicles such as the compact Mokka SUV, the small lifestyle ADAM and the
elegant Cascada convertible. The product offensive will continue in 2015
with the new entry-level KARL and the new Astra. The brand will be able to
offer the best small car portfolio of all times with KARL, Corsa and ADAM.
Sales up in more than 15 countries
The result is multi-market based: Opel/Vauxhall recorded growth in more
than 15 markets compared to the previous year, including core markets
such as Germany, the UK, France, Italy and Spain. Opel booked its largest
sales volume increases in the Czech Republic (+ 55 percent), Hungary
(+ 52 percent) and Poland (+ 41 percent). The market share grew in more
than 12 European countries.
Two Opel models in the top ten
The successful Corsa and Astra models were once again among the top
ten best-selling cars in Europe in 2014, taking fifth and seventh place. The
small Mokka SUV and our flagship Insignia again ranked second in their
respective segments.
Erfolgreiche Modelloffensive
Basis des Erfolgs ist die moderne Fahrzeugpalette, die europaweit überzeugen konnte. Opel investiert umfangreich in die Erneuerung und Erweiterung
des Produktportfolios. Die Marke befindet sich in der größten Modelloffensive ihrer Geschichte und wird bis 2018 insgesamt 27 neue Fahrzeuge und
17 neue Motoren auf den Markt bringen. Mit Fahrzeugen wie dem kompakten
SUV Mokka, dem Lifestyle-Kleinwagen ADAM und dem eleganten Cabrio
Cascada wurden erfolgreich neue Segmente besetzt. Die Produktoffensive
wird 2015 unter anderem mit dem neuen Einstiegsmodell KARL und dem
neuen Astra fortgesetzt. Mit KARL, Corsa und ADAM wird Opel seinen
Kunden im Jahr 2015 das beste Kleinwagen-Portfolio aller Zeiten anbieten
können.
Verkäufe in mehr als 15 Ländern gesteigert
Das Ergebnis beruht auf einer breiten Basis: Opel/Vauxhall konnte gegenüber dem Vorjahr in mehr als 15 Märkten zulegen, darunter Kernmärkte wie
Deutschland, Großbritannien, Frankreich, Italien und Spanien. Die größten
Volumen-Gewinne verbuchte Opel unter anderem in der Tschechischen
Republik (+ 55 Prozent), Ungarn (+ 52 Prozent) und Polen (+ 41 Prozent). Der
Marktanteil legte in mehr als zwölf europäischen Ländern zu.
Zwei Opel-Modelle unter den Top Ten
Die Erfolgsmodelle Corsa und Astra etablierten sich auch 2014 wieder
unter den Top Ten der meistverkauften Autos in Europa – sie belegten die
Ränge fünf und sieben. Der kleine SUV Opel Mokka und das Flaggschiff
Insignia belegten erneut Platz zwei ihrer Segmente.
