FOOD PANTRY
This week the Society of St. Vincent de
Paul is asking us to say a separate prayer
for the poor and forgotten individuals in our
neighborhoods. The Food Pantry will
distribute food on July 23 and Aug. 6 & 20
out of the rectory basement between 2 and
3 pm. At this time soup, tuna and cereal are needed.
We say thank you to Carol Cox-Nickels for her generous
donation in loving memory of John and Virginia Cox.
Why not be part of something that promises to have a positive
effect on the renewal of the Catholic Church in our diocese? ARISE
Together in Christ Season one will start in October 2016! It is an
opportunity to develop a closer relationship with Christ, grow in
community and reach out in service to others.
ARISE small groups will meet regularly for six week sessions primarily
in homes and other locations around the parish. Facilitators will be
provided with seasonal information to prepare for each session
utilizing the well-organized materials and training provided by
RENEW International (a Catholic ministry organization). In addition
to ongoing support and online resources, RENEW will provide
specific training workshops for parish leaders and facilitators each
season.
If you are interested in becoming a parish leader or facilitator,
please contact Alayne Cox at [email protected]
ADULT ALTAR SERVERS NEEDED!
The parish is in need of an adult altar
server to join a small group of men
and women who assist at funeral
masses. No previous experience is
necessary - we will train you. It is
expected that you would be called
about once every four to six weeks to assist at a funeral.
Please call the rectory if you think you would like to help
us in this way.
Please see the important information
regarding Senior Housing at the end of
this bulletin.
A Note from Fr. Larry
In place of Fr. Larry's note, the following is an
excerpt from July 17, 2016 edition of Connect!
(Liturgical Publications Inc.):
Message of the Week (Luke 10:38-42)
Martha was caught up in a whirlwind of her own
making. She stressed herself out with all the tasks and
chores she thought she had to do to host Jesus, but
Jesus wasn’t the one who expected all of that. His only
expectation was that Martha would prepare for him her
heart, but she was fixated on preparing her home
instead.
How often do we create a similar whirlwind in our
lives, forgetting what really matters? But Jesus asks us
to reorganize our priorities. He tells us, “There is need of
only one thing.” Really, Jesus? Have you seen our lists!?
Don’t we need to do all of this? The Lord says no. What
we need to do is to make time to be with him. The same
Lord who turned water into wine and fed five thousand
men with five loaves of bread and two fish can also
multiply our time. So instead of being like Martha who
tried to tell Jesus what to do let’s be like Mary who
listened to what Jesus had to say.
SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
We hear stories this week about hospitality to others and to God.
The First Reading says that Abraham sits outside on a hot day and
looks up to find three men nearby. “The LORD appeared to Abraham
by the terebinth of Mamre”. This is not far from Hebron in Israel.
Abraham reacts to their presence by flying into action. Talk about
hospitality! He begs them to relax from their journey, to receive
comfort, nourishment and rest. Would we send them away since we
did not expect them? Abraham
rushes into the great tent, issuing
commands to his wife Sarah. “Quick,
three measures of fine flour! Knead it
and make rolls.” He picks the best
steer from the flock, orders the
servant to prepare it, dashes outside
for curds and milk and at long last,
sets the whole meal before them.
Quite a welcoming scene! Sarah
stood behind the tent flap listening
when one of the
men made an astonishing statement to Abraham that next year Sarah
would bear a son. Sarah actually laughed out loud, a real LOL, as she
heard that in her old age she would give birth. This resulted in her
son’s name, “Isaac” from the Hebrew word “Tzachaq” which means
“to laugh”. God intervened in human history, Sarah gave birth and
Abraham welcomed God with all he had. Can we do the same? The
Responsorial Psalm tells us that the one “who does justice will live in
the presence of the Lord.” Can we practice justice and offer
hospitality? Are we open to the Lord’s presence in our lives even if it
is not when and how we expect it?
In the Second Reading from Colossians, Paul says that “a mystery
that has been hidden for ages is now manifested to God’s Holy Ones.
The mystery is this: Christ is in you.” When we are attuned to the
Lord, we treasure the presence of Christ within each of us, our homes
and in our community. We need to make time every day to recognize
this sacred life within us and others. How different our world would
be if we were so hospitable to the Lord each day!
In the Gospel, Jesus is warmly welcomed into the house of
his friends Mary and Martha. Mary arranges herself at his feet,
focusing on him. Martha bustles about preparing the meal. Then,
tired and irritated, Martha demands that Jesus put a stop to Mary’s
lounging and make her come and help. Jesus says, no, “ Mary has
chosen the better part.” Isn't this unjust to Martha? Should she have
told Jesus, “We are not having any food tonight; we are both going to
just sit and stare at you!”? Martha’s trouble is not that she is
scrambling about, but that she forgets about Jesus. He even tells her
that she is anxious and worried about many things and has forgotten
the one thing necessary. Excellent hosts manage somehow to get
everything ready but also to truly listen to and converse with guests.
We are asked to give hospitality to all people because God is within
them, deep in their souls. Abraham gave it. Mary gave it. Martha
forgot, as we do sometimes, but she learned. Let’s try to learn it too.
What does Pope Francis say about this scene? “It is important to
understand that this is not the contrast between two attitudes:
listening to the word of the Lord—contemplation—and practical
service to others. They are not two opposing attitudes, but, on the
contrary, each is essential to our Christian life, each an aspect
that should never be separated from the other, but lived in
profound unity and harmony. … For a Christian the works of
service and charity are never detached from the main source of
all our actions: listening to the Word of the Lord, being—like
Mary—at the feet of Jesus in the attitude of the disciple. And this
is why Martha is reprimanded.” Before we can carry on the work
of Jesus, we must be attentive to the Scriptures during Mass and at
home, pray, set aside time to be quiet and listen as Jesus speaks to our
hearts.
Our work can become an escape from troubles in our own
families, church, community or with God. Others may say, “Isn’t he
wonderful! He’s so dedicated!” Workaholism is the one addiction for
which we get praised. Eventually, it’s harder and harder to find
meaning in anything outside of our work. Idleness may well be the
devil’s workshop, but busyness is not always a virtue. Maybe there
was another way of getting that meal on the table in Bethany. With
creativity, perhaps we too can find solutions to being overworked and
discover ways to learn from our Lord. This summer, let’s take some
breaks from work in order to be truly focused on others and to bask in
the presence of God.
