Arise Together in Christ is an international,
diocesan-sponsored, yet parish-centered spiritual
renewal effort in which small groups will meet for
six weekly sessions starting this October, at
various times, to share personal faith experiences.
In announcing the Holy Year of Mercy, Pope
Francis, in The Face of Mercy, challenges us to
perform both spiritual and corporal acts of mercy.
Lay group discussions of Christ’s presence in the
Bible and today will lead to renewing our faith,
evangelizing, and possible service initiatives. If you
are interested, we have a few group leadership
positions still available. Contact Alayne Cox,
[email protected], for more info.

As you are probably aware, church attendance during
the summer months tends to drop off as vacations and
weekend sporting events often conflict. Many families
attend mass near where their weekend activities take
them. The services we provide within the parish and for
the larger community continue year around, as do their
associated expenses. Your consistent financial support
of our parish is vital to achieving our stewardship
mission.
The easiest way to be sure that your gift of treasure
reaches us, even when you can’t be here, is through
enrollment in our electronic offertory program. If you
have not yet enrolled we encourage you do so this
month. Once you have enrolled, you can relax knowing
that Holy Name will receive your gifts throughout the
summer.
You can enroll three ways – forms are available in the
back of the church, you can visit Faith Direct’s secure
web site at www.faithdirect.net to enroll online, or you
can call a customer service representative at Faith
Direct. Our parish code is NY349
As always, know that your generosity is truly a gift from
God.
A Note from Fr. Larry
This weekend’s gospel (Luke 10:25-37)
includes the Parable of the Good Samaritan,
well-known to just about all of us. It’s certainly
well-known; but is it well-followed? It’s a parable that
reminds us of our obligation to love our neighbor, and
includes that very thought provoking question: “And
who is my neighbor?” If we consider that question
seriously as people of faith, the answer has to
incorporate a circle of “neighbors” larger than simply
those we’re most familiar with and most comfortable
with. If we put ourselves into that parable, would we
(and that includes me) be more likely to be the ones
who “passed by” rather than the Samaritan who
stopped to help? Meeting our responsibilities in life
requires prudent choices about how we use our time,
treasure and talents (and the people of HNJ parish are
very generous with all three); but if we seriously think
and pray about it, I believe that most of us (and again
that includes me) would conclude that there’s room for
improvement in that often-difficult area of loving our
neighbor.
Starting on Monday, July 11th, I’ll be around the
parish a bit less for most of the rest of July. I’ll be in and
out of the Rectory and not traveling away from the New
York City area. Msgr. Curran and the other resident
priests will be filling in, and I very much appreciate their
giving me some free time. I can always be reached
through the parish office. For those of you planning
summer trips, please be safe and try to include at least
Sunday Mass in your plans.
FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
If we listen carefully to the readings this Sunday, we
will hear the whole Christian, Catholic life very gently
stated. How do we determine the Lord’s ways and how can
we live out the law of the Lord in our lives? In the First
Reading, Moses describes how simple God's command is:
it is not too mysterious and remote. It is not up in the sky,
nor across the sea. The commandment of the Lord is very
near to us, already in our hearts and in our mouths. We
have only to carry it out. The Responsorial Psalm remind
us to “Turn to the Lord in your need, and you will live.”
Especially in times of affliction and pain, our prayers are
answered by kindness, help, mercy, and protection. So, we
are invited to praise and glorify God, to recognize God in
our daily lives as the one who revives our hearts and helps
us to live in the Lord’s ways.
In the Second Reading from Colossians, Paul says
“Christ Jesus is the image of the invisible God”. How do
we make God’s love visible today? Is it by adhering solely
to a ritual or by following the law within our hearts?
“Christ Jesus is the one who is before all things, the
firstborn of all creation.” With whom did he spend time?
With whom do we want to spend our time? With God and
the people we love or are we always in a hurry to do more
“important” things? If Jesus is the head of the body, the
Church, then how do we mirror Jesus in our actions? How
do we allow Jesus to guide us?
In the Gospel, a lawyer is very interested in this
same question of what is most important about the law of
God. He asks Jesus to collapse the whole law down to a
single saying. Since the answer is “not too mysterious and
remote,” Jesus asks the lawyer what he thinks it is. Jesus
keeps working on us, trying to get us to see the simple
answer that hides inside us. But, the lawyer also tries to
“test” Jesus. “Who IS my neighbor?” The familiar parable
of the Good Samaritan follows wherein a man who was
robbed and beaten up on a busy road was left for dead. The
priest and the Levite, those who should have known the
most important part of the Law passed him by. They did so
for certain ideological, religious reasons. Thus, the priest
did not stop because he feared that the man was dead and,
being a priest, if he touched a dead body he would be
ritually defiled and thereby unable to offer sacrifice in the
temple. The scribe had his own religious reasons. But, they
may also have not wanted to bother with someone not of
their class. Jesus is not trying to slander these Israelites; he
is showing that your neighbor does not consist of just your
own tribe or family or even just your friends. Every person
is beloved and precious to God.
Finally, a Samaritan, a despised “foreigner” who
lived in the central province of the country, came along the
road. He was the kind of person who was least expected to
respond, but when he saw the beaten up fellow, he was
moved by compassion, stopped, and generously helped
him. Jesus tells us to “go and do likewise”. This is the law
written within our hearts, not details about keeping specific
laws but a regard for others that arises out of genuine care.
Let us be the Good Samaritan today to those who are
trafficked, abused, and hungry. Unwelcomed immigrants,
the homeless and the lonely in our own families, rectory or
block provide us with the opportunity to do God’s work.
Pope Francis reflected on the Good
Samaritan. “Love, the Lord tells us, is
never abstract or distant; it “sees” and
it responds. The compassion shown by
the Samaritan is an image of the
infinite mercy of God, who always sees
our needs and draws near to us in love.
The command to love God and
neighbor, then, is supremely practical;
it entails caring for others even to the point of personal
sacrifice. By the end of the parable, we see that the
“neighbor” is not so much the man in need, but rather
the one who responded to that need with compassion.
Jesus tells all of us to be neighbors in this sense: “Go
and do likewise.” He himself is the model of the Good
Samaritan; by imitating his love and compassion, we
show ourselves truly to be his followers.” This is not too
mysterious or remote. We can start now. It is written within
the law and within each of us.
FOOD PANTRY
In today's gospel when Jesus asks "which
of these three was a neighbor to the
robber's victim?" the scholar of the law
answered, "the one who treated him with
mercy." Jesus then said, "Go and do
likewise." The Food Pantry will distribute food on July
23 and Aug. 6 & 20 out of the rectory basement between
2 and 3 pm. At this time soup, tuna and cereal are
needed.
ADULT ALTAR SERVERS NEEDED!
The parish is in need of an adult altar
server to join a small group of men
and women who assist at funeral
masses. No previous experience is
necessary - we will train you. It is
expected that you would be called
about once every four to six weeks to assist at a funeral.
Please call the rectory if you think you would like to help
us in this way.

in Brooklyn and in Queens in English, Spanish, and
Haitian Creole.
The course is designed for:
