God’s Word for the Month of February
Introduction of New Team Players
Dear Fellow Players on the Team of God’s Kingdom!
This would be how an article would begin in a German newspaper introducing a new
coach for a soccer team. Now I certainly was not introduced as a coach or even as a
player and my introduction as Pastor to First Lutheran in Toronto is now more than 3
months ago. But I really like to think back on it again and again, not only because it was
a truly wonderful worship service and because my family and I were so warmly
welcomed (and the cakes and goodies were so delicious!). Really, this worship service
and in particular the promises we made to each other make us a team!
On the one hand it was really an uplifting experience to promise to you, the
congregation “to love, serve and pray for God’s people, to nourish you with God’s word
and the Holy Sacraments; leading you by my own example in the use of the means of
grace in faithful service and holy giving and that I shall promise to you to be a faithful
witness in the world and that God’s love may be known in all that I do.”
On the other hand this is enough to make one break out into a cold sweat. What I
promised here is very challenging.
But there are two things, which gave me the faith and courage to say this.
Firstly, in regard to the “I will..” there is always the “the Lord being my helper”. Without
this plea, without the certainty that I always live through the strength and help of God I
would never have been able to make this promise.
Jesus himself promised his disciples that he would fill them with the Holy Spirit and with
the strength from above (John 20: 21-23). In this text we find the motivation and the
strength to change faith into real life and into the true team spirit of which we continually
speak.
And your promise as a congregation also has something to do with team spirit when you
were asked: “And you, people of God, will you receive this messenger of Jesus Christ,
sent by God to serve God’s people with the Gospel of hope and salvation. Will you
regard him as a servant of Christ and a steward of the mysteries of God? Will you pray
for him, help and honour him for his work’s sake, and in all things strive to live together
in peace and unity in Christ?”
And you replied, “We will!”
It is not only the pastor who is called to be a witness of Jesus in this world and to build a
community of faith. We, you and I, play together on the kingdom of God’s team, of
which First Evangelical Lutheran Church is a branch. We each have a position to play.
We are called together before God to witness his love and to live his love in this world.
By bringing your talents and abilities into our work you bring part of the treasure, which
God has given to this congregation. We together are responsible for this congregation.
Together we are asked to guide our team towards the future, to build community, to live
in faith by example and to welcome new people onto God’s team.

Liebe Mitspieler in der Reich Gottes Mannschaft!
So, oder ähnlich würde es in Deutschland in einer örtlichen Zeitung stehen, wenn ein
neuer Trainer einer Fußballmannschaft vorgestellt worden wäre. Nun bin ich nicht als
Trainer oder Spieler eingeführt worden und meine Einführung als Pastor der Ersten Ev.
Lutherischen Kirche in Toronto ist schon über drei Monate her. Aber ich denke immer
wieder daran, nicht nur weil es ein wunderschöner Gottesdienst war und meine Familie
und ich so herzlich willkommen geheißen wurden (und Torte und Kuchen so lecker
waren). Nein, dieser Gottesdienst und besonders die damit verbundenen Versprechen,
die wir einander gegeben haben, machen uns zu einer Mannschaft, zu einem Team.
Einerseits war es ein wirklich erhebendes Gefühl, Ihnen als Gemeinde, die Zusage zu
geben, „sie zu lieben, ihnen zu dienen und für sie zu beten; sie durch Gottes Wort und
die Sakramente zu nähren; sie durch das eigene Vorbild dazu anzuleiten, aus der
Gnade Gottes zu leben und darüber hinaus in allem ein glaubensstarker Zeuge zu sein,
dass Gottes Liebe in allem sichtbar wird, was ich tue.“
Auf der anderen Seite kann einem das aber auch Schweißperlen auf die Stirn treiben.
Es ist ja nicht gerade wenig, was man verspricht.
Aber es gibt zwei Dinge, die mir den Mut gegeben haben, diese Zusagen zu machen.
Erstens, zum „Ich will..“ kommt immer die Bitte dazu: „..und Gott helfe mir dabei.“ Ohne
diese Bitte, ohne die Gewissheit, dass ich immer aus der Kraft Gottes und seiner Hilfe
lebe, hätte ich das nie versprechen können. Jesus selbst hat seinen Jüngern zugesagt,
sie mit seinem Hl. Geist, mit der Kraft aus der Höhe, zu erfüllen (Johannes 20,21-23).

Hier finden wir Motivation, die Kraft, den Glauben im Leben umzusetzen und den
wahren Teamgeist, von dem immer wieder die Rede ist.
Und mit Teamgeist hat auch das Versprechen etwas zu tun, das Sie als Gemeinde
gegeben haben, als Sie gefragt wurden: „Nehmen sie diesen Boten Jesu Christi, als
von Gott gesandten Diener an? Sind sie bereit für ihn zu beten, ihm in seiner Arbeit zu
helfen und ihn darin zu ehren, und gemeinsam in Frieden und Einheit zu leben?“ Und
sie haben darauf geantwortet: „Ja, wir wollen!“
Nicht nur der Pastor ist berufen, ein Zeuge Jesu in dieser Welt zu sein und Gemeinde
zu bauen. Wir, Sie und ich, spielen gemeinsam im Team des Reiches Gottes,
Zweigstelle Erste Ev. Luth. Kirche Toronto, jeder auf seinem Platz.
Wir sind gemeinsam von Gott berufen, seine Liebe zu verkündigen und seine Liebe in
dieser Welt zu leben. Indem Sie Ihre Gaben und Fähigkeiten mit in unsere Arbeit
einbringen, bringen sie etwas von dem Schatz mit, den Gott unserer Gemeinde
geschenkt hat. Wir sind gemeinsam für unsere Gemeinde verantwortlich. Gemeinsam
sind wir gefragt, unsere Mannschaft weiter auf den Kurs in Richtung Zukunft zu bringen,
Gemeinschaft zu bauen, Glauben beispielhaft zu leben und neue Menschen in dieser
Mannschaft willkommen zu heißen.

Spieler auf dem Feld.

Outreach Committee/ Arbeitskreis fuer Oeffentlichkeitsarbeit
Nach der Fertigstellung der neuen Webseite wird sich der Arbeitskreis für
Öffentlichkeitsarbeit neu formieren, um sich Gedanken zu machen, wie wir unsere
Gemeinde und ihre Veranstaltungen besser in die Öffentlichkeit bringen können.
Wir freuen uns, wenn sie mitdenken und mitarbeiten und ihre kreativen Ideen
mitbringen. Der Arbeitskreis trifft sich jeden letzten Donnerstag im Monat (23. Feb. hier
in der Kirche um 19:30 Uhr) Für weitere Informationen rufen Sie entweder bei Karen
Berg an (416-699-5216) oder bei Pastor Schweter (416-496-3834).
Now that we have finished putting together the new website the Outreach Committee
will regroup and start thinking of ways in which we can bring our congregation and
activities into our community. We would be happy if you would think and work with us
and bring us your creative ideas. The Outreach Committee will meet on the last
Thursday of the month (Feb. 23 at the church at 7:30 p.m.). For further information

New - Bible Study Groups – New
The "Food for Soul" bible study group will have its first meeting (in English) with Pastor
Schweter at First Lutheran Church on Wednesday, February 8, beginning at 7:30 pm
until 9:00 pm, and you are cordially invited to attend. A simple meal will be provided
beginning at 6:30 pm. Further meetings will be scheduled for the second and fourth
Wednesday evening in each month throughout the spring. All that you need bring, in
addition to your favourite bible, is an inquiring mind, a welcoming heart and thirsty ears!
Eine deutschsprachige Bibelgruppe wird sich ab Februar immer am ersten Mittwoch im
Monat um 10.00 Uhr (vor den Senioren) in der Kirche treffen.
Wann die Bibelstudiengruppen im Osten und in Oakville weitergehen ist noch nicht
entschieden.

Lent Devotions/Passionsandacht
Lent devotions start on Ash Wednesday, March 1. These meditative devotions with
hymns, readings, prayers will take about 30 minutes. These devotions will take place
every Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. throughout Lent.
