A Message from Sabine Schweter
It is our obligation to make sure that our
church does not suffer the same fate as the
one in Picton. We must be aware that it is a
blessing to have this beautiful church but it
is also a responsibility. Mrs. van der
Smissen who in the early years of our
church went to Europe to collect money for
our church is a role model for me.
Every person in our congregation should
be thinking about how important First
Lutheran is to him/her.
God has given me gifts. What of these gifts
am I giving back to the church?
I have taken good care of myself
financially. Is my church in my financial
plan?
I have plans for my life. Is there a place in
the church in my life?
Do I pray regularly for my church?
We are all being asked so that our First
Lutheran Church can stay viable or even
become livelier. Everyone is responsible
and has a task in this.
Let God give us the wisdom to recognize
our obligations and let him give us the
strength to act on them.
Dear Congregation,
I would like to share something that
happened to me while I was on vacation
which quite upset me. On our vacation in
Prince Edward County we saw that a 135
year old church was being torn down. I was
shocked by this and many thoughts went
through my head.
Why was this church being torn down? Is
this just life happening? Will this also
happen to our lovely First Evangelical
Lutheran Church?
It made me realize that much energy is
needed to keep a church running. First off
there is the building. Since we are just in
the process of completing a roof renewal
we know exactly how much money, time
and strength is needed to complete this
project. Even if we do miss having the
service in our sanctuary, we can be
thankful that we have the opportunity to
celebrate our worship services in our newly
renovated back hall which is very close to
our sanctuary.
But it isn’t just money which keeps the
church afloat. It is above all the people- you
and I. But were there not also many people
in the Picton church who celebrated
worship services with each other?
Nonetheless it was torn down.

News from the
Congregation
Our thoughts are with Ute, Kristina and
Akira Zander. Ute’s father passed away in
August.
Update on the Roof
You may be wondering as to the state of
our roof. The good news is that we are
making progress with this. The main roof
has been re -shingled.
The men are now here doing the copper
work. This is extremely finicky work.
Coppersmiths are a scare trade so they
tend to be in control of their progress. The
actual workmanship on the copper is very
good. We are thankful for that and even if it
takes a bit longer we at least are assured
that the work being done is good.
Happy birthday to everyone who has a
birthday in October. In particular we would
like to congratulate John Ulrich, Irmgard
Schweska, Anne Marie von Bargen,
Manfred Schwarz, Irmgard Bauch, Wanda
Bartolicius,
Herbert
Balsmeier,
Don
Hackenschmidt, Hans Motsch and Audie
Bundschuh. We wish them God’s blessing
in the coming year.

The worksite is also limited access. You
may have seen the lift equipment and the
available space in the front of the church.
It’s physically difficult to have a larger crew
working or an additional crew with an
additional lift.
That said the crew has been increased to
three. There are still prepainted fascia,
eaves trough and downpipes to be installed
along the sides of the asphalt roof and a
crew will be sent to do that, as well as the
small roof over the south east entrance to
the Hall.
We hope that the roof will be completed
before Thanksgiving. Before we can go
back into the sanctuary we shall be hiring a
cleaning company to thoroughly clean the
church.

Croom on the occasion of
their engagement. They
plan to get married in May 20111.
Julie Drobny’s granddaughter got married
in September and we congratulate the
grandmother of the bride in particular.
Please remember a number of families in
our church as they mourn loved ones.
Igor Rummel passed away at Grace
Hospital in the presence of his family.
Hans-Jürgen Fraenkel passed away in
July. He, as well as Igor Rummel, were
long time members of this church. Mr.
Fraenkel moved to Barrie several years
ago.
Ralph Billinger died suddenly at the age
of 64. He serviced our church organ for
many years and had just dismantled the
organ for a major cleaning and renovation.
The pastor is on vacation
from September 21 to October 5.

Opening the
book of faith
a 7 week journey to engage in different ways to look at the Bible
What is your first language?
English, German, Polish, Ukrainian, Cantonese, Spanish, ... ?
Our first language as Christians is the language of scripture.
The Bible is the written word of God that creates and nurtures faith.
We are invited into a relationship with God;
our hearts are formed through scripture;
we are renewed through stories of people who lived their faith
and empowered by God’s promises.
Together we will open the book of faith,
learn about different ways to study the Bible,
get tools at hand to read the Bible,
share questions and seek for answers
and get more fluent in our first language.
Start date: Tuesday, October 12th at 6:30 p.m.
Please call and register in the office (416-977-4786 and leave a message) if you are
interested.
This bible study will only take place if there are at least 5 people registered.
Home Bible Study Groups
in Oakville and the Beaches are starting again after Thanksgiving.
We’ll have the same topic as the Bible Study at the church.

Eine Botschaft von Sabine Schweter
Aber es sind nicht nur die Finanzen, die diese
Kirche erhalten, es sind vor allem anderen die
Menschen, Ihr und ich. Aber haben in dieser
großen Kirche in Picton nicht auch viele
Menschen miteinander Gottesdienst gefeiert?
Trotzdem ist sie abgerissen worden.
Für mich sind diese Bilder der abgerissenen
Kirche eine Mahnung:
Es ist unsere Aufgabe, aufzupassen, dass
unsere Kirche nicht das gleiche Schicksal
erleidet. Wir müssen uns darüber bewusst
werden, dass es ein Segen ist, diese
wunderbare Kirche zu haben, aber auch eine
Verantwortung. Frau van der Smissen, die in
den Anfangsjahren unserer Kirchengemeinde
Reisen nach Europa gemacht hat, um Geld für
die Gemeinde zu sammeln ist für mich ein
Vorbild.
Jeder Einzelne in unserer Kirchengemeinde
sollte sich überlegen, wie wichtig ihm/ihr FELC
ist:
- Gott hat mir Begabungen gegebenàwas
gebe ich davon an Gottes Kirche zurück?
- Ich habe finanziell gut aus- und
vorgesorgtàist meine Kirche mit in meinem
Finanzplan?
- Ich habe Pläne für mein Lebenà in wieweit
kommt meine Kirche dabei vor?
- Bete ich regelmässig fuer meine Kirche?
Wir alle sind gefragt, damit unsere Erste
Evangelisch-Lutherische Kirche am Leben
bleibt oder sogar lebendiger wird! Jeder ist
verantwortlich und hat seine Aufgabe.
Liebe Gemeinde!
Ich möchte mit Ihnen ein Erlebnis teilen, das
mich aufgerüttelt hat: Im Urlaub sahen wir, wie
eine 135 Jahre alte Kirche in Picton (Prince
Eward County) abgerissen wurde. Mich haben
diese Bilder erschreckt und mir sind dazu viele
Gedanken durch den Kopf gegangen:
Warum ist diese Kirche abgerissen worden? Ist
das Lauf der Zeit?? Wird es unserer schönen
Ersten Ev. Lutherischen Kirche auch einmal so
ergehen??
Mir ist dabei klar geworden, dass es viel
Energie braucht, eine Kirche zu erhalten. Da ist
zum einen das Gebäude. Da wir gerade die
Renovierungsarbeiten am Dach haben, wissen
wir genau, wie viel Geld, Zeit und Kraft so
etwas kostet. Auch wenn uns die Kirche fehlt,
können wir doch dankbar sein, dass wir die
gute Möglichkeit haben, im neu renovierten
Saal unsere Gottesdienste zu feiern, ganz dicht
bei unserem Kirchenraum.

Neuigkeiten aus der
Gemeinde
September in der St. Andrew’s Latvian
Lutheran Church statt.
Ebenso trauern wir um Ralph Billinger,
der im Alter von 64 Jahren plötzlich
verstarb. Er hatte viele Jahre bis zuletzt
unsere Orgel gewartet.
Bitte denkt auch an und betet für Ute
Zander mit Kristina und Akira. Utes Vater
starb im August.

Relief- The Stove Project werden wir
Thanksgiving abschließen. Bis jetzt sind
$985.00 eingesammelt worden. Bitte
spenden Sie noch großzügig.

freuen uns alle mit
ihnen. Im Mai 2011 soll geheiratet werden.
Das Dach
So langsam nähert sich das Ende der
Erneuerung unseres Daches.
Das Hauptdach ist neu gedeckt und jetzt
sind neue Leute dabei, die die ganze
Kupferarbeit machen. Die Arbeit geht
langsam voran, weil es eben Feinarbeit ist.
Hinzu kommt, dass es vorne vor der Kirche
wenig Platz gibt zum Arbeiten.
Julie Drobnys Enkeltochter heiratete im
September und auch ihr gratulieren wir als
Großmutter der Braut.
Bitte denkt in Euren Gebeten an die
Familie von Igor Rummel, der im
September im Grace Hospital im Beisein
seiner Familie verstorben ist.
Ebenso trauern wir um Hans-Jürgen
Fraenkel, ein langjähriges Mitglied von
unsere Kirche. Vor einigen Jahren zog er
nach Barrie. Die Trauerfeier fand am 25.
Wir hoffen, dass die Arbeiten noch vor
Thanksgiving fertig werden. Ehe wir wieder
in die eigentliche Kirche können, muss dort
auch erst gründlich gereinigt werden.

Die Orgelarbeit lässt noch auf sich warten.
Ehe das Dach fertig ist, kann da nichts
gemacht werden.
