A Message from the Pastor
Where are you at home? Downtown
Toronto,
Brampton,
Mississauga,
Scarborough..? Home is more than an
address, more than four walls and a roof
over one‘s head.
My home is the place where I am welcome
just the way I am. It is the place I can be
myself without having to disguise myself.
Home is where I can be myself with
happiness and sadness. It is where I can
show
my
thankfulness
and
my
disappointment, my tears and my laughter.
I can come home whether I am successful
or even when I have failed. At home there
is always an open door for me.
written in Psalm 23. The writer had found a
home with God. The house of God became
his home. In this case though the house is
not just the building but also describes our
relationship to God: We are allowed to
come into his presence, just like we are,
without disguising ourselves. God wants to
have a relationship with us. He doesn’t
want a relationship with a faked better us.
He makes us feel welcome in every corner
of this world. Nobody is too good and
nobody is too bad. He invites us all to
come into his community and to feel at
home with him.
And while God is welcoming us just as we
come, let us welcome everyone as he
comes in our midst.

But if that is really the description of home
do we really have a real home? Can we
really be ourselves and openly and
honestly say how we feel inside?
Can we really openly show our mistakes
and our failures to each another? Do we
not even at home masquerade the truth?
Do we not sometimes feign success in the
business world, good health, a successful
marriage, a firm faith? If that is the case
and it becomes all consuming then we
cannot really feel comfortable at home and
we begin to be isolated even in the midst of
people.
“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow
me all the days of my life and I shall dwell
in the house of the Lord forever” is what is

2011 but we have since figured out that it
was actually 20 years this past August!).
Marilyn has been playing in both services
faithfully for all of those years. Most of this
time she also had a demanding job at
CBC. We thank her for all of those years of
faithful service to First Lutheran and wish
her well and hope to see her back in some
capacity much later in the year. We also
would like to thank Rita Wagner for playing
in January. Now we would like to introduce
you to Werner (Warner) Fehn, our new
organist. This month we welcome our new
organist Werner (or Warner) Fehn. Werner
was born in Toronto of German speaking
parents. He is a resident of Pickering. He
started music lessons at 7 and sang in a
church choir as a boy soprano. In high
school he was lead tenor in the choir. At
age 20 he went to the Royal Conservatory
of Music and became a music teacher. He
started studying the organ at 21. He has
been organist at several churches over the
years. He is familiar with the Anglican
liturgy as he was organist at St. George’s
Anglican Church in Oshawa. He is
presently lead tenor in the Ajax Community
Choir and plays the harpsichord in the
Toronto Continuo Collective. And how did
we find him? He is an assistant to Thomas
Linken who did the major overhaul of our
organ after the roof renovations. He met
Thom while both were working at Gober
Organ Building. Thom Linken was a good
acquaintance of
Friedrich Brunzema’s
father Gerhard Brunzema who was an
organ builder operating out of Fergus,
Ontario after many years of organ building
in Germany and Quebec.
Happy Birthday to everyone with a birthday
in February. Our best wishes go
particularly to Philipp Art, Annemarie Roth,
Helga Barbier, Lydia Falkenberg, Ewald
Hammermeister and Esther Walther (90!)

From Church Council
Please mark March 27 on your calendar.
This will be the date of our annual meeting.
We shall also be discussing the budget at
that time as the meeting in January had to
be cancelled on very short notice. Council
apologizes for the cancellation. The reason
was that the budget numbers could not be
presented to the congregation ahead of
time.

Thank you to all who made the effort to
come out to have their picture taken for our
new photo directory. It was sometimes a
challenge getting here for many of you and
we appreciate that fact that you did come!
News from the Organ Loft
As many of you know a major overhaul of
the organ was necessary and this was
done after the roof renovations were
completed. This was done by Thom Linken
who has worked on several large organs in
Toronto.
Please introduce yourselves to Werner and
let’s make him feel
welcome here!
Our organist Marilyn Kneller has taken a
leave of absence to deal with some health
issues. Marilyn has been with us for over
20 years. (She thought it was 20 years in
Lord, leak and gloomy

Eine Botschaft vom Pastor
in unserem Zuhause wirklich wir selber
sein und offen und ehrlich zeigen wie es in
uns aussieht? Können wir tatsächlich
unsere
Fehler und
Macken
offen
voreinander zeigen? Oder spielen wir
einander nicht auch in unserem Zuhause
etwas vor: Beruflichen Erfolg, gute
Gesundheit, gelingende Ehe, festen
Glauben? Wenn das so ist und
überhandnimmt, dann sind wir auch
Zuhause nicht mehr zuhause und
vereinsamen inmitten von Menschen.
„Gutes und Barmherzigkeit werden mir
folgen mein Leben lang und ich werde
bleiben im Hause des Herrn immerdar“,
schrieb der Dichter des 23. Psalms. Er
hatte ein Zuhause bei Gott gefunden. Das
Haus Gottes wurde ihm zur Heimat, zum
Zuhause. Dabei ist mit Haus nicht zuerst
ein Gebäude gemeint, sondern es
beschreibt unsere Beziehung zu Gott: Wir
dürfen in seine Gegenwart kommen – so
wie wir sind, ohne uns zu verstellen. Gott
will eine Beziehung zu uns haben und nicht
zu einem vorgetäuschten besseren Ich von
uns. Bei ihm sind wir willkommen, an
jedem Ort dieser Erde. Niemand ist zu gut,
niemand ist zu schlecht. Er lädt uns alle
ein, in seine Gemeinschaft zu kommen und
bei ihm zuhause zu sein.
Wo sind Sie zuhause? Downtown Toronto,
Brampton, Mississauga, Scarborough ….?
Zuhause ist mehr als eine Adresse, mehr
als vier Wände und ein Dach über dem
Kopf.
Zuhause ist der Ort, an dem ich so
willkommen bin, wie ich bin. Es ist der Ort,
an dem ich ich selber sein darf, ohne mich
verstellen zu müssen. Zuhause darf ich
mich selber zeigen, mit meiner Freude und
Traurigkeit, meiner Dankbarkeit und meiner
Enttäuschung, meinen Tränen und meinem
Lachen. Nachhause darf ich kommen, ob
ich erfolgreich war oder versagt habe.
Zuhause ist immer eine Tür für mich offen.
Doch wenn das die Beschreibung für ein
wirkliches Zuhause ist, wer von uns hat
dann ein wirkliches Zuhause? Können wir

Neuigkeiten aus der Gemeinde
CBC. Wir bedanken uns bei ihr für ihre langen
Jahre hier bei der Ersten Lutherischen Kirche,
wünschen ihr alles Gute und hoffen, sie bald
wiederzusehen.
Herzliche Glückwünsche an alle unsere
Geburtstagskinder im Februar. Insbesondere
gratulieren wir Philipp Art, Annemarie Roth,
Helga Barbier, Lydia Falkenberg, Ewald
Hammermeister und Esther Walther (90!) Wir
wünschen allen alles Gute fürs kommende
Jahr.
Im Januar hat Rita Wagner in den
Gottesdiensten gespielt und wir bedanken uns
auch bei ihr für den Einsatz.
Werner (Warner) Fehn wird jetzt in der
Zwischenzeit unser Organist sein. Werner ist in
Toronto geboren und hat deutschsprechende
Eltern. Er wohnt jetzt in Pickering. Im Alter von
7 fing er mit Musikstunden an und sang im
Kirchenchor als Kindersopran mit. In der High
School war er leitender Tenor im Chor und mit
20 ging er an das Royal Conservatory of Music
und wurde Musiklehrer. Mit 21 fing er mit der
Orgel an. Er ist seit vielen Jahren Organist an
verschiedenen Kirchen und kennt sich mit der
Anglikanischen Liturgie gut aus, da er bei St.
George’s Anglican Church in Oshawa auch
Organist war. Zur Zzeit spielt er Cembalo im
Toronto Continuo Collective und ist leitender
Tenor im Ajax Community Choir.
Und wie sind wir an Werner gekommen? Er ist
Assistent von Thom Linken. Zusammen mit
Thom Linken hat er bei Gober Organ Building
gearbeitet. Thom Linken war ein Kollege von
Gerhard Brunzema (Vater von Friedrich), der in
Deutschland, Quebec und später dann in
Fergus, ON Orgelbauer war. Die Welt ist klein!
Bitte heißen Sie Werner herzlich willkommen!
Vom Kirchenvorstand
Bitte merken Sie sich den 27. März als Annual
Meeting Tag vor. An diesem Tag werden wir
auch das Budget besprechen, was wir sehr
kurzfristig am vergangenen Sonntag absagen
mussten. Der Kirchenvorstand bittet um
Verzeihung. Grund dafür war, dass wir der
Gemeinde nicht rechtzeitig im Voraus die
abgedruckten Zahlen vorlegen konnten.

Wir bedanken uns bei allen, die sich die Mühe
machten, zu einem Fototermin in die Kirche zu
kommen. Es war wetterbedingt nicht ganz
einfach!
Orgel Nachrichten
Wie viele von Ihnen wissen, mussten wir die
Orgel nach langen Jahren und auch nach der
Erneuerung des Daches neu überarbeiten.
Thomas Linken, der schon an einigen großen
Orgeln hier in der Stadt gearbeitet hat, war
einige Wochen hier bei uns damit beschäftigt.
Kanzeltausch
Am 20. Februar findet wieder ein Kanzeltausch
(nein, keine Sorge, die Kanzel bleibt hier, nur
der Pfarrer wechselt) statt. Pfarrerin Katharina
Moeller wird die Gottesdienste in unserer
Kirche leiten, während Pastor Schweter in der
Epiphaniaskirche predigen wird.
Unsere Organistin, Marilyn Kneller, hat sich
für die nächsten Monate freistellen lassen, da
sie sich um ihre Gesundheit kümmern muss.
Marilyn ist seit über 20 Jahren bei uns (sie
dachte, es seien im August 20 Jahre gewesen,
aber sie war schon im August 2010 20 Jahre
hier!). Marilyn spielt seit Jahren in beiden
Gottesdiensten. Hauptberuflich war sie bei der
