God’s Word for the Month of May
“He who believes and is baptized will be saved.” Mark 16:16
Two pastors meet. One of them complains that he has a problem with bats in his church
and says: “I caught them, put them in a bag, drove 100 km away with them, before I let
them go. But before I was even home again they were all back again.”
The second pastor then said: “I’ve bought a gun so that I can shoot them, but I haven’t
hit one yet.”
The third pastor just smiled sympathetically to the other two. “I don’t have any problems
with bats.” “What did you do to get rid of the bats? I just baptized and confirmed them
and they never came back”.
Unfortunately there is quite a grain of truth in this story because often we do not see the
confirmands for many years after their confirmation. There are many different reasons
for this: sports, other interests, friends. Church and faith seem not to be so important in
this phase of life. That is despite the fact that the students have in good faith taken their
confirmation vows as Christians who believe in Jesus Christ and in the fellowship of the
church.
Confirmation means to solidify, to provide support for something. The confirmands
reaffirm their part of the covenant that God formed with them at their baptism. In their
confirmation they affirm everything that God has done for them. It is as if God has
extended his hand to the children in baptism and said: “I want to be there for you a want
you to extend your hand to me.” That is exactly what the confirmands in a figurative
sense do. They give God a high five and say: “Jesus, I want to believe in you and to live
in you.
In confirmation both belief and baptism come together again. Only together can they be
effective as Martin Luther wrote in his grand catechism: “Without belief there is no
meaning to water, even if in itself water is an over dimensional treasure.”
But confirmation is not a once in a lifetime event which is finished after the formal
confirmation in church. We need this all throughout our lives. We need to remember all
our lives the covenant God made with us at our baptism. We need to continually say
yes to God. We need to re-affirm our faith constantly
The good part is that God’s yes to us never ends and that his hand is forever
outstretched to us. So, many who become confirmed in their youth may in later life
reconnect with the covenant made with God and affirm their yes with God.

Treffen sich drei Pfarrer. Der eine von ihnen beklagt sich, dass er Probleme mit
Fledermäusen in seiner Kirche hat und meint „Ich habe sie eingefangen, in einen Sack
gesteckt und bin mit ihnen 100 Kilometer weit weg gefahren, bevor ich sie wieder
freigelassen habe. Aber… noch bevor ich wieder zu Hause angekommen bin, waren sie
schon wieder alle da.“ Da meint der nächste Pfarrer: „Ich habe mir ein Gewehr gekauft
um sie abzuschießen, aber ich habe keine einzige erwischt.“ Der dritte Pfarrer lächelt
nur mitleidig mit den anderen: „Ich habe keine Probleme mit Fledermäusen.“ „Was hast
du gemacht, wie bist du sie losgeworden?“ „Ich habe sie einfach getauft und konfirmiert,
da waren sie alle weg!“
Leider steckt oft ein ganzes Stück Wahrheit in dieser Geschichte, denn oft sehen wir die
Konfirmierten nach ihrer Konfirmation für viele Jahre nicht wieder. Das hat sicher ganz
verschiedene Gründe: Sport, andere Interessen, Freunde, …. Kirche und Glauben
scheinen in dieser Lebensphase für viele nicht so wichtig zu sein, auch wenn sie ihr
Konfirmationsversprechen, als Christen im Glauben an Jesus Christus und in der
Gemeinschaft der Kirche zu leben, mit Ernst abgeben.
Konfirmation heißt, befestigen, bestätigen. Die Konfirmanden befestigen von ihrer Seite
den Bund, den Gott mit ihnen in der Taufe geschlossen hat. In der Konfirmation bejahen
sie vertrauensvoll, das was Christus für sie getan hat. Es ist so, als ob Gott in der Taufe
den Kindern die Hand entgegenstreckt und sagt: Ich will für dich da sein und wünsche
mir, dass du in meine Hand einschlägst. Und genau das ist es, was die Konfirmanden
sinnbildlich tun. Sie schlagen in Gottes Hand ein und sagen: Jesus, ich will dir vertrauen
und mit dir leben.
In der Konfirmation kommen Glaube und Taufe wieder zusammen. Nur zusammen
wirken sie unser Heil, wie Martin Luther im Großen Katechismus schreibt: „Ohne
Glauben ist das Wasser nichts nütze, auch wenn es an sich selbst ein übergroßer
göttlicher Schatz ist.“
Doch die Konfirmation ist keine einmalige Sache, die mit der Einsegnung in der Kirche
abgeschlossen wäre. Unser ganzes Leben lang haben wir es nötig, in den Bund, den
Gott in der Taufe mit uns geschlossen hat, zurück zu kehren. Immer wieder müssen wir
ein Ja zu Gott finden, immer wieder neu unseren Glauben bestätigen.
Das Gute ist, dass Gottes Ja zu uns niemals aufhört und seine einladende Hand immer
ausgestreckt bleibt. So mag mancher, der als Jugendlicher konfirmiert wurde, später im
Leben wieder an sein Ja zu Gott anknüpfen.

Be Involved in the Building Plans of your Church

Frauengruppe). Bitte rufen Sie Harald Kroos an 1-905-478-8666 oder hinterlassen Sie

At the annual meeting this year it was decided to strike a building committee with an
additional 4 members. Harald Kroos is now looking for people to join him in the future
building planning for our church. Each interest group within the church (Seniors, Ladies
Group etc.) should have a representation.

Volunteers Wanted for Doors Open
On May 27 and 28, First Lutheran will open its doors to the public for the fourth time as
we participate in the Toronto Doors Open programme. This is an occasion on which
numerous buildings in Toronto of architectural or historical interest welcome members
of the public to visit.
Doors Open is a wonderful opportunity for us to reach out at no cost to the broader
Toronto community as well as to showcase our beautiful heritage church. Last year
about 500 people of all ages visited us over the two days. Some visitors had never
before been in a Christian church.
We will be open on Saturday, May 27 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and on Sunday, May
28 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Volunteers are required on those two days, or for parts of the
two days, to greet visitors and answer their questions.
If you are interested in being a part of this programme, please contact Edward Schlauch
at 416-463-8253. For the volunteers of past years, it was a joy to see our church afresh
through the eyes of our many visitors.
Picnic in June
Sunday, June 18, will be our annual picnic at Simon Gregorcic Park, Slowenian Park .
The Slovenian Club is at 1600 Highway 9 at the corner of Dufferin St and Highway 9.

Introducing our New Church Council Members
Dear Members of First Lutheran,
I was born in Toronto and raised in Caledon East. We moved to Mississauga in 1978
and have since called that our home, my second home being in Northern Germany. I
completed a Specialist in German Literature from the University of Toronto in 1989 and
most recently a Certificate in Retail & Business Services at Ryerson University.
Currently, I am working on my Certificate in Training & Development while working fulltime in Marketing Communications at the LCBO. My challenge will be to work with my
fellow council members and you the congregation to represent the integrity of our
church and help to secure a future that we can all be proud of.

Liebe Gemeinde,
Ich bin in Toronto geboren und in Caledon East aufgewachsen. 1978 sind wir nach
Mississauga gezogen, wo ich bis heute noch Zuhause bin. Meine zweite Heimat ist in
Norddeutschland, Raum Hamburg. 1989 habe ich mein B.A. in Germanistik erhalten an
der Universität Toronto. Letztes Jahr habe ich ein Zertifikat in “Retail & Business
Services” erworben von der Ryerson Universität und arbeite zurzeit an meinem
Zertifikat in “Training & Development”. Mein Beruf ist im Marketing Bereich beim LCBO.
Ich werde mein Bestes tun, die Integrität unserer Kirche und unserer Gemeinde zu
erhalten und werde mich für eine feste Zukunft für unsere Kirche einsetzen.

By way of introduction, I was born in the Limestone City - Kingston, Ontario - in 1962,
and grew up in the Thousand Islands region and Ottawa. My mother is from the Black
Forest near Freiburg, while my father's home was near Breslau in Upper Silesia. To this
day they are both members of the Martin Luther Kirche in Ottawa. I am an actuary with
a background in statistics and economics. I have worked for large insurance
companies, and have previously served on the boards of directors of several volunteer
organizations. My musical favourites are the three-Bs: Bach, Benny (Goodman) and
Brubeck! Frank Grossman

(Kilmer was an American journalist and poet who served as literary editor for The
Churchman and in 1913 was on the staff of the New York Times. He died in action in
France. This poem was given a musical setting that was popular in the 1940’s and
