Dear Families,
Welcome to the January issue of our newsletter. If you are
receiving our newsletter for the first time, we sadly welcome
you to our centre.
The past couple of months have been very busy here at the
centre, especially with the recent staff changes, as we are
learning to work together as a new team. We have had a
huge cleanup and re-arrange of the offices, so if you haven’t
dropped in recently we would love you to come and see the
changes.
We recently welcomed Helen Rawsthorne as our new
Regional Manager, and she is already doing a fantastic job
representing our organisation in the community providing
education and awareness.

Hi, my name is Helen Rawsthorne. I recently joined SIDS and Kids Hunter Region. I am the working mum of
two rapidly growing daughters and the new Regional Manager.
I am a local girl, born and bred in the Hunter Region. Following high school I attended the University of
Newcastle and graduated with a Diploma in Applied Science (Nursing). I continued my nursing education
with the NSW College of Nursing Certificate in Oncological Nursing and, in 2006, a course in Haematology &
Haemopoietic Cell Transplantation. I am also trying to complete a Certificate 4 in Frontline Management,
between working full time and driving my two kids to dancing, drama and other activities.
I have worked as a Registered Nurse, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse Educator and Clinical Trial
Coordinator at Lingard Private Hospital.
I left clinical nursing in 2003 and joined the Leukaemia Foundation. I was a Support Services Co-ordinator
with responsibility for education, both of health professionals and the community, co-ordinating local support
groups for people with blood and bone marrow cancers and their carers, co-ordinating the first national
telephone forum for people with chronic myeloid leukaemia. I was also responsible for the provision of
financial, practical and emotional support to patients and their families.
I intend to be a passionate advocate on behalf of families in the Hunter who have been affected by the death
of a child. I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible and providing the support services that the
people of the Hunter need and deserve.

2012 Support Groups
Next Year our Groups will be changing format to better suit our
families needs. We currently have a number of different groups,
however next year our monthly groups will have a certain topic
eg; Making Memories, Coping with Birthdays and
Anniversaries, Dealing with family and friends, Coping with Christmas
etc.
We have had similar groups to this in the past, and have found them
to be very effective, with greater numbers attending.
In January we will be sending out the new 2012 Group Brochures, so
please phone or email us if you are interested in receiving one.

regarding the changes.

Peer Support Training
During September and October this year, we held our latest peer support training, over 3 days.
It was a beautiful group of bereaved mums and a great success. New friendships were formed
and now the peer supporters are being matched to support newer bereaved parents.
Huge thank you to Karen Barrett who facilitated the training, with the support of Moira, Leone
and Kate.

2011 Memorial Services
Muswellbrook Support Group met on Wednesday 9th November for their Memorial Ceremony.
We had nine present and after a delayed start, due to the
area not being ready, we honoured our “Little Ones” with a
theme that represented the stone that falls into the river
and the ripple effect it has on the surrounding water surface.
Just as our loss has had an impact on all
the souls around us
The little boats held messages to our “Little Ones” and were
placed on the blue, which represented to continuous flow of
the river of life.
We followed the Ceremony with a lovely lunch and time to
chat. Our next meeting will be our last for the year and also
our Christmas get together.
The annual Memorial Service for the Newcastle region
was held at Northville Lodge, Edgeworth, on the 27th of
November. The theme was butterflies, and we had a
wonderful attendance of families.
Many thanks to the Northville Lodge and New Heights
Christian Church for donating the venue and refreshments, it is very much appreciated.
Thank you to the brave bereaved mums who read poems during the service, and thanks to the beautiful live
music performances from Shae Matzon and John Noble.

Angels with beautiful wings of silk and
crowns of baby rosebuds all live together
in a castle and when the angels want to
go someplace, they just whistle and a
cloud floats to the castle door and picks
them up. And the angels ride through the
sky riding the cloud like a magic carpet –
