MICHAEL BEARD, PASTORAL ASSOCIATE
Dear Saint Anne Catholic Community:
Hello! My name is Michael Beard, and I’m thrilled to be joining the staff at Saint
Anne as the new Pastoral Associate. In very broad strokes, I’m from the Pacific
Northwest (born in Seattle, raised in Portland), did my undergrad at Catholic
University of America in D.C., lived in Peru for a year in a half post-grad, discerned a call to do ministry for the Church and got my Master of Divinity from
the University of Notre Dame.
That’s a lot to just gloss over. I’m the older of two boys, born and raised by loving and amazing parents
whom I’m blessed to have had present throughout my 28 years of life. I grew up loving Science and Math,
but somewhere in my high school years, I discovered just how much I loved music, Philosophy, service,
religion and forging good friendships … there was a lot of indecision when it came time to pick a college
and major. I was never quite able to cut my interests down: while I majored in Psychology at Catholic
University, I also minored in Philosophy, Theology and Math.
After I graduated, I worked in Lima, Peru, for about 18 months. God was calling me to encounter Him in
a powerful new way, and I had no idea what I was getting myself into. The Capuchin Franciscans work in
a poorer area of Lima. I found myself there, working mostly with 14-16 year old boys for a year and a half.
It was an amazing experience and game-changing time of my life. I’ll be happy to talk your ear off about
just about anything from that time should you want to ask me!
In a nutshell, though, that experience prompted my desire to work in a ministry setting, working for and
with folks to recognize the ways God is present, active and calling in their lives. This prompted me to go
to Notre Dame for graduate school where I got the most fancy-sounding of degrees: Master of Divinity.
It’s a degree that many folks get on the road to being ordained because it gives solid intellectual formation
but has effective communication of, collaboration with and reception of God’s love with others as its primary goals.
I’m coming to you after a year of working back at CUA, my alma mater. I was blessed to work there with
some great folks in the office of campus ministry as the Campus Minister in charge of retreats and men’s
ministries. I definitely found it rewarding, as it resonated with my reasons for wanting to dedicate my career to ministry.
That said, a tremendous blessing prompted my relocation: I am engaged to marry my lovely fiancée, Elizabeth, at the end of October. She is a Chicago native, and lots of prayers and discussions resulted in the decision to begin our life together here in the Chicago area. She works as the Pastoral Associate of St. Benedict Parish in Chicago and has been a life-saver as far as getting familiar with my surroundings! Please
keep us in your prayers as we prepare to get married!
With all of that, I want to say again: I’m thrilled to be joining the staff here, but even more so, I’m excited
to meet you and enter into this amazing community. I have the extraordinary blessing of serving as staff
animator of the RCIA program, the Baptism Preparation Ministry (with Deacon Bill Karstenson and his
wife Sueanne), the Young Marrieds Outreach and STAGG in my role as Pastoral Associate. Continuing
Sisters Anna Marie and Lauretta’s extraordinary ministries in these venues is humbling to say the least!
I’m here to be present to you and your needs, so please feel free to give me a call , shoot me an email or
look for me after Mass! I look forward to meeting you!

FIRST SATURDAY DEVOTION
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus”.
Mary’s total commitment to doing God’s will enabled her to be the
most worthy vessel to bear the Son of God. Her immaculate body
and sinless soul were graced by God and given the privilege to be
assumed into Heaven.
In August, the Church joyfully calls us to celebrate the Mother of
God’s Assumption into Heaven where she reigns as our Queen
and as our Mother.
Please come to pay homage to Our Lady by praying the Rosary
which follows the celebration of Mass on Saturday, August 1st.

Dr. Anna-Katharina Wittenstein, the Chairwoman of the company and granddaughter of the founder!
She is an engineer as well! The students also had a chance to fly an F-35 simulator!

MAC
The Men of Action and Contemplation (MAC) Group is looking
for new members. The group meets on the 3rd Saturday of

to build friendships and develop a deeper understanding and
appreciation of our faith. For more information, contact Jeff at

TUESDAY EVENING ROSARY
Did you know a group of parishioners meet to pray
the Rosary every Tuesday at 7:00 p.m., in the Chapel?
Archbishop Fulton Sheen said:
The power of the Rosary is beyond description.ʺ
There is no commitment; come weekly, monthly or
when the Spirit moves you. We are a small group
who believe in the power of the Rosary.

Sacraments
We believe that the celebration of the sacraments
ranks among the most important gifts that we have.
We look forward to sharing these celebrations with
those who, in some way, are part of our community.
Therefore, please note the following:
Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are
in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a
visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary
Hoffing at 847.382.2148.
Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help
your family prepare for the special event of your
child’s entrance into our faith community.
•
Two Baptism sessions are required for parents
baptizing their 1st child
•
Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic
Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at
Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member
before scheduling Baptism
•
Parents who have already attended Baptism
preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to
a staff member before scheduling Baptism
