On the Sunday afternoon of Nov. 6, partygoers came by the dozens for fun and friendship. The party ran from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at our Fred Chapa Campus, 20830 Sherman Way, Winnetka. We had activities galore for families and individuals of all ages. Dignitaries including Councilman Dennis Zine, Congressman Brad Sherman and City Attorney Carmen Trutanich joined in the fun. Music included a special performance by Arrest My Sister. Our MC, Juno, entertained and kept everything running smoothly. We sipped root beer floats and enjoyed other tasty treats. We played games and enjoyed activities for the kids. Friends and clients painted ceramics and made beads. Attendees admired the garden planted and tended by clients. Friendly hellos, animated conversation and joyous laughter filled the air. Of course, we had a big birthday cake and plenty of cupcakes. A popular guest of honor was the large red, blue and green macaw, who had a special rapport with our clients. The neon-bright member of the parrot family fascinated the partygoers, young and old. Valley Village This was a moment for celebration, especially for our founders and long-time supporters. In a day of reflection, they could (continued on page 13) Congressman Brad Sherman, Ron Smith, and Councilman Dennis Zine 2 Board Of Directors President’s Message you so much! grew in our own confidence and understanding of this Sincerely, most rewarding experience. Garden Party & Annual Luncheon on June 25, 2011, was a stunning success, raising $119,500 to help our clients. Entertainer Bob Saget returned as master of ceremonies. The actor and comedian has served in this role for more than 10 years. Popular comedian Tom Dreesen, who has appeared more than 500 times as a stand-up comedian on national television, regaled the audience with his witty humor. Councilman Dennis Zine, quite a wit himself, once again served as auctioneer, aided by Congressman Brad Sherman. The Universal Sheraton Hotel provided an elegant setting as guests enjoyed the Garden Party in the late morning, sipping champagne and savoring hors d’oeuvres to the music of the West 79th Street Funk Jazz Tom Dreesen Band. The many outdoor boutiques featured unique items to purchase. Then the guests moved indoors to enjoy the lavish luncheon, starting with the Sheraton’s famous tomato bisque. Families and friends of Valley Village dined in the elegant ballroom and laughed heartily to Dreesen’s comedy. Then the fun continued with auctioneer Zine and emcee Saget, soon joined onstage by Congressman Brad Sherman. Sure, we had an auction catalog, but that wasn’t enough for our intrepid team, who kept upping the prizes and brought out the competitive streak in our bidders. Special opportunity drawings for trips and baskets added to the fun and the fundraising. Another auction item was a special Aloha Luau for our clients, who love to celebrate but often can’t navigate the popular amusement destinations. A luau in an accessible locale is perfect, something every client can attend, no matter what his or her mobility level, notes our executive director, Debra Donovan. Our generous Showtime! audience made that possible this year. A small army of volunteers kept the event on track, from the smiling greeters at the registration table to the runners taking the bids to be processed. With so many details to keep organized, the event ran smoothly. This being our 40th anniversary, the Showtime! program this year featured a special section, “40 Years of Smiles,” on our history, with narrative and photos from our early years through the present. Our special thanks go to Bob Saget, Tom Dreesen, Councilman Dennis Zine and Congressman Brad Sherman. We are also extremely grateful to our sponsors: • Diamond sponsor Bank of the West • Gold sponsors Hamer Toyota, Kaiser Permanente, and Marion Letsch • Silver sponsors Barbara and Dwight Wheeler, Cheri and John Toffan, and Allison Tartaglione • Bronze sponsors Dorothy and LeRoy Bushong; Kitty and Don Cooper; R. It puts a smile on my face.” - Bearance Hudson “I am happy to come to work every day because everybody is bright and very excited to see us.” - Christina Rivas New Volunteer Nursing Program At Valley Village - Sunland In 2011, Valley Village had the distinct privilege of developing a partnership with vocational nursing students from the Career Care Institute, a vocational medical training facility for students. The students begin working with clients only after extensive training and orientation at Valley Village. An onsite instructor, provided by the school, facilitates the daily learning process and helps cultivate the students’ learning. This is a unique opportunity as most students entering such a program would normally work in a hospital setting or other common medical facilities where they would normally not gain experience with developmentally disabled people. Currently the nursing student volunteers have contributed over 4,500 volunteer hours since starting in March and have gained a newfound interest in the wonderful and much needed work we do here at Valley Village in the Adult Day Health Care. The program is currently at our Sunland ADHC and we hope that it will be replicated in Winnetka. We appreciate the great work and their dedication in learning how to work effectively with our clients who have developmental disabilities. Additionally, we hope that the experience gained here will be a valuable lesson and inspire the students to continue to work in this field. Seasoned With Art And Love For those of us who love cooking and cookbooks, our new fundraiser book gives us a taste tour of the world. The recipes from staff and families are organized into seven sections, from Appetizers to Main Dishes to Desserts. Full-color photos of clients and their artwork, especially ceramics, show happy people involved in creative activities. Kudos to Susan Karhroody, our ceramics instructor, for spearheading this amazing effort. “Seasoned with Love and Art” has 74 pages of recipes, photos and cooking tips in a handy 5½x8½inch format with a bright orange illustrated cover and bright orange spiral binding to match. To get your copy, contact Valley Village, 20830 Sherman Way, Winnetka, CA 91306, phone (818) 587-9450 or e-mail info@ valleyvillage.org. The usual donation is $12.00. 9 Community-At-Large Day Getting Out For People With Developmental Challenges On Sunday, October 2, Valley Village, along with partner organizations New Horizons and TLC, joined together for a Community-at-Large Day, hosted by The California Science Center. Approximately 350 guests with a wide range of developmental disabilities were given an opportunity to tour the California Science Center and enjoy a picnic lunch together. There was even a special “geocache hunt” with participants following a “treasure map” to locate a box filled with cards. The California Science Center was the perfect host, providing lots of fun-filled, hands-on opportunities for the participants. According to Jim Murray, care provider at Gladstone House: “Donny was very interested in understanding how electricity got from a dam to the light bulb in your house. Honestly, I think it was fun for everyone to get together on a large basis with the different organizations. They really enjoyed it.” “The clients had a great time,” said Alex Krasnoshstein, Activities Director for Valley Village. “I saw a lot of smiling faces and a lot of them were very excited to be there.” This was the first of what we hope will be many Community-at-Large Days. Valley Village is planning additional days approximately every three to four months at various locations around the Los Angeles area. All developmentally disabled people and their families are welcome to join us. For more information, contact Caitlind at (818) 587-9450 or e-mail [email protected]. the needs of the clients. We will be placing volunteers with small groups to enrich the experience and be a friend to the clients to answer questions and help explain what they are seeing. No special skills are needed, and families are welcome. Please contact Jo Ellen Krumm at 818-587-9450 or e-mail her at [email protected] to volunteer or for more information. For many who have volunteered in various ways through the years, the 40th anniversary represented a milestone. These volunteers and advocates sought quality lifetime care for their developmentally disabled adult family members. Valley Village provides that. We have grown into the premier provider of residential and adult day health care programs. Many of our clients are medically fragile as well as developmentally disabled, and we are the only organization in the state that provides a high level of health services for these medically fragile clients as well as programs for developmental disabilities. A Special Luau For Our Own Kanes And Wahines Flowered leis, bright island prints, palm trees and hula dancers created an unforgettable Hawaiian-themed luau for Valley Village’s day and residential clients on Saturday, Oct. 29. Clients gathered at the Odyssey Restaurant in Granada Hills for their own private party. Thanks to our generous contributors who attended and gave toward this special party at our Annual Showtime! luncheon, we were able to plan this special day just for Valley Village clients to enjoy. The food was so ono (delicious), and we had drinks, live luau dancers and a DJ who played our clients’ favorite hits the entire afternoon. While Valley Village strives to provide as many special opportunities as possible for our clients, funding is always a challenge. This is where the generosity of our contributors comes to the rescue. We all know how important social interaction is for our own development, and it is the same for the development of our wonderful clients. So, as they say in Hawaii, mahalo to everyone who makes special social days possible for all of our clients to participate! We thank everyone who came and everyone who has supported us through the years. Special thanks to the Councilmembers Dennis Zine and Mitch Englander for sponsoring the event, as well as Westfield Topanga, 21 Choices, Anheuser-Busch, Inc., and Starbucks Canoga Park. Your efforts make a difference for our deserving clients. Let’s keep partying! By Judi Prejean Happy New Year! It’s hard to believe it is 2012. It is harder to believe that the Valley Village Foundation will be 10 years old this year! Time sure flies. In 2001, the Valley Village Board of Directors authorized the establishment of a foundation. The Valley Village Foundation was formed in 2002 to act as a supporting foundation for Valley Village. The mission statement reads “To provide for the future financial viability of Valley Village.” That’s a pretty hefty goal. Valley Village has historically been, and is still, primarily funded through federal and state programs aimed as serving the adult developmentally disabled population. As the world experiences a global recession, the need for this type of support becomes all too clear as the organization is faced with funding reductions and uncertainty as to what the next budget, and the budget after that, and after that, will bring. For the past 10 years, this group of foundation founders has done an amazing job of providing education and support to the Valley Village parents and supporters encouraging appropriate estate planning and planned giving, which entails naming The Valley Village Foundation as beneficiary in an estate. While not a fast method of fundraising, it is an effective way to enable families to ensure that their children are well cared for throughout their lifetimes, but that remaining funds will revert to Valley Village Foundation to provide the financial viability of the organization and operation in perpetuity. I’d like to recognize this group of founders for their hard work and continued dedication to the organization. Guenther Engel served as the Valley Village Foundation President since inception. Now a member at large, he has been tireless in his efforts to establish the foundation properly and to guide the progress of the group. S. Dwight Wheeler has served as the Valley Village Foundation Vice President since 2004. Dolores Zimmermann served as the Valley Village Foundation Vice President from 2003 – 2004, member at large, and is now our Secretary. June Stanton, the Valley Village Foundation Secretary since inception in 2002, is now a member at large. June has been absolutely It is because of the efforts of this group that the Foundation continues today. The 2011-2012 Foundation Executive Board follows: Judi Prejean President Dwight Wheeler Vice President Dolores Zimmermann Secretary Robert Hay Treasurer There’s been a bit of change in the leadership roles, although all of the founding board members are remaining active on the board. The work is not done! We continue to face uncertainties that create the need for a supporting foundation. While budgetary uncertainties abound, these are not our only concerns. Theoretically, the economy will improve and budget uncertainties will subside. With a growing population of adults with autism and an aging population of our own clients, we face needs for expanded services – both in terms of numbers of clients served, but also in creating services to provide the lifelong care that Valley Village clients need and deserve. Thank you to all who have supported Valley Village and the Valley Village Foundation through the annual appeal, special appeals or as members of our Legacy Group through including Valley Village Foundation in your estate plan. I wish you all a happy, healthy and successful 2012.
